    The spring steel is hard to move because it's still hardened. You're literally fighting the hardness of the steel.
    Quick tip: any hardened steel you want to hammer, and hammer easily, heat it to forging/forge welding temperature, then let it cool down naturally. This removes the temperature in the steel, and makes it way easier to work. And when you go back to heat treat it, it becomes just as hard if not really close to as hard as before forging.

      Good tip. Spring steel will be especially hard to work with without normalising since it's meant to be springy and return to it's original form. Doing a few normalising cycles of all the steel should soften it up quite a bit.

    • @CascadePSA
      @CascadePSA 4 года назад +20

      I found this on a forum about forging using leaf spring steel:
      “One thing you have to know about leafsprings, particularly heavy loaded ones from cars/trucks, is that they suffer from metal fatigue. Metal fatigue is basically cracks forming, starting at the edges, holes etc. These start as tiny hairline cracks as soon as the springs start being used, and slowly grow throughout the use. Normally they should stay quite small, but there may be more significant cracks in there. Now if you forge, these can open up.
      Also, how hot are you forging? If you forge too cold, then you can get cracks. The worst thing you can do is straighten a piece out just before putting it back in the forge. On the other hand, if you keep the steel very hot for a long time, you get grain growth. This makes the steel more prone to cracking during forging, in particular the if you do the former.
      Annealing twice sounds insufficient. You need to go through at least 3 normalizing cycles. Break one of the cracked blades, and it can tell you a lot. What does the grain look like? And what does it look like at the crack? Is it significantly more coarse there, and/or oxidized? Then the crack was was in there before you annealed and quenched.”

    Dan crafting is a very complex art form, I'm impressed you got such a good one. My first attempt I got a naD. naD's are useless, unlike Dans.
    Feel free to use this as a quick reference to Dan crafting (Note: I'm not a professional Dan Crafter, but I have researched a lot of it online and made a few myself)
    -Camouflage clothing will make your Dan sneakier. But if you put anything Mossy Oak branded in there you'll get a Truck Nut Dan, who's favorite hobby is mudding.
    -A denim Jacket grants Dan hipster power in proportion to the fade, wear, and holes present in the jacket. Adding round wire rim glasses triples the hipster content of your Dan.
    -Subbing the DnD or Cthulu books will simply change the focus of his nerdiness.
    -You can also use nonfiction books to make the Nerdy focus on a practical skill set. One Dan, I used the Reader's Digest _Fix-It Yourself Manual_ and now I have a Handy-Dan.
    -Swapping the Star Wars iconography for Star Trek is discouraged, as Star Trek Dan will go on tangents as to why Star Trek is superior to Star Wars.
    Whatever you do, do not use a CoD disk for your gamer element and use Monster for the liquid whilst Dan crafting. This makes a Kyle, who's sole purpose is gaming, collecting Monster paraphernalia, and assaulting their natural enemy: *Drywall*
    *Edit* Yes, you can sub out the Sabaton for something else heavy metal (Falconer, Glory Hammer, etc), but any other genre can lead to traits some would consider undesirable such as heavy tobacco consumption (country/western), a Starbucks infatuation (Pop), or becoming a chilled out stoner (Reggae). I have heard of people using 2 tone or third wave Ska to get a chill Dan without the weed problem, but I've never seen it first hand. Granted, you're making your own Dan, so you may not mind these side effects.
    *Edit2* NO, you absolutely CANNOT substitute the Yellow for another color. The Danonomicon is VERY clear about this.

      I've tried my hand a few times, and gotten really mixed results. No complete duds, but haven't really gotten the intended outcome either. However, along the way I've made a few discoveries.
      -A bit of beef jerky can make the Dan stronger. Slim Jims & their ilk do not work for this, it has to be jerky. Slim Jims don't react at all, and just get dumped out alongside the Dan at the end.
      -Empty brass can be considered 'yellow' for this, and occasionally unlocks the 'Guns' skill without skill points. It is still to be determined if the caliber matters.
      -Grunge or hard rock seems to be more or less interchangeable with Sabaton. (Godsmack & Disturbed have given good results.)
      -From experimentation, sci-fi in general works, Star Trek specifically doesn't. A Halo disc worked well, that Dan was almost a head taller than the rest.
      -I've thrown in a Popular Mechanics & an automotive magazine, and that was a bit of a mistake. Nothing was safe from the tinkering once he found the tools.
      Further investigation is required, and the process can surely be improved.

    • @JafenKtair
      @JafenKtair Год назад

      @Alexander Parra yes it should be fine as long as you put in two items instead of one sabaton t shirt. Little tip also you need less water in this one and if you put too much water in it will result in a naD, which really no one wants.

    That curving near the hilt is pretty natural with Bowie's, you could actually push it back slightly further (couple mm) to enhance the shape of it. It makes it a bit nicer to slice with and also is good for cutting wet rope as it won't start sliding about. Also you can use the difference to lacerate meat/whatever without actually slicing the whole way through, this is great for pork belly BBQs

    I’m so glad he has gotten better and back on his feet it makes me feel horrible when someone is working so hard for something that they deserve and everything seams to go wrong. It’s a great day when someone can get back up to fight another day. No matter the situation.

    From what rookie smithing I did back in high school, I’d recommend making a few smithing tongs with some nice long handles. Once I switched from like vice grips, there was no going back.

    Hey Eli. Good tip for cracking bolts like with the leaf springs. Instead of pulling the socket up, turn it around so it's going to rotate down and then stand on it. You can put a lot more force into it and you won't kill your back yanking it up

    Keep it up brother we learn through trial and error! I’m at the beginning stages of opening my studio which is mixed media and I understand the challenges as well as the frustration! But I believe in you and I believe in myself and I’m sure we both have people who believe in us! It feels worth it when we see the fruits of our labor. ✌️ 💪🎯

    Since leaf springs take the majority of the bouncing from driving around, they end up with a ton of built up stress over the years. If you get them up to forging temps and then submerge them in some fine sand (like paving sand) until they’re not glowing anymore (at least three times) the steel will be much easier to move. Learned it in my metallurgy class last semester.

  • @cptdumplin

    You were fighting the temper of the spring steel.
    For future works with spring steel, heat it up to forging temperature, then let it naturally cool down.
    That process is called normalization, and removes the structural tension that hardens the steel in the first place.
    Makes it easier to work with.
