[HUAWEI P50 POCKET REVIEW]
If you haven’t noticed, foldables are finally happening. The past year has seen Samsung’s dominant Galaxy Fold family challenged by Huawei; Xiaomi; Honor and Oppo. Even Microsoft has recently gained ground with its Surface Duo 2, whose updates have rendered it much more palatable as a dual-screen device.
But maybe you noticed the pattern there: all those are full-format book-style foldables. For those who also enjoy the more petite flavor - the clamshell flip phone - well, it’s mostly been The Samsung Show. Motorola has fallen behind since kicking off the category in 2019, and a would-be clamshell competitor from TCL was canceled before reaching production.
So: the P50 Pocket was destined to make a splash no matter which manufacturer made it. And as it happens, it hails from a company whose beleaguered business condition has done nothing to blunt its hardware engineering prowess. I’m Michael Fisher and I’ve spent two weeks with the first flip phone from Huawei: the P50 Pocket!

Never get rid of the disclaimer! Transparency is everything 👍
Koun si class me ho bhai
If transparency is everything, support the creator in monetary ways.
Ultimately, it would be good if some kind of uniform standards were adopted, something like the society of professional journalist but for RUclips tech reviewers.
I will be transparent. I think you are stupid if you are expecting transparency from any RUclipsr.
@@RideWithTechie it’s their choice to make, the creator makes money in other ways.
Never has a phone's design immediately made me think of an art deco pocket cigarette case more than this design. I just see a middle aged woman with old aged wrinkles popping it open for a quick drag after not getting her way and needing to contemplate her life.
Huawei really ought to get you to do their advertising. This is exactly what the design says
@@alihart agreed it's honestly a thing of beauty 😁 if there's one thing Huawei knows it's how to design a phone that looks stunning 😁
Yeah it does look like a cigarette case. Hmm
Yuck, I wont have my phone look like a cigarette case at all...
😁😂
That's a great looking phone, I hope more companies keep trying foldables so that Samsung don't get complacent.
Another excellent review, thanks!
We have a fine pink and gold Cadillac you will be very interested in
Agreed; competition is good!
@@kavorkaa thank you, thank you very much

Samsung has the worst type, especially with a crease
Honestly, rather than wishing huawei were allowed to ship with google services. We should wish for app developers to be free to do their own background servicing, push messaging, credential storaging, etc, with a common open framework that could work universally across all Android/AOSP devices.
Thankfully someone said it. This should have been a wakeup call for everyone relying on GMS but instead of that everyone is crying "muh Google"
yes, that would be the best & ultimate solution to Huawei's current problems.
I own several Huawei products as well as Mac but I have found Huawei's ECO system integration by far the best when looking towards the future
As much as I hate monopolies, that's a terrible idea by suggesting each dev embraces a lack of regulation and subsequently no ubiqutous standard to adhere to- due to the sheer variety of devs and apps out there which cery likely would not be held to the same standard from one dev to the other. Multiple quality and security questions immediately come to mind with this and in general would be more detrimental for consumers than positive. Ultimately the platform remains the same to establish a baseline minimum of what to expect and with Google in the picture as a platform that enforces that regulation, besides just allowing access to their Google services.
@@Waters-fo6rn backdoors are the whole reason Huawei are in this situation.
@@miko-ee there's no conjecture, the Chinese government have legislation stating that that Huawei must hand over data if requested. Obviously they would deny this, but this is in stark contrast to Apple who have notoriously fought this and the FBI while reiterating their focus on privacy around data, Samsung too with their various security measures such as knox. A risk is still a risk at the end of the day and the pressure is on Huawei to prove otherwise, not just deny claims and valid concerns.
Once again, this review shows why I love MrMobile reviews so much! Every review is full of brilliant narration and genuine love, and it provides a sense of authenticity that you don't get from other reviewers.
The UV light camera is such an interesting feature. I hope we get some cool stuff like that going forward!
It reminds me of the infrared camera on my OnePlus 8 Pro. Still loving that feature
That really is a real game changer.

I wish other mobile companies would do cool designs like this on the outer shells. It's interesting and unexpected.
I was waiting for your review. FINALLY thanx 👍❤
The perfect man for the job! Just the review I was waiting to see! Great job, bro!
This is the first phone that reminds me of the fun and distinctly different phone designs of the 2000s and I love it. Hope we see more of that in the future.
my man goes "don't take pictures of yourself" then proceeds to scar every viewer for life with the most cursed pictures imaginable
It’s exciting to see another flip smartphone! I hope this gets more interest in the smart flip category and brings more diversity to smart phones. #bring back fun flip phones.
Oh man. This reminds me of the Samsung A300 (I think) back in the very early 00s when a screen on the outside of the flip was the new thing not just on the inside. There was sooooo much design innovation back then that Huawei is making me excited for some propper mobile phone differentiation and choice..... Maybe phones will be fun again!!!
Great review as always. This phone’s style reminds me of those old Nokia 7000 fashion series, gorgeous devices with questionable practicality. And this one without google is quite the same, which is a shame because it’s gorgeous has nice specs and takes very decent photos.
A MrMobile video is always a special event
Genuinely what I first thought when I saw that circular external display was: Are they somehow running Wear OS AS WELL???? Because essentially having a smartwatch on the outside would be perfect for it!
Running WearOS would likely require a second set of hardware that would already barely fit in a space constrained phone such as this. That's not to say they aren't benefiting from it, since both are Linux, but this would have to just be telling Android its a second screen.
@Carl Gunderson you mean eat way more battery for a feature thats not really that needed and could "deter" people from buying a smart watch?
Sounds like a bad move
That hasn't any sence at all. Wear OS is owned by Google such as Android and the GMS applications. Huawei is so bad >because< they are banned from Google.
And oh, yes the latest WearOS 3.1 is also co. developed by Samsung, so buy a Galaxy Watch4 at a good price when you will get the best smartwatch available.
Here it is, watch this instead:
ruclips.net/video/9zfbtyJwFPg/видео.html
@Carl Gunderson yeah, honor can use GMS, nad thats not good. They say that Honor abd Huawei are two different conpanies. But they really aren't. This isn't even possible.
HarmonyOS is a heavily remodified version of the open source android version. That version of Android and WearOS have not much in common.
Hmm. Mr 2Phones, you are directly responsible for me having, and still using, the P20 Pro, as well as the Lumia 1020 and Note 4 (which I don't now use 😊). I've never been able to see the attraction of foldables and this great review hasn't changed that. Great review was usual 👍
I have a friend that still uses the note 4 with an extended battery although the battery started giving problems so he needs to change it, which isn't hard.
I was more partial to the Nokia Lumia 1520 I put a 10 20 but I loved its overall design and I agree with you I'm just not that interested in foldables.
I'm always excited for a new Mr.Mobile video 🤙🏻 finally catching up after a stretch of work nights
I loved that your Swiss Knife also has a Sim Ejector tool because everytime I need to open the tray I've to first find the box 😫
You really nailed it mentioning Huawei's OS shutting down background services... I had a P9 for 4 years and that was terrible. I even made my own "services monitor" just to monitor which background services EMUI closed at random. And after just a couple of years my battery didn't last half a day despite of that. The OS was slick and refined, but that always was a dealbreaker.
The timing and use of that particular lyric by The Magnetic Fields actually had me cracking up. Bravo.
I had my moto razr 5G for almost 2 years now. I haven't started looking too deep into other upgrades, but I'm pretty sure I'm going back to candy bar phones. I've greatly enjoyed the clamshell form factor, and the usability of the large external display; however the already low capacity battery hasn't aged well. Also the internal display screen material has begun flaking off?? I'm hoping Samsung teases a foldable closer to the moto 5G but with better battery, more case options, and a screen protector that doesn't void the warranty.
Oof, that display flaking sounds rough. Hasn't happened to mine - would you be open to sharing a photo or two? If that would work, email is in the About tab.
That is a lovely phone. The round screen and textured silver body kind of remind me of the Motorola Aura you featured in a "When Phones were Fun" video a while back.
Fantastic video, so much passion and dedication 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I love the design, look and fold.
The almost double the cost (the zflip3 is often on good sale) sadly pushes this well out of contention, even if it had good avalibility.
I love the look and feel of the razr 5G but it is aging now, glad someone is pushing Samsung in the clamshell space. It is a strong first release.
Why all of his reviews are so amazing!!!!!!!
i love your vids aspect ratio. ideal to watch when bein mobile nowadays
8:07 How to get GSpace scrolling app drawer space? Mine is stuck into 9 apps per page and half of the app drawer space is empty
Great review as always! Cheers from Taiwan
Interesting - I didn't know Evernote needed Google services.
Great review. I understand the Surface Duo use cases better than these foldable but yes, interesting hardware.
Some apps use GMS not because they need them to function, but because Google offers "Cloud messaging" or in other words they use Google to send notifications, then we have other Apps like Cod Mobile, Pokémon United and WildRift which need GMS for their stores but at the end of the day you can still use them, I play Cod Mobile and Pokémon United on my Y8P/Enjoy 10S/PSmartS and the only thing I can't access is the store... They'll be handicapped but they'll work.
Always stoked to get a notification for a MrMobile video, never disappointed!
Thank you for the review Michael
Finally!!! Been waiting for your review of this phone since you mentioned on SuperSaf that know your daily driver is the flip. 🧡🧡
Thanks for continuing to review Huawei! Hope you will review the upcoming Mate 50
I have a collection of modelkits and some of their parts are UV reactive. I think they would probably look extra crisp with florescence mode on.
I feel the quality of your videos are criminally UNDERRATED! TOP NOTCH! You should have 10x the subs!
Gotta shout out the awesome song choice to spice up that point about the design
1:54 That is a work of art, Mr Fisher!
Hair looks great Mr mobile!
You never disappoint 👍
One of the only reviewers that reviews phones in a realistic manner.
Non of those systematic, abusive style of reviews that most people, even those who play games on their phone would even want to push it through.
Just answering the question "Is this a phone that I would want to buy?"
I just want to say that you videos are full of charisma, they have some character that I very much like. They somehow make me feel nostalgic 🤷 big thumbs up!
May I ask if the P50 Pocket's camera still retain the useful "Light Painting" modes that were previously avail on the P40 & P30?
Great content as ever. When is the next "When phones were fun" please?
That spooky photo of your face had me laughing for minutes😂
Same, lol
Amazing video!! Thanks
awesome video, love how you tell it as it is! i really hope Huawei gets google services back soon, i loved my p20 pro, mate20 pro, and p30 pro.. but all the apps i need (ESPECIALLY banking apps) just arent there on new devices :( once they get google back i can ditch my Samsung :D
I won't buy another phone until they get Google services back. My P30 Pro is still going hard..
Awesome review Michael, maybe you can try microG, it's a free and open source replacement for Google services.
Huawei was destined to be the #1 cell phone until it didn't get GMS. That's sad. 😔
I got kind of enamored with foldables and when Tmobile put the Razr 5g on sale for $499, I got one. Between it feeling so fragile I was constantly worried about breaking it, and the fact that other than being foldable it's not really that great of a phone, within like a month I had switched back to using my Pixel.
Yes, that fragile feeling is nerve-wracking. I've played around with the Huawei Mate X and the motorola flip (the one from 2019) and that spongy feeling brings back those horrible resistive touch smartphones that would get scratched very quickly. The price for me is a no-brainer, considering the durability and the way you may have to pamper it.
@@HeX341 Who cares about that as long as the foldable screen is on the inside of the phone though. When the phone is closed and in your pocket the fragile inner screen is completely protected. I honestly don't understand why people are so worried about a screen that's only exposed when you're using the phone. I have a fold 3 and scratches on the inner screen a total non-issue because of the design of the phone.
@@HeX341UTG glass displays feel NOTHING like what you are describing with those early plastic screen phones. They feel like any other glass display under the finger. That's literally the main reason UTG was invented in the first place.
Amazing video as always
Love your Communications Badge snack bowl, Michael!
I'd love to see someone make one of these with a useable front display. Do that and I'm in
Now That's a "Review" AWESOME as Always 👍
As always great review 👍 fold is future
As much as I hate center crease on my fold 3, I love what it does to set the screen on whatever angle I want. It is so convenient to watch youtube or adjust angle to take a timelapse video. I literally don't need a ketchup bottle to make the screen stand to watch videos or hold the phone for 30 minutes to record my daughter playing a musical instrument for the concert. I will never go back to other phones.
Have you tried it with microg services
*That series of "If's" is unfortunate, but honest (as always), so thank you!* @9:36
You can install the Google services with a couple APKs. They're signed by Google as well.
Great video as always. Lovely phone and such a shame the way things have gone with Huawei. I loved the Mate 20 Pro and the P30 pro, and tried hard to get on with the P40 pro, but the lack of Google services were just too much in the end. Every time I got one to work another would fail and it just got annoying
bruh just install the apks its not that hard
@NithPro you can't- you need to flash something like open apps, which is much more complicated or impossible, especially since Huawei have locked bootloaders.
Yep, maybe if they were less expensive it would be better and you'd think: "Ok so I have to do this myself but at least it's cheaper". But they aren't cheaper lol
Their treatment is thoroughly deserved though.
My Mate 20 Pro just died..until Huawei will get back to Google, I'll go for medium A series of Samsung. Nothing can match Huawei with Google
absolutely beautify phone, can't wait to get one. great video also.
Great video again!
I love Niagara launcher! Glad to see it get some love.
My favorite foldable design is still the Moto Razr 5G.
Too bad it's a piece of shit that has shit specs and is over priced.
@@phodacbitch That's why I said design, and you can pick it up right now new for $499.00 which isn't really overpriced anymore. But when it came out, I agree, it was horribly overpriced. I don't own one so I'm not trying to stick-up for it or anything like that. I just like the design the best out of the foldable's.
@@phodacbitch so was the original RAZR V3 and it sold like hotcakes back then due to its design alone
@@bp328i Yes, especially the external display and the contours. I do not like the chin and the camera design though. I get that they tried to emulate the OG Razr chin, but it doesn't work for a smartphone imo.
I'm with ya. I wanted a new razr quite a bit. But it never had wireless charging so it was an auto no deal for me. Besides the other issues of course.
That design is awesome
Hope the issues are sorted some day and they can ship normal Android
I don't get how a dual sim makes up for no 5G? Like allyou are doing is switching what company you are using the tower with.
So I swear, I just saw a video on harassment where Mr. Mobile was in it! I can't believe what I'm seeing. Was quite the experience.
6:25
You look like Spencer Charnas from INK in this shot
I remember going to a Huawei store in SM Bacolod and found one of those phones. First time actually Folding a phone.😊
its a beautiful design. the flip is nice also. im waiting on the razr 3. moto is bringing the heat
Mr. Mobile can you make a full review on Huawei P50 Pro, including a comparison with it's competitors please? That would be awesome.
Lovely video. 👍🏽
That was a well made sponsor spot 👌I wonder if watching ads at 2x speed instead of skipping gives something to the author
What is the folding phone at 27 seconds?
The case pattern is fascinating! It gives me sexy sci-fi/space opera tech. Like I could see Padmé rock this phone.
How did you make those 3x3 folders on your homescreen, which are even clickable?
I am here trying to buy a phone and nothing is really getting me love the p50 pro but I've pretty much had the p40 and there is more updates. What would you recommend for a info tech who only uses RUclips and WhatsApp and i do use the camera for nature photos
Interesting and unique outside design (that texture and camera module). But I think even if it had Google services it still wouldn't be a good buy. UV camera is cool for a second but no one would use it, so it's a waste of space and effort. The hinge that stays open at an angle is important in my opinion, especially for Flip style. Besides that there's no IP rating, the price is also a lot higher than the Z Flip3. And there's also no UTG but I don't know if that's a bad or good thing because some of the Z Flip units have had cracks in the screen.
Why you didn't test the front facing camera?
6:12 Awesome shot
Im using the Huawei mate 40 Pro and there is hardly any decent videos explaining if it's worth an upgrade to the Huawei p50 Pro , help us out
How did this phone work on At&t if it isn't whitelisted on their network?
This is the most beautiful phone ever created. This art deco mood is absolutely mindblowing
So it has a Spunk filter for the camera app??
6:06 Is that an Enterprise B? As in, my favourite Enterprise that really didn’t get enough love? Good taste!
Yes, I'm using huawei mate 30 pro for sometime now. But not as primary phone of course. It sad though, without Google services, those good hardware and OS is becoming redundant. It's like having a good performance car. But you're stuck at 2/3rd gear.....
it's possible to use Google services organically without using gspace or anything, but you've just gotta try hard enough to learn/pay someone to do the xda for you.
Really beautiful.
It just excites me at what samsung will do next to me personally the z flip 3 is perfect I creease and all I just need better battery life give me that and I would happily daily it for years to come
So, with AT&T's whitelist as the result of them shutting down their 3G network, did you have any issues getting your AT&T SIM to work? If so, what did you need to do to get it working?
Is this and the pocket S the same phone ?
Best tech videos on youtube.
I prefer the much cleaner look of the flip to this P50 pocket design. Either ways it still looks beautiful but definitely not for me.
If you can root it an install microG maybe that's a way to use google services on this. Can you unlock the bootloader on this phone ?
I mean, it'll take no time at all before a custom rom or root in general adds Google framework functionality... I get that's not enough for the average Joe but I feel like it should have been mentioned
Until Huawei can get Google Play Services it won't be able to compete with Samsung or Apple.
the uv camera would show off best on flowers as the pollen would be neon like
Is using the Calyx OS a work around solution to the Huawei,s Google problem ? If that's still a thing anyway , the OS I mean we damn that pixel only right now is it not ?
Magnetic Fields - I don’t believe you. Great track!
