Knife making - Large Puukko

  • A friend of mine ordered me to make him a big puukko in the 1930 puukko style. I took some inspiration from Pekka Tuominen and some historical examples. For the blade I used old metal file , forged it to shape as close as possible.

The "original" Bowie Knife " was made from an old file /rasp, (depending on your interpretation of the history.),, so the first minutes of the video, are great to watch, (as a massive Bowie fan),,,,
    Beautiful knife btw,,

you just have to make the sheath to end a little bit after the thickest part of the handle and you need to put the right amount of plastic foil when it dries :D

Beautiful work. Here in finland some call these long puukkos jääkäripuukkos. It means something like jaeger knife in germany jaeger means hunter or infantryman, but finnish jääkäri just infantry man. I guess soldiers liked bit bigger blades to typical puukkos during war.

Wow! Excellent work. I made a sheath similar to that (not nearly as nice though) a few years ago. I used cedar planks for salmon (unused) and thin veneer for a cigar box to make the spacer for the blade. Then I wrapped it in leather. Between the leather, cedar and cigar, the sheath smells great!

Interesting to only see sanding tools used in the rough shaping of the handle. I normally use rasp, file and plane for coarse work.
What kind of wood did you use for the sheath? It looks weirdly soft and flexible.
