  • UN65JS8500 Samsung TV White Spots problem overheating problem, melting problem. Burned/melted Light Diffuser.
    This is a BIG PROBLEM.
    1. To fix this unit, LCD SCREEN needs to be replaced (NOT ECONOMICAL if TV is out of warranty).
    2. Can this unit cause more damage (fire, burn etc).
    3. Does Samsung need to address this issue ASAP?
    4. Does Samsung need to recall this model (and maybe more edge lit models)?
This is a first unit we saw with this damage. We checked some sites and saw many pictures with the same symptoms. I decided to make this video in hope that owners of the same TV model will be aware of this issue. It may effect other JS models with edge lit backlight.
    Please comment below. Thank you

I do tech repairs. I hear people do have fires in homes caused by tvs. this is not acceptable. The thing is it may not be down to second hand goods but down to bad and dangerous manufacturing that also may not test the product to its extreme tolerances! This needs to be put forward for debate with the makers of these products.

Many thanks for posting this. I was wandering around about what this could be. I even called a repair shop but due the size and lack of interest to repair the tv, I was googling and find your post.
Very useful and now I have to consider about buying a new one, in case Samsung does not give me an answer, because it is not worth it to repair as the problem will persist, since it is a design flaw.

Own Samsung UN65js8500 and UN55js8500 built in 2015.The problem is with the 65 inch. Picture in center area became dimmer as time went by. Could not even read the program in the center of the screen. Finally called AAA TV repair and the technician came over to diagnose the problem.
He told me that the set needed a set of LED strips located left and right of the screen.
The strips would cost $200 and the total repair would set me back $400 minus the $75 for his initial vist. I was not sure if I should spend the money to repair, or just purchase a new TV.
Since I paid more than $1400 for the set I decided to fix the set.
A week went by and he finally called to install the LED strips he had ordered.
TV was placed on a blanket face down and he started to disassemble. When he came to the diffuser plate, he said sorry but it is not the LED's but the diffuser plate that needed to be replaced.
Unfortunately this part is no longer available. He re-assembled the TV and left. my expense was the $75 for the initial visit.
After this I got on the phone with Samsung twice and the only thing I got was "sorry the part is no longer available, only thing you can do is purchase a replacement".
I argued that the problem with certain Samsung sets was overheating because the lack of a cooling fan.
He said no, Samsung does not have any overheating problems and offered me a replacement AU8000 , 65" smart, Hi def set for $649 including delivery.
I checked it out and this set sells for that price and less if you shop around.
So to sum it up, it is a waste of time to talk to Samsung. I told my wife that I would not replace the set with another Samsung. This time it would be a Sony or LG from Costco who adds an extra year to the warranty plus a 90 day return policy that no other merchant would give you.

i also have this problem with my UN65JS9000 TV, of course it began after the product was out of warranty and Samsung refused any responsability.Really problematic that Samsung refuses to admit there is an issue with these products, and at this point I refuse to purchase another Samsung product inasmuch as I can avoid it. No TVs, no phones, no memory, nothing. What's worse is that this is a problem caused by the backlight being allowed to supply a voltage that is simply too high for the LEDs, and it CAUSES this issue. Totally unacceptable and I can't believe that a premium product like this is not supported despite a clear manufacturing defect.

  • @frankscarano4708

Back when this model came out the issue was isolated to just a few models doing this.. Now The entire NU line of samsung models use this same kind of backlight system mounted at the bottom and the SAME thing is happening.. 5 generations of models and they STILL overheat and melt the internal light diffuser. Seems Samsung continues to ignore this issue and make these sets the same way... why? cause its cheaper to make them this way, they count on the sets lasting long enough to make the 1 year warranty and thats it. Why do you think a 70" set today costs $600?? This is why! Funny thing is the LED backlighting systems are proving to be THE most unreliable system EVER used in a television in all of it's history. Nothing has proven to have a more widespread problem in such a short period universally over all OEM's. Between them overheating, melting, burning out, and turning blue.. I cannot stress it enough.. the ONLY way to prevent this is to turn down your backlight settings 40% or more.. otherwise it will fail in about 18-24 months

My Samsung TV (UE48JS8500) had the EXACT same problem, only that it is 80% worse condition than shown in this video. The left and right sides of the diffuser are completely black/brown, melted, and full of cracks. The image was barely visible at that point. The LEDs were heating up so much that even the LCD turned black (liquid crystal bleeding) on the sides (After about 5 minutes of operation). When I removed the backlight, Some LEDs are burnt and others emit this dark purplish blue color and heat up a bit too much. When the tv was in operation at its last moments, near the tv the house smelled like burning plastic. It lasted 8 years of about 10 hours use a day though... I believe that this is happening because slowly over use, the LEDs are becoming dimmer, and they act more like a resistor, thus creating additional heat, burning the diffuser (melting and making its edges black) so no longer light passes through the diffuser making the image appear dim. I like the interesting build of the backlight though, since instead of normal white LEDs, they used blue light LEDs (without fluorescent coating) and added a fluorescent layer plastic film on top of the diffuser to convert the blue light to white... Haven't seen that before...

I just wanted to follow up and to say, thank you for posting this video. After over a year and a half of contacting Samsung support to try and seek some sort of resolution, I was finally able to get a one-time accommodation to cover both the parts and labor to repair my TV. Until I found this video I thought that the problem was a few burned out LEDs, not a melted diffuser, and I think that knowing the true cause of the problems with my TV got Samsung to authorize the repair. Honestly, I think they are fully aware of the issues with this series of TV, but will not be forthcoming about it and will deny you service if you seem at all unaware of the underlying cause.
I encourage everyone who is having this problem to not give up contacting Samsung. Make it clear that you understand the problem and insist that they should stand behind their premium products and provide service for a clear manufacturing defect.

I've been reading about Samsungs overheating for a while now and I can't understand why people pay a slight premium for a brand that's known for problems. I paid $250 + $60 (extended warranty) for a Westinghouse that's been fine for 3 years now. Westinghouse TVs have had their problems, but even if this dies after the 5 year warranty, I won't have lost much. In all fairness, I keep the brightness below even the "economy" setting, so it leads a fairly easy life.

I had 2 Samsung UN55MU8000 tv's and the first one went in for warranty right after usage for about 10-20 minutes right out the box due to the backlight which at default setting sits at 14 which runs too hot and smelt like melting plastic and the bottom of the screen had huge white spots at the bottom which is why i took it in, I did have warranty coverage and the the TV Repairman told me to always have the backlight at 10 or lower so it doesn't cause any damage to the TV or worse a house fire, which baffled me seeing how damn Samsung don't tell their customers to set their backlights low right out of the box!

I worked for Samsung for a while and believe this issue is caused by TV manufacturers competing constantly to offer the most bright and vivid sets, to make them stand out on the shop floor and in reviews. The LEDs are over-driven beyond the heat dissipation abilities of the TV to achieve the brightest possible image, resulting in diffuser damage. If you enable 'eco mode' or turn the backlight and brightness down, you will likely enjoy a much longer service life. Only use the set in a very bright mode for a short period of time for special occasions, and then allow the set to cool. I don't agree with electronics being designed in this way, but consumer hunger for brighter, bigger and cheaper TVs is causing manufacturers to cut corners.

LG edge lit back-lights do the same thing, I recently opened one up and it literally caught fire on the inside and burned the light filters, black soot and smoke damage everywhere on the inside. I had to back out of the repair due to the picture still looking crappy after a new back-light was installed.

Not always*, but when the tv is carried and someone squeezes the side too hard it presses the diffuser against the side LED. The plastic then gets too hot and starts to melt. I repair tvs and has someone bring me a 55" SUHD with this same issue after they moved. Personally I like back light TVs better.

This is really bad and I can’t believe it’s not recalled by Samsung yet. I have this same tv model and experiencing identical white light burning through the sides of the display. The sides of the TV set get so hot that it’s untouchable. I’ve contacted Samsung and they have not been able to resolve this issue due to warranty expiring. Hopefully they can replace this as it’s a hazard

0:09 I can't believe a TV made in 2018 uses up to 255 watts. I have a Westinghouse $250 special from 2015 and it (at 48") maxes out at 120 watts, but I keep it on a much dimmer setting, not only because it will last longer, but because the "showroom" setting would burn my eyes out. When I was a kid, our neighbor's TV burned a couple of holes through the top of its wooden cabinet, partly because color TVs of that era (with the round-dot shadow mask) were very inefficient and generated more heat than light. Even the plasma sets of 15 year ago used 4 or 5 hundred watts, and came with warnings to keep them away from flammable ceilings. But with the efficiency of LEDs, and the fact that today's sets are packed into a 3/4" thick package, it's hard to believe that Samsung would see fit to try to put that much power through this thing.

I agreed the technician visited at my home and without opening the panel he said panel have to replace then problem will solved and Rs17000/- cost for panel. I pledged today not to buy samsung products in future and also said to all don't buy samsung products.

Just had our Samsung getting hot on one corner. Called Samsung. They want to send a Tech out to take a look at the TV for $200 plus any cost of parts needed. If they find the TV to be defective then they would cover the cost of the Tech visit... But we all know that they will find a way to say it is not a defect. Better off going to buy a new TV.

No, we did not. You can't buy "Light diffuser" separate from the panel. To replace panel, - it is not worth it.
With this kind of problem, in our opinion, Samsung needs to recall this model and/or provide repair at no charge.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the video
Here the main question is if this damage is due to overheating and if the edges are overheating and what's the root cause of such overheat

    • @PaulsTVCo
      @PaulsTVCo  6 лет назад +2

It is a great question. It is defiantly overheating. If customer using Dynamic Mode, TV gets way too hot. Now the questions are: Is it too much light from the backlight or diffuser is cheaply made?

My Samsung LCD TV too, Model: UA37D5000PR from Philippines Me, it's about BACKLIGHT's LEDs OVERHEATING or OVER-VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY that has a Normal VOLTAGE of 268 Vdc with respect to GROUND and when Series-In-Circuit it Drops to 184 Volts DC from first terminal and 95 Volts DC to succeeding voltage drop series STRIPS of LEDs! @ first I was shocked to have a fluctuating DC Source for the LEDs Strips both from Left and Right, but the Left SIde was BURNT-OUT at some point while using my LCD TV for a year and a half! SAD to NOTE why such SAMSUNG TECHNOLOGY BACKLIGHTS is OverHeating by some Over-Voltages or defective components of the Power Supply Board Assembly!
The LEDs in the STRIPS of LEDs is OverHeating Due to some LASER-LIKE or High-Intensity Concentrations of LIGHTS FOCUS that causes Burns on the Sides of the PANEL PLASTICs GLASS-LIKE.... The LEDs of the Backlights is dangerous while Operating at an ABNORMAL TEMPERATURES and that/it will cause BURNS/MELTDOWNS/HEATING of nearby objects that hit it by the LED Lights concentrating for a long periods of time like watching movies and playing GAMES for Hours! SAD!
