  • Day in the life of a plumber
    Every day is a school day in this job and this one left me scratching my head for a minute, we got it sorted though as we always do

    They had sell half of the house to pay the lecky bill for that bastard. Man,electricity must have been free in the eighties to feed that. I would like to have the controls and wiring arrangement of it. Separate elements for day and off peak. Must have been three phase to support that load. Still, great video mate.     We all need some help now and again .there is always something new we come across...Looks like bit of an involved job to get all the pipes found and identified. ..
    That tank was huge.
    Love it when you lost the cat under the floor 😂😂😂😂

    Awesome work mate. As a central heating installer of 24 years, even I struggled to work out exactly what was going on to begin with. That thermal store could have ran about 5 houses.

    Hi Tom, that water tank was massive, I’ve never seen one that big in a domestic property before. Be interesting to see how you remove it, surely it will need cutting up. Hope it all went well for you and the customer is happy.

    Had a new 22mm Nerrad slice do the same as yours , had to spin it really slow to get it to cut. Left in the bag a for about a week and used another.
    All of a sudden it works fine now though. I’ve had this with new rothenberger slices as well before.

      Thanks for watching Gavin, I took mine back and they gave me a new one, they do come with a 2 year warranty and they said I can return it is many times as I like in that time

    I just had a customer buy. A hotel (posh) for Southport..2 boilers. Heat only and a combo for downstairs, nightmare figuring it out, got it sorted eventually, experience pays well, you have a lot, good video as always!

    What powers those immersions has it got a power station next door. I wouldn’t have a clue where to start with that one Tom 😂

      I think if you switched all the immersions on at the same time it probably would have melted something, it certainly would have burnt a deep hole in your wallet that's for sure, thanks for watching mate

      @@alimack5489 I guess it was designed for a much lager building, the immersion heaters would have been a backup in case the heat source ever failed. It would have meant the building would have still been heated via the immersions, it would have been tremendously expensive though but in the right setting such as a care home where heating is essential, it may have served a purpose

    That water tank was mad, I can’t understand why they shoved in so many immersions, when they couldn’t all be on at once unless they had a three phase supply.
    Enjoyed the funny bit at the end!

      Thanks for the support as always Steve, there was a huge power box on the wall, I think some were on the economy 7 setting for night tariff, it still would have been super expensive though

      @@PlumbLikeTom I had a flat like that once, weren't as many immersions but there were multiple, immersions some were on E7 as you said and some on the day time for (boost) flat was horrible, storage heaters on E7 so you had to predict the weather.
      Hated it.

    Another great video Tom, I've believe I've also seen one of those cylinders before, but the same as you it was not that size. That was shame about your pipe cutters, I kind of thought the nerrad ones would have lasted longer than they did.

    Tom, that was a really interesting video. That thermal store my word, absolutely amazing - I reckon they must have had the meter bypassed if they ever used all those immersion heaters. I was a bit disappointed we did not get to see the tank being cut up to get it out.

    When I was doing bathrooms I had floor boards up , after lunch put them back down. Later in the afternoon the customer said she could hear the cat miaowing but couldn't find it . 😂😂

    I remember the first time i seen one of them had to get my old mate to give me some advice. every day is a learning day . Some of the monstrosity the old guys used to fit is scary stuff Hahahahahahahaahahahaha

    Great work as always, just a quick question… how come you still used copper when there was plastic there already? Wouldn’t the flow of the system already be restricted by the inserts in those plastic fittings? (I generally always use copper but I’m starting to wonder if it’s just more difficult for not much benefit!)

      Thanks for the support James, I just prefer copper I think, I do use plastic on some jobs and it does speed things up a bit, I know if I put copper in properly it should at last me

    How feasible would wiring in solar panels direct into a hot water immersion be? Solar feed in rates are almost nothing where I live and battery storage is not cheap in the least. Especially since the mains usage is almost nothing since our house is empty during the day anyway.

      Hi mate, I'm not an expert on solar PV but my dad has just had something very similar done, the feed tariffs back to the grid are so low you are better off to use the power you create rather than give it back for free, he has a hot tub which he powers, the theory would be the same for a hot water cylinder though, thanks for watching mate

    Is that essentially a thermal store of sorts?

      Kind of but this doesn't have a coil in it, all this does is get heated by the wood burner and there is a pump to drag the heat away that feeds the radiators, my mate couldn't understand why the radiators weren't draining, it's because there was nearly 2000l of stored water, this was massively oversized for the property, thanks for watching mate

      @@PlumbLikeTom Yes, mild steel Tom and insulation behind outer case. I had one 20+ years ago that was the same size as a 600G steel oil tank and had loads of Immersions all over it, built in tight to a cupboard on the ground floor.
      Never seen one since until now. Had to cut mine up in situ to get it out....................
      Electric cost a fortune to run, they had gas put on to the house and I put a Potty Suprima out in the garage ( 1 st gen one with the PCB problems.. ) 😞

      Well over 2t with the water, I'm surprised it didn't end up downstairs, they want it taking out but the only way that is happening is in pieces, thanks for the support as always Danny

    Those nerrad cutters are garbage I had the same problem with the 22mm so did my dad,the wheels break seriously quick as well,I’ve thrown them out and gone back to my monument cutters

      They do cut really quick compared to other cutters,I guess the wheels are thinner so they cut better but I changed my wheel last week in my 15mm I’ve fitted 3 boilers since then and there completely knackered.
      The only good thing about I think is there not as wide so you can cut in slightly more awkward places where the monument won’t fit.
      But £7 a week in cutting wheels takes the piss a bit so I’m back on monument
