This song came out in 1980, and lead singer Malcolm Owen died that same year. They then continued as The Ruts DC. Guitarist Paul Fox died in 2007, but just before he died a benefit gig took place in London with lead vocal taken by Henry Rollins! 'Babylon's Burning' remains their most well known song.
Excellent stuff ! More Ruts, please. The scenario in this song is familiar to anybody who was a youth in the early 80s. Youth culture consisted of various "tribes" which had their own scenes with little crossover.
Great song, love the energy. Telling the story of the different genres that there was in 1980 in the Uk, with punk on the decline and ska in ascendant you can feel the animosity between them. You could punch your mate purely because he liked a different “brand of music to you. Love the channel.
The Ruts are great, their biggest hit was “Babylon’s Burning” , they are known now as Ruts DC I saw them live this year when they supported The Stranglers, they still sound fantastic, I really enjoyed this Nick 👍
Enjoyed this Nick. Reminds of how tribal the late 70s were Mods,Punks,Skins,Rockers etc not like now with everyone walking around in designer sports wear listening to garbage
Always the best of the second wave in my opinion. Tragic that Malcom died before they got to record a 2nd album. Just listening to the post-Crack singles and the couple of post-Crack Peel Session tracks that were included on the Grin and Bear it album, they were clearly getting even better. West One (Shine On Me) is a truly magical song.
The UK music scene in the late 70's. early eighties was intensely divided and tribal and as you might expect, there was a lot of violence and tension at gigs especially on the dance floor. Terrifying but exciting too. :-)
Really dig your channel. Do you have a favorite genre? I grew up on "new wave" and classic rock. (nowadays I'm digging more hardcore and outlaw country). I would call the Ruts post-punk. I am happy to see you have reacted to much from this great genre. Thanks
Glad you like my channel! I grew up on rap and old country. I really loved punk throughout high school. For more insight, my fav bands are Oasis, The Doors, and the Beach Boys.
I saw them twice.. Life... Great, sound of my youth,, /greedings from Germany..... Try :,, Broilers - Meine Sache,, (Pop. German Band..) enjoy other language.. 🎸😁Today we have a lot of,, rude Boys,, +Punks,,.. Here.. And they Don, t fight each other.. Better time today
@@InsignificantNick I was there. I was in it in 76/77/78/79 It was full on violence against the NF Fascist at every gig. Don't tell me I don't know. I've got the scars

I didn't even realize that Owen passed the same year. Well RIP to him. And I saw that Rollins did vocals for them, that's awesome!
The Jam used the start of this song to introduce their 1982 live concert VHS video.
The song was written about the dawn of Two-Tone, the record company that spawned the likes of The Specials and even Madness...

Great band, I'm sure you'd love their songs.
Dope for Guns
In a Rut
Babylon's Burning
In A Rut (live in Paris) in 1980
I saw Ruts DC (They changed their name after Malcoms death) in Bristol last Friday.
They still kick ass. 🙂

Yup, seen them support The Stranglers a few times, and also The Damned. They never disappoint!
Babylon's Burning is one of the greatest punk songs.

probably the best second wave of Punk band of all time! 1980 we lost Lennon, Bon, Curtis and Malcolm Owen of The Ruts. What could've been.

I would suggest either H-Eyes or In A Rut for your next Ruts review although Babylon's Burning was arguably their biggest, and best hit.

Can we get a Manic Street Preachers reaction before Christmas, try Everything must go, it’s a great song.
You haven't a clue mate.
Hard disagree.
