      My problem is the cables and plugs 😂

    • @viviennejordan215
      @viviennejordan215 4 года назад +1

      Katherine Canon Label them, what type of plug, + what it can be used for, esp if multifunctional. Don't ever pull from the end, where it connects. In time the cable can split, exposing the wires.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 4 года назад +3

      @@viviennejordan215 I keep mine in zip lock bags with an index card that reads what type of cable it is or what device it's for. The bags then go into a box with other cables. The end result is that I know very quickly where the cables themselves go. Fortunately, the variation in cables seems to be subsiding as most of them are now some sort of USB cable that are usually interchangeable with others of the same variety.
      I also make a point of labeling power bricks that don't come with clear labeling about what device they go with. It can be a royal pain dealing with them when the power brick and the device get separated. But, you can usually get a generic power supply, provided it fits, has the right polarity and has the right voltage/amperage to match the device. And that's usually labeled on both the power supply and the device.

      In that same vein, I have to take issue with builders who don't include necessities in a home/apartment structure: coat closet, linen closet, drawers in a kitchen or bathroom, food pantry, outlets in all rooms and hallways, ....and a multitude of other things. Don't laugh, as someone who has rented all over the USA, major things get skipped in apartments when the owners never have to live in them!

    Just want to share a quick hack (if you can call it that) on an alternative to label makers (if you're unsure to buy or not)
    Use masking tape or paper tape for labeling stuff. So long as the tape is sticky enough to stick on to things but not too sticky that it's difficult to rip it off. And you can just write what you want to label on them with marker pens 👍👍👍

    One thing that helped me when my son was young ( and then when the grandkids were young!) was to put some of his toys away in a bin for a month or two (or longer), then rotate something else out and bring back the first batch. It keeps them feeling like they have new toys to play with and decreases boredom. When you pull out a box and get a big ho-hum response, it may be time to donate or pass on to a younger child. (It also minimizes the overwhelming factor when it’s time to have them start learning to put things away!)

    I lived for 19 years in a 9'x11' room. Less than 100sq ft I am a queen of storage solutions. I'm also an artist so the amount of art supply clutter I have is insane. I had a loft bed by utter necessity. A drafting table wouldn't fit if that bed was on the ground. My dad built my bed when I was 12 based off a drawing I made. The outer ledge to keep me from falling off the loft doubled as a bookshelf from the inside and a ledge shelf on top. Instead of a ladder I had stairs that were cubbies that my dad also built. Underneath the bed i kept my drafting table and attached to the "ceiling" of the desk area I had a cubby for papers and artwork with track lighting there too. I had framed corkboard strips on the wall and that same paper cubby area by the track lighting also had magnetic sheets where I kept my metal palette knives. That tiny ass room had 6 outlets that I had my dad install and I was genuinely sad to leave that room when I moved out and got married. Its still set up how it was before I left, just now its my parents storage. I'm glad I grew up in that space though bc it helped my creativity flourish. My current apartment is 1100sq ft and I'm not lacking storage space, its just awkward storage space so the ideas I had as a kid in that bedroom definitely help in my apartment now

    One of the hardest aspects of keeping a home organized is when others don't want to make the effort. This was a point of constant argument between myself and my former roomate when it came to putting the quilts in the ottoman. Not using it? put it away. But the roomate reasoned that using it once a week for movie night was reason enough to leave it out all other 6 days.

      Yes, we all meed to learn to be creative when sharing a space with roommates or spouse etc. , and find creative compromises. Each states their preference, then works to find a compromise each can handle. Maybe even take turns doing it the other's way ( week at a time ?) , if there's no real middle-ground solution. One book which may b an unexpected huge help with this is " The house that cleans itself" . It's super, duper helpful in many ways, one of which being to work with your family and habits as is wise/do-able vrs. always trying to change them. For example, they just never used the other door/area which had the coat etc. storage and the area by door they did use, was always a mess. Rethinking trying to get them all to finally adopt a habit of the other door, which wasn't working, mom and author created storage and seating by the door they used and everything was way better. Just a super helpful book even for we who thought we were good at trouble-shooting.

    Great tips Kallie. Our home is older (1953) and our storage options are awful (the bedroom closet is so small my hubby keeps his clothes in the spare room!). I’ve been using the under bed storage for years and it works great (shoes are perfect for this space) and the label maker is also so useful, especially in the kitchen. Thanks for sharing and I hope you’re enjoying your weekend. 🤗

    Great tips. But I'm jealous of all you people with basements. Since I was 16 I've never lived in a house with a basement. I absolutely love the medicine cabinets with mirrors. In my old house I bought two HUGE ones for the master bathroom sinks. They looked like nice mirrors but had SO MUCH storage in them! And they items are so easy to access.

      i grew up in the houston , tx area, which is at sea level. so i never had a basement. i always thought it would be cool. moved to kansas 20 years ago and got my house with a basement. it ceased being so cool when we had historic rain last spring and my entire basement flooded. we live on a hill, so we never thought it would be a problem. the ground became so saturated that it literally just seeped in thru the walls and floors. all of the sheetrock has to be ripped out. but i did enjoy having it for the few times the tornado sirens go off.

      I got my first basement house 8 years ago. Now in a different house with a basement and I’ve notice that they have such narrow stairs to them. I still am mindful about going down the stairs..
      Similar to the first commenter, my laundry room was on the main floor. I left for the day ( 6 hours) and got a frantic phone call from my 10 yr old daughter after school. Our house was flooded. A pipe in laundry room broke. Guess where all the water goes! Yep. Our basement that was fully furnished and filled with storage items and a watch business. I came home 45 min later, water was turned off to the house, and water was streaming out of the light sockets and wall switches in the stairway. Part of the soaked ceiling fell down all over my stuff.
      I wanted to get rid of clutter, but didn’t want to do it that way! Lol living room, bathroom and daughters bedroom upstairs were the only rooms not needing repair. 3 months we lived in the living room! Ugh
      New house, just last year, we bought a new washer/dryer. They delivered it and hooked it up. Started washer to make sure it worked, but went outside for some reason. He returned to bathroom and he yelled asking for towels. Washing machine was a lemon and again water came through the ceiling in basement soaking an area of carpet underneath. Sigh. I just can’t win. Lol
      So, if you ever get a basement, do not put anything valuable down there. And always have insurance even if you rent. ❤️

      I had some of my grandmother's almost antique furniture, storage and so much other stuff. We were planning to move in with my mother-in-law, so I needed to purge anyway. That made it much easier. I had renters insurance. Paid 20 years for it and never made a claim. Guess what they don't cover.... Flood from ground water. So it was a loss with no reimbursement.

    For the coat hack, you could also get a thing with multiple hooks to hang over doors. That way there's no real installation and you're making use of space you might not have used before.

    I have that same label maker. I used it twice this week in my kitchen. I have made my own recipes dividers for such things as 'home made mixes" & "Crock Pot". The dividers that came with my recipe box didn't have those. Just add decorative paper & your own labels & your done!

    What changed my life was the Ikea-type shelves with storage cubes. I stacked two in our bedroom, so they are about 6 feet high. 16 cubes, I think. I got two colors of fabric cubes that matched our bedroom colors and alternated them. So instead of my tiny vanity, suddenly we had 16 storage spaces, and it really solved a lot of our problems. Now everything has a home, and bedroom clutter has been eliminated. With children and a small home, our bedroom was the dumping ground and it was never company-ready. Not anymore!

    Tips for small spaces (1) Use your verticle space either by using the walls e.g shelves, wall hung cuoboards etc or tall pieces of furniture (maybe even floor to ceiling built ins if poss) (2) buy/thrift furniture that does more than one job. E.g. coffee table that rises to a dining table, benches, footstools or ottomans with built in storage, a desk that you could use as a dining table, sofa bed for guests, ladder desk also be used as shelving with storage (making us of the verticle space) upholstered dining chair used as extra seating or desk chair as well as dining chair (4) fold up furniture or blow up furniture e.g. buttler tray on foldable stand can act as coffee table or even small desk,
    Round tray on foldable stand act as side table, foldable dining chairs (be used inside and out), blow up mattress or even arm chair. (4) avoid small or tall pieces of furiture (unless against your walls in order to make use of that verticle space) (5) turn to youtubers or thise on pintrest who actually live themselves in small spaces not those who don't.

I need to get my strength back. I have 2 or 3 projects that I had just started and then got sick. It’s driving me crazy 😜

    Another tip is to set limits. That is to say figure out the amount of space and par down if needed. I kept trying to fit 5 lbs of stuff in a 3 lb bin. Didn't work. Now my house is getting organized and I feel at peace. Great video!

    2:55. I have a lovely mirror in my dining room, made by a local furniture maker. It’s been at least two years since I’ve been able to clean the glass, because there is so much crap in front of, and around it, I can’t get to it!! We have asked my stepdaughter to clean up her stuff from the dr so often, even offering to help, I’ve lost count. 🤦🏻‍♀️
