Making a Puukko

- One of my most popular knives is the Scandanavian style Puukko. My design is contemporary rather than traditional. I use 75CR1 steel that I have laser cut from 4mm sheets. Each blade is fully hardened and tempered individually, before grinding. The finish on this blade is a fire scale finish with an A30 bevel finish. I don't polish the bevels because the method of sharpening these blades will quickly undo any efforts at a satin finish.
The handle is from Camphor burl with a stabilised maple burl spacer. I use a poly fibre board and brass shim stock for spacers. The guard is hydro cut from brass to save time and wasteage. When the handle is done at a 1200 finish (Old 600 belt) I soak the wood in boiled linseed oil over night. After that you can use any number of wood sealers to finish it.
This model sells for US$285 from me or from Blade Gallery. Comes with a swinger sheath which I will make in another video. Material also varies from blade to blade.
THIS KNIFE IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AT BLADEGALLERY.COM

Real beauty! I am launching a puukko knife build video series and was researching other vids out there and came across this one! Great work man!
I love reading every ones comments! I guess every one is a knife maker and knows best when it comes to youtube
Молодца! Залитые руки! Уважение тебе! Хотелось бы такой нож тоже иметь для охоты!
Nice job bravo! Just one criticism. .. music
???? U r against RN'R
………Oh Man- in the First Moment I found the Musik so terrible -. I am 78 year old . When the wonderful Video was finished my 82 years old brother and me danced through his blacksmith Workshop and klicked with two Hammers on the AMBOSS hey man, now. We are young again
Bravo- Go on Go on ……- My brother is dancing on the table.
Agreed
It’s like a copy of every AC/DC song combined into one, without the lyrics on an endless loop. Great guitar rock but I would have preferred the sound of the machines and some narration. Beautiful knife though.
Puukko is not scandinavian. It's Finnish. Which is not a part of Scandinavia :) Hyvä puukko kuitenkin!
Now I know. Thank you
👍👍👍👍👍
много деревяшек)
Yup that's a Finnish style knife all right, also "puukko" means knife in finnish :P
Knife knife
Вот это нож.Работяга, не пижон... )))
It looks that he is making norway knife, not puukko.Puukko is tradional work-tool,hundred years old , in Finland and mode and type much difrent.
I wish you would have went through the steps and talk to us while you did what you did is there a video I can watch with you explaining things better because that's a cool knife
You built that nice you could probably make five or six of them a day that's killer Bubba I mean that's straight to the point the video and all that's a killer knife dude really good at that I can tell
Your not wrong. I'll get my videos better in the future
*I want buy knife, ans me know!*
Beautiful wood, sharp as f*ck good to see a video. Have a great and profitable 2020's
Now that is very cool! The perfect use of a tool box imo.. storing some beautiful wood! B
haha yeah, knife makers have different priorities. I got hooked on your channel last night.
0:18 отличная кучка клинков!!! позавидывать можно!!!)))
Очень наглядно. Красавец ножиг получился 👍👍👍
A thumbs up for the video. A thumbs up for the great knife..and a thumbs up for the Tolkien tattoo :¬)
Nice video. But i prefer seeing it without music
Mute it then..
Where are you from sir coz iam also blacksmith from Nepal and I worked silver jewelry but now nothing
I saw many knife making BUT, your is so simple and with love. On the end, results is amazing. All the best...
Nice puukko, but the music was not neccessary.
I put it on mute.
*Приятно смотреть когда человек так работает руками , молодец!*
Great looking knife!
What did you soak the handle in?
Boiled linseed oil
I prefer traditional rat tail tangs on puukko style knifes which go through the handle and is locked to brass plate.
It's more durable and look's better.
Отличная работа!
This belly works as stabilizer no need extra tool :)
That`s scandi, not puukko. Puukko hasn`t ricasso, and the bevel is higher than half the blade!
Those drawers of wood, my heart skipped a few beats
Nice job, what is the liquid that you use for the handle ?
I'd bet my money on boiled linseed oil or something similar.
Lavoro fantastico, io mi cimento a restaurare e fare coltelli ma non ho un posto adatto dove potere fare rumore.. 😅
Awesome knife, what speed are you running that grinder at with the 320 grit
lower the grit the lower the speed. around 200 rpm slower with finer belts. I find it prevents the belt grinding too much and leaving deep marks.
Great handle work..still think after 20 years makeing that is the hardest part.never did a stick tang knife....was the teak oil ???
thanks for watching. It was Boiled Linseed oil
Nice one. I was given a hand forged puukko as a gift - it's my favourite blade so far but yours has nicer handle for sure.
видео называется а я крутой перец
Запасливый мужчина.
На любой вкус и цвет.
The music spoilt this video for me it would have been better with a commentary.
That is perfect and most beautiful puukko, what you can make! I know, bacause I use puukko everyday there in Lapland. Great job!
I have ancestors from Sapmi.
I liked the viewing the steps that it took to build your product. They probably don't make a 1200 grit belt but it Look's Awesome! thx
Yeah it's not. It's an old 600 that is smooth like paper feels like a 1200.
Мастер отменный видно сразу!
Really sweet knife. Love it.
Hell yeah. If you don't have a nice puukko you aren't a man.
If you get a puukko as a gift then you know that person really appreciates you.
Precise workmanship. Congratulation :)
Absolutely no need for the ridiculous music. A commentary would have been much more appropriate. Unwatchable.
couldn't agree more. 😁
Wow, time for bed grandma.
There is a double U in puukko, maybe hat way People find your Video better . Nice work
will fix thanks
классный нож получился.
Amazing. You make it look easy but I know it is very hard because it needs skills and experience.
Very beautiful knife! What material did you use above and below the thin brass plate?
g10 liners
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives Thanks!
This band is awesome. I hope they play that song again.
🤣
I am sure this was an informative video, but the dopey music was a huge put off.
I am aware. Working on it. Thanks for watching
lol , its a wee bit loud is all .. makes you jump a little if you have your volume up .. don't sweat it .
Красотень. Молодец
Really enjoyed the video! Thanks for posting.
That is not a puukko! The real puukko comes from Finland and has the blade sharpened all the way to the bolster. It is a tool also used for fine wood work and specially exact carving not possible with your type of blade.
The Norse make knives in the style shown here.
exelente trabajo muchas felicidades un fuerte abrazo !!!!!!!!
Отличная работа!!! Красиво и гармонично сочетаются цвета и фактура материалов!
The most beautiful video is best explained that I've ever seen in my life, well explained so one who gets an idea of how a knife handle is made which I still haven't managed to do well.
I'm jelous of your collection of materials, also amazing control when you where grinding, that takes some time to get such good control, well done
Гарно, молодець дядько:-)))
Loved the video. As some one who makes a few knives himself, I always enjoy watching when other people share their know how and ideas. Glad I found this.
Good job, but this not puukko
Why can't I double like a video 😏
Все хорошо. Но то что плечи клинка не садятся в больстер, а остаются с наружи - это не есть гуд.
That grinder is a beast!
Hi!
Can you tell me what is that substance where you swim the knife handle for 10 hours "Chinese wood oil" or something else???
boiled linseed oil
Nice looking knife. Wouldn't be preferable though to secure the handle with a small brass pin?
the epoxy I ise is very strong. I have tested it to destruction. However, yes, a pin is always good.
Stu, how do you avoid getting the ol' knifemaker's lung? I usually see you without respiration, and I'm wondering if you're doing something to make yourself comfortable... that I'm not doing.
I have a big fan that blows the majority of dust and crap out of the shop. Also put my grinder by the workshop opening. But you are correct. I should be wearing ppe
Amazing , just wish I could afford one for my grand son
А главное, молча. Без лишних слов! Молодец.
The handles beautiful, is it slippery in hand?
Ditch the music awesome looking knife.
...у, колбасник!, якута научился делать, молорик!!!
😍👍🏻
For sale ?
Perkele! Hieno puukko. Greetings from Finland. Suomi Perkele.
Hiukan liikaa kahvassa taivutusta suomalaiseksi puukoksi, suomalainen puukko suora kahvaisempi
Convex man belly works great for grinding a good edge 😁 I speak from experience .
Dude you have a serious stock of premium wood .... I just look for odd woods locally or in my back yard LOL. I love wild plum tree wood but its the most difficult stuff to get a good square from.
I love the purple and yellow blend makes such a pretty handle but man its a lot of work . I live in a 4plex so I have my Buck Tools 4×36 sander and other small tools to work with .....Your shop and wood stash is awesome bro , beautiful work.
beautiful work man!
beauty 👌
Ножи збс.Музыка напрягает.
Слишком много музыки...дизеля тебе.
Stunning work as always. May I ask, what belts are those at 9:43? (Brand). Thanks in advance!
Klingspor i think
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives awesome thanks.
Vaya joya maestra
What was the liquid you set the knife in for 10 hours? I am new to knife making and I love these knives. I visited Finland and purchased a couple of these types of knives and I love these. Great video...
boiled linseed oil
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives Have you ever tried a combination of Boiled Linseed Oil, Pine Tar and Turpentine? I loved how the handle looked, i want to try what you did
He sharpens the handle entirely by machine and takes an existing blade for sharpening, not forging. it is not manual. The craft is reddening the steel, using a hammer to shape it, quenching and using another knife to cut the handle and sharpen the handle by hand with sandpaper and hewn by knife.
You are entirely correct. This is a semi custom production puukko. I have the blades laser cut so they are all the same. I do my own grinding and heat treatment, along with the handle construction. I do make hand forged puukkos with hand finished handles, but i charge more for them. This method lets me keep the costs down. It is still a solid performing knife.
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives honestly, the knife you made is very nice and meticulous.
Very nice puukko. Seen a lot of those in my neighboring country Finland. Often they use tree bark in the handle. Maybe you should try it sometime just to get a different feel and look to it. Really liked your videos and subscribed. 👍👍👍
Using birch bark as a handle is extremely traditional way to make the handle
Couple days ago i found traditional Tommi puukko from a forest when we were picking lingonberries.
I just had to grind the rusts off the blade, clean the sheath and make a new handle.
It was my first time to use birchbark as a handle material and it feels a lot better in a hand than wood.
More soft and grippy.
I prefer traditional rat tail tangs on puukko style knifes which go through the handle and is locked to brass plate.
Looks better and is more durable.
Top demais 😍
Красава👍👍👍
Да вот этот явно покруче будет, просто если круче это уже переворот!!! ruclips.net/video/7SGna1aY6EI/видео.html
The final result is really gorgeous. That's a masterpiece!
Keep up the fine work!
👍🏻
That was amazing to watch!
Very classy and beautiful
Excelent job,,,,,,,,,, your finnes pukko knife is a real fine art,,,,,, congratulations sir,,,,,,,,, greating from Perú 🇵🇪👍,,,,,,
Мастер!!!Больше слов не надо!
a great knife but 1 more thing to add to the "finnish" style is a birch bark handle. Great video tho and greetings from finland
Sadly birch bark is not readily available in south africa
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives thats understandable tree types vary alot from place to place
Magnifique 👍 quel bois as tu utilisé ?
Sweet Jeebus!!! That handle wood! Like liquid buttery caramel goodness! Don't even want to know the $ tied up in those drawers full of scales. Thanks for the vid!
Muy buen trabajo, el cuchillo espectacular !!!!!
Y la música 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
ПУК
Very very nice!
No pin?
Epoxy I use is pretty strong. Also I serrated the tang for more purchase. They dont come off.
Music gets a bit much. Very good knife, though.
I agree, Hind sight is 20/20
I love it. So funny when it stops and then starts again :D
heh pretty nice, remember making my own puukko in junior high school (which was a mandatory subject for us) but i sadly lost it somewhere during the years.
Maybe i will make a new one some day :D
As a Finn it is my obligation to mention that this is not a true Finnish Puukko tho but some Scandinavian style knife :D
Fantastic Video Stuart! Super Helpful and informative even though you didn't say a word! Thank you!
does 75Cr1 steel need soak time before quenching in oil ?
After normalising I usually soak about 5 min before the quench. Seems to give me good results each time.
@@StuartSmithHandForgedKNives Alright thanks man !
