- The Kyiv Independent has obtained footage of Ukrainian authorities questioning a Nepali prisoner of war captured when he was fighting for Russia in Ukraine. The footage was obtained from intelligence sources. The Kyiv Independent edited it for brevity.
Russia has reportedly recruited thousands of Nepali men to fight in its war against Ukraine.
Media reports suggest that Russians have recruited people from other countries of Asia, Africa, and Middle East, often targeting poor and embattled countries, and luring fighters with a promise of high wages.
At least 14 Nepalese citizens were killed when fighting for Russia in Ukraine, according to the Nepalese government, while some ended up in Ukraine’s captivity.

In Nepal, a career in the Armed Forces is basically the golden ticket. If not with the Brits, then the Indians or Singaporeans. Even the Nepali Forces has a very generous compensation package and benefits by local standards.
That means throughout Nepali history, there has never been conscription, and selection for even a normal enlisted trooper is de facto more selective than most officer corps around the world. Only the brightest and most hardy of men in Nepal makes it into basic training to begin with, since historically, everyone wants to join the Armed Forces of either Britain, India, the Singaporean Police, or since the early 90s, also the Nepali forces. The pre-civil war Nepali forces was very small and your chances were nonexistent compared to becoming a British Gurkha or Indian Gorkha.
Evidently, some spooks in Russia knows this about Nepali society, and they've pumped the airwaves in Nepal with a whole lot of lies. Especially in Tik Tok.
Exceedingly few ex-servicemen of Nepali roots will be susceptible to Russian lies, for anyone who has fluent comprehension of English (read: anyone who has served in the British, Indian, Singaporean, or Nepali armed services) will know how ridiculous Russian lies are.
But Russia isn't trying to recruit the cream of the crop. Russia is going after the average worker who daydreams of an army contract that is forever out of reach for most of Nepali men. Until now. And that's the sort of folks who gets sent to the meat grinder. People who at best know only basic English, and thus wouldn't have much of a chance at understanding the news about what's actually happening in Ukraine. The people whose entire window to the world is those Nepali language Tik Tok pushed out by russia.
These people need to know what they're signing up for. Not a normal military service. But complicity in a genocide, and near certain death.
I'm not asking any Nepali to fight. But if you clue the average Nepali to the mortal risks and what the stakes are about - I'm willing to wager, the ones still willing to fight will come to the conclusion that Ukraine is on the right side of history, and that's where they'd belong. For most of history, Nepal has a honorable history throughout the modern wars. Gorkha and Nepali Army troops fought against the Imperial Japanese in Myanmar, forcing back the brutal Imperialists at Imphal and Kohima alongside their Indian and Commonwealth contemporaries. In their occupation of postwar Japan alongside the British, they conducted themselves civilly and with utmost discipline. Nepali constables staved off racial violence in mid 20th century Singapore, and did their part upholding Malaysian sovereignty against Sukarno's aggression in that same time period. When Yugoslavia fell apart, British Gurkhas and Nepali Army troops did their part in Bosnia, and Nepali armed servicemen from all branches are a cornerstone of UN peacekeeping operations ever since the 1990s.
Frankly speaking, I never thought I'd ever seen Nepalis among the russian invaders. But such is the power of russian disinformation combined with desperation of the vast majority of the men who didn't make the cut against a very selective recruitment process across 4 nations and their many branches of armed services.
To fight in this war is not a trivial commitment. All I ask is that aspiring, informed, and qualified Nepalis be given the opportunity to do the right thing and give their family a chance at greater opportunities. It is an utter disgrace that russia has conned these men, yet there has been no concerted effort to help the well-informed Nepalis to fight on the right side of history.
Hire them for Ukraine.

Ukraine doing the Russian strategy of putting lower quality foreign recruits in the thickest fighting to soak up enemy fire looks bad for Ukraine which Ukraine cares about more than whatever limited combat value they might have.

So what does that have to do with anything, many poorer countries will vote for something just to get along, not rock the boat so to speak. It doesn't mean they really think that way, also Nepal has had a long standing arrangement with the British concerning Nepalese (Gurhkas) presence in the British army, so it's no wonder they'd vote whichever way Britain does.

As fellow nepalese, i am deeply ashamed of my fellow countrymen. By level of his english speaking skills, he isn't exactly poor or unskilled. Wish he had used his skills in something else.

I'm a bit sad for them but much more for the Ukrainians who are innocent (the soldiers too). I agree with you. Even if they believed they were only going to work in logistics they're still invading as military, and their service would free up a russian to take a gun and kill those who live there. They're accomplices. Ukraine's law must deal with them.
Finally, yes I know the Nepalese government is doing all it can to prevent Nepalese people from getting involved in the war, on either side (I don't know if there's a difference in penalty). I understand that it's now illegal to take any job in either russia or Ukraine.

If the country of that military in question doesn't want to honour the responsibility for any wrong acts by the fighter then that country has a problem. But the fighter is still and must be treated with the rights of a legal soldier. And naturally face his own responsibility for any wrong acts, but within the legal system.

It is legal for Nepalis to join the british army and serve in the legendary Gurkha regiments. When Nepal became independent that was kept between the two countries because of the proud traditions that the Nepalis built up serving as Gurkhas. But the standards to join and serve are very high. The difference is that the Gurkha regiments offer a long term career path and they are very well cared for and led.
The lines to join the British Gurkhas are endless. Not a viable option.

Nepalese took labour jobs there knowing the risk that one day they could be bombed. This kind of jobs started with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars hired by multi-national countries through agents. Can you guess which supers countries? Nepal is a landlocked country sandwiched between the mercy of China and India. People there knows no seas or global political knowledge of other countries besides the two aforementioned countries. Inflation is high there. How would some nobody living in Nepal know that? I live in US now but when I lived in Africa I would often take jobs in logistics for armies. Sometimes I would cook sometimes I would sort supplies, etc.... I never hurt anyone. Never near a front line. This guy probably didn't think he would be sent to fight in front lines.

Right after Russia invaded Ukraine, India stopped recruiting many Nepalese in the Gurkha battalions, leaving many potential recruits with no future. It was bound to happen. Both India and Russia were fully aware of the outcome.
To be honest India does not give a fuck about Ukraine, we have mostly profited out of the war , it's not our problem not a global issue to have to dealt with. India is not even morally obliged to support Ukraine, we will always support Russia though we are not vocal about it . We stopped recruiting Gorkha from Nepal because we have our own sizable ethnically neplai population in multi states of India and we have introduced a new reform in our recruiting policy called agnipath scheme which is very controversial and deter any Gorkha who want to join Indian army .So it was not intentional to stop recruiting Gorkha to help Russia rally soldiers from Nepal but at the same time we fully Russian offensive.

The Nepali "volunteers", as a group of say 4000, add 4 days of absorbable casualties at the now normalized going rate of 1000 casualties a day. Throw in all the foreign "volunteers" and they probably add a month at best. Not much, but it is something.
