Its about being at a club and all the different musical factions (punks, mods, skinheads, rudeboys) and a fight takes place on the dancefloor, its only a story but its how we lived in the late 70s, early 80s here in the UK, so many musical genres back then
England was a very tribal place back then - trouble was always simmering between the rival youth cults and violence was a regular occurrence - scary at times but an amazing time to be young so much great music and venues and importantly affordable.
I’m drawn like a moth to the flame of The Ruts and this in particular. I defy anyone not to tap their feet to this … it’s “ Proper Bo I tell thee ! “. Genuine banger !!! 👌 👍🏴
Loved this when this came out - the last burning embers of the first wave of punk whilst the big 4 (Pistols, Stranglers, Clash and the Damned) had developed - well in the case of Pistols imploded.
Thank you for doing this, it's always appreciated when you do one of my suggestions. A great song from a great band, it's about the Punk and 2 Tone scenes coming together at the time (1980) in U.K. and both tribes reacting to the Political unrest, and about the Punks using Amphetamines as escapism.
It’s about tribal fighting amongst groups of people eg rude boys, skinheads and punks which was a big things in the late 70s even going back to the 60s eg , mods and rocker the 70s the punks and the teddy boys
I'm going to be dancing with the RUDE BOY'S this Sunday at THE AUCKLAND WINTER SKA FESTIVAL it's got a really really good line up of Local Ska bands REALLY GOOD we have a thriving Ska/Punk scene here and unlike back in the day there's no VIOLENCE 👏👏👏 IT'S MATURED INTO A PLACE THAT IT'S UNACCEPTABLE ISN'T TOLERATED. It's a happy thing for this stinky old punkrocker

Thanks for doing this - it's one of my favourite songs (to listen to and play) and I'm glad you liked it. (re my name... it seems to have developed because not only do people sometimes think I'm being grumpy [usually I'm not being grumpy, I'm just being honest with them!], but also because when I play drums I have [apparently] a grumpy look about me! 🙂)
People think I (Chris) am grumpy a lot too. Every time a new guy is hired at work, they're afraid to approach me. I guess my furrowed brow makes me look angry.
Malcolm Owen, The Ruts. Ian Curtis, Joy Division. What they both might have become if they hadn't died (Malcolm, OD'd, Ian, topped himself) just as they were starting to get big and within two months of each other.
Thanks for doing this one, I just knew it would be up your street. The line A hand in the crowds flying propaganda refers to ski heads giving Nazi Salutes which was unfortunately very common in the late 70’s. The Tuts were at the forefront of the Rock Against Racism movement in the UK.
..hi..got the first LP of my brothers hands 1982..,,love them... ,,saw them many years later as support for ,,die Toten Hosen,,.. And later with the ,,Straglers,, in Hamburg..🎸🎸✌️✌️✌️
Nine people asked for this because I did too! 🙂 The rude boys were black and by 1980 skinheads (which had started out as a non racist reaction to hippies and the culture underlined that by its embrace of Jamaican ska and rocksteady) were associated with fascism and the National Front so “staring at the rude boys” (while punks were off their faces) is a reflection of the antagonism between the two movements which ironically both fed off “heavy heavy ska”.
Those conflicts weren't much fun back in the eighties. Sure took the shine off some potentially great times waking up with bruises or hospital NOT FUN!!!
I think this is a great improvement over the Clash track we heard the other day. When skinheads aligned themselves with the National Front, they were an embarrassing nuisance for a while, it left a nasty taste but not much of a legacy in mainstream culture.

Unbelievably, it is 44 years since Malcolm Owen's death, where did the time go?
I saw The Ruts twice at Newcastle Mayfair in 79 & 80, right up there with the best gigs I've ever attended and believe me there have been 100's.
jealous here I missed them there

push comes to shove my all time favourite song, love it, one song i can play on repeat forever
Saw The Ruts twice, first totally blowing The Damned offstage in Leicester and a cracking headliner in Northampton. The last truly great UK punk band.
The Jam used this song at the start of one of their live performance VHS tapes in the early 80s.

I used to play this back to back wi "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" and "Alternative Ulster".

Look at demolishing dancing by the ruts ? Starting at the rude boys was one of there greatest songs

A song about the hipsters in the trendy Ska scene & the potential conflicts with the punk rockers. Age old rivalry Mods Vs Rockers.
Youth club discos , gigs were very micey in the late 70s early 80s , many waring youth factions
This is great quality stuff.
Now for more great quality stuff. Who did it better, Temple of the king between Rainbow and Axel Rudi Pell.
If you haven’t already, give jah war a listen
I think they have

Who did it better: The Ruts or Dag Nasty? As a D.C. guy I gotta go with Dag.
Did they do this song?
@@hanierfamily They did indeed. On the 1988 album Field Day. Not their best record, but a good cover of this particular song.
Punks skins rude boys mods all happening at the same time, bunch of bm's british movement.
