- A few days in the life of a plumber
In todays video I show you the whole process of converting an old gravity system on a back boiler unit into a new Worcester combi boiler. I alter and run in new pipework, remove the old cylinder, fit thermostatic radiator valves, flush the system and fully commission and set up the new boiler.
As always, thanks so much for watching, all the support is so greatly appreciated

Hi guys, thanks for all the support on the videos recently, it is so greatly appreciated, I thought I would upload this one tonight as I'm working away next week. Let me know if you have ever found anything strange in an airing cupboard, I would love to hear your stories
Quite a few dildos 😂
Use them for bunging the header tanks, thanks for watching mate
Great video as usual, was worried there would be a hidden dumball valve on the bbu that could cause you a problem, have had that a few times. Top job
Thanks for the support as always mate, it is something to look out for, I was lucky in the sense the pipework was all nice and accessible, I have seen check valves fitted in weird places before
You need to invest in a good marketing strategy and business name
Makes the world of a difference
I have the perfect name for you
The more I watch your videos the more Im reminded of the expression 'you're an old soul'.
Thanks for the support as always Mark
That brings back memories mate
Baxi
Hey Tom, great video. A quick tip for you and anyone who doesn't know it yet - use your wet & dry vac to get the syphon going on the hot water cylinder. I find it loads easier than sucking on the hose pipe and you don't get a mouthfull of all the crap that's built up in the bottom of the cylinder.
I really should start doing that more, I think if I had a battery wet vac I would because currently I have to run an extension lead which is a pain, thanks for watching mate, the support is greatly appreciated 👍
No wonder I’ve got bad knees with those kneel on wood saw in the early 70s
I would not enjoy doing a job like that ,without my mate .
I am 55 .😂
To do all this on your own is very hard work, its alot harder to do then it looks. Very good work..get a multi tool they are a god send
Thanks for the support mate, I was about worn out at the end of this one
I'm not surprised if I'm honest, u did a better job of this than I could of on my own
Once again a fantastic video, I really love these ones. I love the find of dirty mags at the end, now we know what the plumbers got upto back in the day, I fell off my chair with that one 😂😂😂😂😂.
Ha, glad you enjoyed the video mate, thanks so much for watching
Injector tees were old hat when I was an apprentice and I'm now retired!
The thinking was that they saved a tapping on the boiler and at the same time gave the gravity circulation circuit a bit of a boost when the CH pump was on.
Strange thinking nowadays and yet it made sense at the time .
Keep them coming Tom..
It's surprising how systems have moved on, still I bet the new boiler won't last as long as that old back boiler, things were built to last, thanks for watching
I don't know whether they were 'old hat' or just that combined gravity and pumped systems went out of favour. If you didn't have a 4 pipe back boiler and then don't have an injector tee on a pumped return that meets a gravity return, the/some pumped return will flow up the gravity return. An injector tee will 'suck' the gravity return down as it returns rather than split the flow that.a standard tee would - I think at least - i have never come across them ever! And yes Tom you're right - stuff wsa build to last without built-in obsolescence as today
My favourite plumber on RUclips these days
Thanks for the support mate, I'm so pleased you enjoy my videos
That pump and pipe work on show in the living room was just crazy. Great vid mate love tow watch you work as I sip my Sunday night beer.
Thanks for the support mate, normally you find them boxed in on the side, I can't recall seeing another like this on show
Usually in a cupboard
Alright Tom, I always put a drain off on the flow under the boiler, isolate the flow valve then flush with the filling loop on the return, it means I can pipe and fit the boiler and it helps to wash the cleaner out after the hot flush 👍
Good idea that, thanks for watching mate
Well done Tom another good video showing the hard dirty physical side of plumbing you have too do. Thanks your videos are always a good watch
Thanks for watching John, I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video
Hi Tom, a fantastic film thank you, I really enjoyed this one. It reminded me of when I worked with my dad as an 8 or 10 year old on the old Baxi Bermuda back boilers. We seemed to have hundreds of them in our area back then, about 1972 ish. That was a real blast from the past. My dad is a long time dead now.
You got the job sorted as always, I’m sure the customer was very happy. Thank you for the film, hope the week goes ok while you’re working away. Take care Tom, 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the support as always Chris, I've been up to my eyes in mud today, back boilers are becoming few and far between now, I know a few years ago they did release a condensing one but it wasn't very good, combi's are perfect for jobs like these
@@PlumbLikeTomyep I much prefer a combi boiler these days. 👍👍👍
Thanks Tom, great content.
Thanks for the support as always James, it is greatly appreciated
Top job,Tom! Very informative 👍🏻
Thanks for watching Kevin, glad you enjoyed

Thanks for the support as always Andy, it is greatly appreciated, have a fantastic week
Brilliant, quality work and well done, you make it look easy !!!
Thanks for watching mate, it is really appreciated
Watched all of your videos for a while now just want to say your knowledge is amazing and your a cracking plumber keep it up mate
Thanks for the support Zach, it is greatly appreciated
Hi Tom, about 30mm of 22mm pipe wedges the lever open a treat. Great video as always.
Good tip that Paul, thanks for watching mate
Amazing work Tom, your knowledge is mind blowing!
Thanks for the support Andrew
Another good video Tom
Thanks for the support as always Brain
Marvelous job bro 👏
Thanks for watching mate
Great job Tom 👊
Thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated 👍
@@PlumbLikeTom There was alot of Gas back boilers with front fires fitted in Dublin in the 80s and 90s ,thankfully they are all being removed these days
Top notch again mate 🤔👏😎
Thanks for the support as always Neil
fantastic Tom
Thanks for the support as always Craig
Another good one Tom, I've watched loads of plumbers on youtube, but i swear the way you work is identical to the way i was taught back in the 80's. Keep them coming as I always enjoy watching your video's.
Thanks for the support as always mate, I'm so pleased you enjoy my videos, I was taught by an old school guy, I remember my boss saying on my first day, watch what this guy does and copy him, it has worked for me so far
This was fascinating lad!! Kudos!! I did 😭 when ya put that pipe right above that filter, servicing that! 🤣🤟
Thanks for watching mate, the pipe was further back so you could still easily remove the lid, one of my pet hates is when people make them un-serviceable
Hi Tom, great video as always.
On the Worcester paper templates if you fold the bottom clearance indicator up you can mark all the pipes down the wall for your clips
That way you can do all your drilling together before you hang the jig.
Found a nice bacho spanner in a boiler recently. Always interesting finding old news papers to see the dates the last person was under the floor!! 👍
Good tip that Shaun, I tend to use my laser level through the centre of the gas but I couldn't be bothered to fetch it from the van as it was a good walk away. I only ever seem to lose tools and never find them, a bacho spanner is great find, thanks for watching mate
Excellent job very good you fairly crack on mate
Thanks for the support as always Tom, have a great week
Top engineer!
Thanks for the support mate
Kopex copper flexi!!! Haven’t seen them since the 70’s!!
Nice one Tom. There’s a lot of work on these conversations.
Cheers mate👍👍
Thanks for the support as always mate, you don't see too many any more, I have seen a couple split over the years though, hopefully if anyone goes to change the tap now it should be a bit easier for them
Blimey Tom th a was a job and a half. .a lot of work involved in that one .pity you could not get a hand with it earlier.
All looks ok 👍👍👍👍👍.
Did you do any vidio on the flushing out of the system .
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the support John, I do have the footage from the flush which I may show in the future, I try to vary the videos to keep things as interesting as possible so it may be that I don't show it for a while
Really enjoyed that tom you are a superb plumber keep up the good work with your videos 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video Jay, thanks for watching
Loved that Tom, you really grafted
Thanks for the support as always mate
New subscriber 👍
Thanks for the support. I really apprecaite it
Brilliant video Tom,
There the jobs where you can really get stuck in and enjoy at the same time
👍👍🤜🤠
Thanks for the support as always Tony, I do enjoy these jobs, they can be hard work though
Nice content Tom, lovely installation and conversation. Can’t do any better than that.
Thanks for the support as Charles, glad you enjoyed
Good content buddy, I enjoyed it
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the support mate
You earned your dough on that job , Tom .
Great work as per usual
Thanks for the support mate, these jobs certainly seem to take alot out of you, have a great week
Brilliant workmanship ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️
Thanks fort the support Paul
Thanks for watching, I will certainly do my best to explain the different pipes and sizes in future videos
What a great vid mate. Love watching how you have a quick solution for any problems, interesting to know about the gas pipe taking shortest route in the regs. Keep up the good work mate, top stuff.
Thanks for the support mate, glad you enjoyed the video
Hi Tom , great video , this is more like the work that I do , very interesting to see how you tackle it , really enjoyed this .
Thanks for the support as always Chris, glad you found the video interesting, have a great week
There’s some work in those conversions Tom, you made light of it as usual, but tidy as always, the stuff you find under floors eh , it’s never a big tin of cash is it🤪👍
I haven't found my fortune under a floor yet, normally just the last person's rubbish, thanks for watching as always Peter
Mate just get the wet vac on the end of the hose to siphon the cylinder!
Great work again
I like to live life on the edge, thanks for the support as always mate
Nice job 👏 lot of work must be knackered after.
Thanks for the support mate, it is greatly appreciated 👍
Get one of those mini pumps you can put on top of your screw gun, ideal for connecting onto the tap to pull out air
I will look into getting one, I have seen people use old shower pumps to suck the water, thanks for watching
Another excellent video Tom, interesting and informative, showing top class work.
Really neat pipework esp. after those tricky problems.
I agree that full copper is the thing to fit for mouse proofing!
How funny, finding the smutty mags 😂
It’s no joke working with a bad headache - hopefully yours has gone now! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the support as always Steve, I don't think you will ever beat copper systems, I do suffer from headaches, stress and lack of sleep don't help
nice job tom as all ways
Thanks for the support as always Bill, have a great week
I put those in in the 70s all so the Ascot water heaters and that warm air crap
nice tidy job tom .... regards the brush as you kept it you may find cutting the extra wood off the end will make whats left far more usable ......
I should do that, thanks for the support as always Lee
Great video tom we used to do a lot of camp refurbs, found some very similar and sometimes very disturbing mags too😂😂
It's amazing what you come across in this job, thanks for watching mate, it is greatly appreciated
Great content as usual Tom, nice install too. Perhaps retire that heat mat with the brush mate👍🏻😂
I'm going to take that brush to the repair shop programme on the BBC, see if they can re-bristle it for me, thanks for the support as always mate
Leave the ale alone ❤
Just love that Ton DIRTY MAGAZINES ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
It's amazing what you come across in this job, Thanks for the support as always Keith
Great video m8t good content noticed timber around gas fire and I bet that had no 3rd seal either ….looked like it had never been serviced …👍👍👍
I did spot that as well, when I first looked at the job the customer wanted to keep the gas fire but I talked them out of it, I wasn't happy with a few bits on it, electric is safer and if you only want the look rather the heat it will be just fine, thanks for the support as always mate
Very nice work Tom if was done like that at mine I would be very happy l bet jack asked you for the magazine 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
Thanks for the support as always mate, I've got him to submit them with his gas portfolio, I reckon he will get extra credit
@@PlumbLikeTom nice one 😂😂😂😂
Another great vid mate 👍 did you find the a non return valve at the back boiler? It’s caught me out before 🥴
There wasn't one on this job, I was lucky in the fact you could see most of the pipework but like you I have been caught out in the past, thanks for watching Chris
Great to see how you piped that job and worked with the situation you are given. You’re brave starting the syphoning by mouth on that tank. Does Jacob have to submit the razz mag as portfolio evidence to college?
Thanks for the support mate, I think he will get extra credit for submitting it, I like to live life on the edge and syphon cylinders, always have tape on one end of your hose though as that's the end that goes in the toiket when draining down
*IN THIS EPISODE:* Thunderbirds ✅ Earth Bond ✅ Orange Thing ✅ Dirty Magz ✅
A bit of everything, one thing we never want though is leaks, thanks for the support as always mate
Hi mate what do you mean by the shock arrester protects the hydronic block? Great content 👍🏻
The hydraulic block is the plastic components on the water side inside the boiler. When a tap is shut quickly it can send a shock wave back to the boiler and cause the heavy wear on the plastic parts, causing them to eventually fail. All the shock arrestor does is takes away that strain, as the water has somewhere else to go. Thanks for watching mate
Great video mate and great install. Was there a balanced cold off CWS for bathroom or was it off mains. Just incase anyone was watching to link them at hotpress if that makes sense
There wasn't on this one, everything was off the mains, it's not uncommon though to find at least one tank fed supply which would have to be linked back through to the mains, thanks for watching mate
your videos are very insightful and encouraging, especially, for the younger generations. Thank you mate for the hard work.
1. is a combi better for oil boiler than our immersion tank etc we have currently?
2. can I replace the plastic tube oil tank level indicator while the tank is full? it is an old steel outdoor tank with an external push button visual tube indicator with the sight tube aged and discoloured. should be obliged for a reply.
Thanks for watching mate, you should be fine to change your site gauge as long as the main shut off valve is first from the tank, all you will need to do is isolate that valve, and just swap over the site gauge
Oil combis are decent but are very expensive to buy, it often works out cheaper to go for a standard boiler and upgrade to a high efficiency cylinder, hope that helps
Yeah very helpful. Cheers mate. Wish you all the best.
Nice job I used to fit back boilers only issue adjustable spanner on chrome nuts and do you need to deburr pipes any more all American plumbers seem to ..bob
Thanks for watching, I use knipex smooth jaws on my rad valve nuts, it doesn't mark the chrome usually
Hi Tom
Great video any way you get to your destination has got to be good ,how long do you allow for this type of job ,I use to allow 4 days but I did my own electrical work being electrically qualified
Regards
Lawrence Peters
Thanks for the support Lawrence, this took me 3 long days, the second day I had 12 hours on the tools as I stopped late to do the flush. The electrician was the morning on the third day I was there but this also included a point for the new electric fire. 4 days would be about right for a job like this
👍👍
Thanks for the support as always Danny
HI Tom Thanks, If this Was My Spec i Would put a Unvented Economy Cy For PV and So/ HW/ Heating System?
Unvented are great for large properties, this was only a two bed terrace with one bathroom, solar PV is the way forward though, thanks for watching
Awesome Video Tom... where can I find the 18+ version?👀🤣
Thanks for watching mate, I got Jacob to submit the mags with his gas portfolio for extra credit, when he's done with them I will send them to you
@@PlumbLikeTom 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi Tom, can I ask is it the Milwaukee c12 cutter you have, I see there is also an m12 that cuts steel pipe and that but I would mostly only be cutting copper so assuming that c12 be ok. Also are they worth it? Do you use yours a lot?
I've got the inox version that's designed to cut stainless, it cuts way faster than the original and I'm still on the same blade having had it for nearly two years, it's been abused and it still cuts like new. I have even cut thick wall steel pipe with it and it still won't break. The inox version is also water resistant, I used to find the older one didn't like getting wet, it would dry out but would stop working for a day or so until it had. It is worth the extra money but the other version is still very good, it takes a bit of getting used to and won't fit everywhere a pipe slice can, but some jobs it does save a lot of time, thanks for watching mate
Thanks very much mate
Great idea with the flushing on the jig.
Thanks for the support Rob, have a great week
😊😊😊😊
Thanks for the support as always Ross
Hi, did you keep the magazines? Can you post them to me if you are done with them? Let me know, thanks.
I've got Jacob to submit them with his gas portfolio, I reckon he might get extra credit, thanks for watching
At last... one where you'll get paid.
In scrap... 😂
Them greenstar 4000.... much cop (?) or just another basic combi [ me nan's getting one fitted next month courtesy of the local council. Just paid to upgrade it from the 2000 model... was it worth it?].
Anyhow's great video, matey love your real-life trials and tribulations jobs... 🍿🍺. 😂
I really like the 4000, I would certainly have one in my house if I had gas and not oil, there will be a few quid in scrap on this one, I have to make sure the tax man gets his bonus, thanks for watching mate
@PlumbLikeTom Cheers for that matey. It's always good to hear you've made a half decent choice, especially when playing the dutiful grandson 😅.
And you can't forget the old twat-man eh. Got to help pay for all them politicians' expense accounts and second homes ... 🤣
What does the arrestor do , just curious
It takes the shock out of the water when a tap is shut which in turns helps relieve the strain on the boiler components, if you imagine if a tap is suddenly shut it will send a load of pressure back through the pipe and into the boiler, the arrestor just reduces this shockwave, thanks for watching Mark
A1, as always Tom
Thanks for the support as always mate
Can you do one of them in a day ?
No, there's to much work for 1 day on my own, especially if the house is lived in and you need to put floors and carpets back, I had most of this done in 2 and just had a few bits to finish on day 3
Do you do jos like this on your own ?
Mostly I tend to, it really depends how much work I have on but I like all the lads to be on their own, sometimes we double up but the jobs don't always get done twice as quick with two people, it's more like 1.5x faster
Pre insulted mlcp pipe would of worked a treat on that job and saved you time
You are right mate, I tend not to use it all that often though, thanks for watching Rob
Do we get a uncensored version tom? 😂
There wasn't much to see really and it is a plumbing channel, one of them was in the bath so you could argue that is knid of plumbing related, thanks for watching as always mate
"But it's in the van init" UK plumbing 101
Get yourself some of those talon joist clips, much easier :)
Normally buried in my van as well, thanks for watching as always mate
10:41 'as long as you know you're doing it wrong, does it make it alright?' real life, i suppose ...
Thanks for watching mate, I think sometimes there should be a common sense approach to stuff, the reg is there to stop gas pipes being run at weird angles through walls to prevent them being hit, this one wasn't extreme and sometimes the drill naturally wonders off track a bit especially when drilling multiple holes
Loads of tat Tom
There will be a couple of quid on this one, thanks for the support as always Glyn
Hi Does the 4000 have the horrible kebab heat exchanger
It does, the 8000 has the classic heat exchanger and the new 1000 has a one similar to the baxi's, thanks for watching mate
@@PlumbLikeTom So the 4000 is an upgraded 30i .
Servicing is terrible .
Time to get rid of of the kebab heat exchangers and the compact is awfull .
They have improved access a lot to key components, the prv is at the front and the expansion vessel is at the side, both very easy to service and or replace, the plate is also easily removable once you remove the condense trap. I do agree with you about the compact range, I try to stick away from them as they are a real pain to work on
The things you find in airing cupboards , magazines, dildos and a 12 inch bahco adjustable spanner that was under the cylinder it was sticking out of the back and the cylinder had moulded around it without splitting , probably been there 25 years. The plumber who lost it would be wondering what had happened to it.
A bacho spanner is a great find, I only ever seem to lose tools, thanks for watching as always Dennis, the support is greatly appreciated
hot water priority system more efficent
I have done priority hot water systems in the past on large properties with big demands, this was just a combi feeding a kitchen sink and bathroom, thanks for watching
Do you work alone ?
I have a couple of lads that work with me on some jobs but this one I had to do mostly alone as everyone was busy, Jacob helped to commission the system as evidence for his gas portfolio
😂the more I see those Milwaukee pipe cutters the more I’m glad I didn’t purchase any
I really like mine to be honest, It's not perfect but at least I can't lose it under a floor, thanks for watching as always mate
Carpet in the bathroom an kitchen lol whaaaat
It was all the fashion apparently, thanks for watching 👍
Why all the censored parts of the video ?
Why that model? Servicing that boiler is a nightmare .
🤘😎🤘🫖☕️🍰
Thanks for the support as always Wayne 👍
I think your heat Matt has seen Better days do we need to set up a go fund me for one 😂. Proper graft mate 🫡
Thanks for the support mate, I might have to treat myself to a new one
And a new brush 🤣
This is getting expensive now, maybe I can use my old mat as a kind of sweeping device
