- Is it possible to kick the knife out of a bad guys hand? Together, myself Ryan Hoover and Amber Staklinski from@FitToFightRepublic along with Icy Mike from @hard2hurt put this question to the test!
Ryan Hoovers Knife Kit

Now, this isn't the most responsible knife defense to do.. like at all. In fact if you look over the stuff Ryan and Amber have talked about on their channel, its the opposite. Knife Defense is a tricky subject and this is dumb... but its pretty fun to think about, aye?
Thanks for watching!

“I hate to even say it cause it may sound like I’m endorsing this bullshit” yes please the world needs more of the four of you together.
Mike: "Here's the problem."
Then stabbing ferociously like a mad man. 😂
The real problem is, if someone who has any clue how to use a knife wants to stab you, they are going to hide the knife so you don't know they have it until they have already gotten close and stabbed you.
@@GLPitt1 in that case no knife defense will help you!
Good rule of thumb I have found vagabonding.. if they pull out a knife you are more then likely gonna get stabbed.. so you might as well try to land yours with enough force to get away or drop em.. the more i try to defend the more the body locks up in this awkward un practiced condition.. so the best you can do is try to smoke them in the head by making it an exchange instead of defense.. when u get stabbed you don't feel it immediately. -a guy with too many holes in his body (wing chun isn't too good for light combat like my tkd but it really helped with knive and striking when the person is striking instead of the block counter style.
@@tusanity Yes. Most likely is someone is close enough and wants to stab you, they will succeed. But doesn't mean you can't fight back. Probably best as you say to hit them fast, hit them hard, try to stun or incapacitate them and get away & seek medical attention.
@@GLPitt1 I got robed once like that. . .holding his hand just like in this video, but I was a kid and it was a syringe. :D
Mike’s face after witnessing that kick disarm was like a kid seeing a magic trick.

You actually CAN fight a knife using your legs. You just need to use both of them.
You turn 180º and run like your life depends on it. Because it does.

Hilarious going back to this after Mike actually kicked a knife out of a guy's hand in the second episode of Rokas' self defence tournament.
I've never seen someone who legitimately knows knife combatives hold a knife in that position even when performing a thrust. If you see the knife before the person attempts to use it, they are either psyching themselves up to potentially use it or they are wanting to intimidate.
Yup that's what they said in the video.
Do knife weilding hoodlums study kendo or philipino knife fighting tactics? Likely no.

As someone still recovering from a wrist injury, this was incredibly painful to watch.
I've done it exactly once. I lucked out, and grew up to realize how lucky I was that that actually worked and never plan to try that again. It was a crescent kick which in my young mind at the time took best advantage of the protection of a shoe.
Yeah, kicking the knife hand/wrist can definitely can work. People just need to understand that knife defenses are either moments of opportunity or last ditch reactions during a dynamic usually chaotic confrontation. You just don't run at a guy with a knife and try to grab it from him...unless you're REALLY fast.
You look exactly like the type of person that would make up that story lolll
@@lorincborbaszoltan ok
I did this once too, but with a marker not a knife and with a snap kick not a roundhouse. My friend and I were doing some knife sparring (with permenant marker for some extra incentive) and I just took the opportunity when I saw it. I hit right at the base of the handle with plenty of follow through and that marker went flying. now is it a good technique? No.
Isn't there a slight chance of missing the hand and kicking the actual knife, which depending on the angle of impact, could wind up stuck in your foot?
Well then it's in your foot, and out of their hand. That's a win, right there.
My understanding is that if you get into a knife you, you have to accept the inevitability that you're going to get cut.
Well, generally your feet will be the best protected parts of your body. Take an old shoe and try and stab it with a knife.
Then you just kickstab them with your new weapon; The Knifefoot.
“We know a thug. Or two because we’ve seen a thing or two, we are farmers bum ba bum bum bum bum bum.”
I first saw this from Shane on fight tips. I had training knives from a martial arts store and tried it on my friends without letting them know. 100% of the time they pulled their hand away
This was great, and Ryan Hoover is great!
Just sad that we didn't get to see the Sensei try and kick the knife out of the great mean Icicle Micicle.
Mike's look of terror as he realizes he's in the potential path of the knife is amazing.
in my experience, most people who have a knife for the intention of hurting someone never shows it to the person, they usually sneak attack with it. because if i see a knife im running, and looking for my own weapon.
Exactly!
Like your bottle tricks you’ve got to kick the knife up in the air out of the opponents hand and then kick the knife so it flies into them
I totally want to try to kick a knife out of someone's hand 😆 but on a serious note, this is a great video talking about disarms and managing an armed opponent 🤘
Short answer, yes it can work, because i've seen it work.
Difference is that it was in hard contact knife to knife sparring and what probably made it work is that the opponent is more focused on the knife hand than the kick so it's more of a surprise.
Having said that, still very hard to pull off against a trained and resisting opponent 😅
You also need to factor in the shoes. Kicking barefoot like they did here may not make such an impact. But kicking with steel toed shoes on will definitely hurt a lot more.
Krav-Maga guys be like: Wheres her shoe knife?
Where's her glock?
or wheres my bag.......lol if youve done krav u will know what im talkin about there lol
I think the absolute main factor in the equation is the moment of suprise. If he already has a light grip on the knife or isn't expecting anything at all as a defence you are already 100 times more likely to disarm that person
"This is healthy 😊"
*KICK!!!*
I love it. I keep coming back to watch that last kick. Keep it up, y'all 🤙
I love how much fun you and Mike have with your channels
The funniest part of coming back to this video is mike kicking a knife out of someones hand in the USDC
Man I love Mike's face when she kicked it out of your hand! Great vid, I'd love if you'd make more vids like this just to know if it works. Great stuff!
I mean, maybe... but probably not without sustaining damage.
Edit: Mike's reaction to "I think I have the solution" is priceless. He already knows what's coming.
awesome to see you astonished it can work. Best content out there!
firstly, the world needs more videos of you guys together. also, i recognise that this is probably a one in a million thing, but half a year ago some guy tried to attack me in an allyway with a long-ish knife/short tanto sword looking thing and i used a really strong teep kick to push him off balance. becos he happened to fall onto the knife and had to go to ER, i guess its more luck than anything at this point, but just my 2 cents.

Great video! Was thinking about this not long ago. Also you could use push kicks and foot work to keep distance which may set up a moment were you can kick it out of their hand.

I like how Mike successfully kicked a knife out of someone's hand in the usdc when going for a head kick
Nice video. One of my mantras is "Everything Works Everything Fails". That's a pretty good demo of a sub-optimal strategy that might occasionally work - would I recommend or teach it, nope, but it's almost always better to do something rather than nothing if you are being actively attacked.

I was just sitting here thinking 🤔 about the make up of the forearm, & realized someone is gonna get popped there.
Thank you for service, Sensei Seth.
But you guys pointing out the intentions of the knife wielder was crucial because someone using it for intimidation is different from someone with intent.

[You have to be on point at all times with that crew. Great video, love the way you all presented it.]
Beauty of karate is keeping your distance. Good advice in this instance
This video is a good demonstration of bladed weapon principles. The best knife fighters never reveal they have a knife until they're already too close to deal with. Also, in a blade duel, the concept of targeting and disabling your opponent's armed limbs (especially while the limb is coming at you), while keeping your attacking limbs constantly moving is super important. Being lazy, un-agile, and inactive are the worst traits for a blade martial artist.
"The best knife fighters never reveal they have a knife until they're already too close to deal with. "
If they have it concealed than it'd take a second for them to get the blade out. Which you can use to knock them tf out or take control of the hand they're reaching into their hoodie or whatever. Now of course this wouldn't work in a crowded place as you can't keep track of everyone, but what are the chance of someone attacking you in a crowded place?
Icy Mike's Expression when the knife is kicked is priceless
Of course you can! One of the scenario for a out to inside crescent kick, contact with the ball of the foot to the inside wrist area where the pressure point is. Same point as the one you press down on when doing a wrist lock. Grip will go . One of the basics taught to me in traditional karate……
Icy Mike will deny that the sky is blue. Great video.
this vid was too fun! you guys should try a rapier. y'all gotta do some shit with a nice 17th century cup hilt rapier.
I generally disarm with a pop snapu followed by a sailor moon hawkeye - it doesn’t actually work but I look dope af when I get stabbed.
This made me properly laugh no lols propers
Always liked Ryan's videos, discovered him before you, you should team up more often
this awesome. I've finally heard someone say something I've been thinking for sometime. There are the people who want to do you harm and those that want to intimidate you. Those that will stab or shoot you and those who are more interested in sticking it in your face. One you have a chance to defend against and those you don't. Odds aren't good , but one is better odds than the other.
I love how Icey Mike is just grinning like a kid in a toy store the whole time
I wish this video were longer!
the way mike starts laughing like he's having a nervous breakdown the moment you say "I think I can kick a knife out of your hand" coupled with the sudden creepy music that makes it sound like we're in a zombie film? cinema
I'm confused why Seth doesn't know that a hit to the forearm is a traditional karate knife defense! Usually applied with ridgehand a kick or wrist manipulation. It's usually used as a setup for a throw or a takedown to force the individual and the knife to face away rather than towards the clench or user
Probably could depend on where you hit, how you hit, when you hit and the speed and power, accuracy, flexibility if the knife is held really high or low, if they are holding the knife really tight with muscles tense or just regular, does the knife have a regular handle grip or does it have holes or loops where your fingers go through, element of surprise
I find it funny that Icy Mike literally did kick the knife out of someone's hand in a chaotic fight lol
Its crazy how martial arts make superheroes out of the human body with intensive training. Motivates me everyday
Master can you make a vedio about how to defence against stick attack .
Didn't get the ad when you said last video but this time it started when you clapped hahaha
More years ago than I care to think we were shown to kick the outside of the arm with the heel just behind the elbow joint, it was though stressed that it was best to do it as soon after the knife is pulled out as possible
There is a reference to kicking a knife out of someone's hand in the 1674 book "Clear Education in the Magnificent Art of Wrestling" by Nickolaes Petter. It mentions that this is done with the tip of the toe into the wrist of the knife hand. There is probably more to it, but it has been a while since I read it.
In Jun Fan kickboxing we do crescent kicks for this specific reason. Just in case your hands were tied up or you had handcuffs on and someone was coming at you with a knife or weapon…you can defend yourself as if you weren’t
I’m definitely trying this
The exhaust port on the Death Star lol
I am here from the future. it is funny and ironic how Mike himself used a kick to disarm an attacker who had a knife 😂
Definitely possible, as I've seen it work with my own eyes with a screwdriver, but it's a risk vs reward sort of thing. It's a high risk, and if it works, you disarm him, but if something goes wrong, you can get your foot shanked, or it may just piss him off, or now you lose the element of surprise.
Great vidro
I've done it 3 times. Living in NYC in the 90s was crazy.
That was Iike... Science! Neat stuff lol
I came here from the future, there's a series of videos called the Self defense championship where in chapter 2 Icymike actually kicked a knife out of someone's hand lol
Damn! I thought it wouldn't be possible but Amber proved me wrong!
I've seen done on the street two times but it was done at long range as soon as the knife came out to view
I like to know what kali and/ or silat guys think about knive defence not working, I study under one right now. His answer was depending on the situation but like to know what other teachers think?
I clicked on this not even knowing whose channel and I immediately thought I should tag Sensai Seth to do something like this, well Low and Behold! Don't have to
I think it's important to consider whether the person with the knife is attacking you or threatening you. If you're already under attack, even a great fighter probably can't kick it reliably, but if it's just being held in front of you to threaten you, that's a different story. Seems risky though, because from that position, it takes less time to pull the knife back, or pull the trigger on your gun, then it takes to fire off a kick, and if the kick fails to disarm then you're in trouble.
👍😯 good kick!
2:17 in and I'm just killing myself over Icy Mike just chilling on the cabinet.
