    Always struck me as odd most established races didn’t venture far from home. Vulcan, Andor, Tellar and Denobula all seemed concentrated on a single world. Humans by comparison grabbed and colonised any planet they stumbled upon. Perhaps that’s why they were seen as aggressive and dangerous. A new Klingon or Romulan Empire in the making.

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 2 года назад +14

      Yes, there’s a big difference between travelling to other worlds (exploring) and settling on distant worlds (expanding and exploiting). Starfleet ships were therefore seen by some as scouts for waves of settlers.

    • @Nostripe361
      @Nostripe361 2 года назад +4

      I believe it is less to do with being aggressive and more to do with the fact that they had the other forces to deal with. Though the Denobulains and Vulcans were stated to be either slow or mostly uninterested in mass exploration. As for Tellar and Andor I think it was more the fact that they put a lot of their resources in their defense fleets and dealing with the other two of the three major races in the region.

    Romulans always got in the first shots because Star Fleet would never hit first, not even when their space was invaded. They, the Federation always had to take the first damage. That was the Romulan's biggest advantage. Also in the early years of conflict, the Romulans had better more advanced ships and greater numbers. They also had a time advantage, they were in space longer. The Federation caught up because they expanded through conversion of other cultures planets and systems. Others could join the Federation. That was not the case with the Romulans.

    It always got me that in the Star Trek series, it became canon that the Federation agreed to limit itself to not equipping ships with cloaking devices. That your two greatest threats, the Klingons and Romulans had all their ships such equipped and often operating engaging their cloaking devices even when on routine patrol was crazy the Fedetation gave up that technology in regular use by opponents. That is like the US giving up nukes when the Soviets kept theirs. Federation ships should have had cloaking devices. Another aspect of the Romulans and Klingons, they operated their ships in triumvirates. While even in war, the Federation operated their ships singly. If they had operated in tandem with other vessels, there would be no need for the Kobiashi Maru training scenario during Star Fleet Academy training. Also, I know it was a lazy writing device for story telling, but in reality, starships should have been much more hardened to take incoming phaser and photon torpedo fire. How stupid was it that after taking a few volleys of enemy fire, shields were almost gone and such. Just my done of my longtime dislikes of Star Trek story telling.

      In the original series, you see the Enterprise engage both Romulans and Klingons in one-on-one battles. I guess the logical reason for not incorporating multiple ship patrols as the norm, is that it would've weighed down the story line and been a recurring nightmare for script writers.

      I now wish I had gave it the support it deserved. :(
      I gave up on STD by the second episode when it was clear they were using the franchise to push a SJW type message,which of course was later admitted to when they made a reference to "trump supporters" being the klingons,so even tho pike may have made the second season better as some say I for one will never support it.

      yeah i don't understand why they felt the need for the whole time travel arc, it ends up being superfluous anyway. DISCO season 1 didn't feel like star trek it spent too much trying to be dark and edgy and left you with few likable characters. as for the political agenda if you watch seasons 1-2 of TNG they are also sometimes quite on the nose. weather season 3 will see a new direction i don't know but its not unusual for trek.

    Well I hope it taught Starfleet that they needed to kick ship building into extreme overdrive. Having so few ships to defend your planet is ridiculous. If it were some sort of game I would be building ships left and right at different planets in case of an attack on one. Major recourses would have gone into building a fleet so large no one would want to even try to attack.

    Many people are starting to write the same thing as I have long ago. The Earth-Romulan War should have been covered long ago, in either its own, 2-hour movie, or on ENTERPRISE. Enterprise could have omitted the non-canonical, bizarre, Xindi War, which made no sense and was never part of Earth's history and instead portrayed the Romulan War. If not, then at least a fifth season needed to be approved. The problem is, Paramount seemed oddly reticent to depict the Earth-Romulan War. Perhaps the cancellation of ENTERPRISE after only four, popular seasons served the purpose of avoiding depicting the Earth-Romulan War.

    • @MsSissiePooh
      @MsSissiePooh 2 года назад

      I would have preferred a three-part Earth-Romulan War miniseries, if we couldn’t get a Season 5 of Enterprise. A two-hour movie, while it might seem like a good idea, wouldn’t be able to cover all of the events which took place during that time… which is why I look at Enterprise as a series that could have had the chance to lay the foundation for the Earth-Romulan War in its first two or three seasons, but it missed so many opportunities to do so.

    • @jeffyoung60
      @jeffyoung60 2 года назад +1

      @@MsSissiePooh Yeah, as I wrote, Paramount from the very get go has always been reluctant to portray the Earth-Romulan War. They've avoided it like the plague. So has the rest of Hollywood. I own the Star Trek canonical book, FEDERATION. The chapter on the Earth-Romulan War is extremely fascinating. Earth had been instrumental in creating the first Coalition of Planets because Earth had no prior entanglements with any of the Alpha Quadrant planets. Victory in the Earth-Romulan War propelled Earth to de facto leadership in the new Federation. Over a quick space of time, the two most influential voices in the Federation became the de facto Earth-Vulcan alliance.
      Even today, I see no interest coming out of Hollywood to film the Earth-Vulcan War. There is no new, main channel Star Trek series forthcoming. There's the successful, three-season Enterprise but it's on a special cable station and not everyone wants to subscribe to it just to watch the Enterprise, which takes place just before Captain Kirk. That show takes place in the early 23rd century about eighty years or so after the Earth-Romulan War.

    • @MsSissiePooh
      @MsSissiePooh 2 года назад

      @@jeffyoung60 - I’ve never understood why Paramount/ViacomCBS was (and still is, maybe?) so incredibly reluctant to portray the Earth-Romulan War in the various Star Trek series, since this was *the* pivotal event which led to the birth and rise of the United Federation of Planets, and Starfleet Command.
      I noted that there was no hesitancy on Paramount’s part to portray the Xindi War (Enterprise) and the Dominion War (DS9), but to leave the depiction of the most crucial event in the Federation/Starfleet’s history to a series of novels which, while all are good, aren’t “official canon” (according to Paramount/ViacomCBS) is such a great shame, since we could have seen some remarkable storytelling, and gain insight as to how and why the Federation came to be, and learn more about the people - Terran, Vulcan, Andorian and others - who played significant roles in creating the Federation.
      Even though we now have new management at the helm of the Star Trek franchise and at ViacomCBS/Paramount, I’m not holding my breath regarding whether we’ll finally see the Earth-Romulan War become part of the official on-screen canon, instead of continuing to always dance around it, and refusing to “boldly go” forward to tell us this part of the story.

    • @jeffyoung60
      @jeffyoung60 2 года назад +1

      @@MsSissiePooh Stephanie, you took the words out of my mouth. On other RUclips posts I've written almost the same thing you wrote, literally word for word. On IMDB, when it was possible to leave comments, I asked the very same question. No one knows the reason(s) why Paramount and Hollywood were and remain reluctant to portray the Earth-Romulan War. It would take someone from within Paramount who is in the know to reveal the reason. But for all these decades no one has come forward. Certainly it would be expensive because of all of the special effects. It would cost something in the neighborhood of the Star Wars Clone Wars movie which showed intergalactic space battles.
      The problem is that there are NO real Star Trek fans within Paramount and the rest of Hollywood. The Star Trek franchise is simply a business and the profit line is what matters. Even if that means crummy Star Trek movies and often poorly written tv show episodes, if that is what it takes to generate quick profits then so be it. To date the one excellent Star Trek movie remains, "First Contact".

    • @MsSissiePooh
      @MsSissiePooh 2 года назад

      @@jeffyoung60 - This is what kinda ticks me off with Paramount/ViacomCBS. For the past 55 years, much has been made of the Earth-Romulan War as being the crucial event in the Prime Star Trek timeline which led to the birth of the United Federation of Planets and established Starfleet Command as a part of the Federation, yet we’ve never seen it depicted on screen. We get some mentions of it in TOS, but not much else. Same holds true for TNG, while the Earth-Romulan War wasn’t mentioned much in DS9 and Voyager.
      Now, we got the Xindi War/Temporal Cold War in seasons 2 & 3 of Enterprise, which (from what I understand) many Trek fans didn’t want to see, and the storytelling we got during that story arc ranged from dull to meh, with the occasional decent episode (“Similitude”, “Stratagem” and “Twilight”). DS9 gave us the Dominion War, and during that story arc, we did get some pretty darn good episodes (“In The Pale Moonlight” being one of the best) and the kind of epic storytelling that keeps people watching.
      And I think that’s what missing from what’s called “Nu Trek”; where’s the epic storytelling that used to thrill us every week and get us to tune in? Today, there’s far too much emphasis on being “woke”, and it makes some of the “Nu Trek” show episodes a chore to watch because “wokeness” is being shoved down our throats, instead of giving us good storytelling which can tackle a controversial subject - and it seems as though the Earth-Romulan War fits into that “controversial” category - and not slam us over the head with this “oh, look at us! See how ‘woke’ we are?” nonsense which feels forced, artificial and unreal.
      I also think that when Star Trek officially graduated to a “Franchise”, that pretty much ended any efforts to “boldly go where no one has gone before” in terms of visual storytelling and taking risks with that storytelling. While I understand that visual effects make up a good chunk of the budget of a show like Discovery, for example, it should be possible to have good visual effects - particularly for the space battles, which would be part of the Earth-Romulan War story - and a decent script which can tell the story in four to six hours (eight hours maximum), highlighting not only the battles in space, but the conflicts among everyone involved, from Starfleet officers to the Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites and other alien races, in order to end the war, and bring about what would become the Federation.
      Unfortunately, Star Trek has played it way too safe far too often, by blandly going where everyone else has already gone, and it’s bringing nothing new to the table… which is probably why some fans are justifiably angry with “Nu Trek”, because it does feel like it’s nothing more than a cash grab done by people who don’t really care about the franchise and the people who are willing to invest time and pay good money (whether it’s a movie, Blu-ray/DVD or a subscription to Paramount+) to watch, when it should be giving us good storytelling that’s worth watching. A Star Trek Earth-Romulan War limited series - with a powerhouse script, a cast of good actors, a good director (or directors), high quality visual effects and an incredible orchestral score - could bring back those disappointed, angry and discouraged Trek fans who gave up and walked away from the franchise in the wake of JJ Abrams and Alex Kurtzman’s takeover.

    Sol's asteroid belt is not dense enough to hide a fleet in or behind. It's called the asteroid belt because there are more asteroids there than elsewhere but that's a relative thing.
    There are a lot of Jovian moons but the ones big enough for a ship to hide behind are few, mostly just the four Galilean ones. They are never all that close to each other. At the sorts of velocities these ships would be moving at and the number of ships involved, and therefore the total width of the "sensor array" the enemy would have had a 5 ship squadron would have been hard pressed to hide in any of those moons shadows for long without a lot of EW help.
    As another commenter pointed out the outer planets are most unlikely to be neatly lined up like that ever (and why would a fleet drop out at Pluto anyway?). One of them might be in line with the Centauri system at any given time but the rest are likely to be elsewhere. A clever admiral would also drop out of warp well outside the planetary orbits and plot a course to avoid all of the planets except Earth allowing him to avoid any stations, sublight ships based at them etc. In open space D'deridex would have numbers and superior tech on his side. Humanity would need the Andorians or Vulcans to assist or face planetary bombardment.
