On Day 4 in South Korea, we decided to take a day trip to Nami Island, which is a famous touristy island a couple hours away from Seoul. Once we arrived, we had a dish called dak galbi. It was an alright day, but not my favorite.
00:24 Metro to Gapyeong Station - 2,250 Won ($1.90) - One of the things that truly amazing me about Seoul is that the public Metro / Subway is incredibly extensive. You can even travel for hours and get way out of the city, but still using the Seoul Metro. On this trip it literally took us about 2 full hours to arrive to Gapyeong Station. We made a couple transfers, but eventually made it, and had to take a quick taxi ride to Nami Pier.
1:48 Dak Galbi (닭갈비) - For lunch, before taking the boat across the Nami Island, we stopped at a restaurant near the pier to eat a Korean dish called Dak Galbi (닭갈비), which is chicken and cabbage with rice caked all cooked on a huge pan in front of you with lots of sweet chili paste. It was a lot of fun to eat and cook, but I’m not a huge fan of the sweet chili paste. I usually prefer the sour and spicy chili as opposed to the sweet chili paste. But still, it was a fun meal and dak galbi is a popular Korean food especially with the younger generation. Total price - 46,000 Won ($38.92) for 4
5:54 Nami Island (Namiseom Island 남이섬 종합휴양지) - 10,000 Won ($8.46) per person - After lunch we walked over to the Nami Island pier, bought out tickets, and then took the ferry boat to the island. Nami Island is mostly famous because it was featured on some Korean movies and tv shows, I think. Overall, it was very touristy, and it was just kind of like a nice park, but it was so busy. The best thing about visiting Nami Island for me was eating a skewer of grilled lamb with cumin, wow that was good.
For dinner, we just went into Lotte Supermarket and bought some groceries and ate at home in our apartment.

I really love how honest you are with everything. Like when food is just meh, or that you wouldn't recommend a certain place if you're only there for a few days. That is super super helpful and really appreciated. You don't act like everything is super good and that what makes you awesome
you know the food isn't that good when mark just nodding his head fast like that..when he go slow with nodding you know it's good ..hahaha XD
mark's face when try some food is just like an open book hahahaha..... and the face is trustable LOL
aini popo hahaha ikr! ..it's good that he's always being honest with food
I noticed that as well😉
True......
and when he really closes his eyes and leans to the side is when you know the food is realllyyy good
Thank you, for your honest opinion on food and tourist spots. I wish more people made honest videos, in general.
I've been binge watching Mark's videos and what I really appreciate about watching his videos in Korea is that most of the places that he goes to are not the most popular, fancy, well-known places. It means that he is likely to be in restaurants where any other visitor to Korea can end up going to, and this represents the kind of experience that anyone who visits can expect and get
I know that Mark has a Migrationalogy t-shirt saying "If it's not spicy I'm not eating".
Maybe it's time to add other set of design "If it's touristy I'm not going" :D
That's SO him. Yet his reputation has been tarnished a bit in the Jordan trip. Lots of touristic restaurants and no spicy food 😅
I'm not gonna put it that way. Mark's vlogs are still good in my opinion, and to be honest I also enjoyed watching his Jordan trip. He may not appreciate touristy places, but he's a food lover.
He is not wrong, sometimes the tourist part are just not that awesome. Like i went to the eiffel tower, it was okay for the pictures but nothing amazing since they have no animation nothing. Just silence and tourists taking pics with 2 army guys. So i kinda trust him on these points
Fay E but if u visit the island on wintertime, u will appreciate the coffee shop nearby as I did when I went there and just go into the coffee shop for both coffee and warmth instead of taking pictures around 😀😀😀😁😁😅
Red Hood is
All the side dishes they serve in Korea. That would keep me happy for a long time. Looked so delicious. The lamb skewer, yum.
Thanks Janice!
Oh well. Every single day can't be a winner, Mark. Great video nonetheless. 👍
Thanks Tosh!
"Dak Galbi" in Arabic means " beat of my heart" 😂😂😂😂
Aww I love that
That Chili paste is so delicious. So much flavor and it goes so well with Cabbage.
Nice video~but, Nami island might not be tour spot because there is a place for rest with fresh air.You would rather go cheonggyecheon in seoul. When the weather is hot, your foot can take a rest in very clean water.
the best thing about Dak Galbi is the rice, that they add and fry with the remaining sauce and veggies ..... People go there for that and not for the chicken .... you missed the highlight 😢
I love how they use lettuce instead of bread! It’s cheaper and lower in simple carbohydrates and it is good for those that are on a paleo or kinetic diets! I look forward to visiting Asia.
Definitely, the best part is his expressions after putting food in mouth!!
The food is one of the best foods in Korea!
Hope you and your family enjoy Korean food and culture.
FYI Nami island is popular due to the Korean drama that was filled
There. Winter sonata
dak galbi with cheese toppin was lit!!!!
I'm so happy Mark decided to be honest about the first food he tasted in this video because those of us who watch him regularly, we knew it wasn't his favorite.. How? because everyone knows if you don't see the eyes roll up, the slow lean to the left.. it's not that good.. lolol...
the food was delicious and beautiful scenery
Mark and Ying, Enjoyed the scenery. Of course the food looks good. You are fast approaching 500,000 subs! Wow, I remember when you were at 15,000. Great job. Well done. :)
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Omari Finn Instablaster :)
@Rex Kaiser Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and im in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Rex Kaiser It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account !
@Omari Finn Glad I could help :)
Awsome trees on Nami Island !
Been to Nami Island myself. You captured it really well. Can be beautiful but extremely touristy. You should have had the Dak Galbi on the island. Delish.
Mark! The best part of eating Dak Galbi is the fried rice that they cook with your left over sauce. I think you pay extra $1 or $2 and order it and they will cook it for you. They will add some seaweed and some other stuff to the fried rice. :)
I actually found a lot of awesome local restaurants on TripAdvisor app.
That 15 degree tilt to the right is pretty funny to see after every bite you take. 🔥
Ying and her sisters are all so beautiful! Skin condition on fleek.
Korea is so clean 😍
Nami Island is one of the most beautiful places in South Korea!
And Dak Galbi means spicy chicken meat. It is one of my favorite Korean food!if I can meet a beautiful girlfriend, I want to go to the place. it is a very good place to walk with your lover.
As I told you on the other day, I am looking forward to watching you try SAMGYETANG! lol
Coming!
Oh yeh? You never disappointed me~ lol
닭갈비 상추삼싸서 양파에 쌈장~~제대로 드실줄아시네요~~어메이징한 한국음식 셀수없이 많아요~ 맛있는거 많이드세요
The very first food on the video we ate that like 2 weeks ago .it was so good !
Mark hates the crowded island too. but he is a trooper and the lamb skewer has helped.
They were supposed to add rice, kimchi, dried seaweed, mozzarella cheese and other stuff for some fried rice afterward. The best part that you would've appreciated...
It's call mulkimchi! It normally contain water, radish, carrot, green onion, garlic, ginger, salt, and green or red slice Chile.
I always get excited when you upload a video! It's not just the various cultures and food that I love watching, but also your enthusiasm and passion with what you do. Don't ever stop sharing your experiences Mark!
Thank you very much Nilo!
I saw the title that you will go to Nami Island, I knew right away that you won't enjoy it haha
이분 뭐야 진짜 한국을 느끼고 맛있는거 드셨네 배고프다
인도 여행보다가 한국 편 보니, 어메이징 하구만...
i cant stop watching this channel
I can tell when he doesn’t like his food 🤣😂
Very polite still...
Mark your videos are amazing. Always make me hungry when i watch them.
Mark Mark Mark thank you for this video and thank you for everyday video
thanks for telling me abt the island being too touristy so I won't go on my next trip next spring....but as always Mark you are a truly wonderful person and your videos always brightens up everyone....the food too.
I wish Mark had a Korean friend who can show him around and explain him how to eat these food.
The Nani island lamb skewer at $2.54 is not that expensive for a tourist spot when compared to the uk that would cost about £3.50-4.00
Yeah, seems like a fair and normal price not even specifically for a tourist area to me here in the States as well. I don't think I would want to stop at just one, but then, he does have a job to do. Cheers.
Hi Mark, you look great :) You travelled more place than me lol. I am going back to Korea this Friday for 4 weeks. Yay can't wait. Escaping winter in NZ!! Thanks for posting 남이섬(nami island)
Your videos are awesome but your facial expressions after eating delicious food is priceless 😂😂
Those trees are in some korean dramas I see but 2 hours is a long time to get there lol looking forward to more food eat outs :)
The park was beautiful, and busy. It looked like they sweep the dirt! LOL fun none the less. Enjoy traveling with you guys!
Everything looked delicious. I knew you didn't think much of the island. I wouldn't have either with all of the tourists and selfies going on. Another great vlog.
Mark you missed fried rice! The best part of Dak Galbi!
Omg Heck yes 😋
exactly !!
Koreans, me including, eat Dak Galbi for the fried rice, not for Dak Galbi most of the time :)
i could easily discern u if u don't like the food as well as the place tho u're still all smile in ur video!
..u're such an honest guy..GODBLESS u
hey man. it seems you are still in the seoul city and having a good time. I'm currently living near the jongro area. and got amazing awesome gobchang(곱창) restaurant which is just 2min away from main insadong street. if you have any interest in it, you can just reply it. as a hotel receptionist guiding foreigners all the time and with my experience, the place is good.
Well done Mark unlike comparable videos you provide the viewer where you are and more details needed to the viewer to bring them into the video
The look on your face is priceless when you taste something great for the first time! I see why you have over a million subscribers!
thank you and Ying for all your work in Making these videos and bringing all of this us so far away...sooo love your videos and appreciate all of them....

I love your channel Mark! My girlfriend and I are in Seoul too. We love exploring food & love your videos. They help us find the best eats all around the world. :)
Oh Mark, you never like sweet things..haha ☺️
Seoul street food very nice👍💯 good video👍💖😍
You should show us, how you cook at home.
He made a couple videos showing his cooking
Dak Galbi is my absolute favourite Korean food. .....well and Samyeopsal....welll and tteokbokki....and chimaek
You need to have dak galbi in Chuncheon.
Colorful and picturesque. Quite an interesting journey!
*I was getting foodgasmic withdrawals waiting for day 4, great day outdoors Mark, Ying & company! LOL*
*The South Koreans are very smart they have the tourist cook while the chef lays back with a smile! LOL*
Nami island is famous because of Winter sonata drama....i wanna really visit it one day....
I went to Nami Island before and it's very touristy as you said.
Nami Island is great looking when it's Winter Season :)
#WinterSonata
Perfect
I love korea
I JUST REALISED I WENT TO NAMI ISLAND WHEN I VISITED KOREA IN 2014 DURING THE WINTER TIME. IT WAS SO COLD.
The only reason why Nami island became a popular spot was because it was a place of a really famous korean soap opera. For those who have watched it, naturally we would want to go there. But for those who never watched it, there is no point because I don't think you will appreciate the things there. Having watched the soap opera and went to the island, I really enjoyed it there and the sights are beautiful.
The concept of cooking your own food in the restaurant feels oddly satisfying.
As somone who's lived in Korea for over a decade, it's actually reassuring to see and hear Mark's honest yet respectful responses in this video. I've been to Nami Island and let me tell you, this is the last place I'd take anyone I know who's come to visit Korea. It's a tourist trap with nothing worth seeing/experiencing. Feel bad that Mark had to experience this side of Korea but glad others who watch his vids will get his hints and stay away from the island. Also, the style of dalkgalbi he had isn't really my thing either. I'd much rather have the charcoal grilled version of dalkgalbi, called 숯불닭갈비 "Seuht-bool dalk gal bi" and I wish he had tried that instead cuz nearby Chuncheon has some of the best there is in Korea. It seriously baffles my mind that this place is always near the top of the recommended tourist attractions when you google things to do in Korea...
U didnt like the lunch that much ...I understood from ur expression 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha you looked so happy always cheers me up Mark.
Thats the key
Korean food is diverse, but especially the soup culture and meat seem to be characterized by lettuce wraps. And there are so many different side dishes(specially various types of Kimchi) that go well with rice.
hey mark! the cold brine soup you drank is actually cold water radish, they also make water kimchi too!
Hey Mark, the cold clear broth or soup is actually juice from the white kimchi. It's incredibly refreshing and tangy and goes well with the spicy and the sweetness of the dakgalbi.
I think I would have been disappointed with the island given the extent of the trip that you need to get there but as always I enjoyed your video
Thanks Derek, yah I was as well!
Mark is low key throwing some shades at the place lol "with a designated selfie place every few feet"...
mark, im so glad i randomly click one of your videos. you are so delightful so watch.
south Korean food is the best food. i want to try 😣
Oh trust me Korean food is the best Asian food I'm not just saying that because I'm Korean I've tried all different types of Asian food but Korean food is the best we cook with love and soul 😋
@@lauraluffman6177 marry me
@@dheerajb315 lol ☺
i like his face when he takes a bite it's like a chubby cute glow in his eyes
oh man korea is so awesome, dreaming with traveling there one time and preparing my stomach for all those spicy sauce.
I love all his videos and his expressions
Ha! Mark finally doesn't like something he eats and it ends up being something that I really like :-P Nami has a historical and cultural significance, a Korean hero who was killed by some king is buried there, it was named after him.... and it's also significant because of the reforestation that took place there. Also, a lot of the money raised goes to charities and UNICEF
I actually like the sweet chili paste. I put the onions on the grill though, nice cooked with the chicken.
Haha, once you put that rice cake in your mouth I thought to myself, "oh, that's going to be hot". Then your eyes confirmed it was hot! Nice video Mark, the food looked delicious, and that skewer on the island looked yummy!
Awesome! Thank you for making this video! I am planning to visit seoul and is good to see what to expect
Mark Wiens, thank you so much for all of your vlogs. I would say good job and keep up the good work. Your videos deserve to watch.
Love your videos always
Like how Mark says Dak Galbi with a Thai accent!
Haha, I think I say everything with a Thai accent now!
nami island is definitely a too touristy place, it's true because many of indonesians love to go there
The way you talk is very easy to understand! Amazing! Hope you have a great time in Korea.
WYB I just did a search on dak galbi in Toronto and found a few serving it in Toronto's Korea Town, less than a mile from me. I'll wait until it gets cooler before trying it, but try it I will.
it's really nice country south Korea
I like this one
haven't seen you upload in days Mark. Glad its back!
uploads are sunday and wednesday lol
Gosto de ver voce comendo essas comida e sempre sorrindo ,❤️❤️🇧🇷
Thank you very much for the video Mark.

Mark, my mom just LOVES your videos. So much so that Jamie Oliver who has been her very favourite chefs belongs to the past. You are entertaining, vibrant, HAPPY and a great joy to see ans listen to.
IAnd her English is not so good. Your lovely viseos seem to be great even without understanding you completely.
She hopes that your baby is always given some vegetable stick while he or she watches you eat the delicious food.
Wishing you all the best, Happy christmas from my mom and I, Love from Copenhagen, Denmark
