I've had an E46 320 M Sport in black for 13 years, I've expereinced only three faults, other than brakes, pads, a few bushes are a gear box switch and a one front light unit that needed to be replaced. Now the third fault it won't start. It just makes a buzzing noice from the engine! Very realible otherwise imo.
Congratulations and Thank You....just found your informative site. I am the Original Owner of one of the very first E46's 330ci in the USA. I own a 2000 E46 sedan and I was like, "That happened. That happened too," the whole video. I think sub-frame issues might be the only thing mentioned that I haven't experienced yet. That being said, I sure have enjoyed driving and fixing my E46 the past 18 years I have owned it.

I have had a 2003 E46 330ci for 15 years. Fairly easy car to maintain on your own. I have replaced the cooling system (radiator(changed to aluminum), pump, and hoses), air intake boots, fuel pump and filter, DISA valve, and valve cover gaskets. Parts weren’t that expensive and they all were fairly easy to work on. I love the lines of the car and enjoy driving it (5 speed) and overall maintenance has not been bad for a 17 years old vehicle. Now my e46 M3s, great cars but definitely needs more maintenance. And for those who are wondering, no, I don’t owned these cars because I can’t afford a newer vehicles. I owned them because I like how they look and they are pretty straight forward to work on. Also, I am not really all that I impressed with the looks of most of the newer cars that are currently available; well not impressed enough to give up my funds for one, LoL.
I just happened to come in possession of an E46 a couple years ago. It needed a lot of work so I started looking around and found so many videos on RUclips about fixing them. That had me a little worried, because I figured it meant they had LOTS of problems. But actually I think it is because people really like them, and working on them isn't all that hard. I've done so many DIY repairs to it over the years and have been really happy with it. The only thing I haven't been able to do (probably COULD have, but didn't want to) was replacing the transmission. I had that done at a local BMW shop that I really like.
The extensive use of plastics in newer cars in general will eventually cause more problems. Plastic manifolds, thermostat housings, gears, chain guides etc etc in a high heat environment doesn't bode well.
this car has made me a great mechanic. It has also given me more things to talk about at the bar. I love my E46 so much, But its really getting down to working on it every month... Im changing my cats now. If you guys have a bad thermostat, CHANGE IT ASAP. Other wise be ready to melt your cat. converters
I had an E30 325i and it turned me to a home mechanic too. Fixing an old Toyota and maintaining an ‘09 Lancer is so much easier because of the BMW experience.
I'm an old dealer mechanic now retired. E 46 was my favoritecar. I have 40 years experience. Retired now. Btw never bnever never buy a mini Cooper. Please
@@philosophin9893 because the brake lines run through the fuel tank . Literally through the fuel tank . So simple repairs become incredibly expensive .
Loved the vid. Just got an 04 325i, and already spent what I spent on the car for parts. Lots of deferred maintenance, oil filter housing seal, window regulators, etc. manual trans makes it fun to drive
Im on my 4th E46...2002 330CI Convertible. Its got 221,000 miles. Payed $1800 for it. Guess what, upgraded the entire coolant system...gave her a solid tune up....runs perfect like a "bat out of hell". Long Live the E46!!
Dude ,you are the man. I've been a mechanic for over 35 years and I was always afraid of working on BMWs. I purchased an e46 and love it. Everything you said that would fail did. I've been maintaining the 2004 325i that I purchased for my wife with online parts and so far it's been cool and cheap. The BIG ISSUE IS THAT ITS A SULEV WITH THE NON SERVICEABLE FUEL PUMP. It hasnt failed yet, but I would love to see your thoughts on this expensive journey incase this pump would fail. Please make a video on a sulev pump fail and a fix for it. I think your subscribers would love to here the history and theory of what's going on with the m56 engine no one seems to talk about.
Great vid! Some other common problems with mine were (Xi model): 1) fuel pump failure 2) sunroof cassette failure (cables entwine) 3) real coil springs broke 4) FRONT AXLES, mostly outer CV boots and joints 5) transfer case mount 6) Front and rear axle seal leaks 7) E-brake cables loose or pads worn (manual) Plus more. The E46 is a great gen and not too complicated to work on since its age will need the maintenance. Great car to own if you dont mind getting your hands dirty a bit.
Yup, I've got a 2001 E46 w/ ~100K miles. It's beginning to show its age. Now I know what to watch out for over the next few years. Thanks for the great video.
I got an 1999 E46 328Ci with pretty much exactly 100.000 miles and i have had 0 issues in the engine bay. I replaced some stuff preamptively like the water pump, the engine coolant container and the spark plugs. Other than that I only had to replace most of the bushings underneath the car and that's it. Engine is in top shape, don't know about VANOS but I'll check on that lateron. Still thanks for making this video and sharing your knowledge with us, I will definitely check the VANOS seal as I stated above now that you mentioned it
@@marioosa Damn, it's been 4 years already lol. Yeah I still have it and yes it's still going strong. Only engine related thing that happened was the car throwing a fit once because of the throttle body, that went away by itself though. Two years without any issue regarding that. Otherwise it's the usual E46 headaches. Rust, drive-shaft, axles and the general maintenance items ofc.
Me looking at a local 2003 bmw 238 si coupe 89k miles with the excuse that the map sensor needs replacing automatic transmission for 2700 should I pull the trigger

I have done every one of these repairs one my wife's 325xi. Thank you for your great videos and honest assessment of the e46. Don't let life get you down! You are an extremely talented tech and you never cease to amaze me. Tons of love from Canada.❤
The Cheap fix for burning oil is the catch can , The Best and most expensive fix is the M56 valve cover swap, this completely fixed the 3.0 I swapped last year from using oil, good video guys I am glad to see others doing videos about these cars, I wish you luck with the channel , I subbed and maybe we can work together in the near future.
Thanks and yes the m56 valve cover swap is directly bolt on for most m54b30 with the newer style coils. If you have the square coils you would need to swap to the newer style harness and make a few modifications for it to work 100%. And same to you!
but thats if the valve cover is at fault , my engine had bad piston oil rings and valve stem seals at 70k which I replaced with m52 oil rings and supertech valve seals
This dude is a blessing I just bought a 330i coupe and it needs work transmission interior probably engine work too but this guy right here will get me going 🙏🏽
Die hard fan of E46 325i ,330i and M3 ... Although check engine lights are very tricky, especially for someone like me who's not a mechanic. Just another DIY fan. Thanks for your videos.

IMO E46 is an enthusiast car. With each successive generation, BMW drifts further away from its mission. The E46 models are like the older Porsche cars with simple gauge clusters, great ergonomics, and tight chassis. Since this video E46 prices are going up fast and the low mile, not thrashed ones are becoming very hard to source. The cars have great lines and sturdy drivetrains, and when properly used and maintained, few common issues. Yes, coolant tank, valve cover gasket, and lower control arm bushings. But, after those common faults are corrected, a very dependable car with excellent visibility and fuel economy. A+ to ShopLifeTV for providing these videos. They are always informative and very well produced!
Great video! I've been looking at sub-$2000 manual e46's, and you didn't scare me off. All older cars have problems, and most of what was mentioned here isn't too tough or too expensive to fix. I almost didn't watch because your hair looked so ridiculous, but if I buy an e46 and your vids are all this good, I'll juat have to get used to it, LOL.
My friend. You are the best. Thank you for all your hard work and the amount of time you've spent with this car. It's what I own and I can't afford to pay anyone to do the work but me. So thank you thank you.
Nice video, I have had my E46 328Ci for 6 years now and have taken care of all the things you mentioned under the hood except the oil filter housing gasket, which of course is leaking like a sieve. Great memories of countless hours and small fortunes spent in the garage!
Well done! Very detailed. I had a 94 E36, shame a decade later, mostly the same issues. I loved to drive that car! But it sucked up too much of my life. And now not going to repeat it.
Great video, thanks for all the links! Just got my first BMW, a $1500 2001 325i 5-speed w/ sport package, on which damn near everything works. This info will be invaluable! I'll be replacing the rear brakes, then will have to track down a water leak and replace the windshield cowl. The car has a little rocker surface rust but everyone I've shown it to is amazed at the condition for the price and age (and I LOVE driving it, haha).
Who ever posted this obviously got a lemon, I have owned a BMW for 12 years & it has never missed a beat. It`s like anything you buy, look after it & it lasts!!!
For the DISA I recommend you swap it out for the DrVanos version which is an upgraded version and will give you piece of mind. Also there’s a nut mod for the oil pump which I don’t think he mentioned but that’s mainly on the 330 cars and it’s highly recommended to get the upgraded/mod version which is guaranteed not to come off
My E46 M3 is fairly needy. It's actually quite easy to work on if you don't have to get into the computer. There is a huge aftermarket for parts. Lots of used parts. I started doing 100% of the work myself with my friend. We have done some really big job very successfully. My $100 Bentley manual has been basically useless. I find information everywhere including Facebook photographs!!
E46‘s are high maintanance cars. Every owner has a repair list which is very long 😂 But still a fun car and looks good on some wheels and coilovers. Love my E46 🤷🏼♂️
You're systematically delivering wisdom like a .30 caliber machine gun. ...enjoyed moment 19:42 For me I spent 150 on a Dorman brand DISA and it lasted a few months and then it got all gooey like the oil made it swell up and look like pink melted gel. The dealer one cost more but looks like new 2 years later. Dorman works long enough if you are selling the car in a few weeks.
Pro tip (learned this the hard way) DO NOT overtighten the nuts on the oil level sensor if you need to replace it. The studs will warp and break off. Tighten them with enough force where you think they are secure, don't keep going if you think it's not tight enough as they tend to stretch /warp and break!
I've had most of these problems, and more on my '01 325. My daughter has it now and she'll get rid of it soon. It's a nice car and I love the engine noise as it purrs along the highway, but I probably wouldn't by another BMW though. There is always something wrong with it, and these things add up as it got older.
I always liked the E46 coupe and just bought a cheap 330cd, changing the swirl flaps for blanks is my next job when I change the air filter. Inside mine is in good condition apart from a few marks on the leather bit of rust on the wings and rear arches. Handling is great even with 180,000 miles on the clock but I think it's had a lot of parts replaced. Bit soft on the front end when throwing it hard into corners, other than that it seems perfectly balanced. I've changed the oil and it hardly smokes even hard on the throttle.
Nice video, super thorough. I think the only issue you didn't cover was the HVAC system. Mainly the blower motor resistor or Final Stage Unit as bmw calls it
Had my e46 since Easter. Never owned a BM before this. I’ve learnt so much DIY jobs it’s unreal. If you know nothing about these, then you will know everything after a year of owning one
Just bought a 2005 b330 xi, I have a rumble noise in the rear left wheel, most noticeable when the car is cold, and making a right hand turn while pulling out. it only happens at 5 to 20 mph. Checked the bushings and wheel bearings have no play. also notice the car seems to be moving left and right while hold the wheels straight at speeds over 35mph. also have a pull to the right, when applying brakes, i just installed new brakes and rotors front and back thanks dan.
Very comprehensive. My dad bought a 2001 325i new and that's the car I grew up working on. We ran into almost every problem on this list. After 180k miles and 16 years later I sold it after the reverse gear went out and my foot tired from 6 months of pushing it manually.
Main problems I've had in the year ive owned my '04 330i are 2 window regulators going out (back passenger side both times), pcv value, valve cover gasket and rear main seal leaks. Sitting at 193000ish miles 15k are mine
nice video bro. Love my e46 330xi. Already sorted the DISA, CCV, coolant res, intake boots, VANOS, and a ton of things. Such a brilliant little ride :)
Great video! In my experience for the E46 vs. E90, the E90 breaks less, but the issues are more expensive to fix when they do break, such as the electric water pump. I'm comparing the naturally aspirated E90s such as the N52/N51, the N54 335i is in a completely separate league of maintenance. The E90 also has more electronic stuff like the battery programming, where the E46 is more analog. Also, could you do a video about using INPA for diagnostics? That might help a lot of people who are scared of the electronics. I seem to hear about many people who shy away from them because of "dealer only" stuff which could really be fixed by using INPA.
having owned both a 325ci and a 335i... the 325ci has been the lowest running costs of anything I have ever owned and the 335i the highest... was crazy....
I used to think my car had problems.. because of this video I can drive a little more at ease knowing compared to other BMW's my 05 E46 with 88K miles has almost none of these issues :') awesome video! On the path of being a famous BMW E46 Channel! You're the best! Thanks!
Leonardo Flores I have a ‘99 318i with barely 80k on it too, had it for only a month this far and 0 issues, checked all the service history and everything seems clean 😂but I’m still paranoid every day when I turn it on....hopefully it stays reliable
You shouldn't curse yourself. Herein Canada my dads 06 325 has 103,000 kms (60,000)miles and all oil seals leak. My 02 RSX with 90,000 miles has no oil seal leaks from the original seals
Great video as usual! I have 2 E46's; a 325i sedan automatic (daily) and a M3 coupe 6MT (project car). It really helps to have such great content from channels like yours!
Poodle in the background...yeeessss!! Ditto..on the E46. replaced the entire cooling system..and I mean EVERYTHING for under $200. Took me about 2 hours. Also converted to the electric fan. I also changed my motor mounts which was pretty easy. I love this car, drives awesome with 180k. Great video
thank you man , ive been watching your videos for some time, but i never owned an bmw :D used to drive lexus,honda,toyota,mitsubishi.. and now a couple days ago i bought e46 328 coupe. You are enlighting me.
Good video.. damn there are so much.. but got it pretty much repaired thanks to you bro. I ended up buying another e46.. now i got three.. its awesome though
Thank you for making this video! You are very knowledgeable and this video is super helpful. I just bought a 2003 320i with 83000 km as a project and this video gives me a direction to diagnose the potential issues on my car. I will start to look at the issues you pointed out first. Hopefully, there won't be too many issues to be fixed...
Mickey Bauer if you find one with a clean car fax, with a good service history you’ll be okay. The reason BMW gets the bad rep it does is because most owners TRASH these cars
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO helpful i have a 2004 330ci, the 3 lights come on on the cluster Now i know to clean the ABS sensors !!! Big thanks for that , But Despite all , The E46 is Great car alot of Bang for your buck with a 330 !!! Thanks again Great helpful vid
Mines a 2001 330 I have had 1 or 2 of these issues but with this information you can prevent and prepare and get cheep parts from scrap yards and enjoy a great car
Nice and comprehensive video. Tip for interior cloth on pillars is to use a glue stick (like the ones you used in grammar school) to re-glue the cloth back to the pillars. I never had problems with my headliner so that might take a little more time. A, B, and C pillars are easy to re-glue especially if you taken them off the car first. My vanos never went out and it might be due to various treatments done to the car such as a double oil change to reduce buildup in the vanos and increase the clearance on the metal bushings. The timing belt tensioner which is a plastic plate that the chain runs on gets worn over time as well. Nice vid
Mines a 1999 320i e46. 240,000 km. Body's fine, leather interior, and its treated me well. Had since 2005. But unfortunately shes time to be retired. Will cost too much to fix. Always the steering and front suspension probably the roads here. Have most of those issues too. Roof liner, airbag lift that I've spent over 2k to fix but still kept coming back. Had to use some chewing gum inside the dash to hide the light to get my last cert/wof. The rest is fine but cost is more than it's worth now. And with a bad front windscreen stone chip/crack. Sad shes due for scrap or firesale now. I love the e46.
Bought my E46 and have had to replace just about every single part. Nice cars but be prepared to rebuild everything on it if it was neglected in the slightest.
The problems that I have had with my m43 316i 2001 sedan. Antenna amplifier for the door lock. Door lock breaking Vacuum pump that starts when you start the car Valve cover gasket, Oil leak in the oil filter housing, Oil leaks from the chain cover Had to replace the starter, had to remove the whole intake to change it. Front lights fogging up. Generally plastic breaking when you disassemble stuff.
Super video mate! I ve been planning to get my very first E46 3 series coupe, having watched your video now I know what to expect, luckily quite a few seem to be DIY-able. I am feeling more confident with getting myself one soon! Cheers for all your tips! i m also your latest subscriber!
About the subframe mounts cracking, the convertibles were never affected, as the extra bracing and supports due to the lack of... well, a roof, they had to reinforce that whole area. I think it was 2001 that they "made changes" to the sedan, coupe, and wagon, however i'm almost certain cars up to 2005 still had the issue
Do everything he says! I replaced most coolant parts except thermostat and expansion tank, and those both failed at 130K. Expansion tank leaked out all coolant and almost over heated the engine. Also replaced front control arms, and had vacuum leaks from failed rubber. Car also burns and leaks out. Don't buy if you can't work on them yourself! AWD is very good.
I had a 2000 328I. The subframe mounting cracked in 2009. I took it to the dealer in Toronto and they gave me a written repair estimate of $14,000. I called BMW Canada and they told me to take it back to the dealer and they repaired it for free.
Great video. Thanks very much for what is basically a public service announcement: Don't buy an e46 unless you are mechanically inclined and really love working on over-rated German cars.
@Chaminda Thushara Ruwan Kasturi Thanks for the feedback. I love these cars. I grew up in Munich, home to BMW, and in the 1970s my father drove the family to Italy and France and Austria in a BMW 2800, which was followed by a 320i, a 316i, a 525i and a 528i. In California I've been driving a BMW 325i (e46). Recent models are pretty high-maintenance and require a fair degree of mechanical skill and tools. The problem for people who don't have the means or skill to fix their own cars is that BMW commands a premium because of its luxury status. Repair bills in the thousands of dollars are commonplace. Like all mass produced cars these days, there's lots and lots of plastic and rubber, to comply with emissions requirements. So there's my two cents.
Common problems? The whole car lol. I've owned a 2003 330xi for 3 years now and have easily replaced most of the car, but I love this car too much to sell it :P.
I just bought a 2003 330xi 5spd Manual, i need to replace the door lock cylinder, the e brake isn’t working (I’m assuming the cable needs to be adjusted), power steering line, driver control arm is bad and when i press the gas with the hood open, i hear like a hissing sound, I’m not sure if there’s a hole in the intake boot or something

Absolutely agree with you about look of new cars.

Please
Why ? The Mini has all the BMW technology built in ...
Recently went from a Mini S to an E46 and I'm really starting to doubt my abilities in choosing cars.
Jeez, this model of bmw sounds like it’s a piece of shit.

@@philosophin9893 because the brake lines run through the fuel tank . Literally through the fuel tank . So simple repairs become incredibly expensive .
I have an e46 and an e36 and your channel has literally kepts my cars on the road. Thank you so much!!

This guy is terrific! There is no one in line with a more detailed an in-depth knowledge. Keep it up.
Great vid!
Some other common problems with mine were (Xi model):
1) fuel pump failure
2) sunroof cassette failure (cables entwine)
3) real coil springs broke
4) FRONT AXLES, mostly outer CV boots and joints
5) transfer case mount
6) Front and rear axle seal leaks
7) E-brake cables loose or pads worn (manual)
Plus more. The E46 is a great gen and not too complicated to work on since its age will need the maintenance. Great car to own if you dont mind getting your hands dirty a bit.
i prefer the e36 or e30
fuel pump failed today left me stranded 😓
got an 2004 E46 330i Touring with 365000 kms. Nothing dramatic ever happened while i perform preventive maintenance. Saves money and frustrations
Yup, I've got a 2001 E46 w/ ~100K miles. It's beginning to show its age. Now I know what to watch out for over the next few years. Thanks for the great video.
Still got it? How is it
I got an 1999 E46 328Ci with pretty much exactly 100.000 miles and i have had 0 issues in the engine bay. I replaced some stuff preamptively like the water pump, the engine coolant container and the spark plugs. Other than that I only had to replace most of the bushings underneath the car and that's it. Engine is in top shape, don't know about VANOS but I'll check on that lateron.
Still thanks for making this video and sharing your knowledge with us, I will definitely check the VANOS seal as I stated above now that you mentioned it
Hi,
Do still have the this BMW ?
Is it still going strong?
@@marioosa Damn, it's been 4 years already lol. Yeah I still have it and yes it's still going strong.
Only engine related thing that happened was the car throwing a fit once because of the throttle body, that went away by itself though. Two years without any issue regarding that.
Otherwise it's the usual E46 headaches. Rust, drive-shaft, axles and the general maintenance items ofc.

Nathan subs you must be a rock star...Nathan is da M54 bomb
This dude is a blessing I just bought a 330i coupe and it needs work transmission interior probably engine work too but this guy right here will get me going 🙏🏽

ShopLifeTV, thanks for subbing to me on Instagram a while back! I'm grammariannazi. Keep up the great videos, I love them!
I am looking at buying a manual one with 170k miles and I’m scared of the car now lol. I appreciate this video !
Very accurate !!! i have all those issues... and now i had to rebuild the gearbox , also known issue after 100K miles
Auto or manual?
I have an E46 330i, alot of issues pop up, but what a great car to drive. I got the M sport package. UDM is perfect description.
Thank you so much for these videos. I have a E46 M3 and it's a blast to drive. Your DIYs has helped me save a lot of money as well.
Well done! Very detailed. I had a 94 E36, shame a decade later, mostly the same issues. I loved to drive that car! But it sucked up too much of my life. And now not going to repeat it.
But you watched.. did you change your mind and get another one? 😏
Best presentation and coverage of common BMW 3 series issues on RUclips. Thanks for sharing. Where is your shop or garage?
A year later and I’m using every video for reference. Very helpful man. And I think it’s safe to say I have of few 323’s in great condition.
Dude you're awesome bmw teacher
You’re telling me brah. The father I never had
E46‘s are high maintanance cars. Every owner has a repair list which is very long 😂 But still a fun car and looks good on some wheels and coilovers. Love my E46 🤷🏼♂️
Keep them coming your videos have saved me so much money and given me so much knowledge
You're systematically delivering wisdom like a .30 caliber machine gun.
...enjoyed moment 19:42
For me I spent 150 on a Dorman brand DISA and it lasted a few months and then it got all gooey like the oil made it swell up and look like pink melted gel.
Same thing goes for other bmw made vehicles. I got a 08' mini cooper s that I already broke two of the valve cover bolts from over tightening
Same with valve cover bolts
I've had most of these problems, and more on my '01 325. My daughter has it now and she'll get rid of it soon. It's a nice car and I love the engine noise as it purrs along the highway, but I probably wouldn't by another BMW though. There is always something wrong with it, and these things add up as it got older.
19:45 the dog made me LOL, the look on his face was priceless. Nice break in this serious video.
Thank you for making my decision for me. 350z enthusiast or touring it is.
A video on changing the Transmission Oil Cooler lines would be cool. Yet to see anyone on RUclips do such a video.
I have the same car, did you have any transmission issues?
nice video bro.
Just named every issue I have with my 01 330 .. from the quart of oil to the windshield cowel LOL.. great vid
I used to think my car had problems.. because of this video I can drive a little more at ease knowing compared to other BMW's my 05 E46 with 88K miles has almost none of these issues :') awesome video! On the path of being a famous BMW E46 Channel! You're the best! Thanks!

Nice vid

I'm looking to buy one myself, please say the one you didn't have is the cracked subframe
@@maschou333 so have you bought one yet?
No I ended up deciding to save up for a newer one
About the subframe mounts cracking, the convertibles were never affected, as the extra bracing and supports due to the lack of... well, a roof, they had to reinforce that whole area. I think it was 2001 that they "made changes" to the sedan, coupe, and wagon, however i'm almost certain cars up to 2005 still had the issue
E46 hands down - & they hold there value
Do everything he says! I replaced most coolant parts except thermostat and expansion tank, and those both failed at 130K. Expansion tank leaked out all coolant and almost over heated the engine. Also replaced front control arms, and had vacuum leaks from failed rubber. Car also burns and leaks out. Don't buy if you can't work on them yourself! AWD is very good.
my wallet just sharted a little
I had a 2000 328I. The subframe mounting cracked in 2009. I took it to the dealer in Toronto and they gave me a written repair estimate of $14,000. I called BMW Canada and they told me to take it back to the dealer and they repaired it for free.
25? Sounds like hundreds. Holy hell. You are very cunning on the cars though.
