Genesis' Steve Hackett and his shocking Led Zeppelin revelation!...and Hipgnosis.

- A Genesis and Led Zeppelin connection you can't miss. In a world of album covers, this seems to be quite a theory to consider. Let's deep dive into the possibilities of this taking place in London's 70s rock and roll business. It looks like both bands shared so much more than Headley Grange for inspiration. Cheers,
Thanks for another great vlog Jose. Rich here, I posted about being at the 1977 TEMPE Show. I saw Phil Collins in 1983, he played drums for Robert Plant on his “Principle of Moments” Tour and never sang a note. The show was at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena in Northern California, I kept watching for Phil to sing, but he didn’t even have a microphone at this drum kit. Keep on posting…
Very cool video! Interesting fact! Awesome to think about Genesis all listening to “Kashmir” as well! Wow! Music was so powerful back then, especially if you were the mighty Led Zeppelin!
Right!! I like how they referenced Led Zeppelin's influence without hesitation, speaks volumes of their musicianship, willing to learn from others! Thanks for watching!
Fascinating as always! Two great bands, and I’m glad the object landed with Zep
Glad you enjoyed it! The album cover didn't fit A Trick of the Tail
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories exactly. Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are two of my favorites in the Genesis catalog. No post Gabriel slump! The Lamb is also a fantastic album
Love both bands but IMHO Led Zeppelin are on another level not just with Genesis but everyone else.
Growing up in the 80s, these bands were SO silo'd off culturally, by the fans. Gabriel was the cool side of Top 40, Genesis has-beens, Floyd the relics everyone could agree on, and Zep the gateway to the metal kids smoking section in the back of the high school. But the deeper you dig, the more they all have in common, and their mutual respect is really nice to see in the archive footage.
Yes it's definitely nice to see they all knew each other and rivalries were not on their plate but working hard to MAKE IT!
Hipgnosis did the same in the late 70s, offering Black Sabbath a cover for Never Say Die! that ultimately became the cover for Rainbow's Difficult to Cure
Wow, the one for Rainbow actually fits Never Say Die better....it's really thought provoking like this.
When ‘The Object’ concept was pitched to Led Zeppelin by Hipgnosis, the *Presence* notion and suggestions for the artwork were - to help explain both artistically and metaphorically - that elusive quality that the band had when they appeared for their live shows - that they possessed a mysterious, metaphysical certain: ‘je ne sais quoi...’ 🔮
They had that quality, absolutely. Even at their worst, they were better than the rest! Thanks for watching
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Hi Jose, I just posted a comment on your Vienna Concert video from yesterday. Cheers! 🥂
Always thought it was the worst Zeppelin album cover and not really fitting for them.
I’ve always loved the drum beat on Squonk-especially on the “Seconds Out” live album. One of the best live albums ever. Now, I learn it was influenced by John Bonham’s drum beat on “Kashmir.” Makes total sense.
I would mix Squonk with Achilles Last Stand, they share a similar harmony, crazy right? Inspiration is an antenna picking up the collective conscious signals! Thanks for watching!
The straight lines used on Sabbaths Technical Ecstasy reminds me of the Lamb art.
Yes, i can see the similarity there Ronald. Thanks for watching!
Did anyone ever catch tha Fool in the rain sounds a lot like Misunderstanding, and that both songs have similar stories? Or vice versa?
They both sound similar indeed, and actually Phil got it from an oldies track i can't remember at the moment, but it's THE same thing hehe.
Interesting episode! You sure do your homework,Jose. Just like you I am a huge Genesis fan. I love everything between “Trespass” and “Genesis” (1983). Every album is just full of incredible songs and amazing melodies. I bought Duke in 1981 and fell in love with them after that. You and I are also huge Santana fans. I absolutely adore Santana….once again one of my fav bands… right up to “Zebop”. Cheers 👍
Our dream gig would be a 1973 three artist bill of Zeppelin, Santana and Genesis....imagine! haha. Thanks Tim, this episode i had on my waiting list since i needed John Edginton's approval and luckily he enjoyed it! Gotta give him praise for capturing these interviews.
Hipgnosis had a rejected Pink Floyd album cover of a guy diving into a pool be used by Def Leppard for their second album High N Dry (which was their hard rock masterpiece in the vein of AC/DC). Styx used Hipgnosis once on Pieces of Eight, Dennis DeYoung had this hilarious story about Pieces of Eight's cover he told In the Studio with Redbeard host Redbeard in 1991. "When Hipgnosis (they're English, I think that explains everything (Redbeard laughed)) initially produced the sleeve with the three old women wearing Easter Island earrings on Easter Island, I said I hated it and said "Why do you have these three old broads on our album cover" which was the first thought that came to our mind. Now I'm older, these women look rather good to me. What it symbolizes is the earrings is their status from being successful"
Wow i didn't know the Floyd rejected that cover used by Leppard, that's crazy. Pieces of Eight is a terrific cover, glad they chose it! Thanks for watching!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories It’s true.
There was a documentary made on 10cc here in the UK for BBC. They too were offered 'the object' as a concept and like Genesis, rejected it. This was probably for their 1976 How Dare You! album.
I need to check that out, so the Object was rejected by two bands, wow, Classic Hipgnosis....
Hmm Interesting-Never knew re Presence cover, etc. A Quickie but Goodie for sure-Thanx Jose !
Glad you enjoyed this one Ian. I was amazed at Hackett's confession really....the other guys looked at him like OMG haha. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for a very interesting video, two of the most influential bands in Rock history. Have a wonderful week and carry on bringing us these fabulous stories. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching, stay tuned for more!
More Genesis! 😅 Also yeah, John's channel has tons of great stuff.
John's channel is amazing!"
Hey, I'd like for you to check out the similarities between for the benefit of mr kite by the beatles and the willow farm section of suppers ready by Genesis. I really think it's the inspiration
Sounds like a challenge man. You can join my Patreon if you have the chance, this way i can produce it with more peace of mind :)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Considering I just got paid, I'll take you up on that offer. Could you give me the link
I think it's a matter of many things being possibly true at the same time. I'm sure Page/Zep had significant input into the finished artwork as well as I'm sure that Hipgnosis likely had several ideas developed around that time that they were shopping to various bands. Page/Zep surely put their stamp on it but design firms do, in fact, design things to sell so I'm not at all surprised by this.
Yes design is a borrowed sources thing. The more they delved deep into inspiration from previous media, this will happen. Gotta love Hipgnosis influence on classic rock! Thanks for watching!
Just not a genesis fan, so glad Phil Collins _finally_ went away
Some people say he now plays Vladimir Putin.
Therefore music had to take a backseat.
💥HOW did he get sO big, his solo POP hits like easy lover were nothing compared to genisis.
Ahhh I think they just pissing on the Zep. Zeppelin was on a higher and different level then Genesis that’s why the were treated different.
Hipgnosis kept all their "rejected" designs and offered them to other bands...and why not? ..Jimmy Page has done nothing but recycle his same work, over and over again for the last 35 years.
Yeah definitely agree with copying but still sour grapes. I just can’t post here that intel. lol. I still like the Zep way who would release an album with no name and put one in a brown paper bag.
True but Genesis were better imo. Cheers!
Led Zep fans know that their band is one of the biggest bands in rock history and being a fan gets you street credibility. You don't get street cred being a Genesis fan. You don't go out and get a Genesis tattoo. You are not going to hear Supper's Ready on a rock radio station. A lot of their stuff would kill a nightclub dead if you played it. But the majority of their albums are the bollox and they were either of their time or ahead of it. A highly original band who never shied away from their upbringing and kept it real, man. Credit where it's due. They gave credit to the Zep in this vid.
I’ve been a big fan of both through out the years but technically speaking Genesis are way ahead of Zep
This was interesting. All the mentioning you do of the Presence cover (especially its origin inside Earl's Court at a boat show, explaining why I always thought the photo felt like some sort of make-believe world) have you ever seen the bootleg album Persistence? It's a one-off take on Presence. One other Zeppelin/Genesis link is --- when Phil Collins drummed on Plant's '83 Principle of Moments tour, he also brought the Genesis lighting rig trusses with him, which were state of the art at the time. Yep, mmm-hmm.
Oh man yes, the cover for Persistence and inner sleeve are great. I love this stuff. Collins added so much power to Plant's comeback tour of 1983. I made a video on this period here on the channel. Too bad Robert didn't keep the same band you know? Thanks for watching!
💥Phil ALSO was Plants MAIN drummer on his first 2 solo ALBUMS !
Seems hardly no one knew that back then or present!
Looking forward to this
When I was about 16 I went on a working roadtrip with my dad. I had 1 rule: I get to choose the music. By day 3 my classic country loving dad had become a. Zep fan. He asked me the name of that album.
"In Through the Out Door." I said.
He screwed up his face and said "What the hell?"
I said "Why, what does that mean, because none of my friends know either?"
"When I was in England for the war it was a slang term for putting it in the wrong hole."
I guess that presense thing got into their heads. Like a Crowley hangover.
Hahahahahahahahahaha. That's funny, well i thought of that too, and the album cover is Brown so i don't know man. Robert Plant did reference this at Knebworth when he talked about the album being one of those "forced" entrances.
Genesis was a good band but they never knocked my socks off like Zeppelin did. I never bought one Genesis record, but I have purchased every Zeppelin album. I couldn't name one Genesis song if my life depended on it. Whether Genesis was offered the album cover before it was offered to Zeppelin is irrelevant. It still would have been the same outcome and wouldn't have made their music sound any better.
Presence is my second favorite Zep album, PG being my favorite. But I don't care for the cover art on Presence. On the other hand Genesis is a band I love considerably more than LZ and ATOTT is my favorite Genesis album with a perfectly fitting cover. It makes my skin crawl to think that ATOTT might have been adorned with the object cover art.
So what’s the shocking bit?
You can watch my Making of Presence series for the proper context that makes this shocking for Zepp Fans. Thanks for watching!
It doesn't surprise me that 'The Object' album idea was floated to Genesis first given Zeppelin's history of "borrowing" songs from blues artists. LZ does have a bit of a tarnished legacy and reputation despite still being the quintessential rock band and my favorite band for decades. I'm not going to change that after 50+ years. It is what it is... warts and all.
It certainly adds interesting questions and avenues to their story right? Thanks for watching Robert!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories -It does.
"And it makes me wonder" to use a famous song lyric. Perhaps some extra added controversy which never hurts, either. Good channel and content. -Cheers.
Very interesting stuff. I admit I've been a Genesis fan since my brother let me borrow his 70 Chevy Nova one day and he had a Genesis cassette in the Alpine car radio. I listened to that all night and was spellbound. One of those things a prog rock fanatic like myself remembers as a key moment in my musical education. Thanks for the vid JMC !
Good research again ❤
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting! Thanks Jose!
Glad you enjoyed it Marcia!
And i believe that there is more.
Hopefully it comes out! Thanks for watching!
Very cool discovery JCM !!!!
Hackett probably surprised his bandmates you know? I'm sure they forgot about that hehe.
Thank God they didn't go for it. It's shite. The Trick of the Tail artwork is so much better.
Designed by Colin Elgie also of Hipgnosis.
A trick of the tail is PERFECT! Thanks for watching!
You KNOW I adore Genesis. And they were right. That cover for TOTT? wouldn't have worked but it's perfect for Presence.
Imagine had Led Zeppelin used the one for 10CC i somehow like it more than Presence, weird huh? Man Genesis back then was SO...FREAKING GOOD!
AWESOME
Nice job
Luv the blue mushroom treatment on Phil Collins
Dont know whats going on with the comments disappearing, but someone was questioning my veracity concerning the "Squaring the Circle" documentary. For the record at approx. 1:06 of the documentary "Squaring the Circle," Aubrey "Po" Powell of Hipgnosis says "they" made EIGHT objects. 8. EDIT: Found out SS did make 1000, promo "objects" then "somebody" made 500 "replicas"...I am sure that MANY of these circulating "objects" are highly suspect.
Hey man so this user Matt has been commenting a lot...to the point of saying "this channel has a tendency to take trivial subjects", meaning they are pointless. I think YT saw some harrassment there and i think people lile him need so much attention they come here and try to point fingers. I always welcome your comments.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thanks JCM. I know that my opinions are occasionally at odds with the bulk of the LZ fanbase, so as always, I appreciate you letting me speak my mind. Respectful discourse is an important thing. Best to you man.
Exactly. Respect is the key to any discussion. I can take people not liking In Through The Out Door as long as there's an eloquent conversation :)
This is a lot of nonsense and a bunch of crap Jimmy Page came up with the idea for the cover to presence
You can check my Presence documentary here on the channel. Thanks for watching!
no. no he didnt. He added a "twist" to the object, and thats about it.
Pretty typical Page turn. Taking credit for everything. Is that a Kubrick thing? I'll have that for breakfast too, with my bangers and mash.
Great video. Presence album cover is so bad 😂
It's certainly different from Physical Graffiti, i actually like how the 10CC one looks haha. Thanks for watching!

Es muy bueno. Se pasan las horas viendo las entrevistas. Un artista!
I called it!!
💥Anyone notice the Crazy interesting exaggerated “effects”of Phil’s shadow on the GENISIS “mamma” video?
Ment To be evil like
That was just about the last thing he did b4 👇🏼
HE became HUUUUGE!
Not sure why they went in that direction ?
Maybe because it REALLY WAS a WICKED & kewl idea that someone RANDOMLY came up with?
After that not so focused on factor ….
Seems like all his cheesy solo stuff GOT TOO MUCH AIRPLAY !!!
& he became the most OVER SATURATED
Bubblegum type music POPstar on the planet for a oddly long long LOOONG time!
JUST saying …
I liked the cover of Presence a lot more than the album. It's obvious that the band didn't have their heart in it.
And some people love the album..
I like it
Heroin chic.
@duderama6750 Page wasn't able to maintain the level of quality he did on earlier albums due to his addiction. The layers of guitars are sadly missing, and the compositions were meh. Tea for One was a retread of a much better song.
That's why JPJ became more involved on the next album.
Wow. All I can say is all day long. Woooowse 😢🎉
Thank you for watching Justin, stay tuned for more!
I am guessing it took about the time it takes to turn to the next page to dismiss that cover.
Would have been a great improvement over the actual Trick of the Tail album cover. Which was a big let down for Genesis fans at the time, in addition to the Gabriel-less lyrics and lack of any concept.
Don't talk for me !
What don't you like from A trick of the tail's cover? Is it similar in color to Selling or you don't like the Animated characters?
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Selling England has a nice piece of art on it. My impression of Trick from the day it came out was it looked trite, and had none of the mystique or intelligent themes of the previous albums. Of course Banks played phenomenally on it, but without Gabriel they lost the themes, stories, clever lyrics, and animated voices.
@@paulbrookes413 Use all caps next time! Old man yells at chat!
You know all Genesis fans personally do you? If you’re speaking of their behalf you must do ! Personally I thought TOTT was an excellent cover and album Yes it lacked Gabriel’s presence but certainly still a great album nevertheless
The interview of Genesis and the sulking Tony Banks
