This is the very scene why I like Back to the Future.
In most time travel movies time travel ist already established or it's treated as no big deal meaning the protagonist adapts pretty quickly to the new situation.
Here, Marty stumbles around, wondering, cannot believe it, thinks it's a dream etc. even after he meets his father and wakes up at his mother's house he cannot believe it. It takes him hours (an enitre day?) to come to terms with it. This feels pretty realistic. Because I think we all would react the same way if we were suddenly thrown into another era. I think we all need (a long) time to adapt. Not just a few minutes.
This makes me, as a viewer, empathize with Marty even more.
In short: The movie takes its time to establish things and thus allows the viewer to feel with the characters. And that's great. 😀

I wish I had a car to let me go back in time so I can fix all my mistakes and change my own life. Hill Valley was a nice place to live in 1955 b/c it was cleaner and nicer and people were friendler and I would give anything to back in time and change my mistakes. I always loved this movie especially when it came out in 1985. Michael J Fox was my huge crush and I wanted him to be my big brother. This movie still is golden even today. The new generation doesn't know what they are missing. They lost out we were kids of America that was back in the 70s 80s 90s and then what happened? Everything changed and everything went to pot. 2001-2024. This movie will be 40 yrs old in 2025. Its hard to believe it was that long ago. Movies were magic then but not now due to CGI and computer and special effects. 1985-2025. I thought we would be having flying cars and aliens and it would be like Star Wars.

If you were a teenager around Marty’s age (16-18) so born in 2006-2008 and went back 30 years it would be 1994

Well dang, I just found out that Mayor Red Thomas was not, in fact, "Red the Bum" from 1985 whose name Marty mentions on his return. I thought they were the same person and it made for an interesting, if sad, side-story for the character. But apparently they are 2 different people. Oh well. In my head canon it will be the same person, who seemed to be as scruffy and run down as his formerly gleaming Town Square had become by 1985.

It really seems like progress has slowed down. Except for electronic devices and the internet, 2024 looks pretty much the same as 1985.

Technology has most certainly not slowed down, what has is fashion and cultural attitudes.

No... It was because Marty wasn't paying attention, and the driver honked to snap him out of the staring and to his or her presence as well. Simple as that.

85 was ok. I was 21 and in love (still together). But it wasn't perfect or even all that great. Enjoy the time in which you live. There are a lot of bad things today, but good things also. Same for every era.

If this movie was made today. People would go back to 1995, the effect wouldn’t be the same as there doesn’t seem to be a massive technological gap between the 90’s and today!

    • @fridgemagnet

I beg to differ. The 1950's had transistors, proto microchips, microwave ovens, nuclear power, stereophonic sound, basic computers, credit cards, transcontinental air travel, television and radio broadcasting, supersonic aircraft and the launch of the first satellite etc etc. The 80's had much of the same only more refined. As someone who grew up in the 80's (I was 14 when I went to the cinema to watch Back To The Future) the impact was not so much of a technological one but a cultural one. The 50's music, fashion and daily life portrayed in the film was the thing that brought about the most delight as an 80's kid. Compare 1995 to today ( I was 25 ) and yes, we had cd's, very basic mobile phones and satellite TV, but I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams that the internet would become what it is today. This alongside the growth of A.I , graphics and computer power that grows exponentially every one and a half years, the technological gap between 1995 and today is way bigger than between 1955 and 1985. Just my 2 cents.

True but show a 90's kid a gaming computer, VR, AI chatbots, or Electric cars. That would show SOME progress at least.
