  • This video describes my first 12 hours post pelvic organ prolapse repair surgery, while hospitalized, and my plans for going home. I discuss my pelvic and abdominal pain, adjusting to my suprapubic catheter, vaginal packing, side effects of IV pain medication, and medical interventions I received while hospitalized.

    Hello, Friend.
I’m your new fan at 61 just now addressing a cystocele, rectocele, and bladder incontinence surgically after everything else failed. My last baby just turned 22.
I’m a physical fitness buff with a solid core (my urogynecologist noticed my improvements first) and discovered the hard way that certain exercises cause way too much leakage.
I had my procedure at 7:30 am yesterday, June 4. I was discharged at noon from the actual hospital, complete with a private room, unlike every other same-day procedure I’ve ever had.
My Foley catheter is the biggest problem. It’s uncomfortable all the time. My butt feels as though I was anally raped. Ironically, the vagina which contains all the sutures is not an issue as long as the pain meds are on board.
Sitting is impossible with the catheter in, but it will be removed Friday, 6/7.
I have no doubt that being physically fit is serving me well through all this.

I’m 4 days post op and find I was WAY too worried about this surgery. Knock on wood. Wether it be due to advancements in procedure or my wonderful teams of Drs- one for total hysterectomy done laparoscopically - and one for a prolapse repair - rectocele, bladder and vagina- done vaginally; I only took one of my narcotic pain pills and mainly because I wanted to see if they were any good, haha. My gf had the same procedure years ago and her experience was totally different. Not bad, just different. Like she had packing that was removed the next day. No packing. Thanks for giving us an idea of what this is all about. 💕

I’m having surgery in two days, two prolapse, possibly will take my uterus. I had two C-Sections. Mine comes from mostly from atrophy & a few other things. I had Estrogen base cancer. So I lack lots of Estrogen in my body which is good for me. Higher chance of success rate . The lack of estrogen also bring atrophy in my lady parts inside. It’s been really helpful to watch your experience, doesn’t scare me. I know what to expect know🙂

I remember years ago when my mom had her surgery and her bladder wouldn't completely empty when she would pee , the doctor sent her home and told her to self-cather until the bladder was emptying completely. She just couldn't do it by herself and my sister stayed there with her for about a week and did it for her.

Thankyou for your video, Im 11days away from Surgery, Hysterectomy, prolapse bladder, Rectocele Im nervous and wish I had a friend who can tell me what too expect specially afterwards. I'm a momma of 5 kids which is the reason for my surgery as I had internal damage too my internal vaginal affecting how going too the bathroom can be a challenge. Not wanting too be constipated since that creates a bulge into the vagina and pushes prolapse further down. I been waiting for 9yrs too commit too this surgery. I wanted my baby too be older and be able too live with the 30lb weight restriction of lifting or picking up for lifetime. I know it's 5lbs after surgery. Restrictions of lifting for prevention of reoccurring prolapse is lifetime I was told today at my pre op apt. Have you been told the same?

It wasn’t bad, or a long needle. Normal size needle. It was to promote blood clotting and prevent hemorrhage. I’m not sure that everyone has to have it, as I’m not sure if it was for the hysterectomy or the vaginal/pelvic repair work. It was the LEAST of my concerns at that point. Haha

Can you explain why you had to keep the suprapubic catheter in place for two weeks, and why both caths were necessary for the first 24 hrs? I am having my official consultation about a hysterectomy with bladder & bowel prolapse in a few weeks, and I am absolutely terrified. 😞

    • @personalprolapsestory
      @personalprolapsestory  Год назад +2

      Hi Heather,
First, I wanted to explain that I only had the SPC because of the placement of my stress incontinence sling. The type I had requires your bladder and urethra to re-train themselves to function properly over time (due to swelling and tension of the urethral sling). Both catheters are required for the first 24 hours because you aren’t getting out of bed yet to drain the SPC or attempt to go on your own. The SPC can’t drain without gravity (while lying down). You may not need an SPC at all! I’ve heard of docs giving you a choice of an SPC or regular catheter once you go home. If given that choice, I’d go with the SPC. Email me if you want to talk or have other questions. Personalprolapsestory@gmail.com

Hi Heather I am having the same surgery too. My dr said I will be sent home with a catheter for only a few days. I assume it depends on what the dr uses to fix your bladder. Good luck! I am very scared too. I have been trying to prepare myself for this surgery for awhile now.

Be prepared!! Make sure house is clean and have clothes ready as if u were going on a weeks vacation. If u have a partner/kids or both, Make sure u have a solid plan laid out for them. Have a leg pillow, a recliner maybe, have very loose clothing, be mentally prepared. It is very painful, hard to get up or move or anything. Get a bell, you won't be able to speak loud or yell, have your pain meds ready, chargers, phone, laptop all within reach. Have family or friends take turns watching you, you will need at least 2ppl helping you at a time. I had menoreaghea and fibroids which were extremely painful and debilitating, so I got my uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes removed. I'm fresh out of surgery 20hrs ago, and I'm miserable. I'm in so much pain 8/10 and I've been crying for hours. They gave me percocet and ibuprofen and they don't take the pain away but maybe 30-40%. I can pee just fine but I do get the urge to push and I have to stop myself. Im gassy and some of it passes some is stuck and it's adding to the pain..be well prepared.

No. You will only need one if you have the type of urinary incontinence sling I have (mid-urethral sling). That being said, this type of sling is best for long term outcomes, despite the undesirable short term recovery. Don't let any doctor just put a sling under your bladder!
