Hmm. On the one hand I really appreciate this video. On the other, once you have the headphones disassembled, the lighting is so blown out, and the view is so zoomed out, that it's actually quite hard to see what you're talking about. Hope the feedback is helpful.
Yes, I was hoping if you had a pair you were modding you could have a good look your self but next time I do one of these I will try to get some macro shots as well
I've just ordered one of the cables from your website and you've just saved me a fortune from buying it elsewhere - and I'm always happier to support a smaller business like yourself. I'm sure I'll be watching this video again when the cable arrives. Thanks so much!
Lol - yes we sell them cheap as when we mod them we normally replace the original cable with something fancier so we end up with loads of spares. That way we make a few quid extra by selling them separately and people can get the cables half price ... Win Win
@@CustomCans Hi. Beyerdynamic offer a 3 m and a 1.6 m version of the straight cable you show in the video. The 3m version has the dt 990 pros included in the list as suitable, whereas only the dt 770 pro 32 Ohm LE are listed as suitable for the 1.6m cable. Is there a an actual difference between the 2 cables or did BD simply forget to do a comprehensive suitability list for the 1.6m? I prefer the 1.6 meter cos I can use extensions if and when I need more reach, but am worried there might be a genuine reason 1.6m won't work properly on my 990 pros. Kind of like the ear pads for the dt 770 pro and the 990 pros aren't the same material and will change the sound if interchanged even though they fit and appear exactly the same... Thanks.
Brilliant video. Nice, simple and explained in plain English. Just ordered myself a straight cable for my DT990's. The coiled/curled cable is so heavy and always gets in the way. Cannot wait to get this little DIY job done next weekend. Thanks!
My top tip would be to take a photo of where the wires go as reference before you remove the old one. I get a lot of people messaging because they got the wires in the wrong order ;)
Manage to get a pair of DT 990 Pro Black Edition headphones from a resale shop for $30. it was a return item because the 3.5mm broke on the end, i guess whoever (amazon?) got it returned, thought it wasn't worth keeping in stock, and so they just sold as broken I guess. Buying a cable today and going to do this fix, this was already helpful as I disassembled the ear cup like that in the video. What a legend!
Sounds like you got a bargain - beyerdynamic charge us around £45 for 1 replacement driver for these so I may have a hunt for a return next time I need a spare one
@@CustomCans Definitley, my heart skipped a beat and my eyes shot wide open when i saw those in the plastic bag on one of the shelves. I didn't notice it at first until my friend I was with handed to me.
Thanks for the video! My cable just started to go out and I was upset till I found this. I'm going to go for a small upgrade with your three pin conversion kit.
Glad I found this fantastic video. Got the new dynamic driver for my DT880pro’s. And it had this new circuity type connectors. My old one had these ”spikes”. Just soldered everything as you did in this video, worked wonderfully. My Dt880pros up and running!
Like you I have a red white and black wire. But on the Video i Cant really See where to put which. Unfortnately i dont have a Multimeter to Check the wires but i guess the black one is the grounded, the red one right and the white one left. Could you tell me with which wire has to Go where ? I cant really find anything on this on the Internet! Thanks
Amazing I came across this, as my pair which I picked up a while ago had a blue + red + copper cable, seems like they've changed the colours of the wires since I bought mine. And also you mentioned the weird way they had it setup, so if I didn't see this video and just went with the quick searches I did on what colours mean what... Yeah anyway thanks a lot for the help.
Thanks - Glad it was helpful. If you are members of forums or groups where this vid would be helpful, please share it - the more views it gets the more money I can throw at making more content
Hey I took the courage and replaced my broken headband cable and the regular cable aswell as it was starting to break at the reinforced point aswell. First I had alot of troubles where only one side worked but then I figured out that supposedly the 2 middle cables of the main ear cup have to be soldered in one connection. After that the headset worked on both sides but this time it was quite noticably louder on the left ear and quieter on the right ear. I dont know what the issue could be, probably another bad or wrong soulder I suppose? Its late now so I will probably try it again tomorrow but since I stopped trying for today I figured I could ask you since youre the pro. What else could be my issue or my fail? Did you ever encounter behaviour like this and if so what was the fix? Thanks alot for these very easy and informative videos about the beyerdynamic universe. Gave me the courage to DIY :D
Without seeing what yo have done, it is tricky to tell what the issue is but it is normally useful to draw the circuit out on paper to get it clear in you head. The outer solder pads are + and - and the centre ones are not connected to the deiver - they are just used to join cables together. Draw the circuit you have out and make sure both sides have a connection to the appropriate positive wire and they both connect to the shared ground. Make sure that the positive and negative wires do not join together.
this video is great thanks! I am just replacing the jack though. the cable has 1 red 1 white and 1 black wires. I have a screw terminal im going to use instead of my terrible soldering skills lol. The new jack has left right and ground. which wire goes to what? is the red now for the left because of how beyerdynamics does it? thanks!!!!
Hey - thanks for the vid. I just fixed my DT990 Pros 250Ohm - replacing the old and broken left driver with a new one from Beyerdynamic - and it worked all out but I feel like the frequency response is quite off. Bass seems very loud, while mids and highs seem like missing a bit. The overall volume is super high - higher than on my other 250Ohm headphones. I referenced the repaired 990 to my 770 and - both 250Ohm - and they are louder and seem to have more bass. Did something like this ever occur to you? Thanks in advance.
Thank you very much for this excellent video. Very accurate and a lot of additional useful information for the job. Got my headphones working again: smashing job, much obliged Sir!
thanks for the amazing tutorial. My cat just ate my new DT990 Pro cable.. ;( I just ordered from you guys a replacement ;) Will try to change it myself.
Hi, I just recently had the end of the aux tip break and don’t know how to replace them. I saw you have a small business but I don’t know if you take repairs, I’m base in the UK so shipping should be simple. Could you let me know if you could help? I believe I just need a new cable just like in this video
Is there risk for the wires touching and interfering with each other? I remember a cable repair guide that instructed to cover the wires with isolating tape and add some glue to hold everything in place.
You can buy them direct from polar audio ( beyer's UK arm ) or keep an eye on our site as we should have a few more listed next week, you just have to be quick and get in there before anyone else snaps them up ;) _ I will try to get Sylvia to list them on monday
Hello, thanks for your videos. The right earphone of BayerDymic dt880 stopped working. I took it to someone to replace the headband cable. He fixed it but now it has a sound with more mids. What is the cause and how do I fix it?
Its some time on. But I have just had my right ear on my DT990 just cut out for no reason. I have no idea why. Is there a common fault you know of at all? I am going to try get them replaced. But would still love to know what the issue could be
I can't seem to find vids on fixing Custom One's.. I have a broken pair that's so costly to send for repair I could just buy all the things and really make it a custom one, thanks for the vids!
@@CustomCans well, the audio jack got yanked out a couple of times and now there is no bass on right cup. I've tried different cables and I believe the issue is the jack itself.
Hey Mate, im not sure you still reading comments on this but Ill try my luck. I just did the fix as you stated and now when i test it only the right speaker has any sound on it. The left + is perfectly soldered on and the damage why i changed it the cable initially was rustling on L and R. Do you have any Idea where this might come from? Im not very fit in electronics..cheers
I suspect you have not wired it correctly. On the drivers, The outer contacts are + and the inner contacts are not connected. Use a multimeter and make sure you have a + and - connected to each driver and no shorts
sorry if this is a stupid question, but If one wanted too have a cable coming out of each earcup and remove the head band cable how would you got about doing this ?
It is not a stupid question but it is possibly one of those ones where if you have to ask, you probably should not attempt it ;) You would have to drill a hole in the right earcup the right size for your cable and then seal up around the headband cable holes and around the cables with something like hot glue. The soldering would be easier though as you would only need to solder 2 wires to each driver. The drilling of the hole is the scary part
Hi custom cans, I cant afford to send these in for a repair so I have ran a continuity test with a fluke voltage tester. The reading gave continuity beeps when testing ground and all the other configurations they are all just on with beep. The positive the right or left they all just beeped with each other in every combination of tests I had one part of metre on the different jack parts as shown in video and the other checking each solder point. My best guess is this means the cable has broke inside the flex part and all wires are just shorting out each other with contact? I was told it was likely a driver failure but I feel its likely the cable. I will now put the driver and headphones in front of my de humidifier to further dry it out.... What do you think this means? Please advise many thanks.
I just tested a brand new guitar cable and it does not beep on any configuration of testing continuity only when it should beep as no damage... unless I got some theory in the wiring wrong It looks like a major broken cable inside and all are shorting in weird and wonderful ways in the left ear. The volume is 25% and no bass in left ear. if this helps.. I was advised the driver has likely failed. Thanks
Hi, continuity can be a bit unreliable on headphones as the wires are all joined through the voice coils on the drivers unless you unsolder the cable first. You can use your meter to check how many ohms you are getting instead - between R+ and ground and between L+ and ground - you should read roughly whatever the impedance of your headphones should be. If you measure a very low resistance then you have a short somewhere internally and a cable replacement should fix it. Jason
@@CustomCans thanks mate for the response, I did measure impedance also on my multi metre, from one of the earphones it gave 255ohms which is in tolerance but I am sure I had a reading also of 1.5ohms and it was gradually dropping on the metre as I held it.... I suppose that explains why I get no bass to the left if that short is there... may have to order a cable from you. ! thanks
ok so i just got my DT 990 pros back from warrenrty repair and I'm PRETTY sure the drivers are in backward. the audio seems to be pushing the correct way when i have the cups on backward but now i got the issue of trying to flip the R & L channles on my damn PC which is all i use them on but i don't know if i should complain and send them back or not the drivers should be on correctly i can't tell at this point the sound is weird when
Hi - it is unlikely L and R will be swapped because of the way the cabling works but one driver may be out of phase. You can use the video below to test them. It will check the left and right and then check phase. If they sound right when the video is out of phase and wrong when it is in phase that that is the issue ruclips.net/video/kUT6ZhFdLkA/видео.html
My pin bent and broke so I bought a fresh cable from your site, but I cannot seem to get the soldering correct despite following the video, the right is the only one that ever works. Is it possible that the speaker is broken on the left? Or am I simply getting the soldering wrong? they worked fine before the jack was bent
If you have a digital multimeter you could put one probe on each of the outer contacts and see if you get roughly the same reading as the impedance of your headphones. Have it set to read ohms and if you have an 80ohm pair it should read close to 80 if you get no reading then it is probably a dead driver. If you get a very low reading, you have bridged a connection somewhere
We had a big bag of them spare and I think they have all sold now so I am not sure we will be re-stocking them. We were selling them off cheap to get rid of them but you can still buy them at full price from beyerdynamic - I think they are around £20
Hello, since my aux plug is deformed, I wanted to replace it. So I bought an replacement aux plug and cut the caple. Now I have the problem, that the kevlar in there makes it impossible for me to find the copper wire of the cables. Ist there any trick to get rid of the kevlar? Or is it only possible to replace the whole cable due to the kevlar?
Yes to does make it tricky - What I normally do is bend the wires over at the tip - the copper strands will stay bent and the kevlar will spring back up, then you can trim the kevlar away with sharp scissors and bend the copper wires straight again
Great videos! I was wondering how it would be for a dt790 headset, is it more complicated to replace its cable with a 1/4 or 3.55mm? Have you any experience with those?
@@CustomCans oh cool! I just saw a comment that as it is a 4 pin xlr, if i replace the cable, it will just be mono, is that correct? Or i can make it stereo
So, I have the three lug type 990 and repaired it temporarily, which I shouldn't have done. What you warned for happened, though not by soldering heat, but by accidentally pulling the cable. Two of the three lugs are now no longer attached. Is this the end of my headphones, or is there hope?
There is hope but not much... If the voice coil wires are still attached you can glue them back into place, if the voice coil wire is broken, there may be enough length left to re-attach it to the base of the lug. If not then it is probably not saveable
Hi there, I was wondering if you had any advice on what to do with my DT990s that appear to be a much older model - they have 4 wires internally, with a brown and white connecting to the right ear, and a yellow and green connecting to the left driver. I have a new replacement cable with 3 red, white, and black wires but am unsure of how to adapt or if this is possible - any ideas?
Yes... The left and right share the same ground so solder the ground wire for the headband cable to the negative terminal in the left driver along with the ground wire from the cable. Then attach the left positive from the cable to the positive terminal on the left driver. Finally join the positive side of the headband cable to the right positive from the cable and then cover the join in electrical tape or shrink tube
I know this is probably not what you want to hear but it is just the same as taking it out only in reverse. Make sure the cable is pushed into hole with some force before you try to get it in. Make sure the clip is the right way round and it should all go back together
There are only really 3 wires. One positive for left one for right and a shared ground . As long as each driver has one positive and one negative connected to the outer tabs you should be fine, you will just need to watch a phase test video to check you don't have one wired the wrong way round.
Custom Cans modded my dt770 about two years back, and made a couple of Litz cables for them. The modding plus the cables adds a huge amount to the way Beyers deliver that music that you know you can't live without. But, watching this,I am amazed that the work can be done for £49!. Its so meticulous. And the result is a fine headphone made even better. I mainly listen to orchestral music :there's usually 60-100 people playing and say 10-15 strands (threads) of sound going on. So,there's a lot to mess up,to obscure,to lose. And the custom Cans modding and Litz cables simply deliver more of what's in the recording and it's a lot more authentic. Revelatory. I'm sending in my 880's to get them fitted with a 4pin mini XLR in the new year. I don't get why CC don't have a lot more UK customers. So,all you RNCM,Chethams,Manchester uni music proffs/students....wake up and smell the coffee : Beyer don't make toys and CC do make Beyers deliver more, and better.
Hello, i replaced the cable on my dt990 ed yesterday, cause my right channel was not working anymore. after soldering the new cable on, i noticed that the quality of the sound is kinda weird and also is the right channel now really quiet. Please , could u help me. i have to know why it is like it is
Yes - it sounds like you wired something wrong or bridged some connections. I would probably look at your wiring and draw the circuit diagram. Make sure that each side has a connection to the ground and to the correct positive wire and that the positive is not joined to the ground without going through a driver. You could use a multimeter to measure the resistance of various parts to find out where you went wrong. If it is all wired correctly and the resistance of the left and right driver are measuring about the same then you probably have one driver wired backwards
@@CustomCans Thank you for your fast respond. I tried it now once again and watched your video carefuly and finally made it. First i thought i burned the platine but its workin now, ty ty ty :D i was about to go to an professional to let him fix it, glad i checked if u answered me. Thank you so much!
Cheers for the vid dude! Did my soldering and thought I was home free but I must have gone wrong as the panning sounds off in everything I'm listening to. Is this something to do with phase testing? Vocals and bass all sound like are panned left 😭
OK, rewatched and clocked the bit where you said one should swap the wires on the right driver if it's out of phase. Just did that but I'm still getting all vocals and bass on the left. I'm super confused. Don't know if you'll see this but hope springs! I'm daft.
Yes, it sound like you have something wired incorrectly. Do you have a multimeter? also - if your driver one of the new ones with the little circuit board or the older ones with the metal stakes for the wires to attach to. If it is one of the newer ones, does it have the 0 and 1 printed on the paper part near the connectors?
Very informative video. How much would it cost if I send you my pair of DT 990 Pros so you could repair the wire like in this video. Today I could barely hear the audio out of the left ear and I had my windows volume max. The right ear was perfectly fine.
Question? My trs adapter broke and was replaced and now one side is not working. I tested the speaker and it shows power, when I test the jack piece only one side is reading full ohms. Is this what I need to do to fix my problem? Thanks.
OK so I followed along, but now my right ear is correct, but my left ear is center channel, and center (both ears at once) is left channel. What have I done?
I can't think of a way to do that ;) 1st I would use the video below to check if that is indeed the case - they may be out of phase - when you get to the phase test bit, if the out of phase sounds right, you have one driver wired the wrong way round ruclips.net/video/kUT6ZhFdLkA/видео.html
@@CustomCans I swapped the other ear like you said in the video but it didn't work! Here's how I wired it: imgur.com/a/UZg1v4t I assume I need to swap the black and white?
The black wire is the ground so currently you have the headband cable connected to left positive and right positive. you will need to unsolder the red wire from the headband cable and solder it to the pad next to the black wire. then run the phase test again and make sure they are in phase
@@CustomCans This wiring resulted in the center and left channels playing in both sides, but the right channel not playing at all. i.imgur.com/NVL5Q6J.jpg Sorry for being useless. I just don't understand what wiring I need to be aiming for!
@@drekly looks like you moved the white wire from the hedband rather than moving the red one. The Main cable would be the one from the jack and the headband cable is the one that goes over the head to the right side. As you are looking at it on your image the 6 pads should have Black ( main cable ) Red (Headband Cable) Red ( main cable ) white (headband cable) Blank White ( main cable ) Then once you have it set up like that you need to run a phase test - if they are then out of phase, swap the white and red from the headband cable. The pad you have empty looks a bit knackered - if that is the case, that is just used to join those two centre wires. you can just solder the two wires together directly and not use that pad ( main red and headband white )
Afraid that right from the start (2 mins), those headphones are different to the DT770, which have no visible screw that you can take out on the left ear.
I am not 100% certain what you mean as we have dismantled thousands of DT770 and DT990 and they both come apart the same way. Here is a link to a video disassembling the DT770 ruclips.net/video/HLfxeyZOQW0/видео.html
maybe a bit late but i have like the very old dt990 from the 80/90s but i accidently made the points to warm is there someway to fix it? or is it doomed
The super think voice coil wire has probably broken... if there is a bit still attached you may be able to glue the tab back on and solder the voice coil wire to the bottom of it
I've done the mic mod for my dt 990 but one of the cables might've gotten slightly mangled. Trying to figure out what sort of awg and diameter these tiny cables are to order some. Any idea?
Thanks a bunch my good sir, I had an old headphone, with 3 of those connectors, but a new cable... but not that new hence it did not have that extra clip you had, yeah it is weird, I know :D Thanks to your tips and tricks I managed to succeed the first attempt, cheers! If you, like me, have an older headset that has different colors on the cables, below might do the trick for you: (If you have a black, white and red cable, black » ground, red = R and white is L If you have a dot on the left side, that is positive like indicated, so you´d have to solder white - red - ground (black cable in my case) of course the safest way is to check the wiring with a multimeter as per indicated.

Hello Jason, do you know if it is possible easily to change the 2.5mm cable connector on the AKG K361 to a standard 3.5mm female connector? Many thanks in advance.
@@CustomCans well iirc (got new headphones lol), the driver cable was a bunch of fibers which somehow didnt deliver any signal and were really difficult to attach in the first place
Found my way here as I cannot find a single adapter or extension cable for the DT990's that work. Every one, no matter how expensive, only gives right speaker. Fine into the amp, fine into the PC, but add any one of 20 adapters or 5 extenders, and no left audio. Really regretting buying these. Official Beyer extender is no longer manufactured and others on the market do not fit the threaded 3.5m end, thus changing the cable with a longer one is my only option. Can I send them to you Jason to fit a longer cable?
I think you may not be pushing the jack into the adapter far enough - these have "pro" 3.5m jacks and need a bit more force to engage them properly. Try that. I have not had any problems using them in extension leads .. but we do use quite fancy jacks on our extensions :)
@@CustomCans Many thanks for the reply. It must be the £15 Roland cables I was told would work with any headset. Clicks are solid into every adapter, and I can add multiple adapters to the 990 cable - 3.5 to 1/4 into 1/4-3.5 x 2 etc - a foot of adapters! lol - into PC and AMP and I get audio from both cans, so somehow, the Roland cable is the culprit. Tried pushing harder but it's as solid as possible and still only right can audio. Roland cable is fine with other crappy headsets, so I've probs bought the wrong one - deffo bought stereo TS with shielding - just checked the website, but I've messed up somewhere. If the metal stakes mentioned at 6:24 do indeed come off is the driver just dead or is there a way to save it? For a bit more detail. The left and the middle stake (so for ground and right connection) came off while the right one (for left ear) didnt. I put them back in place but after connecting everything back up the right ear cup works the left one where the stakes were removed and reinserted dont work anymore. Is my assumption that the voice coil wire broke and i need to replace the speaker correct? Is there a way to save the driver?
The middle one does not matter as that is just there to join the right cable but the left one will have been connected to the voice coil wire - if you are lucky it will be fixable - if you look at the one that stayed attached.... there is a super thin wire attached to the bottom of it underneath. That ill have snapped off on the one that came away and if there is enough length left attached to the driver you will be able to solder it back on or use a short piece of wire to make a bridge to it
@@CustomCans the wire doesn't have to be as thin as the one that's there already? You're a huge help to the community as I'm sure you know! And thank you very much for the quick reply!

i was cleaning the dt990s and since cleaning with water the left ear has lost all bass and 75% of volume, what is the best guess to what has gone wrong ? any ideas guys? Thanks
@@CustomCans thanks... its been some time but still seems the bass is gone on the left side and also 75% volume loss.... I ordered some cheap electronic screwdrivers and will open it up and see if any solder joints broke loose and test continuity of the cable!
The side of my headphones which does not connect to the cable is the one not working properly anymore. If I twist the cable i can sometimes still hear everything just fine on this side. I assume the soldering on the driver is the issue, not the cable?
For some reason my left ear has stopped working but my right is still fine, it just randomly stopped last night but after a few solid taps it started up again. Again tonight its just stopped but only in the left, do you think that could just be a bad solder or a dead driver?
probably not a dead driver if it starts working again - they tend to die permanently. Probably a break in the cable or bad solder joint - they are easy enough to open up and have a look to see if the wires are attached firmly
@@CustomCans I've had a look and as far as i can tell the solders look fine so do you think it could just be a fucked cable? Is there anyway I can check the continuity to the left ear before I try to replace the full cable just to check that that is the issue?

@@CustomCans Thanks so much for your help! GRD->left I get about 240, GRD->right about 460 impedance. Do you think it could be a wiring issue? The new cable had different colours, so I replaced copper + red + blue by white + red + black.
@@CustomCans Ah, I think I found the error. Confused GND and the left channel. I'll get to resoldering now and report back. But again, thank you very much for your help. I contacted the Beyerdynamic service earlier, and all they told me was to buy both drivers new, and then it "might" work again. EDIT: Aaaand it works! :)
It depends on the issue, If it is a cable issue then it would cost £20-30 to fix if the driver is dead then then it would be closer to £60 so maybe not worth it
the solder points are so close together you have to be an ace solderer to get things attached. I have never had the soldering skill and obviously still don't have the skills.
@@CustomCans tbh honest mate. I was gutted for the past 3 days, since they have broken, I snapped the jack end accidentally. Thinking i was going to have to fork out a hefty sum for a new one. I thought to myself surely a decent branded studio headphone would allow for the replacement of parts.
Hello thank you very much for the guide but i am french and i don't understand everything what you say and the video quality isn't good. Can you resume with text what ground must link on pine right, and left link on extreme pin left... I don't know if my question is clear ? If you answer me you are my Savior 😁
On the cable, the black is ground, white is left and red is right. The connections on the driver vary depending on how old they are so it is best just to copy how yours was originally wired
I just tried this and excuse my french, but why the hell does the soldering tin in the headphone take minutes to melt?!? Why is it that when I try to melt my soldering tin, it only takes a second, but when I do the same thing on the driver, it takes almost half a minute? And why does it not stick to the board? And who the f even came up with soldering?!? Have I mentioned how much I hate soldering? And how much soldering evidently hates me?
You will find that adding a bit of fresh solder to the tip or your Iron before trying to de solder them will cause it to melt almost instantly as long as you soldering iron is hot enough (350 degrees C or more)
I'm looking to buy the DT770, could anybody tell me how hard it is to replace the cables? In case the cable gets damaged if it gets stuck somewhere? Thanks
The latest cables are pretty strong and it is unlikely you would break it but if you are OK with a soldering iron and understand which wires go where it is pretty easy. It takes our technician under 10mins but probably factor in half an hour if it is the 1St time you have done it
i know im about a year after upload but i just broke the wire that goes over the band (its the wire that goes to the left side) and idk where to soucr it if i can at all, anyone got any sugestions/links to where i can souce the broken wire?

Thanks.
@@zvelekva I have not tried the 1.6m but I can see no reason it would not fit ... most of the DT770 and 990 parts are interchangeable
Thank you for posting this. My cat decided to chew my dt 990's. Easy job thanks to your direction.
It must be a thing... 4 or 5 people have reported cat related cable disasters on these
exactly why i'm here haha
Brilliant video. Nice, simple and explained in plain English. Just ordered myself a straight cable for my DT990's. The coiled/curled cable is so heavy and always gets in the way. Cannot wait to get this little DIY job done next weekend. Thanks!
no problem
How did it go?
I have these headphones in my cart but worried about the cable, this has sold me, I can easily do this if needed thanks for you! God bless!
No problem 👍 the newer cables are more durable as well
+1
Ordered my cable. I'm gonna change it soon. With this explanation, I'm sure I'll manage. Thank you for making this video.
My top tip would be to take a photo of where the wires go as reference before you remove the old one. I get a lot of people messaging because they got the wires in the wrong order ;)
@@CustomCans
The colors of the wires in the new cable are different. I used a multimeter to check every connection. It worked out perfectly.
Thanks so much for the video. This really helped me repair my dt990 pro. First time soldering and repairing a headset in one go!
Glad it helped

Thanks, this helped! Wonderful timing, I was just about to start my repair when you uploaded this :)
You are welcome!

The new jack has left right and ground. which wire goes to what? is the red now for the left because of how beyerdynamics does it? thanks!!!!
On the main cable it is normally red for right white for left and black for ground from what I remember
@@CustomCans great thank you!! I’ll check with a phase video after
Hey - thanks for the vid.
Just mangled my 2nd pair of Beyer_Dynamic headphones by getting up too quicky! Straight cables are my nemesis now.
Sad times. The latest cables are kevlar reinforced, I don't know it that will help

Hi, I just recently had the end of the aux tip break and don’t know how to replace them. I saw you have a small business but I don’t know if you take repairs, I’m base in the UK so shipping should be simple. Could you let me know if you could help? I believe I just need a new cable just like in this video
Yeh - pop us an email through the website. It would be £20 + postage to replace your cable
Is there risk for the wires touching and interfering with each other? I remember a cable repair guide that instructed to cover the wires with isolating tape and add some glue to hold everything in place.
The wires have a coating on them and do not come covered from the factory but it can't hurt to insulate them as well
Hey, the cables are out of stock, any info on where to find new ones?
Hi, any recommendations for purchasing (UK) a replacement straight cable for DT 990 Pro? There currently isn't one on your site. Cheers.
You can buy them direct from polar audio ( beyer's UK arm ) or keep an eye on our site as we should have a few more listed next week, you just have to be quick and get in there before anyone else snaps them up ;) _ I will try to get Sylvia to list them on monday
just fixed mine while watching.. thought i was gonna have a epileptic fit the way my hands was shaking. works tho cheers..

But would still love to know what the issue could be
No, it is not a common fault and I would not be able to tell what is wrong without opening them up and doing some tests
I can't seem to find vids on fixing Custom One's.. I have a broken pair that's so costly to send for repair I could just buy all the things and really make it a custom one, thanks for the vids!
What is broken on them?
Helped me out today, thanks!
Glad it helped!
sorry if this is a stupid question, but If one wanted too have a cable coming out of each earcup and remove the head band cable how would you got about doing this ?
It is not a stupid question but it is possibly one of those ones where if you have to ask, you probably should not attempt it ;)
You would have to drill a hole in the right earcup the right size for your cable and then seal up around the headband cable holes and around the cables with something like hot glue.
! thanks
ok so i just got my DT 990 pros back from warrenrty repair and I'm PRETTY sure the drivers are in backward. the audio seems to be pushing the correct way when i have the cups on backward but now i got the issue of trying to flip the R & L channles on my damn PC which is all i use them on but i don't know if i should complain and send them back or not
the drivers should be on correctly i can't tell at this point the sound is weird when
Hi - it is unlikely L and R will be swapped because of the way the cabling works but one driver may be out of phase.
You can use the video below to test them. It will check the left and right and then check phase. If they sound right when the video is out of phase and wrong when it is in phase that that is the issue
ruclips.net/video/kUT6ZhFdLkA/видео.html
I have a faulty one. Dont have the original cable replacement. Can i just use a AUX cable cut and solder?
Probably, you will just have to knot it inside the earcup to stop it from being pulled out
hello, just wonder if one of the tiny cord mentioned at 5:44 is broken can it be fixed easily or should I change the whole driver? Cheers
No it is not at all easy to fix but worth a try as you can't make it any worse
@@CustomCans thanks a lot! One more thing about it, is there anything special for the cord or is it simply a skinny copper wire
A quick video on how to test your drivers with a multimeter to see if they still work would be great
My pin bent and broke so I bought a fresh cable from your site, but I cannot seem to get the soldering correct despite following the video, the right is the only one that ever works.
Do you know when there will be a restock on your website?
You could replace the cable with one from the MMX300 or re-jack the current cable
@@CustomCans oh cool! I just saw a comment that as it is a 4 pin xlr, if i replace the cable, it will just be mono, is that correct? Or i can make it stereo
would be nice if you had zoomed in once you started removing wires with the iron. it all gets washed out in the white light.
We may re-soot this at some point now we have some fancier cameras
Hi the wire at the side from the headset to eachspeaker got eaten by my dog, any idea what type of cable it is so i can replace?
Thank you. I repaired headphones a cat chewed up. Skipped the stupid cable and soldered in a 3.5mm female stereo jack.
We see loads of people who's beyer cables get chewed by cats - there must just be something about them that cats love/hate
How do you get the damn metal clip back in there? I tried for a good 30 minutes and gave up in frustration.
I know this is probably not what you want to hear but it is just the same as taking it out only in reverse. Make sure the cable is pushed into hole with some force before you try to get it in. Make sure the clip is the right way round and it should all go back together
what if the wires are already severed, how can i know where to wire my new cable up to?
So,all you RNCM,Chethams,Manchester uni music proffs/students....wake up and smell the coffee :
Beyer don't make toys and CC do make Beyers deliver more, and better.
If cables changed the sound they would come equipped with them in the first place.
Very helpful, thank you!
no problem
We would charge £20 + postage
Question? My trs adapter broke and was replaced and now one side is not working. I tested the speaker and it shows power, when I test the jack piece only one side is reading full ohms. Is this what I need to do to fix my problem? Thanks.
I would open up the jack you fitted and make sure there are not shorts first as they may cause that issue
OK so I followed along, but now my right ear is correct, but my left ear is center channel, and center (both ears at once) is left channel. What have I done?
I can't think of a way to do that ;) 1st I would use the video below to check if that is indeed the case - they may be out of phase - when you get to the phase test bit, if the out of phase sounds right, you have one driver wired the wrong way round
ruclips.net/video/kUT6ZhFdLkA/видео.html
As you are looking at it on your image the 6 pads should have
Black ( main cable )
Red (Headband Cable)
Red ( main cable )
white (headband cable)
Blank
White ( main cable )
Then once you have it set up like that you need to run a phase test - if they are then out of phase, swap the white and red from the headband cable.
Here is a link to a video disassembling the DT770

Thanks to your tips and tricks I managed to succeed the first attempt, cheers!
If you, like me, have an older headset that has different colors on the cables, below might do the trick for you:
(If you have a black, white and red cable, black » ground, red = R and white is L
If you have a dot on the left side, that is positive like indicated, so you´d have to solder white - red - ground (black cable in my case) of course the safest way is to check the wiring with a multimeter as per indicated.
Glad it worked out and yes - beyer seems to change the colours of the wires every few years ;)

I would very much like to purchase a fancy extension cable from you if possible. I've spent £50 quid just trying to solve this problem, first pair of proper cans too! Give me a link or suggestion and I'll click straight away Jason.
Bought another extender from 'Andertons Music' and the wiring behind the head is loose. Can you suggest any extender cable that will work with the DT990's please?

@@CustomCans i see! I'll get on that then! Thanks for the help!
@@Ragnoras69 Just be super careful as you probably only get one chance to get it right
@@CustomCans I thought so. Will try what i can, thanks again!
do you do cable mods yourself? i bent the headphone jack and want to replace the cable.
I work at Custom Cans in the UK - we normally take in repairs but we are a bit booked up with work at the moment so not taking any more repairs in until june unfortunately. It may be worth checking with beyerdynamic as they may be able to do a chargeable repair on them
@@CustomCans how would i get in touch with them, email? i live in michigan if that helps at all
i was cleaning the dt990s and since cleaning with water the left ear has lost all bass and 75% of volume, what is the best guess to what has gone wrong ? any ideas guys? Thanks
If you got the driver wet then it may be OK once it fully dries out.
@@CustomCans thanks... its been some time but still seems the bass is gone on the left side and also 75% volume loss.... I ordered some cheap electronic screwdrivers and will open it up and see if any solder joints broke loose and test continuity of the cable!
would a ifix it kit work with this?
If it has a T6 screwdriver and a soldering iron then yes ;)
@@CustomCans thx😎👍
The side of my headphones which does not connect to the cable is the one not working properly anymore. If I twist the cable i can sometimes still hear everything just fine on this side. I assume the soldering on the driver is the issue, not the cable?
It could be either - you would have to open them up and have a look / test with a multimeter
@@CustomCans okay, thank you very much.
Can you film it closer? Abacadabra
If I ever re-make the video, I will. In the mean time... move your face closer to the screen ;)
@@nope110 yes if you have a multimeter or something... Check for continuity between the tip of the jack and the positive side of the driver
@@CustomCans ok thanks ill give it a go
@@CustomCans I've got continuity from the tip of the jack to the 2 solder joints connected to a blue cable, I've not got a pen mark or anything though so I've no idea if that's positive or negative, any ideas?
Edit) I've saw someone say that the blue is the left channel positive, so dead driver? It looks fine and seems weird that it'd just give up, come back, then die again if it was a dead driver
Will this work for MMX 300 as well?
Yes but you wiring would be trickier as you have the mic wires to deal with as well
Thanks a lot.
Glad it was helpful
Amazing how simple you make it look. Lol
I have had a bit of practice ;)
Just did the cable switch on my DT 880s, but now the volume on the right side is lower than on the left side. Does anybody have an idea what I've done wrong and if I can fix it somehow?
Use a multimeter to measure the impedance left and right, you may have a short somewhere or maybe you wired it up incorrectly.
Can I send mine to you for repair? based on your accent you sound close! Just wondering how much this would be. Right driver gone :(
It depends on the issue, If it is a cable issue then it would cost £20-30 to fix if the driver is dead then then it would be closer to £60 so maybe not worth it
I don't have a pair of that heating stick machine is it an absolute necessity and what could i use instead?
You do really need a soldering iron to do this kind of job and it would be best to practice on something else if you have not used one before
@@CustomCans Such heartbreaking news 💔 Could you please suggest any place where I could get it fixed?
@@Daresigmally Which country are you in?
@@CustomCans Saudi Arabia haha I know this might sound unfamiliar
@@Daresigmally I would contact www.havpro.com/. They are the Beyerdynamic distributor in your area and should have a service centre
What are those tiny voice call back wires for?
The voice coil wires go to the electromagnet that moves the diaphragm
the solder points are so close together you have to be an ace solderer to get things attached. I have never had the soldering skill and obviously still don't have the skills.
;) you do need a fine soldering tip and a steady hand for this kind of thing
I sure do wish they made that cable detachable :D
I am glad they don't - we make a few hundred quid a month modding them ;)
you just saved me 180 bucks
and saved some more headphones from landfill :)
@@CustomCans part ordered and they will be fixed tomorrow
It takes our technician under 10mins but probably factor in half an hour if it is the 1St time you have done it
@@CustomCans Thanks, I'll definitely use your video if mine ever breaks
i know im about a year after upload but
i just broke the wire that goes over the band (its the wire that goes to the left side) and idk where to soucr it if i can at all, anyone got any sugestions/links to where i can souce the broken wire?
We have some in stock £3 plus postage. Just email custom cans and ask for one
i came here cause my headphones dont work but forgot that i cant watch the video without them
LOL ;)

I can warn you a little. I was cautious and checked everything via multimeter. It was too difficult for me and i fucked my headphones totally ! But your video is ace tho! 💪
