- In this video, we dive into the world of the BMW E36 M3, which is a '90s classic. Watch Kennan go through the facts and figures of this E36 M3.
This E36 is equipped with the desirable 5-speed manual transmission, and its odometer displays about 73,800 miles.
This M3 cost $51,685 new. Factory equipment includes 17-inch M-Contour II wheels, a limited-slip differential, a power-operated soft top, a factory hard top, heated exterior door locks, heated and power-adjustable front sport seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Modifications include a Dinan Stage 3 tune, a Dinan cold-air intake system, a Dinan exhaust system, a Turner Motorsport front splitter, and Alcantara and M-Tech cloth upholstery.
BMW introduced the E36-generation M3 as a coupe for 1995, and it expanded the range with a sedan and a convertible in 1997 and 1998, respectively. The model was bigger than its predecessor, the original E30-based model, but it remained quick and engaging to drive so demand quickly ballooned. 11,793 units of the M3 coupe were sold in America from 1996 to 1999, according to BMW's archives department.
Power comes from a 3.2-liter straight-6, rated at 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque when left stock. The modifications could increase those figures, but a dyno sheet is not available. Called S52 internally, the engine spins the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.

Nice. He's transitioning from being doug to being himself. Keep up the good work man
That's the plan!
You stole my comment. I was about to say that 😂
@@carsandbidstime to have your own wardrobe style too. T shirt and shorts are Doug’s trait. Lol.
Good point and thankfully. (:
I appreciate that Kennen is detailed without being condescending. That's a very difficult line to walk for something like this, imo.
@bretts1646 are you Kennan’s twin brother?
When you're truly enthusiastic by something it helps.
@@jtreut nope haha
Significantly prefer this intro to Kennan trying to do "THISSSS..."
All the technical stuff we don’t normally see from Doug (Ik Ik it’s not his style) is so well done and easy to understand. Can’t wait to see more of these.
Really enjoying Kennan's solo reviews, thank you, keep it up!
Glad you like them!
@@carsandbids no worries - it now means an extra car review to watch each week that's complimentary to Doug's, happy days!
I love Kennan. With the wealth of knowledge he has, he is very calm and explains in a detailed well put manner. Nice work Kennan!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love seeing Kennan develop his own style. You're a good presenter keep it up!
More to come!
Slow car fast is how I used to drive my mom's Saab 900. Didn't have the turbo, but it was still fun. Made it past 150K miles on the original clutch and was in good mechanical condition until it rusted apart after 37 years. RSVP the Saab.
I’ve always loved the e36 m3. My favorite
As an owner of one with over 250k miles and in my care for the past 12 years these cars are amazing.
Agreed!
do you have the US 240hp one or the 321hp one?
And now it’s something I may never be able to afford…
@@PaulTC777a euro version at 250k miles? Lol. How many rod bearing changes would it need…
@@PaulTC777 US Spec 240hp 3.2l
There you Kennan! This is what we mean! This was a fantastic video. You get more into the technical side of things without losing interest. You knocked it out of the park & I learned a few things about the E36 M3. I think you taking the car from a historical perspective is great, Doug touches on it but doesn't always go into deeper detail which you did here really well. Keep it up!
For the longest time I was never a fan of the E36. However with the downturn of the automotive industry in general, and the pathetic lack of any imagination in terms of driver focus and design, I have really come around. Great review Kennan.✌🏻🇺🇸
Every time I've driven an e36 M3 I left with a smile.
There's nothing wrong with that engine or the gearing. I'd get one of these in a sedan over an e30 or e46. I hope these cars stay reasonable and I may get a second car.
Doug has reviews one before, but that was a coupe. This one is a convertible.
Between Doug and Kennan you should have a fairly complete picture of the E36.
@carsandbids You have yet to review an E36 Compact if memory serves me correctly.
Fantastic video as always! I really like Kennan getting more and more into his own style. Love the technical details and history, and the VANOS part was very well explained. Great work!
Kenan is a chill dude
I love that Kennan has a (not new) E36 t-shirt
You were so much more natural in this one. It's great seeing you find your style! I really enjoyed this one!
Yes! Thank you!
To add on to the differential note at 11:50, the US spec got a 3.23 188mm lsd while the Euro spec evos had 3.15 210mm lsd. While 3.15 is still quite quick, it doesnt have that short ratio that the 3.23 feels. You row threw the gears more often, but it gives the US cars a greater sense of torque and athleticism. Its fun to row into 2-3-4 around the canyons.
Good work Kennan! I like the 15 min videos.
Good job. Enjoy watching your reviews.
Glad you like them!
2:35 With a license plate saying "HVY LTW", i see "heavy lightweight".
EDIT: btw, i like the angles you use, i've always thought that Doug's static profile shots and rare angled shots were a missed opportunity to present the car properly, but i also rarely commented on it.
But now that i notice the front-side view while you're presenting, i can also focus on more parts of the car while listening, plus i just love a good angle shot.
That is what he was going for.
@@carsandbids Ah yeah, seemed most obvious, but i wasn't sure if he wanted to be funny :)
Very cool car,
Very cool vid!
Glad you liked it
Good job Kennan, being yourself, hitting the technical and historical aspects a bit harder, all good!!
beautiful. this was the m3 of my youth
As others have said, Kennan just needed his own style of how he carries himself as well as how he presented the info - this video is proof. Great job guys!
Every time I think I’m getting fat, I watch Kennan and feel better about myself
im glad you touched on the us motor being more reliable. In reality they are about the same in terms of speed.
Umm I’m sorry but no, they’re not
About the same in speed 😒
Quite watchable. The only thing missing is Doug-style jokes.😊
Facts and figures!
Picked up a minty coupe a month ago it’s so dope
I’m thinking of buying the 2011-2013 335IS hard top convertible N54 engine. 7 speed dual clutch. What are your thoughts on that vehicle? Would you recommend it?
Kennan is killing it with the details. I didn't get why people appreciated these things from Doug's reviews. I understand it a bit better now. I would love to hear more about why the manufacturer made changes from one generation to another.
God those BMW straight sixes from that era sound delicious.
E39source fan OG
Bro is as exciting as a new toaster
Sorry but he isn't that exciting
This would have been a great item for Eric Keller at EAG.
Sadly, he passed away in an accident.
So, Kennan, thanks for doing this car justice. Well done!
Amaaing cars. Period . Always well loved by magazines and owners.
Kennan is great! Keep him around and pay him more.
Cool car 🚗 😎 and it's full of nostalgia
Quirks and features
Facts and figures 😂 👍
Kennan might be a good solution for Cars and Bids. Doug is getting posher and more focused on iPads on dashboards than driving experience. We all know how much he adores any Tesla product, but Kennan is fresh and different. A real car guy!!
The Black Bay GMT was a perfect pairing for this car 😉
I have a friend who owned one of these, the full fat 3.2 300+ hp version. Maybe his was running poorly but I've never driven a "fast" car that felt so slow from the drivers seat.
It got comprehensively spanked in a 2nd gear pull by my 02 turbo forester running 250hp atw
Where did you get that shirt!?
Nice review, Kennan! Glad to see you loosen up! Seems like you're having more fun too!
goodness!!
Great job on the video, Kennen! It is an impressive M-car, especially as a coupé. Thanks for the video.
Is this a lightweight? Or is painted like one?
Not an LTW, just has some of the graphics from an LTW.
I was going to ask the same thing. Most of the LTWs were built as coupes though.
cool video, kennan is a great host
Thanks!
I'm a simple man. I see an E36 and I always click. Nice review.
As a mechanically minded enthusiast, Kennan’s mechanical details are awesome. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! 👍
Great video kennan
Thanks!
How did you guys merged the two channels? This seems to contains videos I saw on both cars and bids and More doug. Great video, I love geeky facts. Do people really like those Dinan modifications?
Dinan is one of the best in the BMW modifications world.
Great job Kennzoil!! 👍🏻🇺🇸
I like that Techno Violet shirt!
Nice job Kennan! This seems like the perfect car for you to do a solo review on and add your on style to the video. As a long time viewer I'm happy to see the channel is in good hands with some changes.
great job kennan!
Hi Kennan!
Hi! - Not Kennan, but he is polite and would say hello back.
Let’s go
A winning car.
Great job 👏🏼👏🏼
First time I've seen one of you solo flights. GREAT job! Would watch again. Congratulations
Thank you, thank you!
I have an E36 318is myself. Got it for free, since it had a smashed window.
This generation of 3 series was the best looking sedan body ever made. It's all downhill from there.
Did Doug write your script for you? That'd be funny.
I can never find one for sale sadly
This one is for sale :)
Brilliant video Kennan!
Thanks!
GOOD JOB KENNEN! NUMBERS!!
Kennan is all about facts and figures, if you could get a PhD in BMW, he would!
Love how you go more in detail with some of the technical details, that was something I always missed from Doug's reviews.
perfect vid !
Isn’t that colorway the M3 lightweight? Or is that a copy?
Great review, Kennan!
Black Bay GMT, huh. I have a Black Bay too 😁👍
I’ve been rocking with you since day1 Kennan, keep up the good work!
You rock!
Love the history lesson, Kennan. Keep up the great work! Idea: tour of the Marconi museum in OC? The have a Cizeta!
This is beautiful! I am so glad to thoroughly enjoy you sharing a good amount of your knowledge into something as fun as this vehicle!
I am exited to see more videos from you and Alanis!
Thank you so much!
We want Doug back!!!!!!!!
Doug is Tues/Thurs on his main channel. This will be a variety of people and friends of Doug. We want to showcase cool cars that Doug has already done, or logistically can't do.
I'm really impressed with this video, amazing work Kennan! As an engineer it's very entertaining to get the systems explained more in depth, keep it up 🎉
Awesome, thank you!
I love how you are developing your own style. Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Great review and fantastic E36.
The Rick Steve's of BMWs and Ferraris
Keenan, this was a great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have one ,convertible. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of the automatic "roll bars" that are supposed to come up if the car leaves the road? A car this old and the way people drive these days it's the reason I'm thinking of selling.
I'm crabby and I want my M-cars with steel lids. I struggle with the idea of putting that much suspension kit into a car and then sawing the roof off.
I remember seeing the new 3 series back then in Charlie Sheen’s movie The Chase. Too bad it wasn’t an M3.
Great review from a great BMW enthusiast
Thanks! 👍
I love Kennan's style...thanks for doing a great job I like the history lessons.
Our pleasure!
Take my kidney!
THIS… is the way to use Kennan. I’ll take all of this you’ve got.
Great video. As an E36 M3/4/5 owner I must also add a few pieces of E36 lore that some may know, but many may not. 1) the famous Car and Driver test naming the E36 M3 as the best handling car in America for any price, and 2) the E36 M3 being the fastest sedan in America until the E39 M5 came out.
9 year owner and love mine.
Thanks for sharing!
When do we get a Kennan score?
Cool ❤️
love to see Kennan’s videos!
We are going to need Kennan to stuff himself into small backseats.
More appreciated the S52 than the S50B32? Maybe in the US... Here in europe, The imported US M3 E36 (there are a few), are way less appreciated than the S50B30 (286hp) or the S50B32 (321hp).
BOO where's Doug!?!??! 🤬😡🤬
YAY IT'S KENNAN!!!! 🎊 🎉🍾
Fewer issues. Not less issues.
I stopped watching Cletus McFarland yrs. ago when he started putting his girlfriend on his channel regularly. At that time, my argument was I was a subscriber to Cletus McFarland, not Clitoris McFarland. I still stand by that, haven't watched his shit ever since. I will do the same to you Doug. I signed up for you, you are who I want to see review cars. I don't mind any of the guests in your garage, but they shouldn't be doing your reviews. I WILL bail on you, there is a ton of other content out there!
The Cars & Bids channel will be a mix of reviewers. Doug's main channel isn't going anywhere. We are just adding more content and different ways to talk about cars, which we all like. Doug will be on this channel more often soon.
good work Kennan!
