Hi, Nick, thank you for sharing. I need ALL, of course I’m doing well from time to time, but there is no consistency. I choose the most urgent: go to bed in time. The others will follow.

My mental health crashed 3 weeks ago, just under 3 weeks ago I walked past a man dressed in orange, something I’d never seen before. I googled what dressing in orange meant. The algorithm must have informed RUclips. So when I went onto RUclips, there you were. Within two days of coming out of hospital, I’ve had you by my side listening to your advice, I wasn’t left alone. It’s a strange turn of events. Thank you so much 🙏

I realised yesterday that I love waking up before the world. I pack my husband's lunch, decide what I will cook for dinner, have quiet time, study and be there to greet him when he leaves for work. Then I go outside for some sunshine and be present for my little adopted girl who studies online through UCT. I am from Cape Town and have followed you for so many years. I like that you don't take yourself too seriously. I learnt not to be so ainal after watching your videos. I appreciate your effort. Thank you Nick.

Fixing my sleep would help with all the others!

  • @jfdb59
    @jfdb59 Год назад +52

The sleep routine is HUGE. I have finally got this set in stone, but it took me many years of staying up too late, not getting enough sleep and then being tired and cranky. Trying to do too much, and being overstimulated. The sleep routine starts one to two hours before bed time. Plants lights go off, night lights go on. The nature sounds I play almost 24/7 shift from day sounds to night sounds (corresponding to the season), shades get drawn when the days are long so as to create the atmosphere for it. Even as I type this my 4 year old daughter is nodding off waiting for me to finish writing. We are in bed about 7:30-8. I try to meditate until 8:30, then go to sleep by 9 EVERY night and I get up at 5 (sometimes six on Saturday). This gives me a solid 8 hours. Do not skip the routine on weekends. Every night is the same. I used to like staying up late on the weekends but the time I gained was lost in the morning with sleeping in. Now I find I enjoy the early mornings far more where I can sit in quiet stillness and contemplation since the city is still sleeping in from staying up too late. So the world is mine. Peers I work with that struggle with mental health (which is pretty much everyone now) I tell the same; try a consistent proper night's sleep and a healthful diet, it will transform your life more than any medication and therapy.

I have been playing this video every morning right after getting up since last 6-7 months. And after walking 4 miles e veryday (2 miles in the morning & 2 miles in the evening) I clean my apartment (with a broom) & toilet & take a cold shower followed by 10 min long meditation each time. Besides, I have made a habit of following a strict eating schedule, breakfast between 7:30-8:00, lunch between 11:30-12:00 & dinner at 5:00 pm. I have stopped eating solid food after 6 pm and although first few days I found it very difficult eventually it has helped me immensely, both physically and mentally. The change in overall routine has completely changed my life for the better. I have a good night’s sleep, less worries about my life, least expectation, never hesitate to show my gratitude to the people in my life. I restarted my old habit of maintaining my journal. I have been following your channel since last year and I cannot express in words how grateful I really am. I am not perfect but I believe I have become a better human being than I was a year ago. Thank you very much for being there for people like me.

Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging words. It means a lot to me. Previously, I used to have late lunch in the afternoon around 2 pm, dinner late at night around 10:00-10:30; I hardly did any morning exercise, no meditation, and now I can feel the difference between the past and the present states of mind. Since last May until Dec 31, 2023 I walked almost 900 miles (my app showed), and I felt proud of myself. :)
Last year was one of the worst phase of my life and that is when I have found this path through this channel. The Buddhist path taught me that embracing pain and suffering is the only way to find peace because there is no going around. I have learned to accept things as they are without any sugarcoating, that helps to see things clearly and let go of things that is not in my control. This very simple rule can change anyone’s life for the better, I can say it from my own experience. I still have my own problems and anxieties, everyone does. But the awareness helps us face our problems with calmness. And every time I find myself in a difficult situation I simply click any of your videos and find my answer in them. Now I shut down my laptop every night before sleeping and start it once I wake up, it is to remind myself that everyday is a new day, a new beginning and there is actually no need to carry yesterday’s burden. Same with starting the cold shower particularly since Jan 1 this year- initially I would wait for a few seconds to enter but gradually it improved; I tell myself that nothing is permanent and this cold water (I am in Baltimore, USA) is there to help me. Eventually my evening showers too had become cold showers and I began to enjoy it instead of fearing the cold water, now it feels like meeting a caring friend twice daily. And to be honest, it gave me immense mental peace. These are small things but now I realize that they matter a lot more than I had thought previously. And if I get anxious sometimes, I recall how you say “It’s okay.” I think, being anxious, feeling sad or angry or depressed at times only make us human beings, there is nothing wrong about experiencing them because there is no escape. But how we respond to those feelings is in our control and that is what one needs to practice daily. My sincere gratitude once again. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am telling this first thing to my husband for a really long time because as kids I'm trained to sleep at 9pm . The world used to shut around me at 8 at night . It was new to me to experience waking up late and I can never get into habit of staying up late. Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise😅🙏❤️🎉 my uncle has his gym in the house and seeing that growing up made me think it's really a part of life to do excercise. I choose yoga and meditation by myself at the age of 16 after trying all kinds of exercises. Having these 3 habits already, my hormones were so balanced that I used to eat less and granny was strict abt lunch time only. I feel beyond lucky being born in a house where all these habits were part of everyday life and routine. ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏 I'm always thankful to my elders at each and every step of my life for bringing all good habits to my life with love.

I recently retired and my daily rituals have been thrown into a bit of chaos after having good habits/rituals for many years. When working, I found that my work hours were like an anchor, before which and after which, I had a chain of habits including exercise, meditation, etc., and now, even though I have more time, I'm struggling. Thanks for this motivation to work toward establishing some new daily rituals.

In Ayurveda they say: “Your day starts the night before”. I highly respect wisdom of Ayurveda, so I couldn’t agree more.
I recently found out that I have ADHD (going to bed late is very common among ADHDers). So I enjoy going to bed late as it is very peaceful and quiet at nighttime, as there are far less distractions.
I am working on going to bed earlier, and I have made some progress. When I succeed at getting up early, I am far more “efficient” the next morning, in every way. And the body loves the stability of a nighttime routine.
ADHD also means having a hyperactive mind, even if you are not physically hyperactive (as it is in my case), and I am not in favor of meds for ADHD. I would rather change my schedule.

I'm ADHD too & I can 100% relate! My "to do " list is about 5 miles LONG! NO JOKE! I wake up and so much anxiety and frustration and overwhelmed in I just think of the billions and trillions of things I must do and they're all seem just as important as the other I mean what do I do go get my license picture done or should I you know call the mortgage company that I'm behind on* 8 months also I needed to get my license picture done since April and it's now the end of August and September basically September so I mean I don't know it and that's just two two times that times like a thousand others to do that are like just as important as that! Although you may not accomplish all three the next day, it helps you keep track of priorities and you'll be able to easily carry over any unfinished items to the next day! You can train yourself to establish this habit annd you will not regret it - it will help you! Good luck.@@michelemarch2562

If you sleep on the side like me you can exploit that, bcs the ear that rests on the pillow is soundproofed. Now the other ear must be soundproofed similarly with something that absorbs all sounds, like a sideways "pillow hat" with straps that go all around the head. Blasted neighbors, if they don't respect people they should be kicked out and live in a barn like loud animals 😁 They make things difficult for your landlord if you have one so better that they move than everybody else. Wishing you peace and silent sleep.

@@TraceB Earplugs do nothing for me as well, but they can be used in combination with my advice. To give a better description, take a look at college wrestlers ear protection. It can be bought, enhanced and adapted with felt + bubble wrap etc. so you can have a really good nights sleep. It will not come loose if turning over. Remove the one where the ear rests on the pillow, sew it together and tada - silence is yours! It looks weird but sleep is adamant to health 😴

Personally I think I got to work more on meditation, and I hope it can help me to moderate my screen time.
I find that I have been leaning on screen time as a clutch to cope with work stresses. Even on days when I need not do urgent work at night, I don’t sleep as early as I would like to, and that make waking up early to have a good and consistent morning routine hard. Diving into work first thing in the morning isn’t the best way to keep a healthy separation between work and life.

I may modify it a bit like go to bed a 11 instead of 10 and get up at 5 instead of 4 and eat at 9 AM instead of 7 and then eat at 1:30 to be done at 2 instead of eating at noon. I like the making the bed and cleaning too. When do you meditate and do you ever take a nap or just use meditation? Please get back to me.

It was a process however to accomplish and to get used to. It also helped that I had become an empty nester so I wasn’t cooking for a big family anymore. 👍🏼🌎☀️💙….btw…I do have a coffee in the morning and I may have a banana or I allow myself to eat strawberries out of my garden or a tomato out of my garden or chew on a piece of garlic ect…during the day if I feel like it. Some days I do not.

Great advice, Nick, thank you! 😊 One point that I still have to learn to follow is to eat with moderation. Today I cooked a meal for my parents and myself (cold noodles with sauce and cucumbers) which was very delicious. Unfortunately I cooked a bit too much because I don’t have enough experience in cooking for more than one person and we almost ate all the noodles except for a little bit. But I also made an interesting experience: It took me a lot of will power and it wasn’t easy for me but now I feel much better than if I hadn’t cooked.
