The lyricist/vocalist was Malcolm Owen, he suffered heroin addiction until his early death, for obvious reasons. The thing that shows this song as different was, it ws a rock song but they replayed the whole song at the end and gave it a Dub version, this has to be the first rock song to include a dub version, so far ahead of its time. Such a talented band who are still loved today, even though they were almost overlooked in their time... ask Henry Rollins, he has made a carreer out of his love of the Ruts.
The Ruts were a classic punk band and they are still going, sadly without lead singer Malcolm Owen who is sadly departed, im seeing them live in two weeks time, very tuneful and tight band, yeah Babylons Burning is defo worth a review. Jah War which is punk reggae is also a top song and well worth a listen.
The Ruts are my favourite "Punk" band along with The Stranglers.Diverse in sound ,style and songwritng.Heads above any other bands from England at the time. You should check out Love in Vein... another amazing tune.
Great critique! My favourite Ruts song. Seeing the band (now Ruts DC) tonight in London so hopefully in the set. Incidentally not New York/Manhattan. West One (London W1) is a postcode area smack in the middle of the city, Soho area.
The extended bit is like a tribute to Malcolm Owen. Once he died (1980), the Ruts as we knew them, all to briefly , ceased to exist. So this is , in essence the Malcolm Owen tribute single, his last, posthumous. But to be frank....the end bit is window dressing. Hey o
Just a great Punk/Reggae band from England.. I believe this was released as a Single around 1981.. this would be an extended version.. Please check out "Babylon's Burning " or "Jah War ".. Another UK band you might like is 999.. Try "Feeling Alright With the Crew ", "Emergency ", or "Inside Out".. thanks.
It's a song about the area of London called Soho. The postcode for this area is W1, which means "West One". The comment to being the only one that's straight is a reference to the prevalent Gay culture in Soho.
The lights red and white is about the colours of the bulbs of the street lights some are white some are red depending on what chemicals inside the street lights in England the main ones where red , white and yellow depends on what gas they put into the elements of the street lights .
Wow, I haven't heard this band name for ages. They had a song "Babylon's Burning", which, as the title implies, was a Clash, uh, we'll say homage. In this song too he's got the Joe Strummer sound down pretty well. Not bad.
the ruts made a few brilliant singles, in a rut(their best imo, ) babylons burning, something that i said and this one(though not too impressed with the extra parts added to this version) and they made an impressive debut album ,the crack- there was only a few british punk bands that have stood the test of time and the ruts are one of them- always wondered how they would have progressed if not for malcolm owens tragic death
Hi man! I really love your reactions. I would love to request a song called 'Troubleman' by Electric Guest, would be thrilled to see your reaction on it. Thanks!
Oh you're a non-drinker? Kudos from another one👍🍵 I am curious if you would like Minor Threat. Particularly their song Straight Edge. And their singer (Ian McKaye)'s next band Fugazi. They are post-hardcore. I think he got tired of fans moshing so they changed their style. Because the shows were getting rough
They never reached the acclaim like The Clash, but in my opinion they were just as good. Unfortunately the lead singer Malcolm Owen died of a heroine overdose in 1980. Such a waste of a talent.
One of the greatest punk singles ever by one of the best bands of that era. I wish I could return to the past. Great days.

‘Babylon’s Burning’ and ‘In A Rut’ are classics.
In A Rut is an insane peice of music, Paul Fox goes off into sonics that had never been explored before.

It was Love In Vain, but, yup.... it really meant Love in Vein.

It's London, not New York mate. They were a UK band. Do a bit of research I suggest before commenting on the music,
