    LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Welcome to LA and more specifically Koreatown or K-Town, which is one of the biggest areas of Korean food and culture outside of Korea. Today, I’m hanging out with my friend Steve from ‪@RockstarEater‬ , and we’re taking you on an ultimate and unforgettable Korean food tour of Los Angeles - Koreatown. In Part 1, we’re eating amazing hand made noodles and dumplings and kimchi, and one of the most insanely delicious Korean restaurants in the city. Let’s get started!
    So even though it was all in one day, it was such an extreme day of eating Korean food that I had to divide the video into two parts. This is Part 1, and stay tuned for Part 2 when we eat some of the best Korean bbq in K-Town.
    Here’s where we ate:
    Mdk Noodles (Myung Dong Kyoja) (g.page/mdknood...) - This is one of the legendary restaurants in Koreatown Los Angeles for fresh made noodles and Korean dumplings. They make everything fresh and the flavors are fantastic. A technique I learned was to take a piece of fresh kimchi, and wrap a mandu dumpling into the kimchi before taking your bite. I’ll never eat another mandu without kimchi again! The noodles were also spectacular and I especially loved the green noodles with all the toppings. Thanks to my friend Jeffrey Merrihue ( / jeffrey_merrihue ) for joining us for breakfast.
    Soban (g.page/SobanLA...) - Next up on this ultimate Korean food tour we went to Soban, one of the legendary restaurants of Los Angeles, and one of Jonathan Gold’s favorites, so it was an honor to have a chance to eat here. The owners were so welcoming and invited us into the kitchen to watch them cook. What I can immediately tell you is that it was one of the most magical displays of Korean food cooking that I’ve ever seen. And the food was just as good as the cooking, so much flavor and such a huge variety of dishes. This is the ultimate home-style Korean food meal in Los Angeles.
    And that completes Part 1 of this extreme Korean food tour of LA. Keep watching Part 2 to see Korean BBQ!

    Korea should thank all the Korean Mukbang RUclipsrs out there for showing the world their amazing gastronomy. Many of us knew a few dishes for sure, but their cuisine has been a hidden gem for most people, compared to other asian countries'. Their food is delicious, and they deserve the attention they've been receiving these recent years.

    • @nom928
      @nom928 2 года назад +13

      I'm curious how Korean mukbangers managed to spread their subculture internationally (intentional or not) and I guess it's thanks to video hosting/streaming platforms as well as social media? Besides them though, I think it's also due in part to other aspects of the Korean Wave such as K-dramas and K-pop idol livestreams/variety shows where Korean food is often shown being consumed.

    • @Oneonly746
      @Oneonly746 2 года назад +15

      @@nom928 honestly mukbang was just a thing in korea. Koreans have a huge food culture and they love eating "together" which is why mukbang just set in so naturally with koreans. They never thought that it was going to gain so much international attention and they didnt really even try to spread it outside korea. This is actually the same for K drama, k pop, k food, etc. As youtube and other streaming services came along people just started noticing "korea" like a whole new trend that popped up out of nowhere, but they've just been there this entire time. All these "K" whatever is just the lifestyle koreans acted on for ages. Even koreans are surprised and overwhelmed by all the attention lol.

      Mark has a HIGH METABOLISM. But I sometimes think, he must be SMOKING some very good BUD, OFF CAMERA, for him to DEVOUR the amount of food he eats in 1 day. Also MARK eats such a VARIETY of HIGH QUALITY FOOD, and he has a WORK OUT REGIMENT. INCLUDING all of the walking he does when he visits different places. Also he suppliments ALL THE FOOD HE eats by eating LOTS of VEGETABLES. But it is UNCANNY that he isn't overweight, with the AMOUNT of PORK he eats.

      Korean food is very savory as it uses a lot of layers. Fish sauce, Soy sauce, RIce syrupt, Sesame oil , Chili peppers (not as hot as you think more of a sweet pepper) are the main foundations of most. It's accompanied by sides which usually consist of nappa cabbage kimchi (a fermented cabbage that is tart, crisp, refreshing, acquired taste for some depending on what kimchi you start out with - if you get a good one itll take less time if u get a bad one u will be put off for years like me lol) You can basically kimchi most vegetables so theres not only one type of kimchi (radish kimchi, green onion kimchi, perilla leaf kimchi ) There is a very very deep cultural history that is connected with their foods that have not changed too much all these years you should definitely check it out. Check out the joseon dynasty and food eaten then, its beautifully presented.

    When I saw the thumbnail, and the banchan, my first thought was, 'Hey is this Soban?' And yep, it is. I don't know any other restaurants in LA with that spread of banchan combined with the marinated raw crab dish.
    I've been going there for at least the past 6-7 years. At first to try their marinated crab, since I wanted to try something different than most offerings in Koreatown and it was highly recommended by Jonathan Gould (the food critic referenced in the video). And fell in love. The banchan comes with every meal, and it's a huge spread as seen in the video. The marinated crab might not be for everyone, but it's a nice experience to try at least once. I love it, and had been going there many times just for it. But their beef short ribs are what they're really known for. Easily one of the best in town. After trying the short ribs, I have a hard time ordering anything else, unless I'm splitting a marinated raw crab with friends.
    Another note about Soban, it's Bong Joon-Ho's (The Oscar winning director of Parasite) favorite restaurant in K-town. During award season when he was campaigning for Oscars, it was said he would come to this restaurant frequently afterwards.
    In fact, when Parasite won Best Picture, after he went through the obligatory Oscar parties, he took the cast and crew that were with him over to Soban to celebrate until 5am in the morning. Source: la.eater.com/2020/2/10/21132436/parasite-oscars-after-party-soban-restaurant-los-angeles-koreatown
    The last time I went to Soban, they still have a framed picture of the cast and crew of Parasite in the restaurant. Not sure if it's still there.

    Mark is in Korean Food Heaven! My first taste of Korean Food was at a Korean Restaurant in Los Angeles in 1984. The South Korea 🇰🇷 Ambassador to Ghana 🇬🇭 hosted Ghana's Olympics Team at the Restaurant. I was invited by Ghana's then Sports Minister to join them. We had a wonderful time. South Korea hosted the 1988 Olympics Games in Seoul. That night at the Korean restaurant, the South Korea Ambassador and his team gave us the Olympic Pin for the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games and other memorabilia. I have never forgotten that experience! 😃

    Among the food culture of Korea, special things that distinguish it from the food culture of other countries. //
    1. Perfect vegan food represented by Korean Buddhist temple food
    2. An endless variety of soup dishes
    3. Kimchi: Vegetables fermented with animal protein represented by cabbage kimchi. In the past, only Koreans made and ate it. There are over 800 types of kimchi.
    4. Jeotgal: A fermented animal-based sauce made from seafood. In Korea, there are more than 140 different types of salted fish.
    5. Ssam: It means wrapping all the ingredients you want to eat in various leafy vegetables represented by lettuce. However, unlike burritos, you have to swallow them in one bite, so you need to adjust the amount of ingredients to be wrapped appropriately.
    6. Herbal Medicine Ingredients : Herbal medicine ingredients are not only eaten for special diseases or health, but are also often used for general home cooking. For example, as ingredients for Samgye-tang, Mulberry, Tree Aralia, Eleutherococcus Sessiliflorus, Mongolian Milkvetch, Korean Angelica Ginger, Jujube and Korean Ginseng are used.
    7. Namul : South Korea is the country that eats the most dishes made with only vegetables without meat and seafood protein. Namul are foods made with one edible plant as the main ingredient. Examples of the types of Namul include Shepherd's Purse, Stringy Stonecrop, Korean Angelica-tree, Korean Wild Chive, Butterbur, Bracken, Doellingeria Scabra, Bamboo Shoot, Chamnamul and Cirsium Setidens.
    // Etc... Korea shows a distinctly different food culture from neighboring countries in Far East Asia (China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan).

    I LOVE Korean food, but what I loved seeing most in all those kitchens were those banged up old black, crusty pans with matching dented up lids! I have a few pans like that I inherited from my mother, and they are older than I am, and have cooked so many countless delicious meals. I would not trust a kitchen or the cooks if the pans were all shiny and new looking. I like the utensils that look like they have been thru a war or two.
