I've struggled with binge eating for a very long time. The Buddhist philosophy that what brings enjoyment will inevitably lead to suffering is one of the only things that has actually worked in helping the way I think about food. The anecdote of once you eat the pizza you are sad because you've experienced loss is so powerful.
All our experiences ultimately transform us...we can grow from every experience... even eating pizza... nothing is ever wasted... build up your Enlightenment... keep aiming for perfection...😇😇
Buddhism is life philosophy rather than religion. It teaches how to become peaceful, kind and compassionate towards all sentient beings. You're in right path! Best wishes!
@Nigel1048 This type of dialogue raises an interesting point (I think anyway lol)though at what point does "the religion" become just an underlying facet of ones personal morality? "immutable texts and immutable rituals" Surely all faiths are open to the interpretation of "the outsider"? At the end of the day are they not just competing "truth claims"?
False, Nigel. Buddhism is a COMBINATION of Philosophy and Religion. Why so ? Coz Buddha's Teachings were a Combination of Philosophy and Religion. The Philosophical Parts are the Topics like Dependent Origination, 3 Marks of Existence, 4 Noble Truths, Middle Way, Noble Eightfold Path, Mindfulness Meditation, Golden Rule of Morality, Non Attachment etc etc. These make Perfect Sense. So, you can't point to the Religious Topics like Rebirth, Realms of Existence etc and make the claim that Buddhism is Fundamentally a Religion. That's just Flawed Logic. It's what I like to call 'The Hundred Percent Fallacy' ...
It depends on how you look at it.To me it is religion.I grew up in generational Vajarayana Buddhists tradition family. It was pujas, rituals almost every three months beside everyday prayers.
@@tantrichill192 Buddha didn't care about Prayer. I think we should only care about Buddha's Own Teachings. They are quite different from what many Buddhists follow across the world. I think people should only care about Early Buddhism.

How can the Buddha love you. He is neither alive or a God. You can aspire to live like the Buddha and feel love and compassion, but I don't know if you should treat him like a God. I may be wrong though.
Yes, Buddhism teaches UNCONDITIONAL love, compassion, mercy and kindness to ALL sentient beings as such no one need to be a Buddhist to receive them [no need to be a member of a religious group]. We being humans extend those good wishes not only to humans but also to all sentient beings, the only teachings to do so in human history. As the followers of Buddha dhamma we are encouraged to pass on the unconditional love, compassion, kindness and mercy the Buddha gave us, and this goes to all evil doers too.

As I gaze out my sliding glass door on a sea of hazy-green, rain soaked trees - on this moisture morning. Sat. Nov 21, '20, Here in Hilo, Hawaii - I am healing thanks to this lovely video. Tho I do TM 2X/day, I will incorporate the nostril breathing in my day. I am motivated and inspired by Kelsang's discipline - that he devotes so much time to deepening his Buddhist practice. And the joy he gets from cherishing and nourishing others is simply wonderful. I will dedicate myself to more of his teachings.
What a beautiful picture to envisage Gary. Thank you for adding some light into my morning. I’ll be releasing part 2 of our conversation soon so do stay tuned. This is best explanation of happiness. Happiness is suffering. You can make suffering as happiness instead. No craving and no aversion leads to happiness, as no anticipation or expectation.
I’m currently a first year student in college in the epicenter of a city in America. I have no friends whom are in the same state as me, no family I am able to easily visit, no idea what I wish to do in life, and the constant worry of being stuck in this country doing the same things day in day out for the rest of my life, never finding long lasting happiness. It is through this video that has motivated me to try and visit the Buddhist center downtown sometime this week. It is through this video that my morning just that much less stressful and full of worry. It is through this video that I choose to try and try, and if it doesn’t work out then it will have been better than not trying at all and wondering if it could have worked out for the rest of my life. So, thank for this. Truly. It has made the beginning of my day much more bearable and less daunting. And for that I am infinitely grateful.
I thought this was an outstanding short film. You must take credit as an interviewer for taking the time to listen fully and ask intelligent and thought provoking questions. I think that the art of great interviewing it to listen and to fully reveal the message that your subject has to offer. Interviewing should not be about you but you are the conduit to bring the subject alive. You skilfully achieved this. Buddhism has so much to offer the modern world as it has for millennia. I could tell that you were changed by this encounter but in turn the interview has changed your audience. I would like to sincerely thank you for that.
I appreciate the thoughtful comment and I certainly was changed by this experience and all my podcasts for that matter. That's part of the reason I run the show, to learn and to share those teachings. I keep coming back to this wonderful video throughout my journey to buddhism. Gen Kelsang Dornying is such a lovely man and excellent teacher. I’d love for him to by my Lama. Today Dreamer hasn’t posted for a while, I hope he’s well.
What an amazing interview!! I meditate daily and I totally understand what Dornying said. Happiness is already within us within our hearts. Most of us don't know it's there and seek happiness outside of us. Dornying is an amazingly kind and compassionate monk. I have met him. Dornying, if you are reading this, I just want to say we miss you and thank you for your friendship. Hope to meet up with you again one day. Take care

His kind of explaining in layman's terms was very easy to grasp. The way he explained how by changing our view, we finally come to know that even happiness is suffering and that by changing our way of perceiving things we can always be peaceful was so beautifully explained. The example that he gave about the changing scenes outside of the moving train was very relatable

This monk has found the correct life. He is so lucky than majority of the people who are lost their true purpose, true happiness in their lives. Thank you so very much for sharing with us this true life. This is the exact reason we are born as human beings to understand the suffering of life birth to death and escape forever from this dangerous thing called life. Because we born only we are going through all these sufferings. Buddhism is the only way out from this upset. Buddhism teachers us to identify the myth of life and escape from it permanently. Buddhist meditation takes you on that path....
I've found this across a lot of Buddhist monk videos, they all seem to have the most soft-spoken manner of anyone I've ever seen. It looks and sounds like the peace they feel comes out through their tone and the words they use. I could listen to these people talk for the rest of my life, what a beautiful way to live.
I totally agree! There’s part two coming out soon so please stay tuned :) I’ve also put together a short survey to help me add more value to my listener’s experience with the show. Might you be open to filling one out? With appreciation and a smile, Michael
No it's a well known technique. When you speak low and soft people pay more attention and will be more likely to trust your words. Every cult uses it, peace has nothing to do with it.
I was asleep while some Buddhist videos were playing and I stumbled upon this waking up I hear a different perspective of the mind. I thank you very much. 🙏

"immutable texts and immutable rituals"
Surely all faiths are open to the interpretation of "the outsider"?
Kindness...Compassion...Love...and Joy are great pillars of ANY path. Book of Joy is almost a must read book of Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu.

Wei La thanks for your kind message ❤️🙏🏼🙂
Thank you very much for sharing this video Day Dreamer! It ignite some wisdoms within my awareness. I am grateful and sending my humble love to you brother. Namaste❤️🙏
One of the best meditation/buddhism interviews and meditation guidelines 👍

As I gaze out my sliding glass door on a sea of hazy-green, rain soaked trees - on this moisture morning. Sat. Nov 21, '20, Here in Hilo, Hawaii - I am healing thanks to this lovely video. Tho I do TM 2X/day, I will incorporate the nostril breathing in my day. I am motivated and inspired by Kelsang's discipline - that he devotes so much time to deepening his Buddhist practice. And the joy he gets from cherishing and nourishing others is simply wonderful. I will dedicate myself to more of his teachings.

Deseo y decreto que todas las personas que lean este mensaje sean felices y prósperas en todo sentido! ❤️

I just returned from an extraordinary retreat. Major spiritual and personal growth

Good Lord! This monk has intelligence, he’s articulate, has convictions, and has very important things to say. Thanks for posting.

No it's a well known technique. When you speak low and soft people pay more attention and will be more likely to trust your words. Every cult uses it, peace has nothing to do with it.

I must say, this is true in a lot of cases, BUT i CAN tell you that when i just let things happen and I am excited at the possibility of something happening but I think "its alright if its not good, as long as it doesn't hurt me" I'm almost never too disappointed. It doesnt send me into misery. I don't think that people need to be an extreme Buddhist but its good for cementing habits and ideas
Thanks for sharing your perspective Gabe. I also agree that everyone’s on their on individual journey and nobody’s needs to be anything. Much love brother 🙏🏼❤️🙂

Amazing content here. Even after the first thirty minutes of the video, the words exchanged between you two put my mind at ease. I come from a completely different faith, but what matters more is what this monk is saying: cultivate peace, train our minds. Which is something we should all aspire to do. I look forward to more content from you and will check his website as well. Thank you!
Yes I am an ex evangelical Christian who found peace in Buddha Dhamma
Erica thank you so much for opening up to the content and sharing your loving thoughts. I feel like no matter what our faith there are common patterns in life that once we recognise help us to live more meaningful lives for the betterment of others.

What a good podcast! No pretensions from both parties. Learned that a person needs to find, first, happiness within, via meditation. The rest is moot I guess (aka ‘passing scenes’). Keep up the good work!
johnny k Thanks Johnny. Appreciate you, your kind words and your engagement. I definitely believe in the “it all comes from within and radiates outwards” perspective. I would like to add that I believe this process can be helped along by many unique practices (sometimes even in a dance of collaboration with one another). I’m focusing on covering some of these throughout my newer episodes. Would love your thoughts and to hear how any experimentation goes along your journey. Thanks again for the kind encouragement 🙂☀️❤️
Today Dreamer - Looking forward to your new episodes. Your enquiring approach when interviewing your subject in this episode drew my attention and I learned something.
If you got time to know more about thaveda meditation - try the app ‘calm’ and key in ‘Mark zelinsky’. He had condensed the main ideas and included short meditation practices at the end of each session. I got a rough idea what thaveda meditation is about after hearing his summary. Cheers.
Today Dreamer Correction ~ the app is called ‘insight timer’ where mark zelinsky 10 day meditation program can be found. The app has an icon of a brass bowl. The app is not called calm. Sorry!
Wonderful discussion...Thank you!
