The E36 is like the middle child that contributes a lot to the family, but nobody really talks about. I'm not a big BMW fan but I think it's one of the best cars of its time.
Gladius Nice M3 GT in a unique colour! But never was a fan of the E36 family. My favourite M3 will allways be the E46 M3 CSL! ;-)
I'd definitely own an E36 M3 but I also think that the E46 M3 is the most beautiful and refined. Its at an absolute sweet spot in time. It has aged very well.
@@PorscheGTRSWeissach e46 m3 motor explodes from rod bearing issues.
S65,s85 same deal.
They made motors that did not last!
E36 3.2 is far superior in build quality than the s54 poser 3.2
🤣
In Europe at least. US version was awful. I owned one.
@@cwx8 Yeah I heard about that. 240 something hp. But hey, at least you got the M5 with a manual transmission.
The E36 M3 is my favourite generation of the M3. Quite underrated but it is just perfect in my eyes.
Best road going one too. E30 is tiresome to drive, the E46 too complicated and highly strung. E90, well I love it but you have to be going crazy fast to enjoy it.
Agreed. So much so that I bought a 3.2 Evo about 5 years ago and have never looked back. Beautiful car
@@seanoconnor8135 😍
The E36 is a charming car overall. People get sedans, tourings, coupes and all fall in love with e36. Im a TI fan and i cant wait to put a m52b28 in my 316ti :)
in terms of style it's one of the best cars of all time.
This is perhaps the most beautiful looking E36 M3 of all. That bodywork, that wing, those wheels and most importantly that green paint! It's quite a looker!
The wing is actually my least favorite part, looks a bit heavy handed on the otherwise quite subtle but purposeful shape. Agree about the colour though, a shame so many manufacturers have stopped offering dark green as a colour choice, it looks really cool on many cars!
@@soundseeker63 This car was built for homologation - including the wing. With the risers installed, that's almost exactly the wing they ran on the race car (though the actual race wing has an adjustable angle of attack).
You get it
This green paint is awesome, but E46 M3 look way better.
@@soundseeker63 you should se the M3 LTW wing then
As an E36 M3 owner it's hard to find good honest reviews on them. Thank you for producing this, well done folks and keep up the good work.
I agree Many reviews can't get past the detuned engine in the US. I bet few have driven a US version, as they would learn it's not detuned, it is a different tune, more for torque over the full Rev range rather than top end power. It's an entirely different engine that is amazing in its own way.
John Pearson the problem is not it’s detuned, people are complaining because it’s not the real m3 motor but it’s just a stroked m50 (328i) unlike the euro version the motor comes with ITBs and a more advanced vanos system thus giving a more power bump of 321 hp compared to 240 on the US soil
@@CGM350 of course it's a real m3 engine. It came out of the same factory and was designed by the same people.
As a previous E36 M3 owner, (1995 US spec) and having owned 3 other BMW's since, I can honestly say, that it was by far the best handling, braking, sounding BMW of the lot. Perfect weight distribution and awesome brakes. I loved that car. Loved the stealthy sound and power band loved to rev! Inline 6 was the best ever! No problems ever.
I have a problem of buying one as a "beater" back in 2020. After I dumped a few grand into her and she's almost back to her showroom days I'm stuck with it being my ONLY car and I know if something happens I'll never be able to buy another.
Okay, this series is EPIC
One of the best looking m3s IMO. Clean yet purposeful, especially in that green.
enthusiast love for all things M3 related! these content series are just fabulous.
Indeed
Great colour. Amazing interior.
I've only seen 2 this color in the states
Lighter then an e46, more comfortable then an e30.
Also a lot faster than the e30.
Also more reliable, if you get the non Evo model.
than, not then, ffs!
Also much better looking than the 70s nodding E30 and old man's E46.
This is the most perfect bmw ever made in my opinion, you can't beat the look of the e36 with the vador seats and the suede inserts and carbon fiber bits and pieces, remember this car is pre 2000's so carbon fiber was only on super high end supercars back then 🔥🔥
I had a 1997 E36 M3 and I loved it. What a great car to drive on the back roads!
My neighbor just had his red E36 M3 out yesterday. It's got vader seats and that same wing. The thing is perfect
Vader seats are overrated garbage, heavy and not supportive at all, you need a pure fixed back racing bucket
The E36 is essentially an E30 for grown-ups. In the post-facelift version you had a naturally aspirated 3.2 that produced more than 100 HP per liter. Very few production cars at the time (late 90's) would go that far, like the F355. And it was not a compromised daily, it had a decent sized trunk and actually usable back seats.
Question is what they really delivered IRL. 35 more PS but the acceleration difference is at best, negligible.
@@miljororforsprakpartiet290 huh? Stock for stock. The e36 m3, regardless of spec destroys an e30m3 in all performance metrics.
@@Euphorica I talk 3.2 vs GT.
@@miljororforsprakpartiet290 my misunderstanding
@@miljororforsprakpartiet2903.2 definitely quicker then GT. Check my channel. I do rolling race against chip-tuned M3GT with my 3.2 from about 100km/h.
Its still great fun at the track. It was 10 years ahead of its time
All it needs is poly bushes, later 3.2 E36 M3 front top hats swapped left to right for 2.5degrees of negative front camber, and align about 1.5degrees of rear camber, close to zero front and half a degree rear toe in, after that coil-overs if needed. She’ll handle like a dream with almost all stock parts.
Great to see the GT reviewed! I own one since 2002 and really love it.
I sold mine in 2002 ;(
The e36 is such a raw car. One of the best produced by bmw
I have to say that's how I've always described my US spec E36 M3..."raw". It's also tossable and doesn't feel as heavy as the E46.
@@zscottsmith agreed brotha. Sounds like you really enjoy the car!
Best looking of all of them imo
Nah...f82 looks the best, e30 is the best.
@@DexxonGamer77 4pot and a space ship is not an m car.
Much cleaner than the ricey and bloated e46.
Totally agree with you. The E36 had bags of character & personality my Fav m3 i had a couple of them years ago when they were around 4 or 5 grand id love another now but cant afford to buy one lol
I wanted to have a life like that guy in the video, testing cars, making videos showing his impressions, it must be really good, the best part is obviously driving these cars
I'm not a huge BMW fan but the 2nd and 4th gen M3's look stunning!
the E36 M3 GT is like the GTA VCS of the GTA series.
one of the best, but criminally underrated.
I like how you put that
I'm absolutely loving the attention to detail with regards to the various model specifics Henry, you've done your homework!
Nice watch. The speedy is such an iconic watch.
Noticed the wrist candy too
It's not my favorite M3 but this just looks phenomenal in that green and the e36 looks the part with the spoiler.
The bit about needing suspension modifications is spot on. After a set of quality coilovers, the e36 is completely transformed into the most fun car I've ever driven. So good I haven't been able to stay away from them for the last 7 years..
Great vid. Nothing can beat that straight six sound, I remember driving my friends ltd Edition E36 M3 R as I’m in Aus and that car has never been forgotten.
Nice timepiece Henry! Oh and the video was great too 😊
I don't even like BMWs but I'm making sure I watch ever one of these videos, really indepth information on each car.
Great video!
E36 is the most iconic bmw to me.
Can’t wait until you reach the F80 part.
I hope there are more series like this to come...
It’s just gorgeous in this green
See a M3 video, instant like. One of my favorite cars of all time.
The production quality I came here for, is the production quality I got, thank you Henry.
SPEEDMASTER spotted! Just acquired a 1994 Euro M3, what a fun machine.
I would buy an E36 M3 just for its glorious engine, which to me is the best sounding inline 6 BMW has ever made !
I never knew I could fall more in love with an E36
Why isn't Henry with Chris Harris on top gear?
Henry is a real car guy....
Chris is awesome too tho
@@krishmangat3224 IMO there are 4 or 5 very good testers/reviewers/whatever you want to call them. The top two, in my opinion, are Henry & Chris. Henry just doesn't spend quite as much time looking out the side window! 🤣
Both are excellent drivers and both are very knowledgeable. The ability to technically describe the car is at least as important as the ability to drive quickly.
E36 was my first experience in a M car from new, with that l always going to love it.
a homage to the times when driving and cars were simpler and the what was in the person mattered more than what was in the car! wonderful video once again guys! Keep the great stuff coming!!
Cant wait for the CSL E46 M3 video
Rare to see a review of the Euro E36 M3, so credit to sourcing one. The euro s50b30 sounds so good and the comparison with the E30 M3 is spot on too in terms of handling.
I just love the e36's, I am now 23... owned 7. daily driven them, tracked them and drifted them... but yet they are not perfect, you just make them perfect. Thats what I just love about the e36's
I want this particular vehicle! You can’t tell me otherwise, I WANT THIS!!!!!
I am definitely not a BMW guy, but if i had to pick one model from this manufacturer, this is the M3 E36!! In my eyes the most iconic BMW ever.
As a teen my dream car at the time was an M3 Evo in blue. But this green looks amazing especially in such good condition
Why the hell didn't I know about this Carfection series? Well, I will watch all the videos, but I know this second one will be my favourite! I'm in love with the E36 since I was a child...the sound of its six cylinders gave me the idea of a BIG engine, as I was used to the "normal" four cylinder cars. It has aged perfectly; even the interior looks good today! #E36Love!
E92 easily the best shape, stunning! E30 and E36 still look amazing though, especially the E36 in that green, superb!
I would be overwhelmed with emotion if I got to drive that car
My dad has a E36 323i Cabrio. Having been in various generations of 3 Series', the E36 is definitely my favourite; lightweight, fabulous chassis, more than enough power, great styling (imo) and really dependable! Would love to get my hands on an M3 someday...
The noise this thing makes is amazing
Had E30, E34, E36, and E46.... e36 fav
Seriously? Why?
I never knew about the LHD being a real GT and the RHD being a M3 with a bodykit! ;-)
Great series. Thanks to everyone at Carfection!
The owner of this probably cringed when it started to rain. Fine example of an M3.
DarrelCooper if it was my e30 i would of left ..cars already pretty old and Weather out in the UK is shit.
The owner of this car is likely British and would have never once driven it if he wasn't willing to drive it in the rain.
Lovely video, can’t believe I sold mine. Or the M Coupé I had after the GT. Such machines! Driving an F80 competition pack nowadays and it’s just not the same anymore. Oh well, also didn’t have a 8 week old boy back then. Life goes on.
YES THE E36 EPISODE IS HERE
The e36 m3 green looks fantastic!!
I had a 95 (US market) M3 with an upgraded suspension and the thing rode on rails. It really blew me away. I've got an opportunity to pick up a buddies 97 4 door M3, I might just have to take him up on that offer.
that glorious exhaust note!
I own a US Spec 3.2 E36 M3 S52, I feel like people underestimate the US spec. I have been able to beat S2000(My friends), Pontiac G8 GT, GT86s(Ik not fast, but beat quite a few), Camaro V6(Newer one can't tell the gen tbh), Dodge RT truck, Ford Fusion Sport(haha ik, not a typical race), Pontiac GTO, Mini cooper S(light upgrades), Lexus 350 F sport, Subaru WRX( and STI!), Dodge Charger RT(older model) And quite a few more but can't quite remember. Either way the US and Euro spec aren't much different acceleration wise until after 100 mph so I have heard, and plus these cars weren't meant for straight line, they are all rounded cars!
In my opinion the US spec car was not bat at all, but it was more a 330i / 332i as it didn't have a real Motorsport engine, no ITB's, less revs, less power and so on. Chassis was good, engine was good and gearbox also. So in comparison to the EURO spec, it wasn't as special.
@@farturinn whats a real motorsport engine?
@@jonathanmoga5188 Lmao right? The S52 was more reliable 😂
Jon M an engine designed and developed by the Motorsport division exclusively for a M car.
The US S50/S52 versions were not, they are definitely not bad engines but essentially higher capacity M50 series engines, “same” cylinder head design (same head bolts) and intake.manifold with single throttle body, simpler exhaust manifold design. I’m sure you know all about it.
The Australian only M3R was the ultimate e36, also a homologation special, for production car racing, more power and aero that included a splitter that extended forward of the bumper profile
I've only ever seen one for sale about 15 years ago. It was in unique car magazine and was about $30k AUD.
pokinacha Duttons sold one earlier this year, and I know of 2 others around, but most are buried in garages
notso100 any idea what it sold for?
@@pokinacha Sorry, I don't know
Love that Raspy metallic straight six noise
Considering I have had 4 e36 and 1 e46 and the 46 is no longer with me but 3 of 4 e36s are i love these cars never had a proper M car but this gt car is killer and I would love to have a day in it
As a car collecter E36 M3 is my favourite Bmw of all time
I feel like hes one of the trolls in the comment sections talking smack about it all these years, but really has no clue about it.
Then he drove it and was floored. Ya its a properly good m3.
Over here we have S50B32 E36 M3 which doing 321 HP , 3.2 Liters and 6 Gear. Love this car especially in techno violet and estoril blue.. E30-E36-E46❤️❤️❤️❤️
I own a silver grey e46 m3, manual no sunroof, I love it but that e36 m3 GT is stunning.
Great car no doubt, but the epitome of the E36 generation is the Evo with 3.2 liter engine, 6-speed gearbox, and aluminum doors.
Aluminium doors - and curb weight is still almost 1500kg
But this is the ultimate Euro homologation version. Each of the gens of M3 he’s looking at focusses on that special breed rather than the run of the mill. I loved the extra torque of the E36 Evo but the shift of that six speeder was always horrible compared to the five.
@@r129r16pfl 6 spd gearbox they say...heavier. 210mm diff they say...also heavier. Lol.
That car is gorgeous in that shade of green!
I wish he also had a sympathetically modified e36 to get into. This is the most heavily modified M3 generation and the only one where true enthusiasts will not denounce modifications because we all know the car as stock was a bit crap. But with a few tweaks, it's amazing, one of the best cars ever made!
I can let him have a go in my Bi-Turbo M3 GT :)
To be fair are all "a bit crap" stock. They even the e30. It was tuned for the street afterall. They all need some tweaks to get the most out of it.
The E36 M3 is huge bang for your buck! But Ill stick to my E30 M3 :-)
Thanks for this Henry, I am a GT owner, GT#111 so extra appreciation here. Which the video would have been longer :).
Had it since 2007. Love it to bits, albeit I have screwed mine up a bit with some modifications. I bought it initially to use as a track tool, wanted an E36 due to the low cost of body panels and then decided to get the GT as it looked completely different due to the color scheme. when I bought it it was about 40% more expensive than a run of the mill (good) S50B30 M3.
Unfortunately (or fortunately for us owners) there are not that many around any more. I would guess that maybe between 150-180 cars are still alive in roadworthy form. Since it was so expensive, and in a Green on Green only combo, and with the S50B32 around the corner many of the GT's went unloved for a long time, some got turned into full race-cars, others rusted away. I for example bought the engine out of GT #108 as the body was completely rusted away. Another GT got totaled here in Luxembourg (rolled). The fun bit now is that it starting to get some recognition, took my GT to the annual MOT the other day, and every time I parked the car I had someone come over to ask if it was a real GT, because they had never seen one in real life :)
GT #111? With the twin turbo conversion? I used to own GT #293... Great car, still miss it. ;-)
Jurgen Room yes it’s the twin turbo, and a few other mods. Cosmetically now mostly OEM, except the wheels, as I need 18” to clear the brakes the cage, Recaros and harnesses are out. .
@@farturinn, glad to hear you're taking her back to former glory! :-)
Jurgen Room thanks, only OEM’d the interior, not reverting the performance mods any time soon, too much fun to drive it like this
@@farturinn, unfortunately i'm from Belgium. And with the annual Technical Control here it is nearly impossible to modify your car. Especially performance upgrades; no added turbos or superchargers here. Even a exhaust without manufacturers approval is tricky...
saw one of these today and then stumbled across this video! Wild!
I have an E46 now. I liked my E36 better.
Adrian Smith really? I have an E36 but always wanted to get an E46. Can you elaborate on why you prefer the E36?
@@gabrielsandoval4994. Maybe because its more Handful to Drive
Thanks for that review - i always loved the e36 M3 for its engine and subtle looks. And especially for the Vader seats, these just were so special.
Fun fact: the first M3 to have the iconic double spar mirrors actually were the last season e30 M3 Group A cars, although they used a slightly smaller version more fitting to the e30.
Amazing series, iconic cars, can't wait for 3rd episode :P GREAT JOB
The E36 is my favorite model of the M3. Maybe cause I used to own one and may be biased... but it was a great car and wouldn’t mind owning one again
How was the maintenance and reliability? Was it the 3.2 version?
@@alper694 It was a long time ago. It was a 3.2 and I loved it
Had a 1996 M3 3,2 coupé between 2002 and 2004. 6 speed manual, derestricted and slightly lowered on Eibach springs. Great car! Outran the police three times when they tried to give me speeding tickets and no doubt a long ban. Two times was on the motorway and one time on A-roads :)
0:49 OMG!! A car from my year that sounds that good!
I love the color, interior and exterior.
This is by far my favourite car of all time
E36 was also available in Australia and not de-turned
Wow ce modele présenté est vraiment en superbe état!
amazing car
brilliant video
This car in silver and you have one of my childhood dreams. I'd still take it in green. :)
Another great video from you guys! Cant wait to see the rest of them...
Loving these informative videos Henry.
Arguably one of the best sounding m3s of all time. E92 is the best. But the sound of the e36 m3 engine reving up to 7000 is just exhilarating. Great video.
Sorry. That opening exhaust clip sounded like an Accord with a "fart can" muffler.
That would be all I would change- love the rest of this car.
@@joelspaulding5964 the evo m3 doesn't sound like that. Strangely that Gt sounds different. I have one. It doesn't sound like that when revving
The M3 3.0/GT and the 3.2 do have alot more than just the engine that separates them. The 3.2 contains quite a bit of evolution.
How much nostalgia for the 90s by reviewing those plastic interiors!
I'll do a review of mine: sagging glove box cover, worst cup holders in the world and a cabin air filter that is hidden behind a Rube Goldberg device. Still a wonderful car though! :)
Calling the US version "slightly detuned" is being very kind! Great film, can't wait for E46.
They are underrated ...so its actually pretty accurate
Excellent video - again. Never loved the the e36 (too much in love with the e30) but it has grown on me over the years. I have to agree with your assessment - very good looking car that needs some tweaks to shine. Also, it’s the most affordable of the bunch!
Would buy one but I just got my e30 M3 out of storage and have it on the road again - what could be better??
Nothing...
I had a E36 M3 1999 and I love that thing. Somebody hit me and I had to get the whole front replaced and I sold it shortly after. Bought a Volkswagen GTI 2015 and I still miss my M3. Looking at buying one pretty soon but not sure if I should go E46 or E36 I might just do both.
What a gorgeous car! I love it in British racing green! That is the best this car has ever looked!
I have the Cabriolet 3.2 Evo version. The engine is a screamer. Above 4000rpm it really pulls.
Australia got the E36 M3R, this was a homologation special produced by Frank Gardner Racing in partnership with BMW Motorsport for racing in Australia....only 15 were made.
The E36 M3 3 2 is probably neck on neck with the E46 M3. It's an amazing car
It's the real 3.2
Spent so much time chasing to buy one of these in my teenage years. Finally had a chance in my 30’s and remember I went after the e36 because I thought I would never be able to afford and e46 M3.....so I bought the e46
I've always loved those wheels.
The E36 has never done anything for me, ever, but this car is the genuine hotness.
Wonderfully presented, thank you
