Two of my favorite scenes: The scene where Kyra's daddy watches the VHS tape and realizes that his wife has been poisoning their daughters. The actor (Greg Wood) did that scene very, very well. It's a small scene, but I find that scene so moving and horrifying. Well done. Well done. And, of course, the scene between Cole and his mother in the car. Brilliant acting on both of their parts. I always cry when I watch that scene. Toni Collette is such a fine actress. And this movie represents some of the finest acting by a child ever put on film. Haley Joel Osment. Outstanding. One of Bruce Willis' finest roles, too. Powerful movie. Just excellent.
You're so right. And the funeral scene is a fantastic lesson on how an actors' expression and a little push in dolly move can be used as exposition. Seems obvious, but up to that point most watching the film would still be wondering if their interpretation of what they are seeing is correct. The mother had been poisoning her daughter! All confirmed to the viewer without any words spoken. And Wood's expression of shocked grief... as you point out, is masterfully crafted.
Congratulations on having such a wonderful relationship with your son. I can only wish I had that with my father. Also, this is an amazing movie and I am glad you experienced it.
"Are you a good doctor?" "I used to be " The foreshadowing was subtle, but seeing you go wide-eyed at that moment made it finally click for me. Nice catch, D! Yet another great reaction video from you guys-looking forward to the next one!
This kid seems so very intelligent for his age. Comments you'd hear from an adult not a kid. Seems very well educated and great raising from the parents. GJ Dad! Great reaction!!!
Great reaction to a brilliant film. You're raising an intelligent son there, Dad. FYI: Cole actually told Malcolm that dead people don't see each other, because they only see what they want to see.
I'm so impressed by your son's emotional intelligence. He immediately picked up on all the clues that most people didn't see like myself when first watching this movie.
I'm sure you get this often. And I haven't read through all the comments. But, you are a joy to watch. Even for the sad films. What a mature young man you have. And a breath of fresh air to see a healthy relationship between you. So glad to have stumbled across your channel in my algorithm and subscribed. Thank you both. ❤
It's a crime that Toni Collette hasn't got an Oscar yet. She's one of the best to ever do it. Haley Joel Osment has the kind of talent you only see in actors decades older. I've always liked Bruce Willis as an action star and I respect him for taking on these kinds of smaller roles too, when he could have just taken big paychecks for his whole career. He gives a wonderfully subtle performance here.
@@tashkentyActually I read that Bruce took a smaller paycheque and decided to get a percentage of the profits for this movie as he was so sure of its success!
It is also the first of a sequence of happy and touching events that completely distracts you from the final twist and makes you believe that the final scene is just going to be Malcolm reconciling with his wife. Brilliant storytelling!
Donnie Wahlberg's one scene is better than all of Mark's combined. Toni Collette's portrayal is phenomenal. Haley Joel Osment should have gotten ten times the salary for this film. Fantastic writing. Incredible cinematography.
As many have previously mentioned here, per the demands of M. Night Shyamalan, the color red was only to be used for objects that were affected in some way by death. In the special features of my DVD of this movie, there is an interview with M. Night Shyamalan where he describes how prior to filming a scene he would first walk around the set and if there was anything in the scene that was red that wasn't connected to death, he would immediately remove it from the scene.
@@GenerationMediaReaction - Yes, when I watched it on VHS, the movie was followed by the Roles and the Rules. The color red was part of the rules. Also, discussed the role of Bruce's character and how the interacted (or didn't interact) with him.
There are so many touches that, as you say, reward a second viewing. Cole running from Malcolm when he first sees him and taking refuge in a church, while Malcolm runs after him and clutches his "wound", wrong-footing the audience into thinking he pulled through but still has a weakness there, when he probably doesn't even remember being shot. Then there's the moment in the restaurant when Anna does appear to flick Malcolm an angry look, just for a moment, when he says "I know I've been a little distant; I know that it makes you mad," but she's reacting to the sudden explosion of laughter from the noisy next table.
I think it's quite probable that Malcolm did remember being shot, but in the final scene we see that his perception even as he was dying was that the bullet had passed through him harmlessly, and the wound "didn't even hurt anymore." Since from his perspective, he was still alive, he made the same mistake we in the audience made.
No. Vincent, "The man who shot himself", sees ghosts also. The person speaking Spanish was a ghost trying to communicate with Vincent when he was a child.
Your kid is so smart! Here's yet another movie where he practically had the twist figured out at the beginning. When it jumped forward to the next fall, he was assuming that Malcolm died and wondering how he survived.
Oh D 🥹 such a good heart on ya. 😭 For anyone who wasn't around during the premiere, this movie was IMMENSE, both in storytelling and in popular culture. People would beg their friends to see this movie after the weekend and shut down anyone who tried to spoil it for others. "Did you see it yet!??" was on the lips of everyone coming into work and school over the weekend; an absolute real "must-see" in theaters. And when the dust settled, that tag line was EVERYWHERE, so many parodies and bittersweet musings of missed opportunity, as it became a fixture in popular culture. 🎥🍿🎬 An incredible cultural phenomena that is probably impossible to replicate today. 🤔 It's also so interesting how D wants to help explain the what's going on without spoiling it for J. And v cool how J can really hear how the score is set up for the jump scares. 😅 Literally film school, culture studies, and conversation all at once. Happy Halloween to all 🎃 Here's to an amazing holiday season to come.
Also, not to be overly sensitive, but it's worth mentioning that M. Knight has had a history of his name being incorrectly pronounced specifically as "shamamadingdong" as a joking, passive means of belittlement and r-cist micro agression, which he and his community have asked to stop. It was particularly bad during his press tours in the early-mid 2000's, as his name was made into a joke. Something to think about maybe 🤔
The mother had something called Munchausen by proxy syndrome. It's basically when a caregiver keeps someone unable to care for themselves for the attention, often resulting in death eventually. It's also been responsible for nurses and doctors killing patients for attention.
I heard the current term is Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA). Kind of like Aspergers, I think they're doing away with the old terms with updated, scientific diagnosis.
MBP adds another layer to Cole's message to the little sister, when he says the dead girl was looking out for her. Often the younger sibling is the next victim, if the older one passes away; people suffering from MBP often transfer their compulsion to the next child to continue gaining the sympathy they crave. So the dead girl isn't only seeking justice; she's also protecting her sister from potentially becoming a victim as well.
You guys will have to watch _The Others_ next. It has a similar theme to this movie, but is also distinct. It came out a few years after this, and I consider it the last great ghost story.
I was a young adult when this came out (21 years old). I watched it for the ghost aspect and appreciated the twist. As a married adult now, I don't watch it often, but when I do, and when I watch reactors do this movie, I always give my husband some extra love when I see him next. Today I'll have to wait until he's home from work. I cry at Malcolm's realization and the flashback to what happened every time now. It's always nice when the men that watch this movie are emotionally mature enough to cry at that as well. I've seen plenty of them that laugh to try to keep from crying, but it takes a lot of strength and self-awareness to let yourself feel things enough to cry. I like how you kept checking the kid to make sure he was doing all right and understanding what was going on. I watched this with my 13-year-old niece this year. She handled it really well and understood everything that was going on. It's now one of her favorite movies. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this channel. :)
I was one of the people who didn’t realize he was dead until the end. Another clue that he was dead the whole time, is Malcom never had a shadow. When Cole and him went to the little girls funeral, you see Cole’s shadow but not Malcom’s. Plus Cole told him “they don’t see each other (other ghosts), they only see what they want to see”.
For myself, I started suspecting during the hospital scene when Cole said, "I see dead people. They don't know they're dead." I started watching Malcolm then, not quite convinced but just wondering. And then I noticed he never spoke to anyone but Cole. So by the big reveal, it wasn't such a huge surprise for me but more of a confirmation. That said, it was still a thoroughly enjoyable watch even with my suspicions.
I keep looking back at the funeral scene for the moment where you said that you can see Cole's shadow but not Malcoms...I don't know what part of that scene you mean. I'm assuming you mean where they're outside on the swings...but with the way the sunlight is, and how close Malcolm is to the camera...there's no way you could know he doesn't have a shadow, because it would be off-screen anyway.
@@AlextheHistorian specifically there are shots in the little girls bedroom where you only see Cole’s shadow. But the director admitted there were times where they couldn’t eliminate all of Malcom’s shadows, but hoped no one would notice.
Hah, we just watched this with our kids for Halloween (11 and 13). It was really fun to watch the twist fall into place for them, and to watch it apart from all the media hype/catch phrases I remember being huge back when it came out. So, they really didn't know what to expect!
Hard to believe that little boy is grown now and playing JD Vance on The Daily Show. He's funny. 😅 ❤ Toni Collette brings intelligence and heart in every movie I've seen her in.
In the hospital room where it's just Malcolm & Cole, the hospital blanket Cole is clutching is pink. Of course he needs a blanket cause he's in a room with a ghost.
I am not sure you are aware of this, but there is something called EVP in ghost hunting. In the 1970s, someone found that there were voices on a recording made during an investigation that hadn't been heard by people there when the recording was made. EVP stands for "Electronic Voice Phenomena." The theory is that recording machines pick up voices that the human ear can't hear as it happens (but can hear on playback). It is similar to images that appear on developed film that no one saw when the photo was taken. Ghost Hunters now will ask a series of questions with silence between each question while recording the session. Then they will playback the recording and listen carefully for sounds that seem to answer their questions. So the part of the movie where Malcolm notices the voice in Spanish on his recorded session with Vincent incorporates EVP just like it uses the drop in temperature to indicate the presence of ghosts. Something that I haven't heard any reactors reflect upon is that this movie is telling about how someone becomes a psychic medium - how they learn that they have an ability that could be a gift or a curse and learn to live with it. TV shows like the Ghost Whisperer and Medium are supposedly based on real life people who claim they saw and interacted with spirits from early childhood. A lot of real life situations claim that these abilities run in families so the family is watching for children that show indications of these abilities and are ready to help them cope with them. In the cases of Cole and Vincent, they are born into families that have no clue as to what is going on and are far more likely to think the child has a mental issue. When Cole tells his mother about his secret by saying that the ghosts tell him to do things, it makes me think of the "Son of Sam" killer who claimed that "Sam" told him to kill. Sam was a dog.
Of all of the reactions I have seen to this particular film, this is by far my favorite. You are both a joy to watch, and I feel as though I am watching these reaction along with you. Keep them coming please.
I love watching a new generation seeing this movie for the first time. It is always amazing! I remember when I figured it out and I love how at that time and STILL no one tells people and gives it away!
I saw this in the cinema when it first came out, and I remember my college professor saying she was so disappointed when she first saw it because somebody told her the ending and ruined it for her before she had the chance to see it.
@@moon-moth1 yeah it's easy for people to reveal the twist now in social media, but this person revealed the twist to her way back in 1999, long before memes ever existed.
In case you missed it. The director M Night Shyamalan appears in this movie as the Doctor at the hospital talking with Cole's Mom. Apparently much like Steven King, Quinton Tarantino, and Peter Jackson. He likes to make cameo appearances in the movies he directs.
GREAT reaction! 28:35 That's an older Fahrenheit thermostat, rare these days now that the newer ones are digital. The number on the top is what you set the temperature to. The one on the bottom reflects the actual temperature inside. J's prediction of "now!" at 41:30 was only one second off! That was impressive. He's really picking up the movie patterns that allow you to predict what's going to happen next. My sister would not only talk in her sleep, she'd answer questions truthfully and say things she would have lied about when awake. Good observation at the end. Everything going on with Malcolm and his wife, really Malcolm and everyone who isn't Cole, seems like character development for the sake of the story so it's not just Cole and Malcolm talking in a room for the movie's runtime, but there's so much in those seemingly mundane moments. If Malcolm ever had his coat off, Cole saw the wound. We don't see it because Malcolm's our POV character, we only see what he sees, and we know how that goes. ;) Cole knew the whole time. When my boyfriend and I watched this movie, he called the plot twist way early. The movie was so convincing, I watched the whole thing with that thought in my mind and was 100% sure my bf was wrong right until Cole's words start echoing in Malcolm's mind at the very end.
This might be the most emotional I’ve seen you guys. I remember thinking how amazing it was that a scary movie could capture relatable family dynamics in such an impactful way.
Really loved the comment your son made about Malcolm watching his wife shower (even though he might have misinterpreted a bit) that “everyone needs their privacy.” Very smart kid. That’s an important thing for kids to learn. Great reaction ❤
Loved your reaction. You guys are so fun and interesting to watch! Your dinamic is so great, and I loved all the little looks to the camera regarding you knowing the twist lol. So good! Btw, I think you would love "Signs" also by M. Night Shyamalan. Great movie! Hope one day you will do a reaction for it❤
I've seen this film SO many times, but i've never watched it as intently as i have tonight watching Jay's reaction 😄 knowing what's coming and waiting for that lightbulb moment... so much fun. Your reactions just make me appreciate these movies so much more 😁👍
Oh dad! Oh dad! Hahahahaha...after the first scene and you're like nodding saying I thinks it's gonna be ok, the movie, and the big eyes and doubt!!❤❤❤ Hahahahaha best dad EVER!!!
I absolutely love this film along with the added plot twist. I appreciate that all of the clues were there but I'm pleased that I didn't notice them the first time as it meant that the ending was more of a shock. The film is excellent on multiple levels but the car scene always brings a tear to my eye as well. The dialogue is well written and the incredibly emotional delivery of the lines is simply top notch. Thank you both, I really enjoyed the reaction. You may not have said as much as normal but your facial expressions often said more than words could.
Amazing movie. Haley Joel Osmet is fabulous actor for his young age. Cole also helped Malcolm. Thanks for allowing me to watch with both. Grandma Kat in Colorado, USA❤
Wonderful reaction! One of my favorite films with masterful performances. I loved the child's reaction and how focused he was the entire time! Greetings from Tandil, Argentina! 🇦🇷🤗
So amused that J pointed out "the S word." I forget as an adult that those words really stand out to kids. So good that Cole also had the same reaction.
im bored and needed random things to watch while working today and this was a cute find! loved seeing your emotion during hte car discussion. also your son is so charming. i think partly its the tie and dress shirt ! such a dandy for a reaction vid
This is one of my favorite movies. I love that you guys are doing these reactions together. And you really did a great job as well. Subbed and I’ll check out your other reactions.
50:42 That "Oh, god." and then realisation kicking in was beautiful to watch. Nice edit. I feel I went through those exact thoughts J is having the first time I saw it. This is a heavy film and a thought J handled it much better than D did :). I was a bit worried when he said "the ghosts aren't that scary" because I knew what was coming. J's little looks up to D after a jumpscare were priceless. This one got my sub. Has J ever seen Superman:The Movie? You mentioned that he likes his MCU and you have done Batman so might be an idea. Also, Lord of the Rings? Extended Edition, of course. I'll always watch a react to that. Food for thought. Watching from Melbourne, Australia.
Always excellent!!! That’s when I got it the first time too, J! 😊😊 One of the best twists ever, IMO! 😊👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 J, it’s one of the most iconic lines of all time “I see dead people.” 🥺😄
Great reaction! Seeing the son’s first time reaction and the dad’s second time reaction, sometimes having opposite reaction to the same scene (Cole’s confession to his mother) was great to witness. Of note, we only see Malcom in clothing he wore the night he died… blue shirt, overcoat, suit jacket, and sweatshirt (jumper?). This helped hide the bullet entry and exit to conceal Malcom was one of the ghosts in the film. The bottle of “arsenic“ was actually floor cleaner 😉
Another movie with Haley Joel Osment I'd suggest is "AI - Artificial Intelligence." It was originally a Stanley Kubrick project, but was eventually done by Steven Spielberg after Kubrick's death.
Wow! I just wanted to acknowledge your comment likening Bruce's real life struggle with dementia to that of becoming a ghost. Such a powerful and tragic remark!! I'm sure that's gonna stick in my head and heart for a while as I look forward to and hope for a day when dementia, Alzheimer's and similar diseases no longer exist. Wonderful reaction from you both!
My mother went through Alzheimer’s for eight years. In the last four of those years she didn’t know who I was and would live only as habits of her former self. But every now and then I would see more semblance than usual, and psychologically sometimes it felt she recognised me. Back then I would try and explain this to friends as her being like a ghost, and her condition was haunting. It wasn’t pleasant. But felt the need to mention it here as I now feel strong enough to articulate it. I admire the way Bruce Willis’s family are handling it, and can understand why they are being transparent with the media. Thanks for commenting and listening. It helps.
@@GenerationMediaReactionmy mum spent the majority of her career up until about 6 years ago looking after pensioners with dementia/Alzheimers. She stopped and now works in a hospital but during her time as a carer for those people I remember the stories she’d tell. The amount of her “oldies” as she’d call them who’d always say “who are you?!” Whenever she got to their house or when she went to their room when she moved to a residential care home because they’d forgotten her as soon as she left the room the last time. Some even forgot who she was multiple times during the time when she was doing what she had to do as their carer. And she did everything, fed them, bathed them, clothed them. She worked more hours than anyone I’ve ever known and during the house to house days she’d be driving over a thousand miles every week. I used to go with her to sit in the car when there was nowhere for me to stay some nights. How she did that job for as long as she did always at 110% effort I’ll never know. Even when she had stage 3 breast cancer she ignored the doctors advice to go back to work MONTHS sooner than they advised her. There was something about those “oldies” that meant she just couldn’t stay away. She’d have worked 24 hours a day to care for them if it was humanly possible.
Im fussy on which reactions i watch :) When the good movies come up with you guys its always a pleasure to watch with you. You both have such a big hearts and it really shows.
Hayley Joel Osmet is amazing!! Should check out two more of his movies, he’s amazing in them too: 1. Pay It Forward 2. Second Hand Lions ( adventure/ action)
Very nice seeing you with your son watching this movie. It is violent in a couple places and scary at times, but you did a great job working through it with your son. Good Dad, smart son!
"He'll be repeating that at school." LMAO I love this kid's insights. I could see D was impressed by how quickly J took note of the photo "flashes" too. This young lad is very sharp.
Malcolm always wore the same clothes is a clue. I missed all clues and hints when I first watched it. The color red is one too. Red is a pattern in several of m night shyamalan's movies.
@@GenerationMediaReaction For myself, I started suspecting during the hospital scene when Cole told Malcolm, "They don't know they're dead." I started watching Malcolm then, not quite convinced but just wondering. And then I noticed no one but Cole ever looked at Malcolm. So by the big reveal, it wasn't such a huge surprise for me. That said, it didn't remove any enjoyment for me other than not having the feeling others described at the sudden reveal. Mine was gradual.
I just wanted to call out your editing skills again. You get away with showing far more footage than other reactors because you’re so good with your edits. You hit every story beat just perfectly and it really makes it fun to watch.
Thank you so much for appreciating this. I spend a long time selecting the clips. And often test it with the bots to see where the line is to get flagged. This is where the bulk of the work is with these videos. I try to make them fun but also for you to know wheee we are exactly. In the edit I often see story points that we missed in the reaction, and so include them anyway for this purpose ❤️
I liked this reaction so much, I accidentally liked, unliked, and re-liked it again, lol. I love how engaged you two were, with both the intellectual and emotional aspects of the story. It would be fun to see you rewatch it together, after some time, to see what new details pop up for you (like the use of red throughout the film and all the one-sided conversations Malcolm doesn't realize he's having), now that the twist has been revealed. Can't wait for the next one! 😊
Thank you for this. It's been very nice watching clips of this compelling film with you and your son but - but poor boy! He's very brave sitting through that intensity! Of course, it's powerful, beautiful, intriguing, thoughtful film, full of depth, reflection and mystery. One that stays with you long after it finishes. I think your son was right though - the doctor didn't believe the original patient who could see dead people. When he played the tapes back he could hear them at a higher volume and hear the living complain about the sudden cold.
Also, it’s bittersweet watching this movie again. With Bruce Willis and his health conditions getting worse and worse. I believe it was dementia? Definitely thinking of his family 😢
My father in law is going through it, beginning stages, it's hard, my husband and I have him over alot to spend time with him I hope I never get this disease so sad
just want to say, well done to dad! It was so hard not to give it away and you did amazing, didn't let anything out. Great reaction and review as always
Those scenes you were talking about that you said aren't clues, they are clues. Those were clues that they put in for us to catch. And they were even thinking they put to many clues in. Yet somehow most of us didn't figure it out
I really appreciate your reactions with your son. I often turned to older movies when I raised my boys. A couple of favorites I remember were Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy, The Wind and the Lion with Sean Connery, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Shane with Alan Ladd. Really inspiring stories for boys. And National Velvwt with Elizabeth Taylor, even though it's about a girl.
Great film, especially on first viewing, the twist is delivered brilliantly. HJO was a great child actor back in the day. And Bruce Willis performed a civilian role well in a non-action movie. I consider this a psychological thriller rather than a horror film, but however you see it, it is a top-notch movie and deserves high praise, there aren't too many like this in terms of being less predictible than usual. Glad you enjoyed it, Lando's inquisitive mind pays off, smart lad, but good to see that he also didn't expect that ending, which makes it more enjoyable when the big reveal comes out. Looking forward to your next reaction, until then - take care!
Love watching both your reactions. Despite there being some heavy subjects it's great that you can discuss it afterward and how your son is picking up filmmaking cues like the build up of suspense in the music which leads to a jump scare moment. It's great to begin to understand films much deeper and understand why the director or cinematographer are making certain decisions. Looking forward to more!
what a lovely reaction! loved that one of you could relate to Cole as a child and student and son, and one could relate to Malcolm as an adult and husband and Lynn (Cole's mom) as a parent. also, I liked the video at 4:33. 😅
I dont think I've watched this since i first watched it when it came out, forgot how good it was, love M Nights movies. Hayley Joel Osmont was great in this, i really like him in Second Hand Lions and Pay it Forward as well.
Vincent absolutely did see ghosts. Several things point to this throughout the film: -He is seen with white streaks in his hair and scratches on his back, just like Cole. -When Anna (Malcolm's wife) is alone in the wine cellar, she suddenly feels cold and runs back upstairs in fright. From the bathroom, Vincent first addresses Anna by saying, "do you know why you're afraid when you're alone? I do". This scene is replayed as a memory while Malcolm is back in the basement, which gives him the idea to check Vincent's old audio recordings. -On the audio recording, that is a man's voice speaking Spanish. It's very common ghost lore that people who can't hear a ghost speaking in person, CAN hear a voice from a recording. The man says, "Save me, God. I don't want to die in this place". This leads us to assume that the therapy session was taking place in a hospital setting. Malcolm has left the room while Vincent is being tormented by that ghost. When Malcolm returns to Vincent, he finds him crying from fear. Malcolm asks him why he's crying, to which Vincent responds, "you won't believe". The reason Malcolm realizes that Cole is truly seeing dead people, is because he was able to hear the voice of one on tape, during a session with Vincent. He realizes WHY Vincent never recovered: he had the same problem as Cole. Same symptoms, same mannerisms-- Malcolm even gave Cole the same initial diagnosis as Vincent: "possible mood disorder?", in his notes.
@GenerationMediaReaction not a problem. Love your reactions. You give your boy space to give his thoughts on the subject matter, and rather than correcting him directly, you tell him how you've read the situation differently. I learned a lot through movies as a kid. Mainly, they helped me to practice understanding context clues. We also read a LOT. The concept of context clues was hammered into us in class when I was growing up, but is sadly not well taught to the younger generations. I've noticed, both in person and through other film reactions, that this skill seems to be lost in generations Z and Alpha. For example, if they haven't heard an expression or word before, they seem unable to look at the context to understand. However with your reactions, I can see your boy is often quite capable of putting the pieces together, and when he's struggling, you effectively guide him. Well done to you. I've decided to subscribe to the channel! Great content!
Another way they kept the surprise that Malcolm's dead is not letting you see his left hand closely after the shooting. Since Bruce Willis is left handed, they had to shoot the closeups of him writing notes right handed. That keeps you from seeing his wedding ring is missing until the end reveal. Also the fact that she kept his ring to hold onto rather than bury him in it shows that while she was definitely trying to sell that ring in her shop, the line she told the couple about dead people leaving their imprints on belongings is something she truly believes. It's not just a sales pitch. She wanted to hold onto it to keep feeling him close.
Man, the scene of him and his mom in the car gets me. every. time...
Yeah, it’s done so well ❤️
Toni Collette deserves a medal for her performance and her contribution to the art of acting.
She’s amazing !
Little Miss Sunshine too.
That last scene with her always makes me tear up no matter how many times I watch it 😢
You’re terrible, Muriel!
Little Miss Sunshine!!! Oh, please watch it together. You’ll love it.
“The Others” is another good movie in this genre.
Really Good 👍 ❤
Two of my favorite scenes: The scene where Kyra's daddy watches the VHS tape and realizes that his wife has been poisoning their daughters.
It’s an immaculate film
You're so right. And the funeral scene is a fantastic lesson on how an actors' expression and a little push in dolly move can be used as exposition. Seems obvious, but up to that point most watching the film would still be wondering if their interpretation of what they are seeing is correct. The mother had been poisoning her daughter! All confirmed to the viewer without any words spoken. And Wood's expression of shocked grief... as you point out, is masterfully crafted.
lol i love how the dad says "i forgot how intense this movie gets. hope it.ll be o.k" and than the look on your face lol priceless 👍🇨🇦
The, I may have messed up here look.
6:45 😂
Congratulations on having such a wonderful relationship with your son. I can only wish I had that with my father. Also, this is an amazing movie and I am glad you experienced it.
Thank you so much!
"Are you a good doctor?"
"I used to be "
The foreshadowing was subtle, but seeing you go wide-eyed at that moment made it finally click for me.
Nice catch, D!
Yet another great reaction video from you guys-looking forward to the next one!
This kid seems so very intelligent for his age. Comments you'd hear from an adult not a kid. Seems very well educated and great raising from the parents. GJ Dad! Great reaction!!!
Have you like not even met another child ever? 😑🙄😒
Omg you really need to shut up and get a grip.
“CoMmEnTs yOuD hEaR fRoM aN aDuLt nOt a KiD.” Please shut up. You’re embarrassing yourself.
Aw thank you for watching
I'm sure you get this often. And I haven't read through all the comments. But, you are a joy to watch. Even for the sad films. What a mature young man you have. And a breath of fresh air to see a healthy relationship between you. So glad to have stumbled across your channel in my algorithm and subscribed. Thank you both. ❤
Thank you so much! We slowly making our way through some great films ❤️
I was curious how Jay handled the big plot twist. I say he handled it well.
Ironically, This is his most successful film, 672 m$ in the box office
@@tashkentyActually I read that Bruce took a smaller paycheque and decided to get a percentage of the profits for this movie as he was so sure of its success!
Great peformances by Willis & Collette but kid's acting is better than 90% of Hollywood, I was absolutely astonished the first time I saw this film.
it's almost not real - outstanding!
The point in which Cole pulls the sword from the stone in the play is the point where we know that he's okay now.
It is also the first of a sequence of happy and touching events that completely distracts you from the final twist and makes you believe that the final scene is just going to be Malcolm reconciling with his wife. Brilliant storytelling!
Vincent saw ghost too. Malcolm just didn't figure it out in time to help him so the kid went crazy.
Donnie Wahlberg's one scene is better than all of Mark's combined.
Toni Collette's portrayal is phenomenal.
Haley Joel Osment should have gotten ten times the salary for this film.
Fantastic writing. Incredible cinematography.
It’s special
As many have previously mentioned here, per the demands of M. Night Shyamalan, the color red was only to be used for objects that were affected in some way by death. In the special features of my DVD of this movie, there is an interview with M. Night Shyamalan where he describes how prior to filming a scene he would first walk around the set and if there was anything in the scene that was red that wasn't connected to death, he would immediately remove it from the scene.
Am going to have to watch it again with this in mind !
Need to watch it again!
Yes this makes sense
Your kid is so smart! Here's yet another movie where he practically had the twist figured out at the beginning. When it jumped forward to the next fall, he was assuming that Malcolm died and wondering how he survived.
I know, right. And the thing is, this is because he doesn’t look upon Bruce Willis as a lead actor yet!
Your facial expressions whenever your son guesses something (or doesn't) are gold. 😆
Great video guys.. looking forward to the next
Thank you!! 😁
4:47 Donnie Walhberg btw. 😊
100%. That's exactly how it was.
Yes and about what she poured in the food: it looks like Pine Sol, a brand of floor cleaner and disinfectant.
If you're curious the stuff she's pouring in to poison the soup is a lookalike to Pine Sol a cleaner we have here.
Most Americans would recognize the bottle shape and color as cleaner but I can see why others wouldn't recognize it right away.
@@treefeathers Indeed!
Thank you!
Aussie here. Always assumed it was some domestic cleaner she was using. Pretty sure this was based on a real case.
Thank you so much. I love films that we have a different reaction to when there’s a time jump in our lives
@db_cooks oh I see. Thanks for replying
Hah, we just watched this with our kids for Halloween (11 and 13). It was really fun to watch the twist fall into place for them, and to watch it apart from all the media hype/catch phrases I remember being huge back when it came out. So, they really didn't know what to expect!
Excellent!
Hard to believe that little boy is grown now and playing JD Vance on The Daily Show. He's funny. 😅
❤ Toni Collette brings intelligence and heart in every movie I've seen her in.
So he's another woke Hollywood establishment mouthpiece? Got it. 👍😑
No one ever notices that something is RED in every scene having to do with a ghost.. shirt, door know, dress, balloon, etc... great reaction tho!!
Needs a rewatch with the red theme in mind
In the hospital room where it's just Malcolm & Cole, the hospital blanket Cole is clutching is pink. Of course he needs a blanket cause he's in a room with a ghost.
I like how the son kept asking crucial questions, and the dad tried hard not to spoil the plot with his answers.
I don't think there's ever been a better OMG scene done better than the ring rolling across the floor. Magnificent.
Wow, thank you!
My favorite reaction to this movie also. Deeply touching.
What a great dad.
Signs is a great M Night film
Signs is an Amazing Movie.
Brutal. I was just thinking about how this kid is so far removed from the "Wow the ending us nuts" craze that he'd not have even a hint.
You forgot Hitchcock! He started it all!
Your young dude is so much more aware than I was. He gets it. Cool video guys :)
This might be the most emotional I’ve seen you guys. I remember thinking how amazing it was that a scary movie could capture relatable family dynamics in such an impactful way.
It’s very warm and empathetic so it triggers a lot
Watching the father reaction to the Sixth Sense was so touching.
No comments are really needed…your eyes and facial expressions speak volumes. Great reaction to a truly great film 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Really loved the comment your son made about Malcolm watching his wife shower (even though he might have misinterpreted a bit) that “everyone needs their privacy.” Very smart kid. That’s an important thing for kids to learn. Great reaction ❤
Thank you! The thing is, the way it was directed and acted (because of the plot twist coming), it was indeed a bit weird behaviour as well
@@GenerationMediaReactionyes!! Didn’t really want to think about the ghosts in my house watching me take my showers. New fear unlocked lol 🫠
Loved your reaction. You guys are so fun and interesting to watch! Your dinamic is so great, and I loved all the little looks to the camera regarding you knowing the twist lol. So good!
Btw, I think you would love "Signs" also by M. Night Shyamalan. Great movie! Hope one day you will do a reaction for it❤
Thank you. We may have opened the M. Night Shyamalan box !
I've seen this film SO many times, but i've never watched it as intently as i have tonight watching Jay's reaction 😄 knowing what's coming and waiting for that lightbulb moment... so much fun. Your reactions just make me appreciate these movies so much more 😁👍
Thanks again for watching. This one was interesting for its stimulation of empathy
Oh dad!
This might be one of my favorites. J had me laughing at every jump scare and I was tearing up with both of you at the end.

44:48 such a great reaction on so many levels, but this line from the young bloke was the highlight in my opinion! Well played!
So amused that J pointed out "the S word." I forget as an adult that those words really stand out to kids. So good that Cole also had the same reaction.

This is one of my favorite movies.
I love that you guys are doing these reactions together. And you really did a great job as well. Subbed and I’ll check out your other reactions.
Thank you! We plan on doing more !
Thank you, there’s so many films to watch. It’s hard narrowing it down. Superman would be interesting
Always excellent!!! That’s when I got it the first time too, J! 😊😊 One of the best twists ever, IMO! 😊👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
J, it’s one of the most iconic lines of all time “I see dead people.” 🥺😄
Great reaction!
Yeah this film can conjure a lot
Another movie with Haley Joel Osment I'd suggest is "AI - Artificial Intelligence." It was originally a Stanley Kubrick project, but was eventually done by Steven Spielberg after Kubrick's death.
Pay It Forward is also a really good one!
Haley Joel Osment in "Second Hand Lions." Awesome.
Enjoyed your reaction. The puppy you see in their home is a ghost too.

Malcolm always wore the same clothes is a clue. I missed all clues and hints when I first watched it. The color red is one too. Red is a pattern in several of m night shyamalan's movies.

Not so much the same clothes, but all the clothes he wears are ones he was wearing or touched the night he died.
Excited to see your guys reaction to the twist!!
Thank you!
That lady ghost who walked by the bathroom deserves all the Oscars.
Thank you for watching 😎👍
'Really excellent reaction.
Thanks for sharing. It's like seeing this for first time, watching someone else go through the discoveries. Well done.
Amazing reaction. Love you guys.❤
Also, it’s bittersweet watching this movie again. With Bruce Willis and his health conditions getting worse and worse. I believe it was dementia?

I really appreciate your reactions with your son. I often turned to older movies when I raised my boys. A couple of favorites I remember were Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy, The Wind and the Lion with Sean Connery, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Shane with Alan Ladd. Really inspiring stories for boys. And National Velvwt with Elizabeth Taylor, even though it's about a girl.
Thank, we will cover more as we go forward

Do you think this is always Grandma or lots of different other ghosts ?

Thank you!
Thank you! Can’t wait for him to really embrace, understand and to recognise top quality filmmaking

Still my favorite M. Night movie. The twist... wow. I hope the kid's okay after this. There are some pretty intense scenes.
He’s fine, thanks for asking 😀
I can't wait for M. Night Shyamalan's _The Village_ and the _Unbreakable_ trilogy.
Vincent absolutely did see ghosts. Several things point to this throughout the film:
-He is seen with white streaks in his hair and scratches on his back, just like Cole.
This all makes sense, thank you
@GenerationMediaReaction not a problem.
@@veggiesarefruitsthank you! You have a good point with ‘context’. Films are a great way to learn both context and empathy.
