Good work bro. We made an e46 buyers guide when we first got into them and the video did really well despite being a bad video. This was good and informative. I hope it does well.

11:36 thats m50b25 in e36, not m52. Also i think you forgot to mention increased oil consumption in m54 compared to m52 due to piston rings, but still this video is really good and provides a lot of info.
Good grief this video was a wonderful watch! I'm an M57D30 owner here; got a 02' 330d Touring. Its an absolutely brilliant engine and although it doesn't have much of a personality compared to the M52/M54, its utterly incredible. Great power and easy 50+MPG on my long journies; I love it!
My 03’ 330d touring had 300k miles before i broke it down for parts due to the rust failing inspections. The engine was the first to go to my mate and he has done 50k miles with it since. Not even a hiccup. I would love to do some crazy m57 engine swap to an mx5 or something one day haha

Realy nice video man! 😁 I really like the style of this. The 3 dials, retro gaming style (i really liked the use of TF2/Half Life music, its fits really well!), and the informations about engines are great. Be sure to continue with this style. It would be cool to see engines in other Bmws maybe.. idk e36 (even though e36 is very similar to e46), or maybe some Mercedeses (idk.. w124 maybe) but whatever. With this style you can you video about anything, and it would entertaining anyways :DD Keep it up! Its gooooood.
Thanks so much for your support! I hope to make the next video a mockumentary type video about a car I find really interesting yet underrated, but I for sure will continue to make videos in this style as well. The W124 engines would definitely be something I’d be interested in making, especially considering the 5 cylinder units they fitted 😁
Great video. I only owned a 330i for a short bit but I'm obsessed with classic BMWs all around, so I enjoy learning as much about them as I can. I currently have an E38 750iL with the M73. I love these types of videos so much that I've considered making a similar video on the E38 7 Series too (it'd be simpler than this E46 vid lol).
@@evanhooper1 everything thats plastic and that fails on a bmw should be metal and its metal on other brands who actually care about the car and its longevity not just a product ( this is a shame because bmw would be amazing maybe too good if they stopped cutting corners for better margins w that cheap plastic crap )

Absolutely incredible video! Very comprehensible and easy to understand. Although... If I'm allowed to be a little pedantic just for fun, there is ONE engine not present in the video that was officially fitted to the E46 platform... ...The P60B40 V8 found in the E46 M3 GTR :P

Id like to say, for anyone lookng to buy an e46, go for the 328i version. Simply because the M52TUB28 has better oil control rings around the pistons. The M52 uses much less oil than the M54 does. And while you wont get the power of the M54B30 engine, you can still just swap the headers for catless ones, get the ZHP camshafts and get a proper tune, and you should see power increase from the 192 HP to somewhere around 240.
Owned a M43B19TU and the 1.6 in the e36 I think this M43b19 is a very stout and reliable engine. It feels like raw strong power. My N42B20A e46 wagon was a fiery little beast that wanted to rev and loved but but worst engine to own. M47 and M57 are brilliant but M47 are underappreciated. The M54 is now my daily and love it, lots of maintenance but was a feeling it is to controll one
Great video. A bit of inaccuracies here and there, like how the M52TU would be somewhere in the middle between M52 and M54, but those are things that only people really into these engines would know. M52 it's actually much closer to M54 than to M52. To be honest, BMW should have called the M52TU - > M54 and the M54 -> M54TU; it would have been much closer to reality. Blocks and heads are absolutely the same on the M52TU and M54, headers and intake designs are identical (the intake is just larger or smaller), ECUs are very similar, sensors are the same or similar etc. etc. Essentially, you can convert easily an M52TU to be an M54 or viceversa, but you cannot convert an M52 easily to an M52TU. Some stuff is outright impossible.
- 170hp N46 engine has a different cam (more lift, slightly longer duration) vs the 150hp version. The intake also differs slightly. You cannot just "upgrade" the DME form a e46 N46 with the one of an e90 - the E90 uses a different immobilizer and the wiring harness is different. - the 2.5L M52TU (323i) uses the exact same engine block as the M54 325i (same part number) - blocks that have very little in common with the M52. In fact the 1998-2000 M52TUB25 and 2000-2004 M54B25 share the exact same block and crank. The differences are pistons, rods, intake cam, piston rings, intake manifold, DISA and throttle body (M54 is drive by wire).
I completely forgot about the 170hp version of the N46! The DME upgrade is more of a theoretical upgrade than one that you can actually do. It’s fully possible, but completely over complicated, I just added it as from what I’ve researched, there are VERY few power increasing modifications available for the N4X series of engines. As for the M52TU and M54 similarities, I did miss the block connection between the 2.5 liter variants.
Very good idea for the video, but I would ask for more distinguishing between TU and non TU engines. The M43TU is very different from the non TU M43, as is the M52TU from the M52. Thanks! Yep, it means potential, as in tuning potential to make more power than it does stock. It’s based on both the engines ability to push more power than it did originally as well as the availability of components you can fit to it to boost power (turbos, remaps, bolt ons etc.)
