    Great review, Harry. BMW need to pluck whomever the lead was on this car and make him or her the top boss, particularly on the M cars. Just when I believed BMW was too far gone, they released the M5 CS. It’s hard to believe this is from the same marque that that makes the XM, iX, and some of the other abominations. This car is what BMW and M of old are supposed to be about: usable, daily performance, and unmatched dyanamics. Granted price is starkly different to the past. Big win for BMW, but we need more like it.

      @@fakevirus8828 that's not true at all. Just making things up. The E60 M5 had all kinds of problems. I will say BMW should be ashamed of the S85 and S65 engines. They were developed and manufactured from the start to only last so many miles. Even with regular maintenance, the engines won't last more than around 80k miles. Imo that isn't a well designed engine. Doesn't matter how exotic it is. A well engineered engine is designed to be high performing and long lasting. Idk how BMW can expect that to be ok.

Those engines thrive when daily driven and are two of the best engines ever made by BMW M (100% bespoke btw) or any premium manufacturer. The S65 is my favorite V8 of all time with its uncorked personality rivaling the big boy exotics any day of the week. Great review. About the Nurburgring lap time: it was a test conducted by Sport Auto magazine. Had it been set by a factory driver, like so many of the other times (for instance the P8’s time - which by the way is 7.23, not 7.18), the M5CS would typically be 5-10 sec faster than the now achieved time.

    Up to a couple of decades ago the M5 offered a usable and useful performance uplift over the "cooking" 5 series, but now its a superb engineered solution to a question few if any are asking anymore, because the high end 5 series now have all ther performance and more than you can use, whilst being more subtle to look at and easier to live with. Which probably explains why they built less than half the number they planned.

You did end up selling me on the P8 over the CS, by the way. Here in the US, the P8 was selling for basically the exact same price that the M5CS. Because all of the M5CS sold with a dealer markup. Anyone that pays that dealer markup or "market/price adjustment" is a Moron even for a car like this or anything. The dealers that do it should be punished by losing that car franchise too. Its one thing i like about BMW M cars and M-Lite cars, they are generally not overly loud. When driving hard sure they make some more noise, but when cruising around not beaning it the cars are generally pleasant sounding, but not annoyingly loud. I understand the drama of noise, but it would just irritate me over time if i had to live with it constantly. A mate of mine thought his number one car would be the Subaru WRX STI he bought back in late 90s, but he sold it within 12 months and got a BMW 330ci because the noise irritated him after a few months, because it was all the time.

    I’d take a B5 Saloon/estate all day long. So much more versatile - and unless you are a seriously talented driver wanting to go balls out on the public highway, the CS will be no quicker. Alpina’s are better 95% of the time. And SO much cheaper. Horses for courses.

    • @Duncangafney1
      @Duncangafney1 2 года назад

      Indeed, although even the Alpina is so fast, you can't enjoy wringing it out and that's part of my issue with all these modern performance cars, they are so fast, that 99% of people do not have the skill to ever exploit them and you cannot safely do so on the road, at which point, for fun at least, many older models are far better bets, especially if you do things like modernise the brakes. They have steering that talks (where electric systems don't), the chassis talks, they don't have loads of electronic nannies you need to switch off and the performance is more than enough to allow you to dispatch slower cars easily and safely.
      It's why I'll stick with my E46 coupe, even though it's the diesel, great chassis, good steering, good gearchange, looks beautiful compared to the modern ones and even sounds nice and not once, have I ever thought, you know what, I need more grunt.

    Thanks for another video Harry. A DCT doesn't have the refinement of the torque converter box, but it feels so much more sporty. However, the refinement suits the M5. My take on it is that they might have gone this route to accommodate both two and four wheel drive models with the same box. Perhaps ZF already had this in place where a DCT equivalent was not available or very expensive or had to be developed.

    Halfway throught it, I really want to love this M5 but IMO it's got a bit of an identity crisis, and some weird ideas of ''weight saving'' on a 1900kg+ car such as deleting of the arm rest storage...how much does that really save vs the inconvenience caused?
    IMO the greatest M5 was the E34 and E39. I love the engine of the E60, F10 was hugely capable...I just can't see this joining the list of greatest M5's. Love the seats though.
    For the extra cost of this CS package, you could buy a new M5, E34 M5 and E39 M5....kinda a no brainer for me.

      Well, IMO it's just for the show, a limited number to show off what they could do. I think not only does M5 have the identity crisis, but the entire BMW and M also have it too, and the CS models, just to save face for their not up to former glory products.

    I don't really agree with the seats BMW used for the M5 CS. Regardless of whether we're talking about an M5 CS or Comp, people use the M5 as an everyday super-saloon, not a track toy, and I think those seats will get old very quickly. Also, why seal front center console and delete it in the back? Again, this is not a Porsche RS...
