- Picking the right starting class for your build can be quite the choice, but what if the starting class WAS your build? What if you were to play Elden Ring with ONLY that class' equipment and nothing more? Check out this samurai starting gear only build using the Uchigatana, the Red Thorn Roundshield, and the Land of Reeds Set to cut down all remembrances in the lands between... even Malenia!

Love how its not a question of if Samurai is better, just by how much.

not the best stats, just the best gear
Vagabond is right there with it for default gear. Better armor, a 100% physical block shield, longsword with square off which is better than unsheath for staggering, and a halberd as well.
I've done playthroughs with both and the vagabond seems easier a lot of the time just because square off staggers a lot more frequently than unsheath and has a lower FP cost which makes up for the missing bleed.

The 3 best to start, though Astrologer and Wretch (for customization and cheap leveling) are cool too.
Samurai definitely is the best if you are doing starter equipment only, but Wretch is unironically the best normally. Because you start at level 1 with 10 in every stat, this gives you 2 huge advantages:
1: If you reset your stats because you want to switch builds, you have an even 10 so you don't have to worry about wasting points in line dexterity if you're making a magic build (just an example)
2: Because you start at level 1, compared to classes who start at level 6 you can choose what you want to put those 6 levels into. This is easy because you have 6 nearly free levels, they are so cheap you'll have enough runes by the time you unlock Torrent.
Lastly, it also has war cry, which is just a really damn good ash for melee builds. You deal good poise damage 2 handing the club and you are light rolling. Honestly, the only downsides are:
No armor
Club isn't as good as katana and bow (obviously)
If you wanna use a dex build, samurai's the best but for anything else I think Wretch is by far the best choice.

Doesn't make a lot of sense for Erdtree Avatars to be resistant to slash. If a tree is weak to fire, it should also be weak to getting chopped down, right?
IRL slashing blades are effective against skin and leather/cloth, but wood/bark is a lot tougher. Not on par with metal, but much harder than any animal hide.
What trees are weak to is chopping, which is a different motion - slashing draws the blade along the cut, chopping drives a wedge directly inward. What Erdtree avatars should really take more damage from is axes.
Name an axe that does slash damage
Chopping has always been represented by the Standard physical damage type in Souls. Straight cutting oriented swords should really do Slash but eh.
well slashing isnt chopping, its slashing.
if you took a knife and pressed the blade against… meat, and basically slid the edge of that blade along the meat youd be slashing, creating large open cuts on the surface.
if you took a cleaver and just brought it down on the meat youd be chopping or cutting it, thats “standard” or “normal” damage in DS, just severing things by making straight deep cuts.
Yeah, axes being bad at Tree feels wrong
Since I have subscribed, I have found the location of the ritual sword talisman and the dagger talisman. I can confirm that my crits do deal more damage.

I'm really looking forward to the Prophet class run, personally. Catch Flame is incredible and it is a fast short ranged spell so Tulok'll probably have fun with it. The Heal spell the class starts with is also pretty good and the Short Spear as well will be quite helpful. And I guess you'll also be able to use the Rickety Shield for the memes.
P.S. The Samurai was still amazing even if things like the Warrior Jar Shard for 10% extra Ash of War damage and the Millicent's Prosthesis (for the majority of the run) weren't even used.

Uchi's Unsheathe was the only thing that made me able to beat Malenia with an RL1 character. So much stance damage, combined with occasional jumping R2s.
I personally watch these for both the enjoyable political takes AND the bad dragon jokes.

oh, what you said about the blood dog doing 11,000 damage per second reminds me of an old video by "josh strife hayes", part of a series he did called something like "i played the craziest MMO to the end"...
one enemy was supposed to do something like 100-150 damage per second, BUT, because of a glitch, it did 100-150 damage PER FRAME OF ANIMATION, which always killed his character before he even had a change to heal!
he actually started ALL OVER with a different character that had more max health JUST to get past that ONE enemy!

Samurai gear is also easily purchasable from Caelid Merchant in far north who also sells infinite poison arrows for those that want different class but also the gear to buy.
"If a boss tries to gank you, gank them back!!" Words to live by in elden ring. They give you tons of tools to do it too.

Been doing the same challenge lately.
I have Vagabond and Warrior finished. Used only their starting gear but allowed myself to use a different weapon of the same type.
So for Vagabond I used the Dragon Halberd.
And for Warrior I used dual curved swords blood build.
No change in armor.
It’s super fun.
I love your rapid delivery and humor, but i also appreciate the lefty themes that show up occasionally.

Only slightly annoyed we didn’t get a time for beating Elden beast, I’m sure it would’ve been an easy S tier if all remembrances wasn’t counted, but eh, what can you do, and these starting class challenges are a super fun concept (I started with Bandit for my second playthrough and *oh god* I pray for your sanity on that one)

I tried doing a run like this where I allowed myself to use other weapons within the same class as the starting gear. I immediately ran all the way to Volcano Manor to get the Serpentbone Blade. It’s a shame I never finished the run since trying to do the assassination quests that underleveled was rough

There is no damage penalty early game for radagon's soreseal! +5 in vigor more than counteracts the 15% damage penalty (at 20 vigor the +5 gives you +22% HP, capping off at around 37 vigor after which you get less than 15% HP for 5 points in vigor). So for early levels, everything else is essentially free stats, even the extra health.
I gotta say, the "google X on your work computer" are my favorite jokes from this series.

30:55 that issue also exists with the kindred of rot talisman. It's either a bug, or a weird code issue
1:16 happens a lot. another instance of this happening is jumping off a ledge, catching a pixel, then jumping back onto the ledge. the game detects you falling and measures the distance of the fall, if you catch a surface and are able to jump off of it quickly enough, it doesn't detect a landing and continues to measure the fall. landing back on top of the area you originally jumped from, or an area above it, causes the fall to go into negatives integers, leading to an insta death.

I love funky slants not registering as “grounded” when you land. It makes for some of the goofiest-looking deaths imo.
Vagabond has awesome armor is medium rolling (bearable) and has a halbert weapon with the charge ash which is pretty good for the early game or just a general gap closer
It has square off..... might be the best ash of war in the game for value. It does 40 posture damage and only costs 8 FP. Making it significantly better than unsheath for posture which only does 30, while also costing less FP.

In theory you could have run an icy-hot on Malenia by using the bow with frostbone arrows, but I suppose you figured that the change in arrow type violates the starting gear rule.

@31:50 If you don't do a perfect parry, you block the attack; since most parrying shields don't have 100% physical resistance and piss have poor guard boost, this converts to a bit of damage and a huge chunk of stamina lol
Brass can be a parry shield (golden parry, etc.)

The fact that they gave the Samurai, who represents a style of warfare that rarely, if ever, used shields, a parry shield is kind of silly. Kinda seems like they just threw that in for good measure.
It is a bit silly, but I suppose bringing the ds3 katana parry back might have been slightly too overpowered.
Starting with a spear / wakizashi would have been more accurate right?
