INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996) FIRST TIME WATCHING - MOVIE REACTION - PERFECT HOLIDAY FILM!

- Welcome to our first time watching Independence Day (1996). This is the Extended version.
Happy 4th July! This is really good fun, surprising, a little jumpy, epic in scale and genuinely funny. All in all, a perfect holiday film to just simply enjoy! Bring back the blockbuster! Written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, Directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Randy Quaid and Margaret Colin.
What strikes us about this film is the epic scale and vision and the multi-protagonist story structure. There are cheesy moments, but it shouldn't steer attention away from what is a complicated script to juggle all the stories and the execution of it is outstanding. It manages to hit blockbuster epic and all the comedy as well.

Hey everyone, thanks for joining us. And happy 4th July! As you can see in our summary of this film, we really enjoyed it. Of course it's not the most sophisticated of works our there, but we have great fun anyway. It's actually a really complicated script that they manage to weave and that's hard work! And we loved the humour as well! Perfect easy day viewing film! This is the Extended version by the way. Enjoy !
"Is that the guy from Jurrasic Park?"
>A single tear runs down my eye in approval
Jeff Goldblum grew up near me. His dad was my dermatologist in grade school. Anyone care? Probably not, just thought I'd share.
Thats cool !
Lame claim to fame. 🤣 There’s a comedy show that covers that kind of thing and this definitely qualifies. No offense. Yours is a good one.
🤣😂🤣 What an awesome Dad! That intro was priceless!
Describing the most boring thing for a kid ever and thirty seconds of silence later, “oh.”
✌️😉👍💕
You have a very smart son. Good job Dad!
Oh his poor face when you're telling him what it's about, I'm dead 😂🤣😂🤣 my kids would have said no thanks and left at that age so fair play to him 🤣
1:01 at the start... OMG 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 the kid's face expression says it all
Felt a little bad with that trolling!
I get the impression quite regularly that he'd rather be literally anywhere else than here watching these movies. As a reactor myself i've started being able to notice certain things from others. Either that or the kid always look that unarsed about everything lol. Which is definitely possible. Most Kids these days only look happy when getting a new smartphone for Christmas or a new fortnite add on...
@@YorkshiremanReacts26 Dad, just play the movie.
This video was about 2 people sitting in a room watching a historic movie. :D
@@GenerationMediaReaction War of Worlds by Steven Spielberg with Tom Cruise is another good alien invasion movie, this one is more in first person, since the invasion is not shown on a massive scale as in Independence Day, but we follow and live only what Tom Cruise's character's family lives during the invasion, we do not see what happens elsewhere.
Your boy has a really good insight on the world and beyond. His guesses about the movies plot were pretty on point and his observation of David and Steve saving "Many" planets was some deep thinking. Love to see it! foster that intellect!
I know! He got the link to Independence Day very early!
"thats how you get aliens" best line in this reaction and it came from your son :)
I'm happy to see my favorite movie of all time is making its rounds around for reactions.
Yes! Watch Men In Black, also Mars Attacks!
What a very smart young man you have there dad!! Great show to watch on our Independence day!! Love your reactions! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🎉🎆 I wish we had a president give a speech like the one he gave in the movie!!😊
What a great pep talk before watching. That looks like something I would do, lol. The look on your son's face when you said "It's lots of talking," was worth all the tea in Boston Harbor. The payoff of his reaction at the end was even better.
That thumbnail 😅
Independence Day was the one movie premiere I attended when growing up in Norway that had a laser show and everything prior to the screening, and where people went wild and cheered multiple times during the actual screening, just like they do in the U.S., and it was a blast!
If the landscape of movies is big menu of variety of foods, then very now and then, one must indulge in the cheese course!
"and the British were like yay.." until 36 years later when they came back lol
shhh!
Independence Day 2 : The Revenge
😂😂😂
The dad sacrificing himself always gets is ,BOYS AM BKKKKK 😢😂😢
XD I love the joke you played on his expectations
ooops!
An extraordinary film about a bunch of old men sitting in a room talking :D
12 Angry Men !
@@GenerationMediaReaction That is exactly what I was thinking! 😂🐧
In style this film was a throwback to the Disaster Movies of the 70s, like 'Earthquake' and 'The Towering Inferno.' Big cast of famous faces, overlapping stories of survival etc. High body count a consistent feature.
I remember going to the theater to see this, and remember seeing my preacher from church walking down the aisle. It was a big movie! Lol
Yeah remember it being very popular too. Deservedly so!
I saw this in the theater when this 1st came out, and we all cheered when Boomer the dog made it!
I love your face when you got the "Good Morning, Dave", and your son sitting there with it flying right over his head!
Yes!
He did a good job connecting the DEFCON moment to the movie War Games. 👍
Your reactions to the appearance of the British characters were worth the thumbs up alone!
Haha!
loving this father son relationship , well done.. you should watch the movie "armageddon" it is fantastic and you two will love it
Good idea - we want to balance these more blockbuster types with some solid good films for a little bit, so Armageddon is a great one when we need to back to blockbuster scale
@@GenerationMediaReaction awesome
Oh, yes, is a must see movie! 🥰
Please! 🥰@@GenerationMediaReaction
Jeff Goldblum references Jurassic Park a few times, most notably near the end he tells Will Smith must go faster, awesome movie.
I just wanted to say how much I love watching your reaction videos where you and your son watch cinema classics together. It's not just about the movies; the real joy is seeing the wonderful dynamic you share. You're creating unforgettable moments between father and son. I also want to praise your son's ability to watch and interpret the movies from his perspective-he's shown me details I never noticed before. After watching your reactions, I always feel inspired to watch the movies and enjoy them even more. Sending you lots of love from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you! It’s hard sometimes which films to choose !
Brent Spiner (Dr. Orkin) played Data in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series. His character's name (Orkin) is a play on the name of a bug spray company. From 1965-1980, I lived in the town of El Toro, CA. El Toro was a nearby Marine base that was closed down during the Reagan era.
BTW, the Roswell Incident happened in 1947, not the 1950s.
45:40 One of the best inspirational speeches in movies, second to Captain America’s speeches in the MCU and Mikey’s “it’s our time” speech from The Goonies.
"look up" haha. when he said that i thought that would be a great movie to watch with him
I was a kid when the movie was shown in the theater, and I liked it so much that I went to see it every Sunday. I must have seen it about 9 or 10 times, I saw it until they removed it from the theater. Then, when it came out on video, I rented it very frequently. I like many things about it: The practical effects are the best. The practical effects will always look more real than the CGI effects, which are unfortunate, as could be seen in the sequel to Independence Day, which was a failure. I also liked the fact that it is an ensemble film, with several main characters, and that the characters have a well-designed narrative arc: They all had an objective or goal, an obstacle, defects, virtues, and in the end, thanks to the invasion , everyone achieves their redemption: Levison manages to demonstrate his intelligence, Russell demonstrates that he can be more than a drunk, Steve manages to fulfill his dream of going to space, and the president proves to be a leader who accompanies his troops to combat. Conny, Levinson's wife, finally gets to feel like part of something special, and Jazmin gets a family by marrying Steven. It seems to me that not all of the movie was humorous, I think the humorous part was carried out only by Steve and Julius (Levinson's father). The rest of the film was dramatic, especially the death of the first lady and Russell's alcoholism. I think the only thing I had to object to was the anti-climactic nature of the scene in which Steve hits the alien, it seemed plausible that a member of the US Marine Corps would dare to approach the ship and an alien hand-to-hand, without knowing the species, not knowing how dangerous they could be.
Yeah it’s a complicated script juggling all those character arcs and it does it well
Lol, actual British people laughing at the Middle-Earth British accents.
Great description of what the film is about to get him excited to watch!
Yeah I know, but he knew I was playing him very soon after
What a find! You two are great subbed enjoy the hollywood journey young man 👍
Thank you! Will do!
Remember Obama was in his 40s, not that old at all. Bush was in his mid 50s when he was in. Clinton as well was young. But as Reagan once said in a debate, "Many people voting this fall will be worried about age of the president,.........I will overlook my opponent's youth and inexperience for this debate". He was running for reelection in his 70s.
What always struck me about this movie was the sheer brutality of the aliens arrival and attack and mankind's complete helplessness almost til the end of the movie. The aliens weren't motivated by hate towards mankind or nothing like that: they simply chose Earth as their new home and were cleaning out the pests that were there, like we do with ants or cockroaches, so it's very unsettling to see a far more advanced species do the same thing to us! Great reaction, I first watched it when I was a little younger than your kid and this movie still amazes me to this day!
Its definitely special... so glad we decided to watch it
I'm breaking my Will Smith boycott just to see your reaction. 🙂
OMG! I thought the same thing when I started to watch this. 😄
I believe America has a rule that says no one under 35 can run for President.
This is correct. Under our Constitution, a person must be at least 36 years old upon assuming the office. This means they can be 35 while running for office, but not younger, provided they'll be 36 upon taking the oath in January.
Should be a Rule No One Over 70 can Run!
@@jamesalexander5623 That would disqualify literally every person running for the office this year.
And I am not complaining. I'll take it.
@@BoboftheOldeWays I think you're mistaken. The U.S. Constitution (Article II, Section 1, Paragraph 5) sets the minimum age for a U.S. President at 35. Nothing about how old you have to be to run, and no requirement that the President be 36 when he takes office.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 36 ‘twas a typo/brain fart on my part, then.
And sure, the Constitution doesn’t say you can’t run for the office if you’re younger than 35, but given that you have to BE 35 to serve, that mandate acts as a de facto restriction on anyone younger than that running.
You're the first reactor who got the movie the way I did when I first saw it, It's a cheesy but fun ride -- sort of like a rollercoaster. Or more like the water ride where you go down a shoot and get water splashed on you. Not much to it but thrilling nonetheless and refreshing on a hot summer day. So many people take it WAY too seriously.
Ah thanks! I guess some others take it seriously and like to point out its flaws ?
You guys are the best! Great reaction!
Thank you!! 😁
The plaque is really on the moon. I watched the live telecast as he climbed down from the capsule and took the first steps on the moon.
1776 is the film where they are in the room lol
Wondering what the guys would think of the musical, ‘Hamilton’
I love watching your reactions. Such a fun thing for father and son to do. :)
You are so kind
Yeah the benefits of doing the videos are massive, he's growing in confidence and expression
He's smiling and talking more lately. 😊 Do you two do the reactions in the morning or evening? He does a lot of yawning. 😂
I remember the posters for this movie in theaters were kind of weird and cryptic. They had a shortened code title in big letters: "ID4", which never made any sense to me. Okay so it's the fourth of July and maybe the 4th day after the aliens show up, but when you haven't seen the movie yet, that's just a weird way to market the movie. I guess it made people curious to see it.
Even at the time, it was a very “Yay ‘Merica!” In many ways. In their defence, having served in the military myself, the British officers portrayed is fairly accurate. This does have one of the greatest Movie speeches ever. This one and the one in Pacific Rim are ones I really remember.
Hope you all are having a Happy 4th of July. This film is just done so well with great action scenes. The visual effects for this film were well done. Randy Quaid, who plays Russell Casse, is in real life, the younger brother of actor Dennis Quaid. This cast is very well stacked. Gmad you also introduced your son to the greatness of Jeff Goldblum. Such a iconic and funny actor. If you want to see more films by Roland Emmerich, I recommend two. First, Godzilla 1998, a great popcorn monster film looselybased off of the Godzilla Character. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno and Actor and Comedian Hank Azaria. Finally, I also recommend "White House Down" a great 2013 film when armed terrorists take over The White House. Stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Woods. It is a great action film by Emmerich. Glad to see you both enjoying this film.😊
Nice setup!
Thanks!
I'm sure one day the boy will look back on this with fond memories but right now he's probably like oh my God Dad do we have to do this again😂😂 good sport though!!
It is not historically accurate at all but you guys could watch the movie The Patriot staring Mel Gibson.
That movie is almost comical with how it dehumanizes The British.
I die laughing every time one of the Redcoats is trying to surrender. "PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GA-*bangbangbangbang*" "They were surrendering!" "Hell, he's a redcoat, they're all the same!"
@@TriarchVisgroup yeah it's pretty pro American propaganda. I could only imagine if it was made just a few years later, after 9/11 how much more insane it would be.
Oh please do it MIB 🥳
This is my birthday movie. I have watched it every year since I saw it in theaters with my parents back in 1996. I love this movie. It is absolutely what I would call a classic example of popcorn entertainment. You've got action, suspense, romance, great visual effects(Still looks amazing even 28 years later)... It's just great. I'm 36 years old today. I can't wait to dig in and hear what you guys think.
I know you guys don't celebrate, obviously, but cheers to our friends across the pond!
Spoiler alert: we loved it!
@@GenerationMediaReaction It looks like! I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
I may have said this on a previous video, but, this is a great idea for a channel. In 10-15 years, this is going to be a fantastic time capsule for your son.
58:44 this is definitely the Star Wars reference.
The actor with the raspy voice is Harvey Fierstein, a multi-Tony Award winning actor and writer.
Independence Day is one of two movies that people watch as tradition on the 4th of July. The other is "1776".
Also, in 1996, there was another alien invasion movie called "The Arrival". It is a much more realistic and intelligent film but was mostly overshadowed by Independence Day's explosions.
I watched it last year and loved it, then it recommended i watch the 2nd movie, but was so bad lol. It's always like this when you find something good from the 90s lol
That moment or so when you could see your son wasn't quite sure if you were joking about what the film was about, and yet he still was willing to go along with it to please you, his father, was simultaneously funny and undearing.
When Will Smith mentioned "E.T." it made me wonder if your son has seen that film? I am assuming you have. About "Men In Black": I do think your son would enjoy that one.
Thanks for the Independence Day greeting. Looking forward to your next review!
Thank you. We have seen ET but not MIB
Watch "What About Bob?" with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. Classic and very funny!
It really was that epic in the theater
"How is it cheesy?" Dad about to give his boy a lesson in being proper Brit lol, none of that American bombastic stuff lol😂
Best movie president
If that plaque is actually on the moon, then we know that they actually did land on the moon in 1969 😂
59:04 The radiation from a nuke is nothing when compared to the radiation the Sun puts out every hour.
That intro would make a great short. Might add some Subs.
Happy Independence Day!
You too!!
I’ve watched this movie so many times but your version had a good handful of small scenes I’ve never seen before. Was this a director’s cut or something? Maybe your UK version is a bit different? Great video boys!
It was the Extended version, so something like 9mins of additional scenes
The joke at the beginning totally had me rolling LMAO 🤣🐧 When are you guys gonna watch The Monster Squad?
"Yeah... they wanted to get the wording right." Hahahaha!
Happy Independence Day! Down with the British.
For anyone watching along this is the special edition, might be a good idea to watch that version for more backstory and a truly better version
ah yes, should have said! It's the extended version - thanks!
41:05 The shield activates when something of a certain velocity strikes it. You can walk up to it, but a bullet will trigger the thing.
Mars Attacks is a fun one you both should check out. Classic Tim Burton
The attack of the Reese Peanutbutter Cups and the massive Nintendo N64 controller out in space 😆 🤣 😂 when I first saw this movie 🎥
How nice to see the practical effects of the 90s, much more realistic than today's CGI.
Is he young ?! Ouch kid. LOL!
Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution sets the minimum age for a U.S. President at 35.
You both should totally check out the Patriot! An amazing movie! God Bless from So. Cal USA 🇺🇸 and Happy Fourth of July 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 from My mom and I. Just discovered your channel! Love it
Did you recognize when Jeff Goldblum quoted _Jurassic Park?_
Please watch the _Men in Black_ original trilogy!
Every time the kid says “oh my god” take a shot 🥃
I like this
who ever wrote that should be the president
Imagine this is 30 years old! If we watched a 30 year old movie in 1995 the special effects would be a joke! LOL. Happy 4th of July Britain! I know it's not a thing but Happy 4th anyway.
Hello, glad you both enjoyed the movie. Here is an important question, why was the Airforce the only military unit available to fight? Even in the 1990's we had mobile missile launchers, SAM batteries, anti-aircraft guns.
good question, they maybe only wanted to stay with the airforce for the President pilot storyline
Yes on “Men in Black “! 🎉❤
Ok then! It's been on the list for a while, but after Independence Day, and the comments, we will accelerate Men in Black up the queue!
Another great video guys. Bill Pullman kinda sounds like trump. I never noticed it until watching him do the speech this time.
in the speech ... yeah similar sound definitely, we noticed that
Love that clip from 'The Day The Earth Stood Still'(1951). One of my personal all-time favorite films. Check it out sometime if you haven't seen it.
Happy 4th of July everyone! 🎉 you know the old saying: there’s an American being born every minute on this planet, we’re just waiting on them to come home
I recommend Mars Attacks next 😁
For an American Movie its very International or German! Composer is British, Cameraman and Director is German and a lot of the Special Effects Crew.
You and your son should watch Twister 1996 its a fun film and some other films you guys might like are goosebumps 2015 and 2018 movies with Jack black , Critters 1986, five nights at freddy 2023, super 8 2011 and the karate kid movies 1984,1986 and 1989 versions.
The need to make sure we know you dont find this a sophisticated movie 😂. Its ok, its a movie about aliens and its enjoyable!
You say its hot? I'm in southern Georgia, US. This week it is 98 degrees with 80-90% humidity. It is like practicing for hell.
1:18 hahahahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣
1:17 Excellente blague, et très bon jeu d'acteur. ha ha ha. La tête qu'il fait !
I remember seeing this in the theatre on its opening day. It still works and “breathes” as freshly as it did back then. Highly effective filmmaking!
Recommendation: Definitely do Men in Black!
Warning: Definitely avoid the sequel to “Independence Day: Resurgence”. They do NOT capture lightning in a bottle the second time!
Yeah think Men In Black is on the cards!
3:02 "Will the aliens help write the Declaration of Independence?"
hehe!
I won tickets to see this at a midnight showing when it came out. I probably saw like 10 more times that summer. It’s just a fun popcorn flick check your brain out and just enjoy it.🖖 I do not have kids but the way you mess with him at the beginning was funny and I would probably do the same thing.
I think you guys would enjoy "Men in Black" if one of you hasn't seen it or even if it's just been awhile. Also, it's the 30th anniversary of the original "The Lion King"
Gotta correct you, in the 90s recycling was HUGE
You can tell your son is reaching the age of reason. Compare this reaction to his first few. It'll blow your mind. 🙂
His film literacy is broadening too
The only cheesy part of the movie is that aliens from another galaxy which implies they can traverse galaxies would be running windows 3.1 or Windows 95 or Apple II which despite us not being able to replicate their power source we "stole" and used it against them.
Your sun called it. 👍
Yeah he did !
Make him watch Armageddon, it's also a movie in that style, a multi-character disaster movie drama with touches of humor, which is basically the definition of a summer Blockbuster.
It’s a great idea. But he hasn’t yet seen a Bruce Willis film and I’m hoping he sees Die Hard first, which we are planning to build to.
Now, there actually is a movie like the one you pretended you were going to watch. It's called "1776", a filmed version of the stage musical of the same name. Set at the time of the American revolution, it dramatizes the debate over the issues surrounding American independence, and the creation of - and finally the signing of - the Declaration of Independence. Not exactly as action-packed as "Independence Day", but pretty well regarded and always gets watched on the 4th of July.
Viewing for next year sorted then ! 🤓
@@GenerationMediaReactionCan't wait! Seriously, you should watch 1776.
Space already has massive radiation.
“Look up”
This is the Will Smith that I remember. He was cool, Still is!. You just can't be slapping Chris Rock in the face. It looks bad with the kids. Just my thoughts. positive thoughts and support.
