I am 80 years old and have been very active most of my life. I fell hit my head and got a brain bleed. I spend almost a month in the hospital. Started watching wood turning. I watched all the guys with glueing things together and forming with epoxy but no interest. I just love watching your videos. It is like you are talking to me as a friend and you let the piece dictate the end product. Thank you for providing a very interesting product.
We are friends, Douglas and as your friend, I'm glad to know you are feeling a little better. That must have been scary. At 75, I can just imagine what an impact that had on you. Take good care and thank your for your comment! 😄
When you laughed and said 'who else would do this?' The answer is very few. But that's why I enjoy your channel so much, you do stuff other people don't and it's always a pleasure to watch you create beautiful objects.
That was a good question, Phil. Who else would turn that? Not many, I’m sure. But not many have your talent, my friend. Another excellent piece in the Anderson household. Thanks for sharing! Take care, …..Gord
Haha, thanks, buddy! Fortunately, we have a group of turners not nearly as dumb as me. LOL! I was happy when I took it out of the jaws and it held together. 😄
Hi Mr. Anderson Just started to watch your videos as I have just started turning myself. Liked and subscribed. Watched your video where you said you had part of lung removed and were going to start chemo, your still putting out videos so presume all went well. Lost my wife 6 years ago to cancer so wish you successful treatment of yours. I am picking up all kinds of hints to help me so keep making shavings. Bob
Thank you for your subscription, Bob, I will try to be worthy. I am fully recovered. Four years since I lost my wife so I know what you have gone through. Good to know you are keeping busy and enjoying your turning, keep at it! 😄
"Fearless Phil" strikes again .....I was on the edge of may chair watching you turn this......brave but worth it ...nice work Phil I am in awe of your talent......thanks for sharing.
It blows my mind that you can take a piece of wood that looks like something you would put in your fireplace or fire pit and turn it into something of a piece of art!👏Nice work! 👍😊💖
Well, you said it yourself, Phil; "Who else would turn this?" - only the Master himself! We can rely on you to be 'Mr Natural' and once again you deliver an amazing masterclass of what can be done, and an amazing bowl once it has been done! Great job, great video.
Phil. :Once again you have mastered a piece of wood that would be junk to 90% of turners you master it. I’m glad and look forward to watching your videos daily. THANKS for your time and work
Have you ever considered wrapping the outside with blue painters tape for stability? I do it for piece of mind. I was gritting my teeth a couple times during the video. Glad it came out well. Mask and face shield on!!!!!
As I was telling Doug in another comment, I just don't think of things like that, Ken. I'm thinking about camera angles, lighting and editing. I'm glad it worked out, too! 😄
Most of my turns are like yours. I’m retired and belong to a shop called the Sawmill. Lots. Of great people. I’m known for rescuing wood from the dumpster. I also get wood from other turners with the comment that it looks like a Dave piece. I really appreciate you videos. Dave from Surprise Arizona.
Thank you Nate. Thank you Phil “the Bark Man” Anderson. No “Flying Wood” t-shirt for you this time! Great seat of pants, suspense video. Next time you get that soft punky wood like that, brush on sanding sealer, then continue turning. It does a great job of stiffening the fibers without filling up the voids. It will save you from a whole ton of extra sanding.
Yeah, I wish I could think of stuff like that during the filming of the video, Valerie. Mostly I'm thinking of camera angles and lighting, editing, stuff like that. Sometimes I think about turning, too! 😄
As Captain Kirk may have said, these are the voyages of the shady acres woodshop seeking out crazy wood to boldly go where no man has gone before. 😂 Another great piece Phil.
For 24 minutes I held my breath as I was sure it was going to pop in half. You have put a lot of time into this bowl with all the glue jobs you did on this piece. But at the end of all this the product is sensational. I really like this bowl. Thanks for the show. Joel
You are the only person I know that would attempt this piece. It is a very beautiful piece of art. The wood grain is amazing and I'm so glad you were able to save the bark.
Phil only thing I can add to this video is you show to your viewers what's determination and patience and god-given talent you can do with wood. God Bless you Phil...
Phil. I think all your hard work on this really paid off - well worth the effort! Now I think you deserve a round of applause and at least a dozen beers, you probably need it!
Phil, you did a fantastic job with this piece of firewood 🪵 Well done, you 👏🏻 I love it, there is a great deal of beauty in something cracked and scarred, all it takes is handling with love, and the beauty will shine, as you have well demonstrated ☺️👍🏻 Thank you, Phil, I would call this the Dolly Parton bowl… Nooooo, not because of what you are thinking now 🫣😳 because it makes me think of her song “bargain store” 😉😂 Have a great weekend, Phil ☀️
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for NOT using resin. There are very good artists creating masterpieces with resin, but you take so much care in preserving the beauty and character of the natural wood! Thank you!
Well Phil you've amazed me again!!! I just knew that large crack would cause the piece to blow apart!!! Instead you turned it into a magnificent art piece. You're a very talented man. Take care of yourself and have a great weekend. 🥰♥️
"Maybe not your change." LOL!! Great work, and great effort to save the bark. Thanks. Like Douglas McCart says, your work is definitely different than all the others who remove bark and use epoxy.
Only you the bark master could do that. I didn't realize how much sanding you got to do until I turned my first bowl. Turning it was easier Thanks Phil!!!! God bless
Ooo, Maestro, this was a nail biter... I was expecting there to be a bit of a dramatic conclusion. Well held together, and fantastic work, as always. Mother nature really made you work for this one, sir. Jay
Really neat! I love when you do a "daredevil project". Keeps us on the edge of our seats. Also your joke about using a painting as a charcuterie board really cracked me up.
Ok so here is my problem……..I don’t know which one is my favorite!!!! I love them all, but this it at the top of the list ❤. Beautiful, I love the imperfections that you turned into a beautiful piece. Love this ❤
That was an epic turning job Phil, I never knew that I could hold my breath for 20 minutes 😂, I love the comment from Douglas, so very true, hope he is feeling better you are good therapy when needed. Great result the bowl looks fantastic. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Hi Phil, That is indeed beautiful. I have found one thing out this morning and that is I can't drink my tea while holding my breath. LOL. That is an amazing piece of turning which I believe not many people would have even started to do let alone get such a wonderful piece at the end. Fantastic Phil. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Phil I'm very glad you always work with a net, in the form of a face shield...truly. First it was the dust storm, then the bark was lifting and threatening to come off, then the crack got messy on that one side, and then you had an iffy tenon, but you kept persevering...as you do. I might have spit it at the crack...I don't know. I know how important the bark is to you so I get why you kept fixing it, but it's Plum and even without the bark it's beautiful wood with great grain patterns. At any rate Phil, I'm VERY happy to hear you so clearly say that it is ART. That's a big step for you and I want to honor it. Yes Phil, you make Art! :-D
Phil, how you approach each turning truly amazes me. You take the outcasts of others and tun then into AMAZING pieces of art that can be used for decoration or..... M&Ms. You are a truly blessed and talented person. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and uncanny ability to turn cracked, punky, and often times discarded wood into masterpieces.
@Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop Not quite yet, but I'm looking forward to it. should be done with all these projects soon, and then I can get back at it. 😁Thank you for sharing your talent with us my friend.
You have taken an UGLY DUCKEN of the wood world and found the SWAN in it. Only you have this talent!! I know you have probably been asked this a thousand times or more but indulge me. What made you turn to this avenue of woodturning? How long have you been turning wood? Such a GREAT creation!! 3/23/23 4:43 PST
Thank you, Colleen! Well, it's a funny story. I've been a woodworker for more than 50 years. Once I retired and had more time for the shop, I found myself freezing cold in the winter. I still wanted to be out there so, I figured if I stood in one place and pointed a little heater at me, I'd be OK. So, I became a turner! 😄 I've been turning seriously for about five years.
Hi 👋, PHIL FROM PHIL, I hope you are keeping safe and well, Well perseverance paid off. It looks amazing, another piece of artwork to your collection., I think that I might said a few months ago that I have got some peach 🍑 logs 🪵, some of it is quite big as it was a very old tree, the centre is rotted out, so not sure yet whether I’m gonna attempt to do some resin or I’m going to try and turn without doing it, Great territorial , it looks like you’ve got a new a message from someone who likes headbanging, 😮 not very good at our age I hope he’s well, And he is fully recovered, and he’s gonna take up wood turning , stay safe look forward to your next project, ARTWORK, 😅 PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop , Hi 👋 Phil, I’ve managed to do a little bit of wood turning today, just to find just before I finished it on the outer rim had got some splits in it. Next thing I knew part of it was flying off., at least it get me a little bit of practice. Going back to getting injury, In 1994/5 around that time, I was deep-ping some walnut to make some matched panels, the piece of wood that I was cutting on the sore bench came up off the blade, dropped back onto the blade and came back and hit me, I then spent the next three days in hospital not knowing what damage I done to my internals. To say my body was black was a understatement, I ended up, having to sell everything off in my workshop, and I could not work for around about thee months and then I struggled after that, I ended up doing subcontract work for a organ building company. I’ve got myself back on my feet so late I surely, not sure whether I have said, but in 2019 I ended up, leaving my partner and coming across to France, And at the moment, I’ve still got a court case going on , as I have been well and truly scammed by her. I shouldn’t have to be going through this at my age or any age at that matter., Anyway, I better stop there. Keep up the great work stay safe, I look forward to your next piece of art been created. Kind regards Phil from the moulin,
Just wanted to thank you Phil for the great videos. Been watching them for a while and find you very funny and informative. Your camera work is excellent, I like being able to see how you hold and turn the tools. I'm an almost 55 year old new wood turner who has turned a few pens and bowl blanks the last couple months and I hope to do some live edge turning once I recover from this herniated disc that has about crippled me. For the last week I've been sitting around watching turning videos and other wood working stuff on RUclips. I'm bored too tears and really want to get back to turning. Thanks again. Jim S Utah
Phil, you have a lot of determination to keep gluing the bark back on. As usual you took a questionable piece of wood and turned it into a masterpiece.
Thanks Phil for your efforts and sharing your experiences with these difficult pieces of wood. I was wondering if a different glue would have worked better to keep the bark on rather than the CA glue?
Well, the CA did work, John. Yes, I think wood glue would have been the best choice but when I'm shooting a video I just don't have the time for it to cure. 😄
It is indeed art, and wonderfully beautiful art. Phil, how great to see you back to making art! That's been your life for years now. We can all see and appreciate how much joy it gives you. That's why we like to watch. Thank you for sharing the beauty.
Boy, I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the wood was going to break apart! Another wood turner would have poured epoxy all over that piece of wood and ruined its natural beauty. Thank you for letting us watch you create another beautiful piece of art, Phil.
Howdie High there Phil Darrell Pizzagoni from Redding here Wowie Zowie !! Shear talent Mind the Phun Amazing how you helped maintain the integrity of that piece So I received a beautiful piece of pear that I will turn this weekend. Large enough to get two projects One natural edge One regular First experience with plum So excited As usual you're my HERO Phil
I knew the bark was going to be an issue, Lewis. I didn't really know the extent of the crack until I got into it. But, time invested, ya know, so I pressed on! 😄
Wow, that lacy grain was worth fighting for, I think. I'm glad you don't use resin because I like seeing the wood with all its character shining through. It really is a wonderful form of artistic expression. Thank you, Phil 👏🏻
Well Phil, I would have carried on!! Honest to goodness, when I get a piece like that I always think to myself "what would Phil do?" I've said it a few times before, but you have changed the way I look at wood. A lot of the things I turn today likely would have been in a burn pile. This time though you had a real challenge!! Of course you carried on and made an exceptional piece of art. Plum at best is a cracky test, but spalted as well.......Hmmmm! Thank you. Cheers, Rick
Wow! I was holding my breath along the way on this one with the loose bark and that incredibly large crack! Another beautiful piece Phil, well and truly a beautiful piece. 💖
Nicely done your skill was showing. I laugh every when you say " its' in the book". Based upon your turnings your books and storage must be amazing. Take care guy!!
Another hit out of the park, Phil. It's always a pleasure seeing your work. I always look forward to seeing what you post on your next video. Blessings.
That is beautiful Phil! No epoxy needed. I really like epoxy pieces but it would absolutely ruin the natural beauty of what you do. Your stuff is on whole different level. And very much appreciated.
Wow, Phil, that turned out beautifully! Your respect for the natural beauty of the wood is so gratifying. There are times when the fillers are appropriate, for sure, but your affinity for turning the wood as it comes to you sets you apart from so many of the rest of us. Thanks!
I'm early tonight! Well I must say mr Anderson, I would have conceded defeat to the lump of wood even before it got to the lathe. You however have pulled something quite remarkable out of the proverbial hat once again. That looked extremely challenging, but as you quite rightly say, it turned out beautiful! (in the hands of an expert). Jane ❤
Well done, Phil. I'm amazed it held together. Oh, and by the way, I endorse what you said about resin; too much plastic in the world, today, and no shortage of amazing wood, especially with friends like you have.
Thank you, Don! Yes, I have the best, most generous viewers and I think we all benefit from them. Just think of the variety I've been able to show my audience. I'm amazed every day! 😄
That is amazing! I’ve been turning a piece of Oak today, a few bug holes and a couple of fine cracks and I worried about those! Then I come in and see this! Wow!! Dunno what I was worried about🤪😉👍🏻
Wow I can finally breath. I think I held my breath for most of that video Phil waiting for it to go flying. But I sort of knew it wasn't going to. Lots of work but well worth it. I would say it came out perfect. Very impressive turning and a great finish. Great job my friend, Gary
Once I got it into the chuck I felt pretty good about the jaws holding it together. I was fearful taking it out of the chuck and pleasantly surprised it stayed in one piece. I was holding my breath, too! LOL! Thanks, buddy, your turn! 😄
🌷🐰Happpppppy Spring, Phil!🤎💛💚🌷 Beautiful bowl Looks like a hoof. Still lots of snow here. We can still go out on the ice of the lake, as nights are still below freezing.
Phil, you are a true artist! I would have passed on that or cut it through the Crack. I'm a chicken my friend. I've had pieces fly off the lathe numerous times. I don't understand turners who do not use a face shield. That and my mask are the first things I put on when I turn I am so glad you stress that in each and every video. Have a great weekend dear.
I like chicken, Jane! LOL! I've had my share of flying pieces, too. Just be sure to stay out of the line of fire. I'm glad you are safety conscious, my friend. I will, you have a good weekend, too! 😄
Well that turned out great. Just before sanding the inside you stated "I'm wondering who else would do this, and then put it out for everyone to see." Regardless of who else, it's because you do put it out for all to see that is one of the main reasons I continue watching your channel. I so thoroughly enjoy your tips and explanation of your work, and of course, I enjoy the end pieces. Kudos to you sir, and I hope you continue for everyone's enjoyment.

To say my body was black was a understatement, I ended up, having to sell everything off in my workshop, and I could not work for around about thee months and then I struggled after that, I ended up doing subcontract work for a organ building company. I’ve got myself back on my feet so late I surely, not sure whether I have said, but in 2019 I ended up, leaving my partner and coming across to France,
And at the moment, I’ve still got a court case going on , as I have been well and truly scammed by her. I shouldn’t have to be going through this at my age or any age at that matter., Anyway, I better stop there. Keep up the great work stay safe, I look forward to your next piece of art been created.
Kind regards Phil from the moulin,
Yes! It is a very beautiful usable bowl. Keep on turning!!!!!
Thank you, I will, Dianne! 😄

Oh yeah, those hurt, Jim! Quick healing and back to the shop wishes for you! 😄
That bark had very little holding it on. WOW! Beautiful.
True enough, Lyle! 😄
Such a great piece!!! So glad it stayed together for you!!!👍🙂
Thanks, Ron, me too! 😄
Phil, you have a lot of determination to keep gluing the bark back on. As usual you took a questionable piece of wood and turned it into a masterpiece.
Thank you, Kevin! 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop monk.
That was amazing. I kept my fingers crossed. I thought it was going to fly away at any moment. Hurray!❤
Haha, we got lucky, Vickie! 😄
I agree what others have said Phil, this was a risky piece but well worth it just to show how it grew. Soup is off the menu again😊
No soup for you! LOL! Thank you, Jeff! 😄
That took a crazy amount of patience and dedication. 👏
Thank you, John! 😄
Wow; outstanding... This is why I look forward to Friday mornings. Thank you Phil.
Thanks for watching, Andrew! 😄
It is indeed art, and wonderfully beautiful art. Phil, how great to see you back to making art! That's been your life for years now. We can all see and appreciate how much joy it gives you. That's why we like to watch. Thank you for sharing the beauty.
Thank you very much, Dick! 😄
Wow. I wasn't sure that was going to hold for you. Glad it did. Turned out beautifully.
Thank you, Laura! 😄
Boy, I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the wood was going to break apart! Another wood turner would have poured epoxy all over that piece of wood and ruined its natural beauty. Thank you for letting us watch you create another beautiful piece of art, Phil.
I really appreciate this, Janet, thank you so much! 😄
Howdy Phil! It's another beauty! 👍👍 So glad you were able to save the bark.
Thanks, R G! 😄
Mr McCart get well soon.
Phil your a crazy man but always come through with fantastic bowls.
Haha, crazy? Yeah, maybe a little or maybe I just feel like I've lived a good long life! 😄
She's a beauty bowl for sure. Thanks for saving the bark too. Sincerely,
Thank you, Ms Bee! 😄
Howdie High there Phil
Darrell Pizzagoni from Redding here
Wowie Zowie !!
Shear talent
Mind the Phun
Amazing how you helped maintain the integrity of that piece
So I received a beautiful piece of pear that I will turn this weekend.
Large enough to get two projects
One natural edge
One regular
First experience with plum
So excited
As usual you're my HERO Phil
Wow, thank you, Darrell! 😄 Every time I pass through Redding I get a ticket!
I think you knew it would be a challenge before you started still the end result was worth the effort, good job Phil. 😁
Thank you so much, Gwynn! 😄
So, the woodturning gods were with you on this one! Looks great!
Thank you, Steve! 😄
When we get a hold of piece of beautiful wood like this, Rick, I think we have to do our best to bring out it's best. I'm glad you agree! 😄
Nice work brother Phil, you conquered that mountain 👊🏽 beautiful piece...
Thank you kindly, Ethan! 🙂
That would make a lovely yarn bowl. Lovely. ❤
😊
Wow! I was holding my breath along the way on this one with the loose bark and that incredibly large crack! Another beautiful piece Phil, well and truly a beautiful piece. 💖
Thanks so much, Vicki! 😄
It's just simply gorgeous! (in a rather complicated manner, but simply!) 😉
Thank you, Dave! 😊
Nicely done your skill was showing. I laugh every when you say " its' in the book". Based upon your turnings your books and storage must be amazing. Take care guy!!
Glad you enjoyed it, John! 😄 Yeah, it's a big house! LOL!
Another hit out of the park, Phil. It's always a pleasure seeing your work. I always look forward to seeing what you post on your next video. Blessings.
Awesome, thank you, Dave! 😄
I admire your patience and determination--and the bowl!
Haha, yeah, this one was getting to me, Crystal! 😄
The word that comes to mind, if you'll excuse me, is cojones. Not sure I would have taken this on but so glad you did. Thanks!
I'm just glad it stayed together, Michael! Thanks for watching! 😄
That is beautiful Phil! No epoxy needed. I really like epoxy pieces but it would absolutely ruin the natural beauty of what you do. Your stuff is on whole different level. And very much appreciated.
Very kind of you, Karen, thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😄
Very nice job, not many people would take the time to turn a piece of wood with that big of a crack.
Probably not, Ronnie and maybe that's a good thing! 😄
Wow, Phil, that turned out beautifully! Your respect for the natural beauty of the wood is so gratifying. There are times when the fillers are appropriate, for sure, but your affinity for turning the wood as it comes to you sets you apart from so many of the rest of us. Thanks!
That's a good way to put it, Greg. "Turning the wood as it comes to me." I didn't set out to do that but I guess that is exactly what I do. Thanks! 😄
This has a lot of character. Beautiful.
Thank you, Khan! 😄
See you in the morning with my mug of Tea Phil
I'll be waiting, Huw! 😄
Jane ❤
Never give up, Jane! LOL! thank you for watching and commenting! 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Keep up the good work, Phil.
Phil, you are a really artist on the lathe. What a beautiful bowl. I love your work ❤👏👏🙌
I'm so glad, thank you! 😄
Most people would not turn this wood but you stuck with it Phil and it turned out amazing love the colours and the grain we'll done 👍 buddy
Thank you, Phil! 😄
Never carved any plum before. Always wanted to carve some persimmon. That plum is gorgeous.
It is! 😄
That is amazing! I’ve been turning a piece of Oak today, a few bug holes and a couple of fine cracks and I worried about those! Then I come in and see this! Wow!! Dunno what I was worried about🤪😉👍🏻
Haha, well, we all have to do what feels good, I guess. Just have to stay out of the line of fire! 😄
Wow I can finally breath. I think I held my breath for most of that video Phil waiting for it to go flying. But I sort of knew it wasn't going to.
Lots of work but well worth it. I would say it came out perfect. Very impressive turning and a great finish.
Great job my friend,
Gary
Once I got it into the chuck I felt pretty good about the jaws holding it together. I was fearful taking it out of the chuck and pleasantly surprised it stayed in one piece. I was holding my breath, too! LOL! Thanks, buddy, your turn! 😄
Well I knew you would getERdone!
Mine could have been a real knuckle buster!
As it "Turned" out ...well you can wait and see LOL
What a beautiful end result. I applaud your efforts to save the bark because the nature of the piece just makes it so special.
Thank you, Jim! 😄
🌷🐰Happpppppy Spring, Phil!🤎💛💚🌷 Beautiful bowl Looks like a hoof. Still lots of snow here. We can still go out on the ice of the lake, as nights are still below freezing.
Warm days are a comin', Red! 😄
Wow! I was holding my breath the whole time. It’s beautiful!
Breathe, breathe, Denise, it's over! 😄 Thank you!
Love it Phil you kept me on the edge again 😅
Haha, me too, Bobby! 😊
I'm glad it held together, Phil. That wood has some really nice grain.
Bill
Me too, Bill! Thanks for watching! 😄
Phil, that bowl is gorgeous! I love the grain and the crack! You are definitely a Master!
Thank you, Carol!
So kind of you, Michael, thank you! 😄
You are always challenging yourself Phil. And what a wonderful piece.
Thank you, Michael! 😄
Phil this bowl looks awesome. I love the natural crack and bark. As always thanks for sharing. Be well my friend
Thank you, Linda! 😄
I love your patience, Phil. Another great piece of work. 😊
Thank you, Aubrey! 😄
