    Man I miss Monoblos so much, I find his design and lore alot more interesting than Diablos, the term "Proof of a Hero" has its origin in Monoblos with Kokoto chief before the guild was established managed to slay a monoblos on his own and nowadays Hunters try to replicate it and solo a monoblos inorder to proof themselves a hero. So in short Monoblos has been done dirty for how important and meaningful it is

      The thing is Diablos have become 'too famous' that if they try to removed Diablos, some fans will complain. Yet the 2 way too similar, both have a more brute-style fighting method, both have not only the same skeleton, but also identical design, both even inhabits the same sandy or desert habitat and have the same cactus-based diet, so there's a risk of 'redundancy'.
      Unless if they wanna make them both have a complete different traits aside from the amount of horns

    This is the same basic problem that fighting games run into with long running series and iconic characters. Fans scream that they're bored of the same characters over and over.
    Then those same fighting games do a 'new generation' release. And almost ALL of them stumble and fall. People don't end up getting attached to a whole new cast when the oldie goldies aren't around.
    That's why pushing a few new 'characters' along side a stable of popular returners became the norm. It's what most fighting games do. It's what MH does too.

    • @frostdragonheart2500
      @frostdragonheart2500 2 года назад +49

      That's a good way to look at it. Personally I just never get tired of the flagships, they're all so good!

    • @bok4822
      @bok4822 2 года назад +16

      I feel the same way. However, having too huge of a roster appearing in every single game will make that roster eventually go stale. Rathian and Rathalos are fine to have in every single game, they have always told me that "yes, this is indeed MH". Swapping the other monsters out for new ones should happen soon though. When meeting the same 10 monsters in every single game, they will go stale from lack of variation.

    • @Yoshihara72
      @Yoshihara72 2 года назад +9

      While this is a great lesson indeed, I'd argue that it's not exactly applicable in this situation.
      In fighting games, the characters are controlled by the player. Removing a playable character from a fighting game is the equivalent of removing a weapon in Monster Hunter. Yes, the game is still playable, but if you main only one specific character, this will heavily impact the player. And depending on the player and your options, you might not be able to properly enjoy the game anymore.
      Compared to that, having a monster or removing one is more comparable to removing a track in mario kart. Baby Park is peak Mario Kart track design, but I can still absolutely enjoy any mario kart games that don't have baby park in it.

    • @Yoshihara72
      @Yoshihara72 2 года назад +6

      @@blastimbre Well, personally I do feel it to be very similiar. In Monster Hunter specifically, fighting different Monsters changes how you approach the combat. You can go more aggressive, or might need to be more methodically and patient, depending on the monsters moveset. This is also very similiar to how different tracks in racing games work. Baby Park is very simple in it's track design (cant get any more simple than that), but very chaotic when it comes to item usage. In this map, your driving performance isn't as important as your awareness of your surrounding and item usage (no matter how much of a lead you have as the first place, you still have to deal with other people using stars, bullets and the like). On the other hand, Cloudtop Cruise will require much more of your driving skills to dodge the traps and exploit the various shortcuts and benefits the map has to offer.
      The monsters in Monster Hunter Games have a similiar effect to the player. A Rakna-Kadaki serves mostly as a punching bag (at least to me), so I can go all out with performing great combos and maximizing my damage output, but then comes an Apex Zinogre (electro doggo on crack) and I'm forced to adapt more of a hit-and-run playstyle.
      Wether or not you do agree with that comparison though won't change my initial point I tried to make: Removing playable characters in a Fighting game is definitely not the same (gameplay wise at least) to removing Monsters in a Monster Hunter game.
      But if you do have a better comparison/example regarding the monsters (and Mario Kart tracks), feel freel to share it with me :D
      Edit: I would like to mention that, for me at least, having a track I do love in a new Mario Kart track is similiar to fighting an older Monster in a newer Monster Hunter game. Yes, there are different nuances, but the idea is mostly the same.

    • @xenostra
      @xenostra 2 года назад

    My main issue with constantly reusing flagships is that they eat into design space that could be filled with a new new, more interesting monster. As much as I like chameleos, his absence in world led to the creation of vaal hazak, which while not one of my favorite designs, is something new that we hadn't really seen before

      I always thought MHGU hammered to death the idea that there are an arbitrary amount of monsters slots.

      @camil3545 2 года назад +14

      @@JoelHernandez-tz3vk Well it probably also has to do with carry-over, since older games could get away with porting monsters from previous games over with only some touch-ups, it wouldn't be as developer intensive to keep bringing back old monsters while still making new ones. it is more of an issue when making a bigger generational leap like with World where the jump in visual fidelity and changes to the game engine that would require a lot more work to bring back older monsters.

    I liked what tri did cause it did kinda reset the board and introduce a ton new cool monsters that would become iconic later on.
    The fact tha now every new monster hunter feels like it HAS to carry over like already 10 or 15 monsters from previous games really hinders its potential and struggles more to make the new flagships as memorable cause they always have to compete with the older ones

      tri did good but I do think it shaved the board a little 'too' much, if I recall there were only 18 big monsters with no variants, and with a bunch of weapons being cut (Gunlance, Dual Blades, Hunting Horn, Bow and longsword only being available 'after' you've beaten Lagi) it made the game feel kind of barebones, the aditions made in portable and Ultimate both combated this though.

    I have to say, I feel this a lot with the Gen 2 elder dragon trio. 4U was the first game I played with them in it, since I started the series with Tri, but MAN did 4U leave me feeling burned out on them with how many things needed large elder dragon gems for their final upgrade. And then at least two of the three have been part of the end game for every monster hunter since then. I like what Rise did with their fights, but even then I'm still kind of feeling the burnout from fighting them in so many games. I would genuinely be thrilled if the next Monster Hunter had fewer elder dragons in general, and rounded out its endgame with more rare subspecies of non-elders. There's a lot of really fun low-tier and mid-tier monsters that I would love to fight end-game versions of. I would genuinely have the time of my life if one of the hardest fights in a Monster Hunter game was some god-tier Great Jaggi subspecies. Give me a Great Jaggi rare subspecies that kicks my 24 year old, veteran hunter ass even more than the Tri demo disk Great Jaggi kicked my 12 year old noob ass.

      I share the same sentiment. I also started in tri and grinded out the endgame of mh4u, you needed elder dragon gems for literally everything and I got tired of them fast. Apex system made them even less bearable in mh4u, then in mhgen there were so many monsters to the point where I didn't have to farm them. Then came MHW and Kushala and teostra were back. again. I'm still playing Iceborne right now, but the amount of kushala and teostra hunted are almost the bare minimum I needed for armor. I'll do everything I can to not have to fight kushala again. Then the duo (because the most fun fight got taken out of games) appeared in mhrise. again. I'm getting real tired of them. Not only are they prominent, but they almost can't be ignored because elder dragons are such a big part of the endgame.

Having purple sharpness, decent slots, and high crit were well worth the tradeoff for a lil less in raw attack. Plus having purple sharpness and high crit could easily make up the difference in power. Also they eliminated the "need" for handicraft, often a very difficult skill to get. Problem is, narga and steve weapons have a setup that makes them extremely reliable. With good positive crit rate and slots, the weapons are already good, but purple sharpness is the icing on the cake, especially since its one of the most coveted things to have on a weapon because of its modifiers. They would either need to either nerf the weapons, create even more reliable weapons with even more broken stats, or alternatively they could either adjust the current monsters defenses against raw damage or bring in new ones more resistant to it. Make them more susceptable to element damage. That could change things abit if done right. Now there are skills that can and will help other weapons combat and even excel narga and steve weapons in power and usefulness, problem is those weapons often need certain skills allocated to start getting the same result or better, such as having purple sharpness, good crit rate, meanwhile nargas and steve have all of that basic goodness built in, so they can focus on other skills to boost damage output instead. Such as crit boost and tenderizer. A constant uptime of 140% crit damage increase every hit instead of 125% is broken

    Not a flagship but still a monster I think is worth mentioning is Deviljho. He's been an iconic monsters since his introduction in Tri, serving as one of the main invader monsters that can appear in your quest at any given time. Since his appearance in Tri, Deviljho had been a mainstay of the franchise, appearing in every single mainline game until getting cut from the roster in Rise. On top of that, he has his variant, the Savage Deviljho which appeared in 3U, 4, 4U, Gens, GU, and IB.
    That being said, do I think he had overstayed his welcome? Not at all, because that's the point. The first lesson I taught my one friend when he first reached High Rank in 3U is to "always prepare for Deviljho," and that rule had stayed relevant ever since. Frankly, I'm disappointed his perfect attendance streak has ended with Rise. He could have been an actual invader as opposed to Rajang who mostly just sleeps when he's in a quest.

    I think a good mix would be good. Have a the starting roster of a new game be mostly new monster. Then you can roll out some of the old monsters in patches and make them more than cannon fodder. I like seeing old monsters but there is also a large list of beloved monsters that don't get to see the light of day!
    Also I agree on giving rathian and rathalos a pass. Although I'd be fine if they left out the variants. Although dreadking/queen are really neat so they can have some more love 🤣

    I'd say the problem is more so that when a new MonHun is on the horizon you get all these posts begging for previous monsters to return instead of adding new monsters. Would be more interesting to see which mon hun has the most new monsters and sub monsters.

    While I think Rathalos/Rathian are fine for the same reason Pikachu is fine for Pokémon, I feel re-using the old monsters is fine so long as there's some sort of new touch to a familiar face - Such as a new variant with lore as to why the monster is that way. I place more value into innovating honestly, so creating new monsters relative to the environment (Vaal Hazaak was a perfect example of this and paired with the Veil perfectly). Introducing side quests with nostalgia hits is also nice IMO so long as they're not over-done either. Fatalis appearing at Castle Schrade in IB for instance was great, and to see either white or crimson appear in a later game is something I could get behind.

    Here’s my list of monsters I would love to fight and get armour of in the new/future games:
    Rathalos’s fate is to be in every single game and I’m not gonna fight that. (This is the only exception. Oh and Rathians.)
    We keep getting Khezu but no Gigginox? Why? I never got the game that has it and I would like to fight that since Khezu always comes back. So why not? and I would like to see the new people/players experience the Gigginox as well. I want to see people’s reaction to it.
    I would like to fight Rust Kushala (idc about the normal Kushala. I never got the chance to fight rust Kushala)
    Lunastra. Even though she was super annoying and rage inducing in world/Iceborne, for some reason I wouldn’t mind seeing her again.
    Molten Tigrex and Grimclaw together would be cool to have. I don’t want or care about normal Tigrex since I’ve fought it so many times. I’ve only fought Molten once in 4U and it was too hard for me in that game with the clunky old controls. I Never got to fight Grimclaw and I didn’t want to with the slower controls in the older games.
    I would absolutely love to fight lucent Nargacuga. I never got 3U so it’s a brand new monster to me. I would also like to fight silver and green Nargacuga together in the same game. The only experience I’ve had fighting or using green nargacuga was in the monster hunter stories games and I would like to experience it in a game that isn’t a spin off.
    I don’t care about the Barioths but I wouldn’t mind taking on the sand barioth since that one feels less loved in general.
    I would like to fight all the Laggi’s (Lagiacrus’s). Especially the Abyssal one I have never got to experience fighting that one. Ivory is too op in the monster hunter stories games and lots of people used it because of that. So I’m not too fond of ivory because it was so overused in those games. But I’m up to experience it in an non spin off game.
    I am tired and bored of Zinogre. It’s my friends favourite monster which is fine and all but I’m getting sick and tired of having to get its armour for my friend in every single game or see them always have it. They always have to get its armour because they love it too much and it’s just tedious, boring, predictable and too repetitive. I would like to see and help my friend try to get some new armour instead of the same shit over and over again.
    I’m not annoyed of Brachy yet (Brachydios)
    Gore Magala was and still is my favourite monster of all time and I miss it. My first ever Monster Hunter game I got was 4 or 4U and it was really cool in those games. They didn’t put it in the first Monter Hunter Stories game even though the game had Gore Magalas frenzy virus mechanic thing in it, which was disappointing. Then years later they announced the second Monster Hunter Stories game and again they didn’t put it in that game either. It really sucks because I would of loved to have had a buddy Gore Magala to fight with in those games. I never got to fight Chaotic Gore Magala so I would really like to experience that.
    Idc about normal and Acidic Glavenus since I’ve fought those two so much in World/Iceborne. Hellblade though I only fought once or twice and never got to really try and get its armour or weapons so I would like to try and do that in a new game.
    I’m satisfied with Mizutsune and I feel like it’s got enough love for now and I wouldn’t be upset if that one took a break from being in a couple of games.
    I’ve fought normal Astalos enough. I didn’t get to really experience the boltreaver astalos so I would like to fight that one some more.
    I’ve never cared about Gammoth and I still don’t care about that one.
    I would love to fight Valstrax especially its other forms or new future forms. I was really hoping it was gonna get put in Iceborne to experience it in that game but that didn’t happen.
    I don’t care about the Diablos’s and wouldn’t miss it if it got replaced by all the Monoblos’s for a game or two. I think there is a white Diablos (not sure) if there is a white Diablos I would like to fight that one since i haven’t experienced the white one.
    Nergi (Nergigante) was cool but I don’t miss it. I don’t care about Velkhana and I’ve had enough of fighting Velkhana in World/Iceborne. I wouldn’t mind if Magnamalo stayed as a Rise exclusive monster.
    There’s a lot of really cool monsters that have been left behind and forgotten in Monster Hunter Online and I don’t understand why they don’t bring those monsters into the main games. What’s the point of getting the new games if most of the monsters they put in are ones we’ve already fought and experienced in the previous game or have fought so many times in the recent past games? It’s just repetitive predictable slaps of copy and pasting with just new maps and mechanics. Pokémon is just as bad but at least they try to add multiple new monsters for every new generation to spice things up, instead of the monster roster being 70-90% the same every game.

      - I would also LOVE to see Gigginox, Lagi, Rust Kushy would be cool, Sand barioth (I hope he is in Sunbreak because we literally have Sandy Plains), Molten, lucent, Gore.
      There isn't a white diablos, but there is a white Mononblos which would be neat to see again.
      Lastly, the reason Capcom has not brought over stuff from MHOnline is because the game wasn't actually developed by Capcom. MHOnline was developed by Tencent Games and backed by Capcom.

    The problem with the Magalas is its story/lore significance. I would love for it to make a return, but it needs to be significant in the story as well, without stealing the spotlight from the main game's flagship. It's impact is in a much larger scale, infecting monsters with the frenzy virus. If it ever does return, it would need to be a big event for it to actually shine.

    • @Andyjoe522

      I've been of the mind that when the Magalas do return, it should be as the stars of a title update. It would be an event that would take place after the game's main story, so no need to worry about overshadowing the new flagship and final boss elder dragon. You could throw in frenzied versions of a handful of monsters as build-up to fighting them.

    I really liked World’s approach to introducing new monsters in the base game, then bringing back fan favorites in the expansion. It really gave the new monsters room to breathe and become iconic in their own right. I consider Odogaron, Anjanath, and Bazelgeuse to be “pseudo-flagships” because of their prevalence in the game and the fact that they got carried over (except Odogaron) to the next game. I can’t think of any particularly memorable new monsters in Rise. I’ve heard that Goss Harag sort of fills that role, but the dev team clearly didn’t think so because he didn’t get a new form in Sunbreak. I was personally more excited to see Zinogre, Mizutsune, and Rajang than any of the new monsters, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to force them to compete with old fan favorites right off launch.

It's not like pokemon where they add 150 every damn generation either so there's no reason outside of maybe development time/budget why they can't.

  • @melleamushroom

    I think the flagships are prevalent partly because they teach all those new players something. Nargacuga and Seregios teach hunters to stay on their feet at all times, Tigrex to a greater extent and Barioth to a lesser one. Zinogre, Gore, Magnamalo, and Brachy teach the player how to adapt to new, powerful foes, like how Brachy's punching adds new layers to the fight or Zinogre's flips and Gore's staggered swipes create chaos. The Raths teach them to... make flash bombs; all jokes aside, they are a rewarding challenge for all quest ranks. Those that return do so because they provide valuable lessons to those new players and, if lucky, teach old ones to adapt to a new environment like SunRise (though Zinogre is really getting boring).

    I have two things to say about this:
    1) I like seeing flagships because they are the most memorable. In their respective games, they are often a monster that brings a specific challenge unique to that monster. Due to this uniqueness, seeing flagships come back as late game heavy hitters is something that I appreciate. It makes sense that flagships are revered.
    2) There IS a case to be made that focusing on using flagships shifts time and resources away from creating NEW monsters for the roster. The problem is that can also be said about ANY returning monsters.

      magnamalo's neutral design is ok, I only have one issue with the neutral state (the fukin natural formed, American football player shoulder pads). I despise the super states design tho.
      Glav and Brachy have overall pretty basic armored brute wyvern designs, with some special flairs. I don't love brach's horn, or glav's tail blade. But they can be overlooked because the rest of the design is pretty solid.
      Astalos has a pretty basic wyvern's carapace, with an insecty flair with his wings and legs.
      Zinogre for the most part is ok. He really didn't need the double chin spikes, or the insane amounts of spikes. But he feels very tame in comparison to magnamalo.
      I love Magnamalo's lore, but the design isn't great, the concept art had significantly better designs.
      But what was truly atrocious, was how he actually used his copy paste turf war on BAZEL!? Bazel is immune to explosions, how the heck did the final hit do any damage! That turf war absolutely sucks.

      @@jonah_the_Nakarkos_admirer tbh i have no problem with glav, barchy, and zino (astolos being my favorite monster) and I really like magnamalos design but I do agree on that spikey crap the purple hell fire was cool idk why they added that and ya i would like to see better turf wars for him the flying wyvern copy paste battle are really bad

      i like your list. i wish most flagships stayed in their games and could make reappearances in spin offs/celebration tittles like another generations game.

    Honestly world did amazing! With only a small bunch of old world monsters present in the New World to open the gates for a completely new roster, wish the next gen game does something similar by implementing new biomes outside of plain forests and deserts and with them comes a brand new roster of monsters

    I feel like alot of these are still staples of the series, and can be used as benchmarks as you progress to compare to the new monsters they add and how they stack up to the oldies, that way we have something to compare the new ones too and we know how strong they are comparatively

      This is a good way to look at it. The returning monsters d act as a sort of benchmark for the hunts, and they could also be useful in determining favorites through comparison and contrast

    Probably nargacuga FEELS prelevant, despite being not quite, cause if it appears, it usually bolsters ctit gear, witch has been the cornerstone of all the builds in monster hunter and people farm this monster a lot.

    I would honestly rather have these old monsters than some of the new monsters in Rise

      For sure! That's bound to happen as well. The flagships are just made to be these incredible and memorable monsters, especially compared to some of the other regular monsters in the game.

    There should be a massive game of Monster Hunter, a so-called “Smash Ultimate” of Monster Hunter, where everyone is there. A Monster Hunter World on steroids. If you loose essential monsters like Rathalos, it’s like having a Pokémon game without its mascot, Pikachu.
    We need a massive local that leads to multiple other areas known in older games, and monsters that are underwater variants could have some touch ups in underwater combat controls to make it worthwhile. Bring it all in! All the gigantic monsters! All the deviant forms!

    I don’t know if Rathalos and Rathian will ever see a break seeing as they are THE monster hunter monsters.
