  • The Puukko knife a step by step build series on making a Nordic Puukko knife from scratch! Follow along as we create a fantastic nordic bushcraft knife. This episode focuses on making the nordic knife blade. The finnish puukko knife is a timeless design that really is a great knife in the woods and best of all it is probably one of the easiest hidden tang knives to make! This is a four part series, Pt.1 Profiling and grinding the blade , Pt.2 Claying the blade to create the hamon, heat treating methods and creating the guard. Pt.3 Making the handle out of fossilized mammoth tusk and sonoran ironwood. Pt.4 making the iconic Puukko knife sheath, a wooden scabbard made from spalted maple with a leather cuff lined with fur! If you intend to build this and you encounter any problems feel free to ask me any question you want! The comment section could stand to see some more use! In fact if you have any suggestions for me also leave those in the comments! I am here for you! Thank you for spending your time with me and watching my knife making videos.

    I learned a while back that splitting some of the builds into series definitely helped with both the amount of knowledge that I could impart on people and decrease the amount of stress to hit a certain point every single day to be able to release a video. People don't really understand how much work goes into making an entire knife in a week when you add in the recording, camera angles, editing, and so on. I've been thinking about making on of these knives as well, I'm looking forward to seeing how yours comes out.

      Yeah I followed you when you did your daily Vlog your 1 month daily vlog. That looked extremely difficult and I still have no idea how you were able to film edit create and launch content daily! I've just been trying to get at least one upload out a week for the last year. The problem I found is to create good content with value for The Watcher. I really do enjoy your channel and I would love to work with you sometime in the future!

    Excellent! You have a natural teaching talent. Pleasant, relaxed demeanor and voice. I can tell you learned, made mistakes, had questions and now you explain easily what to do and not do. Loved the part on drill bit. You are the first I have heard state the drill bit should be slightly smaller than blade thickness to establish blade cutting edge. Thank you for passing your talent along to me and others who don't want to go in business but just use the tools we have to make a nice looking knife. I am looking forward the remaining instructions. Looks good! I’ve never done a puukko before so question.. you did the bevel right to the tang with no ricasso. If you put a guard/bolster, how do avoid a gap where the bevel is? Perhaps you’ll cover this on the next video. 😉

    Gona be a nice build Aaron. Lookin forward to seeing how the hamon turns out. But do yourself a favour, dont turn your extractor on when your grinding, those sparks will eventualy cause a blow up. Ive seen it a few times. Wood dust will be in that pipe and with the added airflow its just a time bomb waiting to go off. It only takes one spark at the right moment.

    The belt grinder remove excess metal so fast

  • @jumpnjack8686
    @jumpnjack8686 3 года назад +1

    Airin, I have a question about rough belt grinding. It is easy for me to pull the blade along the straight level part of the blade. I encounter problems when the blade begins to curve toward the tip. I can see you pull the handle toward yourself which moves the blade edge in toward the belt. It causes me to get into the line on the cutting edge. Maybe you could spend some time in one of your upcoming videos showing and explaining what you do to adjust the grind in this area. Hope this makes sense.

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  3 года назад

      It does make sense for sure! The way I do it actually goes against what I was taught! I adapted my own way of grinding through trial and error and personal preference. I will do a video on it and try to explain why I do the motions that I do in more detail

      I literally spent 3 hours hand sanding yesterday! I should have spent more time at the belt sander but my blade was already thin when I started to sand! I didn't want to grind any more off! However, it worked and this weekends video is going to be awesome!

      yes and faster if you ask me! I buy my belts for around $5 US for the 36 grit zirconium belt. I can get several knives out of each belt. I have tried the band saw but prefer to grind if there isn't a ton of extra material!
