  • Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro* institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family
In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.
In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.
At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

while racism still exists today, his dream did come true. every time I see blacks and whites together and eating or laughing or holding hands I just smile knowing he is smiling down on them from up above. we still need to do a lot of work though, but so much progress has been made because of the marches and protests led by Dr. King.

I just shared part of this video with my 7 year old daughter. I tried to explain the "I have a dream" part and how anyone can have a dream to change the world, to make the once impossible possible. Then, I asked her if she had a dream. She said "I have a dream that one day people can fly like birds without airplanes or jet packs."

What folks don't realize is that even before he made that speech, hundreds of counties throughout the nation were already making a mockery of that notion. Instead of using the word negro, they criminalized what they believed to be character flaws within the black community.
For example, some policies denied certain services to people who had illegitimate children. For decades, black couples had either been denied married licenses or the costs were too high. They got married in a church without a license and, as far as they were concerned, they were married in the eyes of the Lord. In some cases social services were denied because they had kids but no piece of paper saying they were married.
The drug penalties were the worst. Many of us had been screaming for years how unjust they were. Especially when it came to marijuana, which was used more heavily by black and Hispanic kids (or so it was portrayed). Years after all of that people pretend they don't know how so many young black males ended up in prison on drug charges. Black drug users were junkies, thugs, and vagrants. White drug users were just sick and downtrodden.
Many of us who saw this play out are still alive. It's so discouraging to see politicians doing some of the same things today. You can change laws all you want, but it takes much more to change the hearts and minds of people, for better or for worse.

I hope you found that wonderful little pearl where freedom of association was denied so that people who didnt want to be mixed in with those of other races and beliefs were forced to do so. Freedom of Association is part of the constitution, MLK was one of the driving wedges between America and its founding document.
It doesnt matter if it only protects a bunch of alabama "racists" from having to deal with people not like themself. What matters is true freedom. True liberty. The ability to, without fear of persecution, decide what you want to do with your life, time, money. And ever since the end of "segregation" that option is denied to everyone.
Just saying no body bats an eyelash when people refer to a 'Black' church. yet if I go try to make a 'Whites only' restaurant Ill be called a racist til theyre blue in the face.

Martin Luther King 🙌 Even though your life was taken away from you, your legacy lives on 🙏❤️ Though racism still exists today, you've made a huge impact on everybody. Me, a black girl, I can walk into shop, without being stared at for being 'black', because of you. I can play with white people, because of you. I can do anything a white person can do, because of you.
But we also mustn't forget others that have helped this cause: Nelson Mandela, Malcom X, Frederick Douglass and so much more. Your spirits will live on forever and always🙏🙌💓"Free at last, Free at last. Thank God almighty, we're free at last"🙏✨🙌

I am a Japanese high school student girl. There is a text about him in my country’s English textbooks. We learn what discrimination looks like in America, and express our thoughts, and discuss it. I wish for a world where all people can live happily.

I have a dream that someday everyone shall be looked at as equal . It's 2017 and we're still here . Races going against each other , religions fighting , is this what Martin Luther king jr. did all this for ? It's time to come together . It's time to make him proud .

'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation that will not judge them by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.'
Beautiful words by a man blessed by God.
Unfortunately, more and more of us are rejecting these words as 'racist color-blindness'. THIS CREED, THAT ALL MEN ARE EQUAL REGARDLESS OF SKIN, AND THAT NO-ONE WILL LOOKS AT OR CARE ABOUT SKIN COLOR IS TRUE EQUALITY! NOT complaining of color-blindness. NOT complaining about cultural appropriation. NOT belief that all white people cannot be discriminated against because they have white privilege. True equality is NOT identity politics, identity politics is the true racism. The racism that was then, with the segregation of schools, and the racism that is now, with there being minority quotas.

It was the most Profound words that I have ever heard. Second only to Christ's sermon on the Mount. The Peace makers of this world are the True Martyrs

Thank you . The comment was written one late night . And I was tired and Didnt think straight . But yes its speech . And what a wonderful speech doctor king made that Dayin august 28 1963. . I will always share his dream. I have newer jugded people on how they look (I dont Care about the color of People's skin ) for we are all humans . I like use a quote used by poet from my country of Denmark . His name was piet hein . And during the height of the cold war . He Said This quote : co eksistence or no eksistence( meaning either we as humans learn to live toghether or blow each other to pieces) . I belive in co eksistence , we are all humans and we share this one planet. And there is no need for violence or war. This is why I like doctor Kings dream . For there sadly still people out there being persecuted because of their faith , skin color or their ideas . And This is wrong . Have a Nice day

You mean disappointed that people still get judged by their color? Giving handouts to people based on being black. Still not seen as equal....by the democrats.
Republicans might be having rather harsh views on immigration and trump might be further in that. But I never saw him say something that is too bad. The Mexican thing well yea. But realize that is the new wave of politics, here in Europe it is like that for almost a decade now. Go extreme and then maybe negotiate from that point.
Obama made a big mistake with already giving his peace offering and giving away his trump-cards before negotiations even started. Giving him a serious disadvantage.
I think there is room for maneuvering with Trump. And during the transition period already see bits of it. His harsh language on the TPP treaty is good. Might actually get other countries to bend towards him because the USA is the biggest economic power in the region. Some countries even said that the TPP is useless without the USA. Does that not say there is enough to gain for the USA. Feels like previous governments were just doing handouts. Seeing those reactions from other countries.
Finally screw race. I am not american but if you are american you are american... nothing like race or whatever. That was MLK jrs dream. A america where race does not matter in anything.
