Just for a little critic here. You included Illaoi's R in your video while excluding Orianna's R for the "conditions/synergies with the champion's kit" reasons. But Illaoi depends as much on her E and W to make her R valid : if you E before, you get one more tentacle spawn, and the W is ABSOLUTELY needed to make her R works aswell.

Is Kled R a super ult? Cuz from half to full lethality build he can deal 50%+ max health physical damage as well as speeding up teammates a lot and he has a strong kit enabling him to burst down the target he hit very quickly.

Having an underwhelming set of basic abilities alongside a game changing ultimate was kind of the standard for a lot of classic DotA characters, so it makes sense that most of these are only found on old champions
The main diference is that in DotA you can compensate for your underwhelming basic abilities with items that give you new abilities, as to not make your character nothing but a walking ultimate

Umm, actually, that's not true at all. In league those underwhelming basic abilities at least have some AP/AD scalings so you can still be powerful, especially in the late game. For example, full AP Seraphine can melt tanks with q alone, meanwhile Enigma is a walking creep outside his ultimate. Interesting that you put Nunu in there. I would have rather placed MF there.
Except for AP Nunu Aram memes, I am never scared of Nunus Ult. Maybe its because I dont see Nunu... like... ever? But the newer champions are usually mobile enough to escape or block his ult easily, which negates a bit of the strength.
MF ult on the other hand deals damage instantly, standing in it for a mere second can be lethal and it also has good area.

    • @Neion8
      @Neion8 2 года назад

True but AP Nunu ult can literally hit 2 and a half times harder than a Lux ult (no joke Lux ult at max is 500+100%AP, Nunu's hits for 1275+250%AP) - hell Nunu's fully charged Ult hits harder than Lux's entire ability combo (240+270+500+190=1200 base damage+ 60+70+100+20=250%AP scaling) so that's 1200+250%AP from an entire kit of a mage vs 1275+250% from a single ability... How is that not a super ult? Then on top of that Nunu gets an 85+150%AP+50%bonus health shield from it - compared to Lux's 125+35% shield from her kit.
Imagine you're on a team with no stuns/knockups/supressions and as you're nearly killing Baron you see the edge of Nunu Ult reach out from behind the wall to touch Baron; it could easily deal upwards of 2k damage even with a partial build, so how tf are you gonna outsmite it? How tf are you gonna burst through a massive shield plus a fairly tanky character in less than 3 seconds all while it's emmitting an up to 95% slow in a massive area, potentially preventing multiple teammates from helping the fight? Also, you know if you fail you then potentially have everyone on your team take over 1500 damage (since with a 650 unit radius, even Caitlyn can't auto Nunu without being in range of it), putting even your (non-Sion/Cho'gath) tanks in danger of getting one-combo'd by Nunu's other abilities.

Problem with fiddle ult is that he needs to channel. He can be interrupted while doing it. So he has to ambush mostly. And if the enemy team just plays more carefully & have good vision, it loses some value. Also he may be killed after ulting before it gets full value, or people may zone him. He needs Zhonya to pull it off safely.
Malphite on the other hand can use his ult at will, either as ambush or as the fight ensues. He can't be interrupted. So while fiddle CAN do more with his ult, it is also easier to counterplay. Malphite ult is just a constant consistent threat no matter what. And it is instant full effect.

I'm surprised Morgana's ult is not here, literally a nightmare in teamfights as it scatters every one and forces to use their mobility or flash. 600 (+ 140% AP) on cast and after 3 secs inflicts additional 600 (+ 140% AP). Enemies receive true sight, slow, and stun. It also reveals stealthed champs since it becomes available when they're near you.

Even to this day I almost never use it until long after the lane phase is over and I have built Zhonya's. Morgana's Q is by far her most threatening ability, while her E has the most utility out of her kit, thus not qualifying her R as a Super Ultimate.

    • @ppp-zi3uu

her ult isn't that strong tho. without zhonya, I'd say it's borderline weak. her ult requires set up from hitting her Q (trust me, if the enemy isnt rooted, they can just dash walk away) and even you can hit her root, she's super squishy so it's very risky to go frontline like that. I would say her "super" ability is her Q. So strong that if given to any other midlane mages, it would be broken.

I think Azir's ult, Emperor's Divide, is a huge oversight in this video. Huge AoE knockup/knockback followed by a wall that allies can pass through but not enemies. Can be used for disengage and picks. But it's a seriously great engage. You can cc everyone and split the enemy team in two. Even more power comes when used in tight spaces like the jungle, making the fight very one-sided. It fits all the criteria too. It functions outside of Azir's kit, so Sylas still loves it. Not only does it have good damage, but it still poses a threat without that damage if Azir is behind. Definitely belongs on the list and in the discussion in my oppinion.

The boring thing about League is that pretty much all ults in the game (with a few exceptions) are "SUPER BIG WOMBOCOMBO BUFF/DAMAGE/CC." Champs like Jayce, Nidalee and Elise are fine, but I'd really like there to be a champ that has a passive ultimate they can't really cast that still gives them a massive spike. Jax is probably the only champion I can think of that fits this and he's hella fun imo. Would be nice if Riot could release a champion with a completely passive ult in the future but I honestly doubt that's gonna happen.
I say this because when I played Dota there were a few heroes there who had passive ults like Phantom Assassin, Bristleback, Tiny, Wraith King, Enchantress, Meepo, Ogre-Magi and Phantom Lancer who were super fun to play and were really interesting to control. I wish League could have some of that.

  • @jansolo4628

It's really interesting to see how different MOBAs treat ultimate abilities. Having played both SMITE and League (the former more), it's really interesting the way power budgets are distributed between these games for their super ultimates. Smite feels like 1/2 of their characters have Super Ultimates which makes the power budget towards the basic abilities skew differently than League's. It's no DotA (I've only played the original one as a kid and have no experience with the second one) but it's still noticeably different in my experiences.
One example is Chaac's ultimate that while channeling gives him ~2s of complete CC immunity and up to 70% damage mitigation (while being allowed to move) before having a knockup into a 3s silence in a huge area around him, with a cooldown that's lower than the average ultimate CD in SMITE. This causes him to have one of the worst base kits in the game yet it's more serviceable in teamfights than whenever I get Malph or Kennen outside of their laning phase. There's also Poseidon who has an average kit for a Mage but his Kraken, when hitting with the center of the ability, has a massive knockup and a 2s stun along with dealing double the damage, but most people still fear the CC more than the damage. It's used almost like Annie's Tibbers stun but without the need to stack and is part of one iconic moment is Smite's pro scene where a (generally considered) weaker team won a 3v5 base defense game due to hitting a 4-man Kraken (with ~100 health left on the base, btw).
Then again, SMITE also has a lot more stance swappers, so that's also something.

I also think this is a conversation about how champs with super ults are usually late game scalers and one with basically no ults are early game focused. I think this is a good thing for variety because sure you can win early but if the games goes on too long you have fumbled on ur advantage. Although if riot does more super ults champs they should have a smooth base kit, it doesn’t have to be powerful but it should help them get to the point where they are strong. Enchanters I think are a good example of this bc seraphine has a good base kit, and good ult. But her base kit is weaker in numbers which means she has to play good to get to late game.

  • @chabri2000
    @chabri2000 2 года назад

I have an idea of how you could make a champion with a super ultimate and decent primary abilities without it being overpowered:
1: Give the champion a super ultimate without reducing the power budget on primary abilities.
2: Whenever the champion uses ultimate, primary abilities become weaker for X seconds (reduce effects, damage, or both)
3: Whenever the champion uses a primary ability, it's ultimate ability becomes weaker for X seconds (reduce effects, damage, or both)
That way, you have a champion that can:
1: start a fight with a super ultimate, but then has weak primary abilities to continue the fight
2: start a fight with decent primary abilities, but then has an average normal ultimate
3: if the ultimate is on CD and X seconds had already passed since it was used, the champion has decent primary abilities to fight while the ultimate recharges

Giving a super ultimate champion tools that can help them cover circumstances over basic but tuned down abilities like Taric feels so much better as it allows them to have more choices as to how they play the game even while their ult is down. Fiddle without R is basically a support: A fear, a silence, AOE damage and survivability. Taric without R is... Taric without R. Not much.

fiddlesticks q is a massive part of his ult's terror though... cause the fear passive is insane, changing a high damage wide ult into a high damage wide cc ult. And it means when you don't have a chance for a proper bush ult you can still pick someone to keep in the pain zone

I'm not sure how Illaoi's Leap of Faith can be called a super ultimate (as per your definition) when most of its damage output and zoning capabilities rely on the reduced cooldown on Harsh Lesson and Illaoi's ability to continously make the tentacles smash down enemies when she casts it. The ult itself only makes the tentacles spawn

probably the same case with kennen as half of his ultimate's threat is from his passive

Excluding Orianna because she requires Positioning and then proceeding to talk about Gnar who literally needs walls to even perform a good ultimate ^^

Tbh Kindred's ult ain't sh- It would be unmatched if it would only protect allies, but in any fight, it quickly becomes not your ult but *our* ult.

I think you are undervaluing Malphites basic abilities.
As a malphite jungle player I can tell you that his slap is quite strong, the attack cripple is insane. All that is mediocre would be his Q. I would not mind if that leaves his kit for something cooler.
    But the rest is great.
Nunu's ult a super ult? It does almost nothing most of the time. Honestly, Nunu's base kit is way better than his ultimate. The snowball is such an amazing tool for movespeed, jungle manoeuvring, and CC. The Q, while basic, heals for a ton and is an extra smite meaning the buff and objective secure is top of the line. The slow and subsequent snare of his E is not to be underestimated and is probably the only thing that makes going for a Nunu ult worth it.
If I were to pick what I would call a super ultimate I would pick things like Fiddle, Pyke's(disgustingly broken) ult, Kennen, Amumu, Renata, Malphite, Yone, Sona, Seraphine, Nami, and Orianna.
Illaoi ult is garbage. Nunu ult is quite bad. Rumble ult is only good in a select few situations and not on it's own. Kindred ult is just pure meh for 95% of the times it is used. Same for Taric's ult. Zilean ult can be good but not THAT good unless you have a very fed person on your team. Kayle ult feels the same way but makes her unable to attack... with a champion that is all about attacking... Gnar ult can be considered one of those but I find it too predictable since he has to be in mega form.
A super ultimate has to be some that should be respected or sometimes even feared (Fiddle ult, haha, pun intended). I do not fear a Kindred ult. Or a Taric ult.

Fiddlesticks has to wait for his R, but he's still functional without it. Played as support, he can protect his carry with Fear, and poke decent enough when Reap in lane

could unstoppable onslaught be considered a super ulti? its like a combination between cc ulti, dmg ulti (at max rank and range even on tank i think it does like 800-1000 dmg) AND global ulti (and an escape, and a waveclear tool, and can like oneshot a base lategame if lethality lol), all aoe, albeit with some compromises to keep it from being broken

it needs to much setup to be useful
unlike malph R, anyone can block sion R
even jinx can block baus special

@@raphaelnej8387 if a jinx blocks it shes dead though, i mean yeah its less reliable but it has insane power in the right circumstance more than probably any other ulti in the game
i wouldnt say it needs more setup than a good fiddle r tbh

Playing solo, super ults are coinflips. However, if you've got a Jhin and a Pyke, then ulting the enemy with Kindred can be absolutely devastating. Super ults require coordination to work. However, they're pretty inconsistent.

With enough Ability Haste, Teemo's ult is a Super ult. Shrooms everywhere, melting health bars and forcing you to get oracle lens and pink wards every recall.

Quick disclaimer on my opinion, I do not play league and haven’t in seven years but do enjoy the game design exercise of trying to tackle its issues. The biggest plus of making a champion with ult in my eyes is reliability. Theres a lot of variables that change from match to match, but in theory the super ultimate will always be able to impact is a good feeling. It helps games feel less snow bally. But on the otherside yes the other parts of their kit (more specifically their up time) will be far lower which can make a champion feel like a walking R button. I think one of the characters who has the best balance is Nunu who is a much more macro objective based champion with the chomp acting as a second smite. His super ultimate allows nunu to focus on his while still being able to make big plays come a team fight in a way that allows for healthy counter play. Basically super ultimates I find work best in kits that are focused on a non-combat niches as a way of keeping a character relevant in team fights.

I think Malphite's ultimate is the best one in the game. It's a no-questions-asked ultimate. As a tank malphite it is a very strong instant mass cc with high range, & it's hard to avoid/dodge without flash or other dashes. With an ap malph it is all that + it bursts down any squshies without protection & atleast halves bruisers.
It has it's limitations as anything does, but it requires so little to be super-effective.
Fiddle has more dmg output but he has to channel, and he can be interrupted & cc'ed while ulting. You can't really cc the instant effect of Malph.
While the rest of the malph kit is pretty good anyway if you go ap. Q's do a significant single-target dmg, w's help you with extra armor & splash aa's. While the E does decent dmg as ap.
Malphite's main weakness is pre-6, and laning phase if up against a ranged enemy who can punish him while farming.
I actually wouldn't sleep on Ahri's ult either. She gets three additional "flashes" that deals damage. And if killing someone she gains extra charges up to a potential 7-8 charges. Nobody else has that kind of potential in pure mobility/positioning. If played correctly you can dash in & out of a teamfight several times, dodging enemy abilities & doing alot of damage. You can escape most things, & you can chase most enemies.

I think super ultimates are great, but when you gimp the base design of a character like malphite or tryndamere just because of their ults power its a design problem. Its probably why supports with their utility focused kits can have super ultimates so often.

I think that one champ that should be mentioned here but is not is Diana. Here ult has a built in cc, does more damage the more champs are hit, and does a great deal of damage. It seem to me like this should be a super ult, but I do not see it in discussion. I also think that Diana is one champ that show you can have a super ult and still be a normal champ. The rest of her kit is still very effective, but her ult is truly scary. Maybe I missed something on the requirements to be considered a super ult, but I think she should qualify.
