  • The Skyhook Charlie balloon was launched as part of Operation Skyhook. This scientific experiment involved the launch of three of the largest balloons ever built, equipped with devices to measure and record primary cosmic ray emissions, at altitudes ranging from 18 to 22 miles (29-35 km) above the Earth's surface. The 10-million cubic foot balloon was developed by German-US aeronautics engineer Otto C. Winzen.
This launch (for mission Refly B) took place in the Caribbean, from the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge (CVS-45).
