- In this video I attempt to repair my television, however after the repair the same problem happened again. And if you're wondering, it ran for about 8 minutes after the repair. It's a LG 42LV3550

Well looks like you invented the first television with a fog machine
haha yes
actually nope because back in 2012 we had a tv that exploded and all that came out was fog/steam.. well at the time all i saw was fog/steam coming out of the tv.. it was really scary
Looks like a ghost coming out of the TV.
These videos are always entertaining to watch! It kinda reminds me of a time back in 2006 when my dad was playing on his xbox 360 and the CRT that he had since 1994 had just imploded out of nowhere. Luckily nobody was injured apart for my eardrums. To this day ive been fascinated with CRTS tvs and electronics ever since that incident. If i can recall i think the CRT was a sony trinitron (i cant recall the model of trinitron).
Same thing happened with my LG TV. Scary. Decided to junk it, thanks for confirming my decision.
yep that's what I ended up doing too
AHHH MAAAANNNN!!!, that quote is worth the price of admission right there.
I know right. We didn't think anything of it until some people have pointed out that it was kind of funny.
Title should be how to make a smoke bomb from a tv
Thank you for posting this. My 7 yr old Dynex tv did this last night...Completely scared me!
sure no problem. I'm surprised how many people say that the same thing happened to them.
and thanks for watching!
The mistake you made was getting the capacitors off of Ebay from a Chinese seller. These capacitors are absolutely trash & more often then not, are mis-lableled & sometimes the polarity stripe is pointing to the positive lead.
You've should have ordered the capacitors from reputable electronics distributors like Digikey or Mouser electronics.
This is awesome.
Thanks for posting.
It's killing me that people are saying you installed them the wrong way........they blew the originals and they blew replacements (installed correctly!!!!) Obviously it is something else which is causing the capacitors to blow.
It looks fun, simple and inexpensive so I am going to try to replace mine which just blew. We'll see if it works or if there is a deeper root issue.
let me know how it goes, hope it works.
I'm kind of hoping it doesn't work :) That pop and smoke thing was pretty cool..........and I wasn't home when it happened so I kind of want to see it live. I showed my wife your video and she said it was identical to what happened to ours.
@@holdemNE1 👏👏👏
Cool but sad. thanks for sharing!!
yeah it's a bummer but what can ya do.
3:02 3D effect and fog
nothing's wrong its just one of those new INTELLISENSE TM tvs that does enviromental effects like you have in the 4d movie theatre lol just joking but that is one busted tv!!
Thanks for your video! I found a burned capacitor in my tv (a smaller one), but decided against trying to fix it based on your video. The problem is probably upstream from the capacitor and I don’t have enough knowledge or time to look into it. You saved me a weekend afternoon!
haha no problem man.
@@BruceChastainthank you so much for hearting my comment you really made my day im five month’s pregnant and being abused and you made my day tysm for hearting my comments
@@WasherFreak17 are you okay
@@wbaba34 no
@@WasherFreak17 ok well I’m going to test my broken tv, if I don’t reply, I probably exploded along with my tv
Capacitors installed backwards. That is what they do when they are connected reverse polarity, they blow up like that.
Ryan Toomey They were installed in the right "direction"
The power supply probably gives them to much voltage.
@@NinoJoel after recheck at full resolution i see the positive side mark on the board these cap are correctly installed 2:01
If you look at the video closely it appears he connected them correctly
Pretty :-; hope it got fixed
It happened to me today, first the screen wasn't working and now it blew up
LOL that's a quality repair that man.
Thanks
saw a bug crawl out from the bottom right after the first pop,& girl says damn maybe you were bugged
Bummer! Awesome to see the TV smoking, but totally a bummer.
I've been trying to get it to stop smoking but he won't listen :)
My first thought would be it's an LG 😢
Ur destined for doooooom!
I thought LG was good! But my Samsung has lasted about 15 years now.
The capacitors aren't always the issue.
In this case, these capacitors might have been given too much voltage by a faulty PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit. I'm guessing you might have moved on from this now, but if you still have it, check the resistors in the PFC voltage feedback circuit. (Might be too difficult to figure out which ones are which if you aren't familiar with repairing these things. The resistors are likely around the area seen at 2:07 on the bottom right of the screen. They're small, lol ... Otherwise, just buy a new power board. When in operation, there may be up to around 400 volts on those capacitors, so be warned!)
Researching online, it looks like you aren't the only one with this problem.
Good try on repairing it though. I repaired our old Samsung plasma TV twice - once it had a faulty solder connection that caused a power transistor to fail, and the second time because a capacitor went bad. (It was a "CapXon" branded capacitor, well known to not have long lives...)
Both times, the TV was having power problems with not turning on properly.
Or they were installed backwards.
Ryan Toomey they where not
Nino Joel (:
The same thing happened to mine the other day. And I quickly unplugged it
Wtf mine just did the same thing, it shut off and then sparks were just shooting out the back of it and I unplugged it so quickly
wow seems to be a very common issue.
Same
yes, I think that here the cause capacitors to burn, is not in capacitors, unless they were connected with another polarity. I think you should look at an earlier stage of the circuit, keeping it disconnected from the rest, datasheet in hand, starting with the power supply. Remember to check if it actually delivers direct current, not only the correct voltage, perhaps a diode bridge may be the cause. But I venture to guess. Lucky friend !
Hi Daniel, I'm not sure, I'll take it apart and take a look again but I don't think I'll have success.
Dude I recently reconnected my second moniter (an old tv) was watching a podcast and kept hearing some crackling thinking it was my fridge, then put my headphones back on and figured it was the podcast audio. Noticed later it was the tv and felt the power bar and ports on the back and they were all super hot
hi sir,my lg tv power cable sparkls went i enter it in the power source and it doesnt open....lg tv sometimes opens and not its a weird tv but this late issue made me i think it will explode or something? i nearly saw smoke when i connected her
I could imagine one of the family members walking in and said: ''Bruce, why is the TV smoking?!''
My son and I were playing NBA2K tonight and my guys were on fire from 3 pt land and my TV popped and hissed and then we saw smoke rolling out. Crazy! We didn’t know what was going on but I was ready to throw that TV out through the window if I saw it on fire. Never seen this happen before.
If it's the same 3 capacitors, one possibility it that you put them in backward; the positive and negative markings are sometime a bit confusing. The only other possibilities I can picture are too much DC voltage or more AC noise than they can safely absorb. Since they are probably there to "short out" the AC noise while storing up the DC, a power supply that is cycling improperly might be enough to eventually destroy them, though I'd expect it to take a while. The power supply is also supposed to regulate the DC voltage to which they get charged and if the regulation circuit has gone off, that could be too high, but even that would likely take out other parts if it were high enough to blow them that fast. One other unlikely possibility it that the ones you ordered might simply have been defective; you might want to try charging a spare one to its rated voltage with a battery and see if it blows up.
Well he could of possibly put them in right because after all the first ones blowed up so it could have been a factory defect or something else gone wrong? But at this point we don't know though what you said made sense too!
And once again was it hooked up to a good surge protector? He might have had a spike in electricity levels. A good surge protector would've helped. I tell you though I believe a lot of this made in China 🇨🇳 is garbage. 🗑 We need to get back to building good quality stuff in the USA 🇺🇸. When appliances would last. 20 to 30 years. When a Ford & Chevy would last 20 year's. I'm so sick of this garbage and dangerous appliances, little appliances, & crap they send over here that don't last.
Think what happening to mine has odd smell from it got it in 2018 and the Horizontal lines showed up
TCL.ROKU 32" 720p it was cheap maybe the motherboard having a failure or power supply or chip
exactly the same has happened to mine, exact same tv, wish i could sen pics on here, actually got my page ill upload a vid
Same happened to me today
hope you video goes viral to help pay for the new TV😢
haha, it's alright we got a new one yesterday.
bigger hopefully..lol!
Holy Smokes!

Holy smokes means smoke all over the TV
"its not so bad" BOOM
my vizio did the same thing last night, exactly
You fix it?
You gotta watch out with these old televisions from the mid 90’s to the mid 2000’s.
The capacitor plague touched us all
seems to be a common issues.
My Samsung TV has just blown up I heard a loud cracking noise then it started smoking took it apart and some of the resisters have gone black but it is about 8 years old from being second hand so I'm saving up to buy a new one
Mine is 2 years old . And I can't afford a new one
😭😢 I can't afford a new one😭😭😭😭
2:56 anybody ain't gonna talk about that bug? 🤣🤤
haha good eye! it was a fly, we had a problem with flies in that house because it was near a farm, finally I installed some windows screens and that fixed the issue.
@@BruceChastain ok😁
I know this video is old but I figured I'd still share my thoughts. It almost seems like an overvolting issue as in there's too much power in it. From the looks of it I think that's a plasma TV you have and they run at super high wattages and AMPS and a lot of plasma TV power supplies are prone to failure so maybe some type of regulator failed and it's dumping too much power into those caps. Also plasma TV's run really hot so it might of been an overheating issue where it put too much heat and stress on those caps. this seems like a later model that's been cheaped out like all electronics nowadays hence why there's no cooling fans and some argue that there's no need for them but all plasma TV's should have fans. I had a panasonic plasma and the power supply fan got jammed and it caused the power supply to overheat and melt the transformer and a couple coils so I bought a new power supply off ebay for $60 and it still works to this day. Pricey sure but it beats buying a whole new TV that'll just break in a couple years. Still very unfortunate that it happened but that's how tech is. Not built to last
same thing happend to mine. just leave the cappacitors and hammer the relleys i tink they get stuck when u have hummidity. after mine works fine whith hanent repleacing cappacitors....
My tv TCL.ROKU 32" 720p has blue line across the screen im gonna upgrade it 😊
Im currently using a montier as a backup

The same thing happened to my LG TV. Never had this problem with Samsung or Sony. Just ordered a new 4K Android Sony TV
I have like a 15 year old Samsung, still going strong.
@@BruceChastain I have 10 years old LG led tv and its running fine... It can happen in every brand not only in LG.
My girlfriend has a Samsung TV and it just exploded today and it's just less than 2 years old. Do you think the TV can be repaired if we take it to a professional?
Better call the firefighters! I hope you get a new TV
The same thing just happened to my TV

seems to be very common by the number of people saying the same thing you.
It so funny , it’s just happened to me now with the same TV
Well as you can see I have no idea how to fix it :)
Bruce Chastain same Tv ! I have it with me for 6 years or so already! Wanted to open it and see what’s wrong but After watching your video I just trashed it hahaha 😂😂thanks
Something like that would depend on the age of the tv for me to fix it myself I’m the same as you I know little but enough to maybe fix it myself our living room tv finally went it won’t turn on for whatever reason bunch of clicking sounds but won’t run being the tv is 12 years old and is a 720 p hd tv I decided instead of fixing it I should just be happy it lasted 12 years and just buy a new one picked up a 40 inch sharp for just 170 dollars at Walmart can’t beat that
yeah these days 12 years is good for a TV. I wish it were like the old days when you expect stuff like that to last 20+ years, but with how quickly technology changes and how cheap electronics are produced, it really doesn't make sense anymore.
@@BruceChastain I've gotten 24 years and 37 years out of my CRT TVs, and the sets I remember from when I was a kid could be kept running indefinitely as long as you could get the parts. But before the late 1970s, few sets would go more than a year without a repair and I don't remember many people seeing fit to keep one running more than 10 or 15 years; the repair guys would declare them not worth fixing even if the repair was simple. And, a replacement picture tube in the 1970s cost more than a new flat screen TV costs now.
It could be with the power amplifier
Can you help in telling will my led be fine . Or not .coz I am afraid it it has gone out of order
sorry I have no idea! :)
@@BruceChastain it's ok

And when I opened it up
The transistor was blown so badly that it was broken in pieces
Once it happened before and the capacitor was blown
You can replace with another capacitor or transistor and can do factory reset to get it fixed
thanks for watching, check on the comments, there was a lot of good feedback in there.
That exact same thing just happened to me rn to my brothers tv. It’s kinda my fault for being dumb. It rained pretty hard where I live and some of the light weren’t working but some plugs in the walls still worked. There is one by close to his tv. I got a new extension cord so it could reach I connected his tv after a few seconds I just heard a loud popped. I was like wth is that then I heard it again and seen his tv smoking. I got so scared, my heart was beating like crazy I thought a fire was about to start. Nothing has happened for like 20 minutes rn. I think everything is good.just a bit bummed out and kinda scared to remove any of the stuff right there rn.
good luck, sounds like you need a new TV set
@@BruceChastain everything is good now, I have an old tv laying around so just hooked that up for him
Oh My Gosh The TV Just Exploded
yeah seems to be a big problem
That tv is SMOKIN!
sure was
Yeah, that was definitely the sound of electrolytic capacitors blowing up. The root cause could be bad MOSFETS letting too much current flow through the capacitors, or bad resistors, or even the transformers. Transformers over time and heat can burn the installation off of the secondary coils which could also result in this. So, obviously, the capacitors are not the root cause or they wouldn’t have blown up so quickly. I would test the transformers before testing the MOSFETs, however. Because the transformers will burn off their installation before a transistor or mosfet will go..
I have this same model tv myself. It gets really hot and now I’m starting to have malfunctions like lines across the screen or flashing. I just turn it off for awhile and it kinda goes back to normal till it gets hot again.
well I gave up on mine many years ago now.
it's an experience?
My Hi-sense Roku tv just smoked for the second time and am worried if it won't work again 🥺🥺, any help or recommendations on what to do?

the psu circuit was probably running overvoltage for some reason...
could even be that the replacement caps were bad, even 'fakes'?? looking closely at the video in stop motion, they look wired correctly, of the correct voltage, so should've been ok??
A polarised capacitor installed backwards is a big no-no.

maybe the capacitor like mine?
@@BruceChastain could be cause the left side was the one that was smoking. I have another one but ill get a Sony tv

That's what happens when you reverse polarity capacitors. Installed reverse.
I recommend to not have plasma TVs in generally. They cost more to run than a LED TV, can explode as you kindly demonstrated and are really heavy. Just buy LED TVs.
That wasn't a Plasma TV that was a LED tv
My vizio tv just did this today i woke up to the smoke alarm and nothing was on fire but then the tv went SPHHHH and it smoked a bunch and all the lights started turning off

What happened then?
It happened to me while watching this……
Nobody was home but someone left the tv on rest mode we got home and heard a pop noise but I asked myself if the tv exploded wouldnt the hdmi cords have been burnt
so many people are telling me about their TVs have had these types of issues.
You are definitely having a power supply problem or a current draw problem. The voltage regulation system or the transformer itself has failed to set the proper voltage or you have a high current draw from the capacitor bank. The correct step to take before replacing the capacitors would have been to take a DVM and read the circuit voltage at the input side across the first capacitor. I do believe they were inn parallel so you probably could have red across any of them. If the voltage was of a correct value (AC), you most likely have a short circuit causing the hi current draw, that why they all popped one after the other.
Capacitors only do two things. They store energy (voltage) and they discharge that energy. They sort of act as a regulator along with resistors and coils (inductors). My best guess is that there was a short on the board and too much current was passed through the capacitors, over heating them in quick fashion. Your safest bet is to replace the entire board. Some may disagree and tell you to find the short and repair it but in all honesty, unless you are a true circuit component expert in assembly and testing, you don’t really know how many components have been weakened by the hi voltage / hi current condition on the board. I would replace the board and go back to watching tv.
thanks Michael, seems like the best info feedback I've seen on this video.
That's what mine just did
sorry to heart that. Seems like a common problem.
