  • The puukko knife is getting a mammoth ivory and ironwood handle! I go over how to construct the mammoth knife handle on the puukko and talk about the qualities of mammoth ivory and desert ironwood. Both materials are unique to work with for different reasons. Mammoth ivory sure does stink, but I couldn't tell if it was worse than the smell of the ironwood! This is a mammoth knife handle at it's best! In the mammoth puukko knife build Pt.3 we finish the knife and move into Pt.4 where we will make the scabbard, probably the coolest part of the build yet! I love working with woolly mammoth tusks and teeth! What an amazing and exotic material to get to play with, and best off all the woolly mammoth died of natural causes so we don't have to worry about poaching for the mammoth tusk ivory!

To prevent chip out on the tusk during drilling, epoxy a piece of sacrificial scrap steel to the tusk or use the back to back layered painters tape method. This will prevent your drill from putting lateral pressure on the tusk, plus creates sort of “hold down or clamping/backing pressure” to prevent chip out. After drilling remove the steel and clean up with acetone.
