I love my US e36 M3 coupe. You nailed a lot of reasons, styling being the biggest. The e36 looks so cool and the e46 looks like a bar of soap. I also much prefer the e36 interior, it feels ergonomically perfect and they don't wear as poorly as e46 interiors which all feel cheap to me. The e36 also a bit more raw and exciting to drive, the lack of refinement makes it more visceral. I have driven a few e46 M3s, they are great cars and do perform better. However my heart gets pulled toward the e36 every time.

I paid a premium for a 37k mile 1999 M3 in Estoril (US Spec) over the E46 which I could have easily bought for the same money or less because of 2 things; 1. this was the car that I wanted in high school that got me into the brand 2. I have not seen another around in as good of condition. E46s are all over the place in the US.

Get one from the late e46 330i or Z4 M, swap it in (it's plug&play btw), get a good alignment then witness the biggest transformation of your car. It sharpens everything and it makes the car feel lighter and somehow younger without losing that driving feel that makes e36s great.

I couldn't agree more Alex, I love the E36 chassis my godfather owned a '98 5 speed manual Alpine white E36 M3 coupe on LTW wheels just like yours for about 10 years and I fell in love with it, he just recently sold it and is planning buying an E90 M3. For my first car I just recently bought a '98 5 speed E36 328i sedan with the optinal sport package from the factory and I couldn't be happier it's so torquey that it will throw me back in 1st, 2nd and alittle in 3rd, I have even done some roll races from 35mph *in Mexico* with my good friends stock Subaru 2004 WRX that has a 5 speed manual and I kept up right along side of him. E36 gang forever!
E36 M3 is an awesome car. Somehow it looks and sounds more brutal than E46 M3 (I like E46 M3 too, considering actually if should buy one of those as a daily driver)
Alex, you do realise your driver's side front wing is aftermarket? Look at the placement of the indicator on both sides. On the passenger side, it's against the wheel (correct), on the driver's side, it's against the door. It's clearly visible in this vid. I've seen this more than once.
+Yuchigo3 well, as mentioned in my first comment: I've seen this so many times, it's something I automatically check for. Just as pre-facelift models with the old side indicators, many have left/right switched. Then they are mounted upsidedown.
I made the same decision last year, I do know the e46 m3's are awesome - but my 2 reasons (outside of your correct looks and noise reasons!) were 1. replacement parts - for the e36 M3, although rare in full car form, parts are a plenty and SOOOOO much cheaper than the e46 M3. And - 2. Classic car insurance!!! Mine is a 1995 s50b30 - and I pay £198 full comp a year!!! Who doesn't love that??? Also, mine is black, which, sorry is the only colour to have your M3 (Sorry Colin!) - if White is not your 1st choice... White of course is the best of all - especially in e30 / e36 guise...
I just bought a E36 325is and the car is super fun, I really want a M3 but here in Brazil is hard to find any M3 and wen you find one it is really expensive. But anyways even a 2.5L is a lot of fun

Well, these E36s are really awesome! I have a '96 328i saloon with manual transmission (German Spec, living in Brazil), used to be a garage queen. I have the car for about one year and a half, put 8,000 miles on it and now the car has 42,000 miles (67.000 Km). It rides like a new car, just refreshed suspension, brakes and cooling. It's awesome, even being 20 years old now (almos my age!). Keep your E36 M3 Evo for life, Alex! You are annoying, but we can pretty much ignore that if you keep loving your M3! Cheers

I actually agree on the looks because I do the E36 design is better but given the fact that the E36 here in the US as you said only had 250 HP, I think when I eventually go after one (because I've been interested in M3s for a while) I'm gonna grab an E46.

LOL Note about the reliability, here in North America the E36 M3 is way more reliable than the E46 M3, no subframe issues, simpler electronics and less complex construction. E36s are also way cheaper than the E46 here cause we got the neutered engine and they are pretty common (relatively).

It's kinda like my Mitsubishi cordia in Malaysia there are 4 of em on the road(I guess according to jpj(Malaysian dmv) out of the 721 cordias imported here only 4 are registered and with live owners 10 of em with dead owners 459 crushed and the rest were imported back to Japan in 1998 (these cars were taken by the government) it is almost impossible to see one on the road (except mine I drive it everyday)

It's stock too, it's called a super shift). While the m roadster I got was converted into a 6 speed auto and with all this rice crap giving it an am extra 200kilos in weight (there was more mods I just didn't mention it)

Older cars often give you a better driver experience as there are less electronic Aids and are lighter. I have a Clio sport 172 and it virtually has no aids at all and is really light, admitted its as reliable as something which is not very reliable. In the States, it's often better to get the 328i rather than the M3. Since it's far cheaper in certain areas, and the power difference isn't too much of a problem. Plus you can get M3 trim pieces and suspension components.

for me, it was the cheaper insurance. back in the day i bought a wrx estate and the coverage was $800 cheaper than the sedan. and i can carry more.

It's kinda like my Mitsubishi cordia in Malaysia there are 4 of em on the road(I guess according to jpj(Malaysian dmv) out of the 721 cordias imported here only 4 are registered and with live owners 10 of em with dead owners 459 crushed and the rest were imported back to Japan in 1998 (these cars were taken by the government) it is almost impossible to see one on the road (except mine I drive it everyday)
Also one more thing value has gone up 7 times what I payed for it

+Christopher Lim Xian Da the 1988 Jdm gsr-s is a car (what you people think) should be saved as it's got a turbo lan evo engine and AWD but hey it looks the same as a trueno and levin (without an iron mask!grille like on a skyline rsx turbo c)because they were not much different plus Corollas were meant to treated like shit and scrapped it was only saved by initial d otherwise nobody would have known about it either as it looks like your typical Jdm hatchback with pop up headlights and the one with fixed ones looks like crap. I only like the trueno because I like pop up headlights otherwise I wouldn't care about it because you can get faster (or similar powered)70s cars with rear wheel drive for cheaper and it would not be wedge shaped(it was an 80s thing) while being lighter.
+never go full Pony that's so true as I recently got rid of my old z3 m roadster as it was shit and a ladies car it had 22s lowered hell I don't care about horsepower it felt slow as hell my cordia barely beat it in a 1/4 mile which was unsurprising as it weighed 946 kilos and I tuned the single carbed engine to 140hp and it has an 8 speed(no shit! It's stock too, it's called a super shift). While the m roadster I got was converted into a 6 speed auto and with all this rice crap giving it an am extra 200kilos in weight (there was more mods I just didn't mention it)

+OriginalBeeTee around me i generally see the E46 going for $11-15k at around 100k miles, and the e36 going for between 6-10 at the same mileage. my friend bought an e46 with 30k miles for $21,000. the same e36 would be around 15k.
I'd buy an E36 since it's better for drifting and I need a car for drifting.

:) I recently bought an E36 328 Sport (Manual)..... on the weekend I saw a guy in an identical Silver P reg all but the rear spoiler of which I do not have.... smiles all round. Whilst there are a lot more 328's around, manuals and ones which have not been abused to death are getting rare....

Older cars often give you a better driver experience as there are less electronic Aids and are lighter. I have a Clio sport 172 and it virtually has no aids at all and is really light, admitted its as reliable as something which is not very reliable. I would guess everyone who watches this video loves cars and would love some advice and not sure where else or how to reach out to them (sorry carthrottle) but would people give me some feedback on my channel, put some comments on my channel trailer. In the States, it's often better to get the 328i rather than the M3. Since it's far cheaper in certain areas, and the power difference isn't too much of a problem. Plus you can get M3 trim pieces and suspension components.
