    Considering the fact that the Federation was de facto at war with Cardassia, it makes their failure to intervene on Bajor even more unacceptable

    • @lynngreen7978
      @lynngreen7978 2 года назад +18

      The real impressive part was that Starfleet Intelligence wasn't even interested in the Bajor system. Otherwise they'd have known Ferengi weren't cannibalistic, and weren't terribly physically impressive. Quark was on Terok Nor long before official First Contact was made at Delphi Ardu.

    • @miles2378

      I thought the Cardasian ocupation of Bajor predated the Boarder wars by several decades.

    • @Rabijeel
      @Rabijeel 2 года назад +8

      Bajor was not "inside Federation Space". It was like the US intervening in some African Country.
      Large Distance for supplys, no local production, Supplylines had been able to be pirated by Cardassians.
      The few Outposts and settlements were not developed enough yet and thus is the reason Cardassia sought to prevent them from developing further.
      It's kinda the final Frontier where the Farms and settlements were out there on their own - there were no Forts or such there; the overtaken Station Terok Nor was formed as the first one.
      Also, the Federation had been able to crush Cardassia, but that had not soved any problem.
      In Fact, as the Political Enviroment was problematic, doing so had weakened the Bond to the Klingons more - ironically.
      Also, the Romulans, in their weakened Position and fearful as ever, had surely not considered any "Peace Talks" with a Federation that Geonicided off a whole Race.
      The real disgrace is that they did not intervene to help Cardassia in the first Place, which had earned them a new Ally and solved a later Dominion-War Problem.
      That also had shown the Romulans that independent cooperation with the Starfleet had saved a Empire rather than killing it off, strenghening the whole Sector.
      That Way, Cardassia had been able to overcome their Problems and return to their former Political System of balnace and culture. The Romulans could also profit from huge recources set free for not needing to completeley control rather than just "spy around friendly" aka diplomacy. Their Research in Fields and Dimensional Physics had been very valueable for Federation as Federation Particle Physics had for them, even saving their Planets.
      Klingons could have had... .welll, nothing aside "beeing Klingons". Everything else could be understood as derogative, and that is clearly not my intention as their honor is the most impressive Feat aside their prowess in Combat.
      And Cardassians could have become an economical backbone for the whole Region, rivaling the Ferengi Economy in trade and production Efficiency.
      Just think what happens when the Dominion meets this Federation and the other allied Empires. Look at the size and capabilitys of the Cardassians and then look at what they pumped out into the War. Their efficiency is most impressive and - to be honest - the Klingons have enslaved more Races than the Cardassians; even after the Khitomer Accords and the Treaty of Khitomer.

      You mean the ones who refused to recognize the peace treaty and be relocated - at the Federation's expense - to worlds on the Federation side of the new border?
      Nobody was abandoned. A war was fought over this. Starfleet personnel died over this. It was not, ultimately, a war that could be won without critically weakening the Federation against other threats.
      There was a negotiated peace. Both sides gave up colony worlds to the other. Both sides relocated their civilians to respect the new border. Some refused to leave. That is their own fault.

    • @nicholaswalsh4462
      @nicholaswalsh4462 8 месяцев назад +2

      @lyinarbaeldeth2456 right. Because the government forcing people to leave their homes is a good thing.
      And I should note that the Maquis didn't start fighting until AFTER the Cardassians had engaged in provocations, attempting to again force them from their homes. And while these people were on the Cardassian side of the line, they were still Federation citizens. Citizens abandoned to the not so tender mercies of the Cardassians until they began to stand up for themselves. THEN the Federation decided to care. Not when the Cardassians were arming their settlers and using the military to force Federation citizens from their homes. Only when those Federation citizens took up armed resistance to defend their homes and communities. And what did the Federation do? They punished the Maquis.

      I find myself thinking the same thing until I remember that Starfleet is deceptively vicious, which seems proportionate to how threatened they feel (especially Earth). Archer was prepared to suicide-bomb the Xindi weapon and Picard was prepared to execute a Borg genocide after each enemy threatened Earth just once. While Odo was on Earth to help with security (because Earth felt threatened), Starfleet infected him with the intention of causing complete genocide. I think a really interesting and under appreciated moment in all of Star Trek was Martok’s reaction to the Breen attack on Earth. He basically said that even the Klingons didn’t have the balls to attack Earth like that. Since the Klingons have more balls than is reasonable and also glorify honorable attacks they can’t survive, it could be inferred that Klingons had a familiarity with Starfleet (humans in particular) that extended to a wisdom about the dangers of their true nature when backed in a corner.
      But until they get backed into that corner, I agree with you that they never seem like they have it in them.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  4 года назад +15

      i agree the more politicized and bureaucratic nature of the federation combined with the fact its constantly expanding means its quite easy to lose touch with citizens and ignorant of their concerns. in my view of the 4 years war the klingons were perfectly happy to conduct maneuver warfare in deep space destroying fleets sent their way.
      Similarly with the Cardassians they know the federation wants to limit the conflict so won't take the initiative. allowing the cardassians to fight the battles they want. it won't be until later with the launching of the Galor class that the federation politicians take the cardassians seriously.

      The Federation at this time was obsessed with peace and the idea that diplomacy could solve any conflict. Even their starships, while advanced, were not designed for long term conflict.
      The Borg dispelled that notion and the Dominion eradicated it all together.

    • @timaahhh
      @timaahhh 3 года назад +10

       @viralshadow I wouldn't say the Federation was obsessed with peace, but it was logical against the alpha and beta quadrant powers they faced. You have to remember this is a post scarcity society. The federation has mastered energy production and converting energy into matter using deuterium which is among the most abundant fuel in the universe. It wasn't until they faced enemies they could not reason with the Borg and the Dominion that the Federation needed to change their footing. The Federation has no need for fertile land they are incredible efficient at recycling old ships and facilities we often seen 100+ year old ships in perfect working order. They can convert uninhabitable planets into habitable ones. The dominion jokes Federation engineers can turn rocks into replicators.
      In the vastness of space the Federation will glady horse trade colonies to avoid war. They can always just teraform a new planet anyways. While that does create problems for some colonist the federation is logical, fighting a few rebellious colonist makes a whole lot more sense than fighting a regional power. And if you do have to fight a regional power better to do it when you have a greater technological and strategic advantage. The Federation was constantly expanding exploring and integrating new races, planets, and developing new technology at much greater rates than anyone else in the quadrant. All the while Cardassia could not subdue Bajor in 50 years, Bajor... a planet with minimal technology, ships, or weapons. The Federation likely didn't see the Cardassians as a major threat but knew they could bog them down like Bajor was bogging down Cardassia and the Federation didn't have significant enough interest in getting into with Cardassia so they opted for peace when they could.

    I love the strategic and political interplay you got going. The border war is a criminally underdeveloped part of the ST canon. For constructive criticism, you could further reinforce the main idea that the Federation "lost" the border war because it could afford to lose the war. I would suggest you have the Cardassians go very messy, namely urban combat and promoting instability. Maybe use Henry Kissinger's advice that "having 75 percent of your territory 100 percent secured is far better than having 100 percent of your territory 75 percent secured". Also build upon 4th gen warfare that modern dictatorships tend to be good at; that freighter incident should be the first of a slew of terrible incidents where the Cardassians make sure nobody knows the full truth of the matter.

    Have to mention about the ground based combat.
    OK in star trek universe, even hand phasers are so overpowered it's insane, and it's really hard to imagine close in urban combat or firefights when each soldier's carrying essentially a handheld artillery battery.
    A simple phaser pistol is like a super flamethrower mixed in with a neutron bomb. If the gloves come of and people use them at highest setting/wide field, your projecting a cone of relativistic exotic particles across hundreds of feet, you don't even really need to aim, if somebody's in that cone, even if their bodies absorb a fraction of it's energy, like standing next to a naked atomic pile. Ionizing shattering dna and cells, connective tissue turning to goo. You could kill everyone in a theater or auditorium in one shot.

      i agree that the dialogue implies that. but given that its never really shown to be that powerful such as in 'the siege of AR-558' i think we should go with what we see rather than what the writers allege. given that they ignore it when it becomes inconvenient. because frankly that kind of power is jumping the shark. maybe if you overload a hand phaser you could take out a small building. but anything more than that is ludicrous

    • @timberwolf1575
      @timberwolf1575 3 года назад +1

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 Not to mention the power density of the thing's batteries. Think about the kind of power storage technology you have to have in a phaser to vaporize a body in about 1 second like we see in TOS, WOK, TNG, etc. It takes many joules to completely vaporize a body... The phasers in DS9 (like Siege of AR 559) have a much more realistic level of damage (if still HIGH power). The increased size of the phaser rifles also helps with power storage and density.
      I should note power density is a massive problem with phasers because any way of moving power from storage to beam emitter will have waste heat. Whether it is EPS based, uses superconductors, or is based on some exotic conductor, the waste heat would fry the user's hand without super insulators. In many cases, the electromagnetic field generate by the flow of charged particles or electricity would be strong enough to pull iron out of human blood's hemoglobin and do bad things to bone and potassium in muscles. Depending on the frequencies of the EM fields you could end up with a microwave effect impacting other materials (like water in a microwave).
      Now, I would expect the designers to work on settings, shielding, and power delivery to be designed to mitigate those effects. But there is only so much you can do when pointing a particle accelerator powered by a small fusion reactor at someone else. Ironically, the multitude of settings would actually make the problem worse.

    "Sgt. Rutledge" would have been proud. Did y'all know the showrunners intentionally named the 'USS Rutledge' after Woody Strode's character from the movie?! They wanted to pay homage to this underappreciated (if not forgotten) 1960 John Ford production. If you get a chance you should screen the movie. It's groundbreaking for its time.
    ruclips.net/video/6-vcMSVoNkk/видео.html
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Rutledge
    The scene in court during his cross-examination by the prosecution will have you crying. It's one if not the best scene from the movie and possibly Mr. Strode's best performance other than his portrayal of "Draba" in Spartacus during his acting career and If you have seen "Spartacus" you'll know that Mr. Strode stole every scene he was in.
    It's interesting to note that Dr. Ford took multiple takes during the court scene [Sgt.Rutlege]. He wanted to make Mr. Strode furious in real life.
    He did.
    Mr. Strode was so mad at Ford (by the way they were life-long friends) that after the scene was finally shot Mr. Strode picked up the chair he was sitting in and threw it across the room shattering it! He told Ford to never EVER make him angry again.
    Strode walked off stage and began to sob...

      Good points. Also, SO Much of this vid is highly conjectural. I will want sources, I think?
      Stargazer met Cardassians (not first contact, likely - see Juhraya and Legaran conference) with an olive branch, but that does NOT have to mean a truce in a war.
      The DS9 Tech Manual and several novels imply the peak of the war was in the late 2350s, and the episode "Tribunal" implies Setlik was in 2362, not 2347. Some DS9 sources even imply O'Brien wasn't in Starfleet until 2350, additionally.
      It is one of several elements of O'Brien likely retconned between TNG and DS9 (And the 2347 date was always pretty vague, in context)

Comparision to other ships like the Enterprise might be useful or the Romulan warbirds. SIze has no bearing on speed nor on agility in space. Weapons, speed to transit and any other attributed (cloaking) are worth knowing. These are not ships of the sea or flying in an atmosphere or dealing with gravity as they move. It seems amazing that FTL propulsion is discovered yet bingo the Vulcans give us anti-gravity which is an even more amazing gift for spaceships and moving mass

Got a resource-poor homeland and needed outward expansion simply to feed its own people. resorting to extreme cruelty and nationalism. meanwhile, the Federation of planets is completely inept at managing crises outside its own borders. their PRIME DIRECTIVE literally allows the Cardassians to die of completely preventable causes and the Bajoran to suffer under a brutal occupation. ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITHOUT THE PRIME DIRECTIVE. then just to add more Fuck Ups to their growing list, they go for the Appeasment route after refusing to help the Cardassian or Bajoran homelands and thus creating a much wider crisis.
