    At the 7:05 mark: To make the blocking easily the same you can pit a piece if painters tape on the right side of the chop saw framing and mark it with a sharpie. That way you don't have to measure every piece of blocking. Or clamp another piece of wood there as a jig stop.

    You need better protection for the joists than just tape. Tape will breakdown from UV exposure. I use an aluminum cap over a double sticky barrier tape. The aluminum cap will not degrade like the tape will when exposed to the weather and sun.

    Excellent video. Really appreciate all your content. I have a few basic questions and may be regionally dependent of climate or different code requirements.
    First question: Do floating decks need to be mechanically attached to the ground in some manner in the event of very high winds / hurricanes… Since you are using plastic footers that rely on gravity to stay in place on the ground vs a more traditional approach of concrete footings that the beams/joists are bolted/mechanically fastened to such that the deck is fastened to the ground?
    Second question: As you mentioned with composite decking, the life of the deck is much longer where you want to increase the longevity of the support / joists (e.g. you put tape over the top of each joist). Should the ends of the joists that were cut be treated with wood preserver to insure that the cut ends will be protected and sealed especially as they are mechanically connected to the rim joist with screws where you want to maintain the integrity of the end of all all the joists where they butt up into the rim joist? Or are the pressure treated 2x6s completely saturated with preservative throughout the entire 2x6 board where applying the wood preservative to the freshly cut joist ends is not necessary?
    I’ll apologize up front if this is a naive question but it seems other videos of building decks, they seem insistent of always treated any cut ends of the pressure treated lumber with applying preservative.
    Once again, really great and very useful content - Thank you!

    • @Buildtuff
      @Buildtuff 20 дней назад

      We can help with that (we're the creators of TuffBlock). Floating decks aren't typically required to be tied down by code and the weight of a typical deck like this is not too far off a small car. So the weight holds it firmly in place. But installing earth anchors into the soil is so fast and easy to do that it's always worthwhile. You can either get ones that auger into the soil with a simple power drill or use duckbill anchors that you hammer in. They'll provide uplift resistance and attach to the subframe so your deck is secure in case of high winds.
      And second, with any cut or exposed ends you'll always want to treat these with some sort of sealant. We prefer bitumen based sealants but any will generally do.

    Thank you so very much for the terrific and informative video. May I ask one question. Living in California with only having hot sun and limited rain as our weather to contend with. What is your guess of how long a deck like this could possibly last? Debating between a deck or pavers. Truly appreciate you. Thanks again.

    Instead of doing so many blocks, would it be possible to use 3 4x4s spanning over maybe 3 or 4 blocks and then the deck on top of that? Obviously the deck would sit about 5 inches higher, but if height didn’t matter, would that be possible? Especially in a yard that is not very level, the risers to the 4x4s could be cut to level

Pavers wouldn't work here because this area of the yard actually gets very wet and soft during the wetter months in Seattle so I went with something lifted off the ground would be best.

    If you're going through all the trouble of leveling the whole area why not just set it on concrete blocks? To me, the advantage of Tough blocks is using them on uneven terrain and leveling your deck/shed base by cutting appropriate lengths of 4 x 4.
