IIRC Carrie sang this on the Grand Old Opry not long after she won American Idol. As she was finishing the song, Randy came out and surprised her praising her performance saying that she did a better job than he had. She was shocked by the appearance of one of her favorite performers and insisted that it wasn’t as good as his. It was a delightful beginning of a their friendship.

The great Randy Travis wrote and sang this song in 1987. It was great then but adding Carrie Underwood makes it even better.

Randy had already had 1 small stroke when thus was performed. Unfortunately, a short time later, he had a massive stroke that completely disabled him!! 😢
Ugh…so good! I miss late 80’s-90’s country music. IMO everyone sounds the same now and a lot of the country music now is a bit ‘pop’ for me, not all but a lot of it.

It is so sad that Randy's voice has been silenced. Also Linda Ronstadt silenced too early.
She has a nice strong voice but, no one can sing it like Randy Travis. It’s a song that can be sang with such emotion.
The fact that Carrie was just a contestant on American Idol, had not won yet...proves that she is doing exactly what she was meant to do. She is an amazing vocalist. Randy is a Country OG. ❤
I believe she won American idol a few years before this performance. She had come back to perform on the show and promote her latest records.
@katmit69 This was 2009 when they appeared together on American Idol to sing this song. Carrie won AI four years earlier in 2005.

Good reaction MrLBoyd. Unfortunately Randy was at the end of his singing and speaking ability. He unfortunately had several strokes. Carrie, of course could and can sing the phone book. Her gift is definitely singing.

I did not think he could sing that much. For a while he could not talk. Randy had a stroke, I will do some research, but he did sing much, and it was his hit.
This was after his mini stroke. He had a much larger one later.
