Why I wish I never bought the Hollyland Mars M1 Camera Monitor

- The monitor has a fantastic build quality but the software is a mess.
Skip to 6:07 for the features that drive me insane:
- Long boot up times
- Slow connectivity when connecting video feeds
- The color button is off for sub pages in the menu
- The Peaking value measurement is weird
- The Peaking doesn't work when you 2x or 4x in (so what's the point)
- The false color chart blends in, and doesn't have values
- A monitor white balance setting (The feature I am most annoyed about)
- The flip screen doesn't orient the screen properly for panning features
- When screen is flipped the menu doesn't flip as well
- The fan is super loud
- The SDI doesn't do 4k
- The Dtap cable isn't a right angle
- There is a lag in video feed even when hard lined into the camera - Кино
UPDATE!
Mars reached out after seeing this video and their customer support was amazing! I just posted a video about it.
Don't get me wrong, this monitor still has it's issues on the software side of things but based on my experience working with their team I am very excited to see what the M2 will look like!
I just purchased the the m1, but can't wait for the next gen. Camera tech is getting kinda crazy.
Thank you for the honest review.
Thanks for being a real reviewer, really enjoy content made by people who have used the product in their own workflows. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do! Also I should state that Mars reached out after seeing this video and their customer support was amazing! I just posted a video about it.

omg thank you so much, when you were talking about the lag i was like "yeah thats ok wireless from a cheaper monitor, thats to be expected" but omg when it clicked that it lags when its wired. you just saved me 500 bucks
Thanks for saving us money!
I use their transmitters with feelworld monitors to iPad. But I hate Feelworld monitors, so I thought this would solve my issues, but I guess not yet.
I was hoping Atomos Connect would do it, but that’s a entirely different product.
amazing review !! and it's crazy how many features are way off the mark !
Those white balance numbers are actually pretty common in other monitors. Almost every monitor I’ve had has that feature. I just keep it on the temp that matches my camera
Even type C power input would be great. You could get any right angle type C cable of any length or quality. And it's surprisingly secure.
Bought this monitor and had all these same problems - the SDI lag is a dealbreaker for me all on its own (luckily sent it back in the return window). What's more insane to me is so many RUclips reviews of this monitor don't mention any of this stuff lol
Hey man,
Great video. I’m in a doubt about the m1 and just buying an ipad to use it as a monitor for the client. What would you recommend based on your experience?
I wish hollyland did release a 90 degree bracket or something for the 400s pro ,
interesting we have 3 of these as well as the 4k transmitters, Never had any issues pullying focus, we use the SDI out from the Canon C500MK2, intresting how you say you cant pull focus.....
Thanks for the review. You saved me from buying this.
Glad I could help
what monitor do you recommend for someone who films weddings? I currently have the ninja v but it's giving me problems, do you have any good recommendations?
SmallHD all the way
Does it provide clean HDMI out? and does it transmit with the luts applieds to the receaver?
Damn 😞 sad to hear that. Do you think the Vaxis Atom 5 could be better?
Not sure I'll have to look into it. I will say though, Mars Customer Support team is next level. After they saw this video they reached out and really went above and beyond in trying to fix the situation. Just posted a whole video on it. This monitor still has it's issues but I have a good feeling that the next iteration of this monitor is gonna be a game changer.
@@kantolafilms Aside from the things you mentioned I wish they can also add a second battery plate for hot swaps
@@ArturoLauren Yeah that would be nice, especially with the slow boot up time
The SDI input is dreadful - I’m the same, I bought two under the impression that it could be used as a Focus puller monitor. They’re terrible. Great screen and build. But they’re not for focus pulling.
Hi, Im interested in the product for focus pulling. Is there any better option at this price?
Can you do a review of the enhanced model?
I’ll have to look into it I didn’t realize they released one
Tbf mostly all reference monitors are calibrated to 6500k
Here’s a pretty good test between three (still “prosummer”) Remote Monitors…
I’m sure where the expectation comes from - that 4K images should be instantaneous 🧐 they all have latency - as one would expect - but there was a good point in this video - that MARS works over UHF which minimizes the chance of interference and drop-outs (for anyone who tried to record sound in a heavy WIFi office!)

I dunno, I find this “review” kinda “annoying”
I get that there’s an Expectation but it’s really a “Wish List” some valid… most trivial.
I think the main point is that this IS - “prosumer” monitor and “professional” remote monitoring cost 💲 professionally thousands of dollars.
So they took short cuts to keep this under a $1K like all the other gear in this ecosystem… are you going to complain about the FX3 not having internal ND like the FX6??? Buy an FX6!
Maybe I just had a simpler use-case… I’m running FX3s and an A1 and I wanna walk into my set and see what things look like from all three camera rigs at once.
If I’m gonna fine tune lights, focal length, color temperature… I’m gonna do that ON each camera (and I have a Ninja for each FX3 plugged it the camera so I don’t rely of the latest tech to send a 4K image - wirelessly - across the studio… I can’t make adjustments - wirelessly - anyway!
So far this product seems to offer a nice compromise - letting me walk through my set and see what looks like… I’m just thinking of a way to mount the three monitors on to one bracket… still gonna need another remote to start the recording all at once! But I wouldn’t expect my monitor to do that…
Subbed #44
good video but way too long. you could hace compressed that info a little better. thx though
Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate the feedback and makes a lot of sense. Filmed this without planning and more on the fly, but I would have been much better if planned ahead and streamlined 👍
Thank God I saw this video, I almost bought this crap.
haha it was a little annoying... and then it was SUPER ANNOYING!
You just talking about nothing.
