- Why LESS is MORE | A Monk Explains Minimalism
In a world where we are taught to want more and acquire more, Buddhist monks on the other hand, seek the opposite. We want less. (and please understand the word "want" with proper context). In this video, I wanted to share how having less can bring peace.
Many men from around the world have come to Thailand to ordain to be Buddhist monks, and many of them report that having less actually brought them inner peace. I wanted to share some insight into why that is. I hope you enjoy and can take this concept to apply to your daily life. #monks #monk #minimalist #buddhistmonks

What in your life do you NOT need and can get rid of?
Probably almost everything. I've gotten a lot more minimalistic as I've gotten older but I'm still holding onto things I don't really need. I need to be more mindful of the attachments I have to things.
@@rubykelley5581 wonderful. Thank you for the honesty Ruby :-)

Too many books. I need a clear out. But everything I have in my apartment I actually use.
My life has shown me the best way to rid of things you don't need.
I've moved several times over past 15 years , with each move my stuff was getting smaller and smaller , with each move I was becoming much more intentional with any purchase simply because I couldn't bare the thought of dragging any unnecessary burden with me should I need to move again , it came with an experience of having to pack and move a lot of unnecessary stuff at first, but it did eventually proven to teach me valuable lesson of being intentional with any idea of buying anything new
Absolutely agree with you Nick , less thing you own , less things you worry about
Simple things like drinking coffee, working out, walking my dog, and listening to music are enough to make me feel content and peaceful. It's the ability to appreciate the little things in life that make us feel whole.
Wonderful 😊😊
I 100% agree with this. My birthday was last week and I went to a garden and restaurant, and even though my birthday was amazing, I still prefer the smaller things. Drinking coffee, going to my local park and taking a walk, taking the bus to my doctor. These things bring me so much more fulfillment.
Green tea is better
Drinking coffee is not helpful for the body, stressing the body mind and affecting the body in many ways . It is promoted for business and sustained by sharks.

I'm currently living in a van with my girlfriend, and the process of condensing my belongings to the bare necessary has been very eye-opening. I had accumulated so many things; as a guitarist, I fell into "How many guitars do I need? Just one more" and ended up with 30 at one point. As a car/motorcycle lover I had five cars and five motorcycles, all needing various repairs and maintenance. I had twelve pairs of shoes and almost TWO HUNDRED tee shirts. I remember trying to sell and give things away, being surrounded by a sea of things that I thought I loved and needed to be happy... and feeling imprisoned. I was tied to a place I didn't want to be, drowinging in things that I have traded precious years of my life to own. As I continue living nomadically, I'm learning more and more what I really need to be happy and it is surprisingly not very much. I realize that the more things I get rid of, the more free I feel.
EXACTLY!

Did you keep at least your favorite guitar 🎸?
I’d have to have one guitar and one motorcycle.

@@TATNThisAintThatNetwork luckily I am fortunate enough to have friends and family that will hang onto some of them for me! I still have about a dozen, I'm currently selling most of those. Yes that is definitely the case. With less things we just have more time :-)

Beautiful James. We can learn from each other 😊
Me too James! Sometimes the Christian life can be very materialistic and I want to move away from that
If you haven’t, you should read about father Thomas Merton. He was a Catholic monk who studied Buddhism and Daoism and held both traditions in great respect. Protestantism doesn’t have a monastic tradition, but the tradition thrives in Catholicism and orthodox Christianity. While I encourage your desire to learn about the Dhamma, I also encourage you to learn from the monastic traditions of your own faith.
Sadhguru has nice videos on Christianity
@Awaken King I probably didn’t articulate myself very well. I didn’t mean I am materialistic and want to stop being so. I meant I wanted to move away from churches who promote materialism with the prosperity culture that seems inherent in most modern church teachings these days.
But yea I admit I’m not perfect and could definitely improve 👍 blessings and have a great day 🤗
Americans have storage units stuffed full to the brim with stuff. Stuff we don't even remember that we own. It's crazy. It's insane. It's psychotic. Your video is refreshing.
We purchase things in order to pay storage fees to keep them. Storage facilities are a multi million dollar industry. Go figure....
America is a young country now and very materialistic. When it is 1000 years old it MAY be a more spiritual land. Like the Asian culture.
Describes my dad. Took him months to move all his stuff into a 3 bedroom house with two living rooms and a shed and he Still has to build another shed for his stuff. Then a fire came and everything burned up. Life just isn’t about Stuff. Use stuff, love people. Don’t love stuff and use people 🙏🏻
Seeing minimalist video showed how storage places came to be and why families need bigger homes if they think do at time. storage places is just rental space for crap u forget u had and times it get sold to buyers if u stop paying the rent for the space. and some space has a mix of crap and good stuff that buyers can use or just sell anytime. and now why some homes are like huge cause the builders read families want space so u gonna pay more for space anytime. so untill u buy the house al at once u just renting til it paid off. but u still got bills to have needs while u live there anytime. but this video shows all we spend to maintain ourself anytime and why we go broke cause some or many feel u need so much cause try be like others anytime by chance.
Yes. So true! I am one who has a storage unit. My children are grown and I sold my house to live in a smaller place. I kept a few things for my children till they were settled. Now I'm getting rid of them. It's a process eliminating things and changing. I just no longer need or use all that I had. I took up so many hobbies for the benefit of others and my children. Now I get to enjoy passing my hobbies and "stuff" to others. ie. All my camping gear. I had 10 marvelous years camping with friends and family. And it was fun to accumulate. Now I'm ready to pass it on to another young family. ❤😊
Cheers!
Many times I saw rich people around me worrying about too many things and not having true happiness, I realized that being rich is not at all my goal. Now I'm searching for true wisdom, peaceful lifestyle through my habits.
Wonderful. Yes its so important to have a middle way. Excess is not so good :)
same
It's true what you say. Probably is we have a world economy based on people buying stuff. I read in France the government is passing a law that products must be or partly repairable. How many of us could repair a toaster, bike? The cars sold are mostly impossible to service so people have to go to a Ford dealer or equivalent. Jeff Amazon Besos is like the old East India Company that more or less created the British Empire through a monopoly on trade. If Amazon invests in a area the politicians are powerless to do or say much.
I had some rich friends and they never showed logos or talked about what they bought (they had grown up with money, professional families and never thought about it). In contrast I follow some friends (I've never met) on social media from countries like Jamaica, Ghana and other poorer countries. Often I see them or their kids and families posing for a photograph next to a SUV or something they don't own or a showing a mobile phone. There a logo on a shirt, dark sunglasses and a SUV means you are somebody to be taken seriously.
Hope we can move to different model. Though our politicians, even Biden now is reluctant to change the model.
@@simeonbanner6204 I see this in my own country the primary aspiration as being able to afford luxury goods instead of trying to achieve financial independence.
@@simeonbanner6204 I worked as a chauffeur for 5 years driving all kinds of rich or successful or influential or famous people. One of the things I noticed, of those that I drove to or from their homes, was how many of them had very little in their homes. Lots of empty space, and carefully chosen and arranged things here and there, and little else. They did live in nice homes with expensive things, but not very many things. Many of them seemed quite pragmatic about what they had, and that they probably didn’t go buy something new without considering whether they should first get rid of something else.
I didn’t grow up that way myself. I grew up in a relatively poor family, where everything seemed limited or hard to get, so you valued what you had and you took care of it, but you rarely got rid of it. I still have too many things to this day, but I still remember the lessons I learned from some of the “rich” people I worked for (and some of the lessons I learned from other “rich” people who had lots of things). I learned that I want to learn how to have less, and to be thoughtful and considered about what things I have and what things I want. I don’t actually want much.
This is a beautiful way of living. Monks are the original minimalists. We as humans will always want more, as long as there is someone else to compare to- it's seriously damaging and something we need to train our minds to stop doing
I am a Christian but I listened to this amazing man and his wise and beautiful words. His way of life is extremely simple but his wise words resonated with me and the struggles I am having with simplifying my life.
More is never enough!
It really is a never ending cycle :)
That is true for most, this is why individuals should be aware of their desires and know when this is becoming an addiction/sickness and have the will to put a stop on this.
There are many billionaires who know how to put a stop on their desires and don't have to.
Joshua Becker says, or quotes “if organizing worked, wouldn’t you be done by now?”
If less is more than nothing is everithing
Then what is enough?
After you remove the clutter and excess from your life, what is left over tells you who you really are.

Minimalism is the new communism. Stop it and live lavish.
I think as we age we understand this concept a little better. After the loss of both of my parents and having to deal with the possessions left behind in their estates I got a wake up call regarding, do we own our possessions or do they own us? I have simplified my own life getting rid of a lot of the chaos that surrounded me, which freed me from the stress of these items. Where will I store them, will I use them, can someone else make better use of them? I came up with my own "uniform" of sorts and considerably downsized my wardrobe to "uniforms" that fit my true and real life, instead of buying what fit the life I wanted to be living. I still have possessions but find far more peace in the space and nature than I ever did in the chaos that was my life filled with possessions. Thank you for explaining the difference between the lifestyles and for explaining minimalism more. I strive for a more minimal lifestyle but lack the discipline required for the lifestyle you have chosen.
Thank you so much for sharing my friend and sorry for your loss. Death really does put things in perspective.

I consider myself a menimalist now it’s the best feeling that’s why I clicked on this video
Another reason and the main reason we're suffering is because we create an identity and we try to maintain it everyday.
When you have mystical experiences or awakening, you see there is no more identity, no beliefs and you're totally free... It's an amazing experience

In December I ended up homeless in Seattle. It was a miserable and horrible experience. I was in a tent on a sidewalk.
But there was one big benefit of it: it forced me to get rid of everything I couldn't carry. Including my own ego.
It taught me a deeper compassion than I otherwise would have known. Now I spend most of my spare time advocating for the unhoused, helping them.
I was always kind of into minimalism, but found it hard to part with certain things I had clung to for over a decade. Or longer. This made me let go.
I was only homeless for a few days before getting help from my family and escaping it. But that experience may have been a turning point in my life that changed me.

@@cocofit9498 I think - well, I know - this is true for millions of people. Not living one's truth means u live your life based on what others are expecting you to be. The paradox is: When you love yourself because you are valuable just because of who you are beyond all the masks and external expectations - that makes you more able to be what others need you to be. But then it's real. Hehe - that's kinda deep. It doesn't matter if you don't have a nice car anymore. It doesn't matter if you don't have the largest house, it doesn't matter that you aren't rich - because you are truly rich when you are able to connect with yourself and the people around you - and in being that happy person, you get to make others happy.
Once again , an eye opener. I never think about the multiple "things" I own and the burden and worrying that each one carries. Thank you, Nick.
Thank you ❤️
This confirms what I have been doing and thinking a large portion of my own life. That is the TOP reason why I never sought out to purchase a vehicle for myself. The extra care needed for a vehicle I don't care about. It's funny how just in only 3 minutes of viewing this video I said out loud that "I like him" lol! I can feel the inner peace and love he has within him! Thank you for this video! I appreciate it.
I live in the small room!! No car. I only eat 1 meal a day!! I save I lot of money!! And I have more time to read more!!! Books 📚📚📚 this life is amazing!! Less worries,
But 1 meal a day is unhealthy
I agree I probably wouldn’t eat one meal a day, it’s hard at times... but I understand the concept. There’s a strange feeling about Not eating at meal times when you are genuinely not hungry. And letting your stomach Actually recover from a big meal instead of feeding it constantly. It feels lighter, more in control. More freeing. And you likely eat homemade and unprocessed more often
Go books! ;) I read physical books, kindle books, and audible books. It’s the only subscription I have
@@savannahrobbins8934 same!!!
@@excellent88 A lot of people do OMAD and intermittent fasting. They just pile their calories and nutritional needs into smaller eating windows, such as the one meal a day.
Nick, thank you for a good lesson. I'm a minimalist since 2019 and its a wonderfull time. I have a less problems, less stuff and more peace. I'm an introvert person and peace is my small temple. I love it.
Love this. I really want to come a monk. I love that lifestyle. I think of myself as a minimalist and and feel the pressure to look a certain way and do what I need to do top fit in but I am older now and all that seems so irrelevant because when I die I am not taking anything with me and I don't think any one says when they are dying they wished they bought those red shoes.Plus, I am exhausted!! I am trying to transition to a nomadic lifestyle where I can travel with only a backpack and be of service by offering what I have as a health and life coach. Even though I think I didn't own I lot I do. This has been inspiring and maybe today I can throw out those shoes I have not worn for five years. It's a start.
sadhu sadhu. thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂 and yes, it's so interesting how we keep things for such a long time and we don't even use it. haha
Hello there how is the weather
I never had to much to begin with as a child. When I was homeless a few years ago . I notice stuff is not that important.
Identify the essential, eliminate the rest, simple living high thinking 🙏
Yes, very nice :)
I intend to work on that today.
💥
when he said If you have less things, you have more time. I just ended my relationship and I have so much more time for me to reflect on my life through meditation and philosophy. It's so interesting to read philosophy like Lao tzu, stoichism, and Buddhism because they similarly teach about getting rid of external objects, and living with a content minimalist style and that possessions lead to this suffering including toxic people. Iv grown so much over the last 3 months, and let go of my toxic past, and really been able to love myself to the fullest!!!!!!! I think that's what the monk is teaching us. That we should be satisfied with our whole being and appreciate what we have rather than what we want.
Beautiful michael. Keep up the great work :-)
This is so beautiful. My daughter & I are downsizing to a studio from a nice, spacious 2 bdrm. I was feeling bad & getting depressed about it. I'm doing it to save money to buy a house for us. After watching this, I am so grateful. I donated all of my furniture, lots of clothes & stuff I do not use. Thank you for your wisdom. Divine timing. 🙏🙌
That's wonderful. I'm glad it was helpful :-)
Hello there how is the weather
Is so true that we all come into this world empty handed, we all leave this world empty handed.
2 Weeks ago I worked 2 jobs. Although the money was coming in, I found myself having career ideas I couldn't act on. The more it happened the more miserable I became. I finally decided to cut the 2nd job to act on my dreams. I've never felt happier making such a decision...
“Don’t have much” but have everything that truly matters…..blessings
sadhu sadhu. thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
The message I get is PEACE, STILLNESS, QUIET. and this is awesome. I probably will never become a monk but these words are so inspiring to me....
Hi there how is the weather
sadhu sadhu. thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
Such an infectious SMILE...I could listen to u forever...your gentle but direct delivery is so wonderful.. thank u thank u thank u for opening the door for this lay person whos searching for the courage to let things go...little by little ...so far so good 👍 Love from Sandyeggo!! ;)
Anything which is making me addicted towards it, I would always be away from those things, people & situation.. Since my childhood, I was never attracted to lavish lifestyle.... Having little awareness about ur looks is normal...but it never went to addiction & compulsion. Rather I was & am happy with simplicity & nature around me. Metta to you all lovely people. 🙏🌺🌷🌺
Hello there Always keep this beautiful smile on your face always
Thank you. Moving out takes so much energy. Going minimalistic is great, if you have a community giving you a place to sleep, clean up and eat.
We can do great together.
very enlightening vlog ! in the end what really matters most is how well you lived your life not the things you accumulated!!!
You're not wrong.
It's literally the task of minimalizing is a job of it's own.
I wish I could get rid of the vast majority of my stuff as responsibly as possible.
I'm not a fan of throwing things in a trash can.
I live in a van. I own very little. This way
I have more time to do yoga and meditate. My hair is easy. I don't cut it. I pull it back, done deal. I wash it with the same soap I wash my body with. easy.
🙏 I continue to practice introspection and minimalism daily. It’s been a true blessing for over a decade.
Wonderful work Jonathan! Keep it up 😊
I love people who have tons of money in their bank accounts but you’d think they made minimum wage by looking at them. They don’t try to prove anything to any one and have other avenues in life that make them happy rather than stuff. Also, while living this way, they meet others who do live on minimum wage and it makes them a more grounded, well-rounded, and sympathetic human to the point that they usually donate some of their money to public schools, parks, and community resources.
Thank you for this video. I have a bit of a shopping problem, I continue to search for new things, but the ironic thing is they never make me truly happy. And to be honest, it only brings more stress into my life. I am working on doing more yoga and meditating, moving my focus into a better direction! All of your videos and messages are so meaningful and special, thank you 🙂
Sadhu Sadhu 😊😊 thank you so much Julie. I'm glad it's helpful.
Hello there how is the weather
Yes Venerable Nick, letting go of possessions that possess us is indeed liberating. It has freed up space in my life so I can just enjoy each moment and concentrate on developing my spiritual life. Thank you for the lessons. I really appreciate you explaining to us how monks are trained. Once we know the different aspects of a monk's training in a monastery we can try to incorporate some of those aspects to our daily lives. Blessing to you.
Thank you so much 😊
I'm starting to embrace this lifestyle and it's refreshing. We're building a small home on the countryside and got rid of all unnecessary stuff. Can't wait to live this kind of life.
Oh that sounds beautiful Maria :-) congratulations on the new home.
His wisdom is so simple
"It takes many years to acquire simple wisdom"
Ahhhh the hair part spoke to me. I think I could happily live very simply but I can't bear the idea of shaving off my curly hair! I get it, hair brings problems, but I really like my hair!
Hello there how are is weather
Hello there Always keep this beautiful smile on your face always
Mr Monk I really appreciate these principles. I followed the teaching of Jesus to forsake the world, sell my possessions and give to the poor then live the life of self-denial. As you say it breaks the power of materialism and people pleasing and sets you free for deeper more spiritual life. Now I am a missionary in Africa and my life is very busy again but my attachment is still to the spiritual and I use all my time & resources to bring aid to broken and hurting and in this and deep relationship with God I find the greatest fulfillment :)
i commend you. I'm on a mission to do the same. Please share how can I get involved.?
@@happylifegrace4674 Do you mean involved with deeply following Jesus or involved with mission in Africa?
Thank you, Venerable Nick. You speak so wisely so everyone can understand, you have opened up so many ideas to me.

Hello there how is the weather
Since my mom passed and saw that she hoarded a lot of stuff, I too am trying to get rid of stuff. Watching your channel has help me in a lot of ways. I’m still in a process of thinking of ways to declutter and become a minimalist. I’m learning 🙏thank you
Thanks for this, I really needed this: hope you have a wonderful day today❤️
I love that you shared how you live your life with less. Thank you so much! This is enlightening and so helpful. 🌞
This is so true. I've been praying for a minivan or small cargo van so I can live in it full-time and be in nature and for the exact reason your talking about. Not everyone can understand what you're teaching and talking about. I'm a quiet person by nature and prefer to be by myself most of the time. Also because of my medical conditions I have to stay as calm as possible and I can't be under long periods of stress or a lot of stress. I appreciate and respect you sharing this and teaching this.
sadhu sadhu. thank you so much kimberly 🙂🙂🙂glad you enjoyed it.
You don't need to be a monk to experience the blissfulness of a monk.
I needed to hear this today. I don’t know how this showed up on my feed, but it was perfect.
Perfect timing mel :-) hope you enjoyed the video
Thank you, Nick. Your videos are immensely helpful in my ongoing transition into deeper spirituality. You are a crest jewel of compassion.❤️🌹💚🙏🏽
Wow I love your openness about your lifestyle. Such wisdom. The more you have, the more you have to take care of.
I don’t have a car for 8 years now and i’ve travelled more inspite of that. It’s so liberating not to spend money maintaining thar car anymore. And true that our time is very important. Owning less gives you more time for other valuable activities
I am 40 years old. I have not owned a car as well. I bought my very first smart phone when I was 35 and have a second one.
I have a family now with a kid. Car looks like a necessity to travel together. Renting as needed is not practical in the place I live. I have pressure from my other half as well. Minimalism is becoming a challenge.
Your work here, on youtube, is so important, brother! You gave us so much peace, so much insights, so much things to think about... I just love your voice, how you speak to us, how calm you are. I am really enjoying your videos and it's helping me a lot! Please, if it's possible (and if it's good for you, of course) never stop teaching us! I was kind looking for a master, a sifu to help me put my head on the right place... and now, I kind found you... I know that we have to be our own masters, but you are really helping me, anyway! Thank you so much!
Hi there how is the weather
Very nice video! “A life of peace.” That’s what we need!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I LOVED this video. I found minimalism 2 years ago. It’s been a wonderful, slow, steady journey. I am subscribing! Thank you Nick.
Thoughtful, for me. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I’m a woman who never thought of cutting my hair off (it’s long). But I DO see the benefits and to experience that alone in this lifetime might be something to enjoy as beneficial.
🙂🙂🙂
Yes, love this video! It resonates with me so much, I have just recently moved out of my parents home and feel like every item is a burden in my life. I have learned to live that there is so much I do not need and do not want! Thank you for the messages :) khàawp khun kha
Absolutely beautiful. So much freedom has the Buddhist life 🙏 and you are a beautiful speaker/teacher
You are great! I hope you put a lot of these out!
I love your videos!..
It teaches me so much about how to be more peaceful in life…
It’s great how you are explaining to us everything good about monastic life and minimalism from a monks perspective.
I’m so thankful!☺️
Awww thank you so much my friend. That's very kind of you. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos :)
