- Ukraine turned to prisons to recruit inmates for the military as it continues to experience manpower shortages in its fight against Russian aggression. The Kyiv Independent got access to two Ukrainian prisons, providing a glimpse into how the recruitment is going and how inmates feel about this new option.

i think those prisoners are safer in cells than brutal and hell on earth frontlines
Nowhere in Ukraine is safe since Russia's war is ongoing
It would be breaking a settlement between victims and verdicts. See...for instance what about or with those punished with sex crimes, human trafficking, the fabrication of forbidden drugs and productions of or first handler trader hierarchie criminals, narcotics, etc. So heavy criminality excluded from being able to join this, sorry, but I don't think that is sane to do. But to be punished according to a order of a judge, sometimes multiple judges, and attempts to come judgement, with higher court and laws leading to it in place it can be an enduring case. Specially when dealing with prisoners and mental states of them, etc. Resettling that into a army contract, is a Russian method. But we do not allow this. As a European I say this is not the way. Yet hiring mercenaries is a different thing, but for a set and sound recognition, not a bail out of jail.
So temporary - All besides - psychopaths and sociopaths and murderers and so onward. But theft of money or insurance or such related crimes, drug related ones - release is possible, and on base of judgement on their behaviours in the army, they may be either shortened, or bailed out, for instance when ending up heavily wounded, extremely well behaved, recognition citizenship. Etc. Being in prison in wartime, in a nation under attack, seems a little overly exposed to danger, which should not be. A safe prison time assured. Imprisoning someone, a real serious responsibility.
Voluntary would be the only way I see it possible to get them out temporarily. By reason and extreme shortage on soldiers at the front. Simple as that. That be possibly the only way a higher judge would judge this into reality and a possibility. And definitely not without the same course off action, as for training and educating them. I guess the only way, to make your statement possible? I would say 85% sure, yes. With a minimal contract of 3 and a maximum of 5 years. Would be preferred. If that is what they feel they can repay something with, heal some of the wounds, that they should get that chance. Why not...right.. :) 👍 I'd say go for it!
Yes, they are. However, many non-violent criminals are not sociopaths and may want to defend their nation, just like anyone else. With these laws, they may, if they can convince the board of their conviction.
😂😂😂 what ?@@GnosticAtheist
@@user-xs6th9xi2i Some prisoners may want to serve in the military. In order for them to be able to apply for service, they must be non-violent prisoners and be found motivated enough. It is indeed dangerous to go to the front-lines, but a prisoner might still want to protect their nation.
I know Ukraine needs boots on the ground. However, I hope these prisoners do not betray Ukraine.
Given that non-prisoners have betrayed Ukraine, it won't surprise me if some prisoners do.
Ukraine is as corrupt as anyone. These "criminals" could be completely innocent or just hold beliefs the current regime deems criminal...
The only negative thing here is that they want to form a battalion of only inmates. That is not smart... they should be distributed in all areas and not only with other former inmates...
It will only create a "us" within' the army... inevitably they will complain about being only used for bad assignments or isolated...
They should be like any other soldier...
I would agree with you in theory, but penal units have traditionally not mixed well with professional soldiers. You also just can't trust them to hold the line in the same way you can trust a properly motivated soldier. I do agree, however, that they should be respected and not used as cannon fodder. More dissent in the ranks is not what Ukraine needs right now, and these people can be very valuable if trained and supported properly.
They are cannon fodder, we all know it
I think that we are generally dealing with people of low moral character here. It would be best to not have their attitudes infect other soldiers.
@@jonathanjacob5453 at the end they will be forced to be just another soldier, but if you form separate unit, than it will be problem eventually, it become some sort of mobile prison
Horrible idea, 20k is enough to have their own units and even if there wasn't you don't mix them in with regular soldiers.

Remember what a terrible thing this was when it was a russian policy?
read the article idiot. POV's, not criminals
The video literally states that inmates with violent and serious crimes are still not allowed to join, it's for inmates with lighter sentences to redeem themselves. Literally when the Ukrainians interviewed captured Wagner fighters some of the Russian convict confessed that they were rapist and murderers, the worse of the worse.
The Russian policy was for people to serve a given time period and be given freedom, regardless of them being mass murderers and cannibals, everyone can imagine the issues that arise with this, which has been demonstrated in reality with the same people who got released again committing terrible crimes..In this case not only aren't the prisoners convicted of particilarly serious crimes, but Ukrainian military does also not operate with this limited time period in service
Just read the title huh? XD

The irony is the surname "Netavrovanyi" means "unbranded" (wasn't subjected to branding) but he has gone down despite that.
Those who don't behave in society and end up in prison, need to redeem themselves, a penal unit serves that purpose, at least it brings some value and purpose to their lives, they could also be military equipment maintainer's or work on logistics in the frontlines. In the US we have around 1.9 million in prison, we should draft legislation and send .9 million to help out in the front lines.

Wanting to be Europeans and Members of the Union, as well as a member of NATO, than you know, that we will not, and shall not force prisoners into a army function. It is a hard rule. @@kyivindependent Than it is temporary mercenaries, with a frozen sentence and paused sentence. Which is what I stated clearly, that is excluded from EU law. So ... like I said?! Go ahead, but make sure there is no mistakes made, since these will count dreadfully. It will be hard to point to Russia doing the same things, when you do them yourself as well. ICC will take in to account when this construction is misused. And as Ukraine you would not want that to happen. Last not least, why not hire mercenaries from befriended nations? Why so difficult? Why not just ask supporting nations, to be able to market and request for interested people to join the Ukraine Foreign Forces? Why so...difficult and non constructive, why seeking solutions so close to criminal structures? Because it is easy? You know what easy is, is to talk about this issue with political leaders, request them to leave you free to market for soldiers or military help etc, in their nations, posters in bus stops all over EU and befriended nations. I would not mind those, since that would simply be legal...specially when you hand them a same training for the same time, and let them pass through your armies as equals, with equal opportunity and not use them as quick fix/cannon fodder, than what would be against it? Ask for the freedom to do so, and you might get it. Hiring criminals as mercenaries, is definitely in what ever way, not a quick fix either. And this action here is leaning toward misuse, and will be misused, when you can not treat them equally, since after their service they will have to still answer to their frozen sentences, and therefore can not even receive the same treatments as any other soldier in your armies. So...do not even cross that line. Ask EU for better opportunities to market for soldiers amongst Europeans, and you might get the opportunity to ask them to join you. Good luck.
Please be careful.. Sounds like a scary idea but yes, Selection. I hope.
Yes, there's a strict selection process, and the inmates who commited heavy crimes like murder are not allowed to join. Read more in the story here: kyivindependent.com/inside-ukraines-prisoner-recruitment-efforts-to-bolster-front-line-troops/
Illegal possession of ammunition? What kind of crime is that? In the U.S. you can have as much ammo as you want and guns too. Ukraine should encourage gun ownership and give every veteran not only the right to bear arms but the responsibility to help if they can in maintaining the peace. The news said they handed out 11,000 machine guns when in Kiev when Russia attacked and I assume some ammo to go with it. They should have released him right then. Can a farmer not go deer hunting if he wants on his own land . This guy did nothing wrong. In the U.S. we have more registered guns than we have people. They sell ammo in Department stores. You can get your groceries, buy a new shirt(made in China) and a box or two of ammo and a shotgun all in the same store.
So far it's a crime in here. Maybe later Ukraine will ammend the law
Ukraine had a referendum in 2021 where more than 60% voted for gun ownership. Now is 2024. It looks like they have wiped their ass with the result sheet - they heard the peoples opinion and decided not to do anything.
That's why the US has so many many shootings every year it's the same things every year, i.e., schools, malls, drive-by shootings, etc, so completely different rules in war. This war is very brutal plus its been going on for three years now
