- Day in the life of a plumber
In todays video I install a new electric boiler along with an unvented cylinder.
As always, thanks so much for watching, all the support is so greatly appreciated
#plumber
Tom the old unit you took out was a Nibe one when I worked for another housing association they were in one bedroom flats, from what I remember it wasn't an unvented it was a heat store with a mains pressure coil inside. They had to be left on 24/7 because they took ages to heat up the radiators. The problem with the new boiler dead shorting will give you potential of up to 5000 amps , hence the flash and bang . Fortunately it was contained and you didn't get showered in molten metal . Stick to water it's much safer .
Good advice that, at least with water you only get wet, I looked up the instructions on the old unit and it took 8 hours to heat the water up from 15 degrees, it can't have been that efficient to run although the new unit probably won't be much cheaper with the cost of electricity
Tidy Job Tom. We always used to say “At least with Gas you can smell it coming B4 it goes bang. “💥 😱😱
True that Colin, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
Interesting video Tom 👍😎 good job no-one was hurt when the boiler went pop😮
Thanks for the support as always Pb, it was a scary moment
Hi Tom, bad news about the boiler going bang, I’m glad you were not injured apart from the ringing ears.
I’ve not had much experience of those electric boilers, a nice tidy install by young Jacob and yourself.
Plenty copper pipe and solder that’s always great to see, the boiler manufacturer should pay for your time to install the replacement boiler surely.
Another great film Tom, have a good week and stay safe mate. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the support as always Chris, I doubt they will pay my time, like you say they should but most always wiggle out of paying, it's not fair really
very glad your ok, so you made me buy a printer & not ever buy a storm boiler 😂
To be fair the printer seemed decent, at least it didn't blow up on me, thanks for watching 👍
I'm lucky it didn't blow up on me with my record
Nice install. Shame about the bang. Shows a lack of quality control on the electric boiler manufacturer side
True, new products shouldn't go bang like that, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
You would think they would test it in the factory that’s bad great job Tom 👍
I would have thought so, you can't send dangerous products to customers, thanks for watching as always Kevin 👍
Very right in what you said there Tom ,nice polished pipe work 👍👍👍👍👍☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️🛠🤕
Thanks for the support as always mate, it is greatly appreciated
It's very frustrating when things go wrong for your customers which is outside of your control, I hope your customer is understanding, you and Jacob did a bang up job on the piping, proper in copper! He's a great solderer and seems like a genuinely nice guy too. Glad you're all safe and I would have the sparky coming to the next power up too! maybe he can check to make sure there are no shorts before energizing? Hope your gas safe went ok! Keep up the great work Tom.
Thanks for the support Matthew, we did check the unit before powering up, to be honest neither of us wanted to turn it on though. Jacob is a great lad, I really enjoy working with him
The gate valve e should be a lock shield type . .It stops people messing with it .
Fair point, I normally take the handle off, thanks for watching
Another neat efficient job Tom thanks for the upload
Thanks for the support as always Keith, glad you enjoyed
Had the same problem with my pipes slice from narrad gone back to rothenberger, and Rothenberger cutter works with unifix clips. A few manufacturers are bringing them out now. valiant have one.
I was really disappointed with mine, I now have two that are temperamental as I took it back to where I got it from and the rep said there was nothing wrong with it, it does work sometimes though, thanks for watching
The only luck you’ve got at the minute is bad luck Tom. Look after yourself mate.
It seems like it Charles, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
Nice bit of scrap Tom
It was mostly steel unfortunately, thanks for watching as always Glyn
nice neat install , shame about the BANG!
It was going alright until then, thanks for watching as always Chris 👍
That's a bit different job there Tom ..you And Jacob have done a very neat job there .👍👍👍👍.that old unit took some getting out..
Not even going to mention the electric boiler 😯.
Is it very scary when something goes bang in your face .
Not surprised you was shook up with that bang.
Get your electrian to carry out an insulation resistance test on the elements on the replacement boiler before you switch it on .
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the support as always John, he wil certainly check the readings this time, you don't expect a new product to go bang
No you would not ..
But seems to be the way with new equipment now ...not what you need at all 😌😞
suppose to use flexi hoses on them boilers would look like piss if you ask me. fitted 5 in a set of apartments never used flexis didnt even know until i was onto their technical on the phone
I spoke to them about the flexi hoses and they said it's fine to use female irons as long as the connections inside don't twist, thanks for watching 👍
@PlumbLikeTom turco ones seem a better electric boiler
Expansion vessel was meant be on hot weather learnt that the hard way when nine came to commission 5 of them what a pain to fit
That's interesting to know, I thought it had been retro fitted in, thanks for watching mate 👍
Another neat efficient job Tom well done mate👍🏼
Thanks for the support as always mate 👍
A few points, even the worst heat pump is a lot more efficient than direct electric heating, these nibe units also provide forced ventilation the customer may have issues with air quality and damp after removal. I hope there is some sort of economy 7 /off peak strategy behind running this, otherwise its going to be brutally expensive.
Another near job man, well done. As a spark I am not going to talk about it going bang as I have had a lifetime of those panty filler moments from one thing or another. However I can’t believe the price of an electric boiler, it’s only a glorified shower in a box with a pump and vessel. Sad thing is they are less reliable than a shower!! Still, it was a good watch. Alll the best.
Thanks for the support mate, like you say not much to these units, it certainly went with a bang though
Loving all the content Tom. How come you didn’t replace it with a new heat pump instead
It was client specified, a heat pump would have been good although siting it outdoors would have been a slight issue, there was only a 600 wide passage so it would have needed to go high up, thanks for watching
Great video Tom, but what a dreadful experience with that boiler! You were very lucky not to have been seriously hurt with that amount of energy; it would seem that the manufacturer did no QC or testing, which is terrible, that being the case.
On a lighter note, I’m with Jacob (whose work looks excellent) on the use of abrasive rather than steel wool, as I don’t like the bits of steel it often leaves all over the place.
The unit you pulled out looked pretty interesting and unusual - you certainly get a wide variety of jobs!
That printer looks handy for lots of things!
Thanks for the support as always Steve, it certainly went with a bang, frightened the life out of me, like you say it should have been tested as it could have hurt someone
Had the nerrad cutter before utter shite 😂, I use the pitbull pipe slices from Mac Donald plumbing supplies, they are really good and reasonably priced compared to the nerrads
Thanks for the support mate, they do look good to be fair, I might have to treat myself
@PlumbLikeTom you want regret the pitbull slices, I use mine everyday and have been impressed so far
Wow, sorry to hear the boiler went with an almighty bang in your face. I hope you're ok. I do like the printer though, I'm going to find that one, thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the support as always mate, I was ok luckily, just shook up
Nice tidy work Tom, is Joseph your apprentice or is he fully qualified?
Glad your ok after the boiler went bang, can’t you claim for your time and inconvenience from the manufacturer?
Thanks for the support Gary, he's nearly qualified with his gas now, manufactures don't tend to pay, they always wiggle out, I guarantee they will tell me this is installer error, I fitted the new unit today and it was fine
Great video Tom, you boys put a fair shift in on this one, I like the look of the Joker wrench but thought they looked a bit bulky.
Love the printer you used, just had to order one lol.
Thanks for the support as always Andy, that was my only concern with the joker spanner, it did feel super smooth though, when they come down a bit in price I will treat myself
Haven’t tried errands normal pipe slices but their ratchet slices are good, had them couple of years now
I may be just got un lucky with mine, thanks for watching Chris
@@PlumbLikeTom the ratchet slices are more like a normal slice inside
The future is electric 😂😂😂😅😅😅
So they say, thanks for watching as always Paul
Top notch guys 🤔😎
Thanks for the support as always Neil 👍
Top job mate, I’ve taken a few of those out
Thanks for the support as always Darren, it was the first time I have seen one, I think the company who made this one went bust a few years back, the thing would have been a nightmare to work on
I don't understand your bad luck with the nerrad slices, I've had my 15mm one for about a year now and it's still cutting in about 3 spins
Top video as always Tom
I'm just unlucky I think, I have two bad ones now as they sent it back to me as they couldn't find anything wrong, it works sometimes but then will just spin for days
@@PlumbLikeTom have you been cutting painted pipes? Paint specs get their mechanism is a hissy
@@killerbean9911 I don't recall doing, I mainly use the milwaukee and it's only when I can't get that in I use a slice, the second cutter I got was brand new and just span, they did say I might be turning it the wrong way, I'm know I not good but I do know how to use a pipe slice
@@PlumbLikeTom 😂😂 We've all spun it the wrong way but tried the other way 😂 were idiots but we're not that stupid 🤣🤣
That happed to one I fitted
That's interesting to know, apparently it had never happened before, thanks for watching 👍
Always a pleasure to watch your videos! Do the new copper fittings need to be brushed prior of the soldering? I'm running the hot and cold on my house and I've got a feeling that I missed that.
:(
Cheers
They are usually fine if they are new fittings and look clean, if they're been in the van a while they tarnish a bit so I clean them, thanks for watching 👍
Had one of those Nibe Fighter exhaust air hear pumps in my house when it was new. Housing trust replaced it for a combi. Good system only problem was no one knew how to set the heat curves on it. I tweaked mine and it worked well. Heavy things to move though. Good job as always bud, nice to see some more unusual jobs 😊
Thanks for the support as always mate, it was the first time I've seen one, it certainly was heavy getting it out
Nibe.. dreadful things , never worked properly ever , used to freeze up on the outlets when filters were blocked , LPG is used as the refrigerant, dangerous if you don't know that,
Good to know mate, I have paid a company to decommission the gas out of it so it can then be recycled
love the printer - thanks
Thanks for watching
🤘😎🤘
Thanks for the support as always Wayne 👍
Nice job again Tom , looked better than that old kit, what a pain with the new boiler, is electric the way forward? Pleased you’re ok, fingers crossed 🤞 for the next one being ok. 🚽👍
Thanks for the support as always Peter, I was just shook up, the job was going alright until that point as well
I would of thought ,you would get the pipe work to temperature before insulating the pipes .
Normally I would but we were waiting on the electrician, thanks for watching
Nice Job Tom and I think we may of passed one another on the A17 about 7.30 this morning. Are you still shaking from the BANG .? Shame about that boiler.
It could have been me on the A17, I was heading out that way, thanks for watching as always Darren
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thanks for the support as always Ross 👍
Not a fan of the Darren slicers either. I prefer the rigid ones. All in one 22 and 15mm
I've gone off them, I used to use todays tools ones, cheep and cheerful but decent, thanks for watching mate 👍
You are the Fred Dibnah of the heating engineering world Tom. Not afraid to give it a go and show others how you do things. Great content 👌 👏
Top video as always Tom, it’s mad seeing you get 400+ likes on a video and still have under 10k subs. We’re a loyal bunch it seems 🫡
You really are a loyal bunch, I really do appreciate everyone for watching, thanks for the support as always mate 👍
Wasn't the unit tested at the factory and passed for quality?
Sorry to hear about your experience mate its not very nice when electrics go bang on you. What model boiler is that out of interest as its only 63amp supply for 14.5kw? I'd like to see the manual. Nice work from you guys, electrician did a nice job too.
Edit 60-63 amps works out fine, im guessing its a 10mm cable ran to it hard to tell off camera.
The electrician did all the calculations and I trust it was all Ok, he did the one before which was the same, thanks for the support, it is greatly appreciated
ur not having much luck with electic boilers tom. I dont know how people can work with gloves on, one site i was on i was told i had to wear them but i could cut the fingers off if i wanted, thats H&S logic for u. That old unit looked like a bugger, if the people that designed them had to work on them things would be made a lot better
I'm not having any luck Scot, I should wear gloved for some jobs but like you say they do get in the way, thanks for watching mate
I'm with Jacob on the gloves.flux in the cuts is never nice
Thanks for the support as always mate 👍
I'm wondering why you put a indirect cylinder in rather than a direct when both are using electric, not quite finished the video if you explain later.
Thinking about it maybe the heat recovery on the hot water might be better on the boiler with the coil rather than the immersion. Not sure 🤷. Good video though
In the summer the immersion will be used, the boiler will boost the cylinder when required throughout the rest of the year, thanks for watching 👍
Hi Tom great video as always, just a question about the automatic bypass valve, I’m currently looking into upgrading a two pipe system into a S plan system with two zone valves one for UFH in a bathroom and the other for radiators throughout the house and was told that the automatic bypass valve needed to go before the zone valves is that correct? And in regard to the automatic bypass valve what would that be set to?
Thanks
Yes, the automatic by pass will need to go before the zone valves, when setting the system you will need to make sure the by pass opens when the zone valves shut, it's easiest to use a clamp on pipe temperature gauge to see when the hot water goes through the valve
What do you think of these air sauce heat pumps are they any good Tom
They are good in the right place, It's always down to correct design and installation
@glynstorer3269 I had one in my 2009 new build. Once you get the heat curves set its as efficient as the condensing combi the housing trust replaced it with. I liked it as you had good air flow through the house with continuos extraction. Trouble is like all heat pumps there's not many engineers understand setting the heat curves up. I taught myself and got mine dialled in.
Par for the course these days, everything built to a price with minimal quality control.ho hum
It seems to be the way of the world, thanks for watching as always Tom
Is there any point using electric boiler to heat up the hot water? Would it not be as efficient to just heat the water on the immersion? Curious that's all..
In the summer I think the immersion will be better, I have put it on a timer so it will come on in the day and the boiler will just boost it when needed, thanks for watching as always mate
It saves and is simpler to use instant tankless heaters for hot water. Hitachi do 8kw units for £100 one ine the kitchen and one in the bedroom.
Why are you out of pocket pal no way its your fault
I had to change the boilers over for free, I also had to pay for the electrician to come back as he couldn't do all the tests he needed to do as the unit wasn't working. It probably cost me over £400 with all lost time. The manufacturer didn't want to know and even said they were going to charge me if the old unit was sent damaged. It's honestly a joke when the installer has to pick up all the costs when it's no fault of mine. I have now fitted the new unit and the job is sorted for the customer which is always the priority
Tom stop fitting these electric boilers - it ain’t worth hassle. BTW NIBE did not go bust they have been in business for over 70 years with heat pumps and are very much still in business . Those units had a less than stellar reputation in the U.K. but that was largely down to the installers who did not understand them and did not have the knowledge to pass onto customers who subsequently did not operate it to best effect and ended up with high running costs. NIBE are still big in Europe and are in the top ten of heat pump manufacturers.
untested. why install? we know when somthing looks strange. these new systems... the repair lot have to sort out. stop trying new things. you remember what you learnt. simple is best. fuck the "requirements" off.
Well I was waiting to see it Tom & you fell right into the trap mate. An S or Y Plan is a complete waste of time with a Leccy Boiler. Always fit a E7 Direct Cylinder.
Sorry to piss on your Parade mate.
These Leccy Boilers are ‘Flow Through’ Type Boilers, so depending on Tariff, it’s much more expensive to heat the HW. But with a Twin Immersion, on the Cylinder, you’ve got a Cheap Rate immersion & a Boost immersions. Now I know you maybe on a cheap fixed Tariff on this job & it’s irrelevant, but it’s a point worth noting.
The Silverline 24x32mm Open ended compression nut spanner is half the price of the Monument one & it’s the same spanner.
Young Jacob looks a good lad & he’s being trained by an artisan.
I’m getting one of these Wera Joker spanner’s, they look the Dog’s Danglers!!
Thanks as always Thomas & keep them coming.
Luv Dick Puller❤❤
Thanks for the support as always mate, fair point about heating the cylinder with the immersion, I guess being on a s plan does give a backup in case the element fails, the wera spanner is a good bit of kit
