    Thank you, Mr. Janowski! This is the true soul of Schumann. This is the best Rheinische experience in more than 50 years as listener and in about 40 years as a professional classic orchestra musician.

      Yes it is wonderful, Have you heard Leonard Bernstein's version with the Vienna Philharmonic? It's better I think, specially the 3° and 4° movement

      You bet! I listen to ALL computer music on a wondrous headset. Speakers are quite inferior reproducers. The cabinet is full of peaks and valleys that distort the music.

    Magnificent! Well played and relationship with orchestra and conductor superb. Janowski does not need the score, he knows and feel Schumann's passion. Brahms must have listened to this and studied it! Schumann passes his musical legacy!

    IMHO, Schumann's four symphonies are highly underrated. This piece is amazing and extremely well played although it's a bit faster than I've heard before.

      I agree that it's a bit faster here. I actually like it that way which is unusual for me. I normally prefer a somewhat slower tempo but the up tempo in the last movement gives it a graceful energy that it needs.

    I've heard people call Schumann "second-rate Brahms", which is completely absurd. Wonderful performance of a wonderful symphony.

      It's rather the opposite. Schumann is a deeper composer than Brahms. Brahms seems deep but it's just dense.

      I've never heard of this! Schumann's music is also not just his symphonies. He is, just like Brahms one of the great Composers of the german romantic era of music

      Not to mention, they were close friends until R. Schumann died. After his death, Clara Schumann (his wife) and J. Brahms continued as friends.

      @@mrdietergericke Exactly. Schumann's depth is not shown in his symphonies, but in his piano and chamber music. A good example is his Dichterliebe. Schumann and Brahms were friends, but that doesn't mean they were equally great or had a similar musical style.

    I appreciate valuable performance.
    It is majestic and dazzling
    play. Orchestral organization also is impeccable. This masterpiece is one of my favorites. Also Schmann
    loved this sympony as well
    as Clara. I depict twice this work unwittingly.

    I love how some conductors, like this one immediately start after coming on stage, causing some musicians to have trouble.

    2nd movement looks like
    Beethven sympony no.6.
    3rd movement has lyrical
    impression. The orchstra flow like moderate sea.fluently. Next part dashes into magnificent mood. It's even splendid.
    Finally the last movement
    run toward home.. harbor
    The performance is brillant.. It is so marvelous..

    From 9:10 (Scherzo) on, I hear "my" Lower Rhine Area. Wide, open areas (you can see who is going to visit you tomorrow), a (mostly) peaceful, calm and tender Rhine. Before, there's the dangerous upper Rhine with its cliffs, bends and dangers. I LOVE Beethoven -but the "Rheinische" is really home to me ...

    The first movement describes Schumann's impression of Koelner Dom. The second movement depicts the Fluss of Rhien. I used to live in Duesseldorf for seven years and used to walk along the Fluss of Rhein. Eiji Furuyama

    For years the first two minutes was the melody used in a TV program at the Dutch TV..... only complete forgotten which show it was, it has been ages.

      It was the opening music (Part two) in a local programme (18.00) of WDR, which means Westdeutscher Rundfunk (Cologne), West German Broadcasting.

    One can't fault this recording, such a blazing glow shimmers and entrances. Maestro Janowski ... lives this music.
    Worst aspect is the DREADFUL camera work, stunning horns in 2nd movement and shows trumpets.

    I've always liked the dramatic flow of this symphony - it just seems to lift me up and carry me along in its pleasant journey, and Janowski keeps it moving. It's beautifully performed, although a little more urgency and weight in the 'feierlich' would have been welcomed. In fact the whole symphony could have benefited from that treatment.

    I think Schumann had a different way approaching a symphony. I hardly find something that resembles his melodies-harmonies that i can recognise in his pianistic works although they have a symphonic writing. If someone told me that this symphony is from an another romantic composer i would easily get convinced.

    I have probably heard the Rhenish Symphony more than any other one. I especially love the blazing horn parts. This performance is just a little too fast for my taste.

    That very strange syncopation at 1:14 gets me every time I hear it. I guess syncopation is the wrong word. It's at bar 63, where flutes, horns & 1st violins carry the melody and oboes, clarinets & bassons lag half a bar behind.

      the opening theme of this symphony is one of the most uplifting melodies in the entire repertoire...after that the music can't maintain the same level of inspiration...

    Does anyone know if (and how) the fanfare at 30:20 is related to the last movement of Mahler's first symphony? In my ears it sounds too similar to be a coincidence?

      Must be something about this piece. I saw Muti conduct it in Philadelphia about 40 years ago - he gave the downbeat while the audience was still applauding!
