Me: What about your Swimming review?
Fantano: Swimming is an alright activity
Hot take: i dont think music itself is subjective however I do think the enjoyment of certain music is, and we tend to conflate the two
@@suena7288 what does this mean
@@suena7288 That might just be the most inane pointless hot take I ever did see. It's basically "Music isn't subjective but it is." It also implies that some music is objectively enjoyable which isn't true and that anyone with a mastery of music theory can make good music, since there are "objectively" good songs out there, which also has shown itself not to be true. Just because a song seems good on a technical level doesn't mean it'll be a good song just ask Eminem. It's like with artists if you're so technically talented that you can draw photorealistic people but that's it, chances are you'll end up displaying your work at a kiosk at the mall not in any museums.
@@edv.3788 it means for example if I say this song is better than this one you would have a valid argument (however we have to establish parameters otherwise it doesnt work) for example "Yoko Ono makes better Avant Garde music than Justin Bieber" i think is objectively true it doesnt mean her music is better however if someone says "I think Yoko Ono makes better music than Justin Bieber, that is subjective since its based off of enjoyment and not on something fixed like genre in my previous example.
@@suena7288 like if someone is entitled to their opinion on genres but music within certain genres is objectively better? I kind of get what you're saying, but I still don't think there's any way to objectively put one song over another even within genres. Someone might freaking LOVE terrible, out of tune guitar playing and you can't tell them they're wrong. It's all about opinion. I will agree that it's much easier to compare music within the same genre than to compare music from different genres. It's hard to argue exactly why Revolver is better than Illmatic or vice versa
My math teacher (who loves prog music) recommend that I listed to Steven Wilson’s the Raven. I did, and when I told him it was just okay, he was in pure unadulterated disbelief. I got to the point where he stopped recommending me music, and I think he was even harsher on some of my grades from then on. Lol

Can’t believe Damn being a 7 didn’t make it on here. Every album he reviewed that year was critiqued by if he rated it higher than Damn
But lowkey many agreed that it really wasnt kendrick’s best and many said that the score was fine or maybe an 8 but no where near gkmc and tpab
@@therogue1542 Yes but you have to remember Fantano reviewed Damn and Lil Pump's mixtape around roughly the same time and I believe Lil Pump's tape got a 7 or 8, so it's less about how Damn measured up to Kendrick's previous work, and almost entirely about how a Lil Pump mixtape was considered on par with Damn. This led Fantano to make subsequent videos explaining his scale is based on how much he liked the album, but given that some people saw Fantano as an objective music critic it was jarring to see that kind of inconsistency in his rating system.
He changed it to a 6
@Dre Taylor Fantano has said in the past that an artists previous work does affect their rating. He might compare an artist to other artists if there is obvious inspiration, but generally it’s only about what an artist has done before. So it makes sense that two different artists can have the same rating but different quality albums
@Dababy Jesus facts
The hilarious thing about the hate on the mbdtf is that, on a scale of 1 to 10, a 6 is trending towards positive feelings. It’s like saying “there’s a lot going on here and it’s done well but I don’t actually like how it sounds” which doesn’t actually feel too unfair. That said, the album is an 8 and you should give it a 9

I think a lot of people have heavy nostalgia for 2014 FHD, specifically "Wet Dreamz". I have vivid and fond memories of listening to Wet Dreamz in 8th grade, so the song means something to me and probably others as well. A middle or high schooler would obviously relate to the song a lot more than a 30-year-old man. Since melon doesn't have any strong nostalgia or emotional connections to the album, it's understandable why he only likes it a little bit.
oh yea how subjective and how objective are his reviews?
nah the album is just not that great lmao a 6 was a fair score

@@gavinwarner3480 The ratings are in relation to the artist, they are not an arbitrary scale. A 7 for Kendrick is fundamentally not the same as a 7 for Lil Pump, or any other artist. A 7 for DAMN is in reference to the 10 and the 9 and the 8 for Kendrick's previous projects.

"it's the jazz version of a thesis paper"
"I played it in high school"
Gonna let you put these two together
Compared to orchestral jazz like Kamasi Washington, snarky puppy is kinda flat and college-tier

His swimming review traumatized my eight beautiful sons
You not mentioning Saba - care for me is actually a crime
And Swimming
He knows what he’s doing with that one. He literally has not provided any substance to why he doesn’t like it past “it’s nothing special”

@@iamkeithheart he did, but still deserved another mention
In a future edition of this I'd like to see you go back over your review of Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens!
To be quite fair, if anyone asks me I'll say Hiatus Kaiyote is one of the coolest bands in the last few years, but in all honesty I seldom listen to the record itself. 99.9% of the time I prefer to listen to several of the great quality live recordings available on YT. I really don't care for the mixing in the album and just enjoy heavily the little touches they add on different performances while never going too far away from the original tone of the tunes...

@Jimmy Mac satire or no, the rape stuff is super over the top. Almost every single song centers around rape. Imagine watching a movie that is just rape scenes over and over. Kinda weird

Extremely shocked that the Swimming review didn’t make the cut 😂
Because he is scared to address it. He was always overly harsh on Mac. Gave him an 8 on Circles because he felt bad. If Mac was alive he would have given it a 3 or lower. Don't understand how he can like Circles more than Swimming because he has always hated Mac's singing. Swimming is nearly all rap while Circles is a lot of singing. Makes no sense how he gave them scores.
@@dionb7584 this is such a stupid comment. call Anthony’s reviews as anything but disingenuous as not. How he can like circles over swimming? It’s his opinion. Ps I prefer swimming over circles.
@@vietbeats_783 I have no problem if someone prefers Circles to Swimming. That's fine. It's just weird that he gave Circles a very good review considering he has hated Macs singing in the past. I love The Raven That Refused to Sing
It's a masterpiece. Easily some of the darkest music Steven Wilson has ever written.
It's a very solid album. I prefer HCE myself but I get why some people prefer The Raven.
Days Before Rodeo is supposed to or at least feels gritty, raw and really "muddy", some of the transitions, vocals and overall mix of the songs can sound really dirty, chaotic etc... but that's what i love about it so much, it's that "amateur" feel and it's with no doubt my favorite Travis project ever but i respect and i could see why someone could not like it because of that tough

I enjoy it, but no doubt it lacks a whole lot. Fantano was having high expectations and didn't like because Travis was hitting below his talent ceiling
“cole’s music appeals but doesn’t always impress” is perfectly said about j cole’s music. People were acting like he dropped black on both sides or something when in reality he just dropped an okay rap album
@Perverted Alchemist I used to be a cole Stan and this is 1000% true. He can drop a 12 track album full of songs to the level of Middle Child if he would stop staying true
funcrusher +
That’s what I’m saying jcole is not spectacular at all but he’s good
to me, J Cole and Big Sean are the two most mediocre rappers of their generation. They are literally as mid as mid gets; if you were to make a graph of every single rapper of the 2010s, from the underground to the mumble rap to the pop to whatever else, they would be dead centre in the middle of it all. I have never liked either (tho I Do It was admittedly pretty catchy when it first dropped). I think both of them are capable of much better music but both put out the most generic sounding, run of the mill, average (in terms of lyrics, production, and even voice) hip hop of the 2010s. I'm not a hater at all, I think they both have it in them to put out monster albums, I just haven't heard it yet. I could care less, either way, tho. I'm only here to say I never saw the hype in either, especially Cole.
@@WinedandDined27 the only reason there not mediocre is because there worst but jcole definently has great songs so what u said is definently a stretch even though his albums are so mid certain songs stand out to me in his discography

Damn that Snarky Puppy take probably made more people mad than any of these reviews lmao
I had to double take there, Snarky Puppy is one of my favorite groups. I don’t really see what there is to not like about them.
Especially talking about Sylva. Literally the best jazz record of the decade
@@brysonmiller3113, I suppose to me it's kind of derivative sounding (of what specifically I couldn't say, it just doesn't sound fresh when I listen to it). It's also painfully 'jammy', which many people, myself included, cannot stand. I admittedly have not heard every Snarky Puppy song, and Lingus has it's moments; I just can't get into them overall as a group.
If you bare with me, I think the best way of describing their sound to me is that it's less interesting than it is *trying* to sound interesting. The music to me sounds like they are saying "hey listen to us, aren't we cool?! you're supposed to like us!", which is what I think Anthony was getting at when he said it's jazz's equivalent to a college thesis. I guess it sounds somewhat superficial to my ear, kind of like the guy who we all know who isn't interesting/cool so he makes up for it by telling everyone how interesting/cool he is when we all know it's bullshit. As pseudo-intellectual as this sounds, it's as if they are telling me to like them rather than just giving me a reason to like them on my own--if that makes sense.
Lotta mumbo-jumbo in there, I know. But I am trying to give a well thought out reason as to why I, and perhaps other people don't particularly care for Snarky Puppy. I don't hate them, wouldn't be upset if they were playing in the background, but can't force myself to put them on for more than a couple minutes before getting tired of it.
And yes, I am a musician who can appreciate the technical ability, yes I am into all kinds of music, etc etc blah blah blah...
@@WinedandDined27 i can kinda see where you are coming from. However, I would say it’s the community surrounding the band that kinda has that atmosphere of insisting that you have to like them. Personally, I never really got that impression by the group themselves.
@@brysonmiller3113, I wasn't talking about the band verbally giving off that air or even doing so in their attitude--but rather instrumentally, musically. What's that thing people always say about Vampire Weekend? That their music sounds like what their fanbase looks like or something like that? Similar concept here.
Idk anything about the band themselves, it just sounds like when I hear a song from them it's the musical equivalent of some guy telling me how cool he is instead of just actually being cool and letting me figure it out for myself. The classic "show don't tell" deal, albeit a bit more nuanced and analogical in this instance.
And/or, to use the college thesis thing again, it's this perfectly written paper; grammar is on point, 10k words, lush vocabulary, etc. but isn't really saying anything. Kinda shallow, I suppose. Even tho they are talented, I guess I feel like any group of extremely competent musicians could do the same thing. We've all read stuff like that before whereas we're reading it we think for a brief moment that we're getting something of real poignancy or depth due to it seeming to be technically well written, only to realize it's just a bunch of big words that don't mean much at the end of the day. Nothing stuck with you, because the writer didn't actually have much to say, and instead was just sort of showing off his writing ability (think current Eminem). Not a perfect comp, but there are elements of what makes modern Eminem less pleasant than older Eminem in Snarky Puppy for me, along with the somewhat abstract "show don't tell" bit I previously iterated.
It feels weird to go so in-depth on why I DON'T like something, but when you stated you couldn't see how anyone could not like them it actually piqued my interest, seeing as I don't like them but never really pinpointed why specifically.
I thought it was courageous in a way to address these. There wasn't a lot of acknowledgment going on... That being said, it underlines the fact that reviews (even well informed, professional ones) are inherently subjective, and while we can gain some insight to be sure, we ultimately have to listen for ourselves to arrive at our own conclusions.
I’m a huge snarky puppy fan but it’s very funny that he described them as a jazz college thesis

I will never understand how someone can listen to the Hiatus Kaiyote record, listen to the Lil Pump record and come to the conclusion that the Lil Pump record is superior music. That's wild. No hate, that's just wild to me. The song Jekyll alone is better than Lil Pump's entire discography.
That's because that's not how his numbered ratings work. No one cares about this though lol. Like a 7 for lil pump is not equivalent to a 7 for Kendrick Lamar. DAMN. was a 7 FOR KENDRICK where as pumps tape was a 7 FOR HIM. One to one comparisons are the main reason why his reviews get so much flak 😂
@@sincereflowers3218 yeah I get that but at the same time it's never made sense to me.
@Jose Bernal ok so with that logic how do you rate a debut record? That's silly, he clearly doesn't do that. Their body of works has a little bit to do with the score but he's not grading on a curve most of the time he's just judging the individual album on its own merits.
@Jose Bernal it's more of a genre thing. Like Lil Pump is a 7/10 for a trap album, Hiatus Kaiyote Choose Your Weapon is a 6/10 Neo-Soul album, that's how he does it I think.
