Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have A Dream Speech

- Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro* institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family
In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.
In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.
At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.
On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.
while racism still exists today, his dream did come true. every time I see blacks and whites together and eating or laughing or holding hands I just smile knowing he is smiling down on them from up above. we still need to do a lot of work though, but so much progress has been made because of the marches and protests led by Dr. King.
xxladybug94 when i see blacks and whites together eating or laughing, i think, "hey there's some people laughing and smiling".
xxladybug94 .....This Journey has just begun , i am so happy , evey step in the right way (love) is a great victory from my Point of view.

So they got to killed every blackleader with a powerful voice ,to us show a little progress in the evil the white men do is am right
One day the human race will understand that we are one, one love, one heart let's just love each other
Keep dreaming too..What are we without dreams , without purpose. If we stop to think everyone is alive now in this world because of love and not because of hate, everybody once was a vunerable small baby who only survivied because of mother's caring and nurture bu when they grow up they want to hurt each other but in the end everybody will need just 6 feet under in oder to his/her body rot doesnt matter all the money and ' the sand castles' all goes with the wind..
The dream should be still possible.

I just shared part of this video with my 7 year old daughter. I tried to explain the "I have a dream" part and how anyone can have a dream to change the world, to make the once impossible possible. Then, I asked her if she had a dream. She said "I have a dream that one day people can fly like birds without airplanes or jet packs."
+Ann Nyakundi Haha, that's so cute! Good teaching your daughter this early my friends and I are 15, and they didn't even know what this day was about..
+Ann Nyakundi Well... Once upon a time, someone had a dream that airplanes and jet packs would someday exist...

how funny
"I have a dream where my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"
That is my favorite quote from the speech too.
I can confirm that is what he said
What folks don't realize is that even before he made that speech, hundreds of counties throughout the nation were already making a mockery of that notion. Instead of using the word negro, they criminalized what they believed to be character flaws within the black community.
For example, some policies denied certain services to people who had illegitimate children. For decades, black couples had either been denied married licenses or the costs were too high. They got married in a church without a license and, as far as they were concerned, they were married in the eyes of the Lord. In some cases social services were denied because they had kids but no piece of paper saying they were married.
The drug penalties were the worst. Many of us had been screaming for years how unjust they were. Especially when it came to marijuana, which was used more heavily by black and Hispanic kids (or so it was portrayed). Years after all of that people pretend they don't know how so many young black males ended up in prison on drug charges. Black drug users were junkies, thugs, and vagrants. White drug users were just sick and downtrodden.
Many of us who saw this play out are still alive. It's so discouraging to see politicians doing some of the same things today. You can change laws all you want, but it takes much more to change the hearts and minds of people, for better or for worse.
Beautiful speech taken too soon
watching this for an assignment in school and I now don't look at it as simply boring homework, but a fascinating speech that everyone should hear and learn from. I'm so grateful that I got to learn about this man and speech.

@@shadowfire04 in the end there is a lot of racism towards white people and demonizing them like with critical race theory and stuff like that, literally judging someone based on the color of their skin

The greatest speech of all time! Said by one of the bravest men of all time. RIP Martin Luther King Jr.
I am from Russia and I am writing a course work about Martin Luther King and the civil rights struggle for the black people. I decided to watch his legendary speech in the original, and what can I say, I'm crying. He is the legend, the last saint on this Earth.
Hi rain. I cry too when I listen. It's just so sad. Not only did he stick up for what's right but he had a family too.
Hes not alive though...
I hope you found that wonderful little pearl where freedom of association was denied so that people who didnt want to be mixed in with those of other races and beliefs were forced to do so. Freedom of Association is part of the constitution, MLK was one of the driving wedges between America and its founding document.
It doesnt matter if it only protects a bunch of alabama "racists" from having to deal with people not like themself. What matters is true freedom. True liberty. The ability to, without fear of persecution, decide what you want to do with your life, time, money. And ever since the end of "segregation" that option is denied to everyone.
Just saying no body bats an eyelash when people refer to a 'Black' church. yet if I go try to make a 'Whites only' restaurant Ill be called a racist til theyre blue in the face.
@@bunnieskitties293 yes, the freedom impose your racism on others has been lost, how tragic....

Your name sounds Middle Eastern, so you may be shocked to know that Arabians were the first to take Africans out of their home and enslave them. 'I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation that will not judge them by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.'
Beautiful words by a man blessed by God.
Unfortunately, more and more of us are rejecting these words as 'racist color-blindness'. THIS CREED, THAT ALL MEN ARE EQUAL REGARDLESS OF SKIN, AND THAT NO-ONE WILL LOOKS AT OR CARE ABOUT SKIN COLOR IS TRUE EQUALITY! NOT complaining of color-blindness. NOT complaining about cultural appropriation. NOT belief that all white people cannot be discriminated against because they have white privilege. True equality is NOT identity politics, identity politics is the true racism. The racism that was then, with the segregation of schools, and the racism that is now, with there being minority quotas.
as a very young white boy in Birmingham Alabama. I never heard this speech I was born in 1961. when the ignorance left me at 12 I heard this speech. It was the most Profound words that I have ever heard. Second only to Christ's sermon on the Mount. The Peace makers of this world are the True Martyrs
Carla Linton. I would like to Wish The Late Great Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A Happy Birthday. 2019.
2300 thumbs down?!?!? WHY?!?!?! This is one of the greatest speeches ever spoken. Dr. King is one of the greatest Americans.
I wish BLM was actually this peaceful
All lives matter.
That is the point, you see.
zzzlez Clearly you're going by the media's coloring of BLM.
Belthazor24
zzzlez Well America is not peaceful, why should anyone be peaceful after their own people are getting shot up for no reason.
Blacks kill their own far more often than any other ethnicity does. Stop already.
Amazing moving words of an incredible man.
I cannot believe that people come here to see videos and then comment such absurd things about them. Not even good opinions about why they don't like it or so... Honestly, reading some of these comments makes you understand why our society is so lost!
Ignorance is bliss, but only because they are probably not intelligent enough to understand the world around them, those who's eye's are open can see the ill of the world and want to do something about it.
Gisel Laracuente, you sound like this is your first time on the internet.
How amazing of a man he was can not be overstated... we need someone like this these days.
True words of a true artist
PREACH

Fuck mlk
Well fuck you he is great why would you say that
+Reid Roman your comment is a disgrace to humanity, and a clear indication of hate, weaknesses and arrogance.
Bow
Rip Doctor King . We all share that that Dream . What a beatiful speach
madsdahlc The word is spelled "speech", madsdahlc. Not "speach". Just FYI.
Thank you . The comment was written one late night . And I was tired and Didnt think straight . But yes its speech . And what a wonderful speech doctor king made that Dayin august 28 1963. . I will always share his dream. I have newer jugded people on how they look (I dont Care about the color of People's skin ) for we are all humans . I like use a quote used by poet from my country of Denmark . His name was piet hein . And during the height of the cold war . He Said This quote : co eksistence or no eksistence( meaning either we as humans learn to live toghether or blow each other to pieces) . I belive in co eksistence , we are all humans and we share this one planet. And there is no need for violence or war. This is why I like doctor Kings dream . For there sadly still people out there being persecuted because of their faith , skin color or their ideas . And This is wrong . Have a Nice day
It is still possible good people, keep Dr King’s passion in your minds...
The lord blessed. This man to bring all the people together and he did no made up story true story his dream came true Dr.Martin Luther King love you always.
He would be so dissapointed.
assman jones many things in his dream came true
I think he'ed call this a nightmare of his dream.
agree he would
True
You mean disappointed that people still get judged by their color? Giving handouts to people based on being black. Still not seen as equal....by the democrats.
Republicans might be having rather harsh views on immigration and trump might be further in that. But I never saw him say something that is too bad. The Mexican thing well yea. But realize that is the new wave of politics, here in Europe it is like that for almost a decade now. Go extreme and then maybe negotiate from that point.
Obama made a big mistake with already giving his peace offering and giving away his trump-cards before negotiations even started. Giving him a serious disadvantage.
I think there is room for maneuvering with Trump. And during the transition period already see bits of it. His harsh language on the TPP treaty is good. Might actually get other countries to bend towards him because the USA is the biggest economic power in the region. Some countries even said that the TPP is useless without the USA. Does that not say there is enough to gain for the USA. Feels like previous governments were just doing handouts. Seeing those reactions from other countries.
Finally screw race. I am not american but if you are american you are american... nothing like race or whatever. That was MLK jrs dream. A america where race does not matter in anything.
