      Almost happened to me. I put a carquest thermostat in my 328i. It locked up not even after a month of driving. Shot my hose out. I never got more than 250 degrees but it's a problem non the less is a problem. The hose shot the coolant all over my alternator and it burnt out. $300 on top of it. Nothing I could do, but now I know to stick with oe/bosch parts.

    Great video! I have a 95 US Spec M3 and have done the complete chassis reinforcement. As for the cooling system, I've done just the aluminum radiator. Depending on the year of the car, it will also require reinforcements on the rear strut towers and front subframe. It is very important to reinforce the subframe where the engine mounts are fastened.

      3400 for coolant system and ccv ? No no no that was less than a grand. I did swap out all the suspension components , some performance coilovers , control arms, tire rods, wheel bearings, cv axles , sway bars, bushings , and I even replaced the engine mounts . And yes I did do it all by myself, never will I ever take it to a local mechanic , especially where I live .

YES, I've had to fix this, and fix that, but repairing/replacing worn parts, and it's expected maintence, IS EXPECTED!!! I can vouch for the cooling system stuff, when i bought my vert I didn’t take care of this because the previous owner said he already had, and i made the mistake of believing him because the car had the front hoses and radiator visibly replaced. The hoses started cracking one by one and finally the plastic fittings all blew, so the entire thing cost me close to the price of the car by the end everything was repaired ( i also had to replace gaskets, engine parts etc which had been affected)

      But last few owner said he replaced hoses & cooling system refresh and all . Started getting a little idle surge , nothing major so I go yo the engine bay and try to diagnose . Looking around I see those 2 close together nipples like right front Infront of the manifold didn’t have clamps & barely on since all I did was just tug on it . Got some clamps and about to see

    I had a 96 328i with 308K miles when I sold it on Craigslist. The drivetrain was still strong but the body was totally rusted out. For the last 3-4 years I had to have rust repaired to get it to pass inspection. Finally the last year it needed catalytic converters too and that was when I gave it up. But if you live in the northeast US and drive it daily, there is virtually no way to stop the rust. It's relentless!!!
    Man, I still miss that car. Got an E46 now :).

  • @friguy4444
    @friguy4444 5 лет назад +4

    Great job on this video! Thanks! There are a few differences between the e36 and the maintenance of the e46. Main part that can be a bummer is the Vanos system. There is a lot of info on youtube on this as well the oil pump inside the oil pan area needs to be locked down. lots of info on this too. the maintenance on the E46 M3 is quite different as well. except the subframe stuff is still a problem but a bigger job to get done right. The cooling system isn't nearly as bad either (but still needs to be watched and the electric switch is an excellent idea). Vanos though is a thing to deal with before its a problem. Then you're almost bullet proof!

  • @nickamarit
    @nickamarit 5 лет назад +2

    To prevent the unibody getting torn out by the rear subframe, the other thing to do is to use aftermarket subframe bushings that have a flat mounting surface. The stock OEM ones have a weird "winged" un-opaque shape, which concentrates the force acting on the unibody to those "wings". The small narrow "wings" act as knives to your unibody, resulting in unibody damage.

Where here in Bulgaria you buy an e36 for let's say 1000$ = 2200bgn (Bulgarian curency) you will surely spend 1000$ more for maintenance and swapping all the fluids, brake discs and calipers, bushings etc etc :D

    Nice! Done these things already except the subframe, will look into that once I have some time to work on it. Although since mine is a Vert and the softtop is utter crap, i have to address that issue first... And so here's a tip: if you can, AVOID E36 verts with bad softtops. Its a pain in the ass to fix/replace and not many services do it properly, also its expensive af.
    Other than that I love my car, lucky to have bought it from a fanatic who owned it for the last 15 years and gave it all the attention, has 275k kms on it and it runs strong and smooth, feels like its immortal

    Cant stress enough how important maintenance is. My own car was in great shape. "Why replace all the radiator hoses, they've been fine so far." Because, when one breaks it will leave you stranded and you'll be lucky if it doesn't do permanent damage to the engine if it gets hot enough. If you haven't changed a hose in ten years or don't know when it was last replaced, do yourself a favor and just change them. Not expensive.

    I remember when my e46 water pump got fucked I was driving the car for weeks and didn't know apart from hearing a rough noise in the engine bay there was no overheating my temperature needle never moved when I finally took it to the mechanic there wasn't any propeller left on the water pump none at all zero its plastic and was splinterd inside the pump but still didn't overheat I guess that's why the called the m54 the bullet proof engine it just keeps going never ever let me down when I finally get rid of this car it gonna be heartbreaking

    I traded my 1st gen Impreza for a 98 E36 328i sedan. I’m already in the process of overhauling the cooling as my water pump has failed on me last week. I don’t think I warped the head on the motor but I’ll check just in case. Also this car has 258k miles on it. It’s a lot of miles on it and so much has to be done on it. It came with K2 racing coilovers. They weren’t adjusted as far as I know. Previous guy just put them and never adjusted them. Actually, he didn’t maintain this car as good.

    If you keep your bmw stock. It will run forever if you:
    1. Do regular fluid changes
    2. Gasket changes
    3. Trace and sort every leak
    4. Be careful with plastic parts (dont brake them)
    5. Renew electrical wires, because they cause the most problems.
    Boom

    I find out the cooling systems go at about a hundred fifty thousand miles it might depend on your years. The radiator usually starts leaking and if that happens you should replace the radiator the water pump and the expansion tank all of the same time to save you money and time. I had a 2001 automatic and it had the dreaded reverse gear problem at 220k other than that I think I would have kept it. I had had Bilstein hp's put in and has some new suspension stuff put in. I thought about getting one of the convertibles like a 2004 to 2006. I have an Infiniti G37 right now. I'd be worried about getting another BMW but they're mostly good just too much plastic. It's sad to this day my BMWs got more intelligent design features than my G
