Very good review! I totally agree that the M5 CS makes the Blackwing look like a great value. But at the same time the Germans always charge stupid money for their special edition cars and people are willing to pay that money, so why wouldn't they keep on doing that.
This is also a question that is just as interesting when it is to be answered in another 10 years. 1. Which motor is going to outlast the other? Is the s63tu refined enough now to not have as many issues as when the original s63 was used in older 5xms with all of those problems? 2. Market value: which one is going to hold its value more? Looking at the old ctsv models, maybe the Cadillac? 3. Cult following: which one will continue to hold its status as the super saloon of its time? Looking back at the e39 m5 and original ctsv, it's tough to say.
@@estorilobd2 I'm sure that the Cadillac will be more reliable in the long run. And for the future values, it really depends where you live. I would bet that in the US the Blackwing will be more valuable in the future, but in Europe the M5 CS will be more desirable.
@@georgimihalkov4781 this is true but especially the big v8 manual sedans just dont exist anymore and are going to be gone in only like 2 years we hopefully have a little more time with the automatic v8s
I think when you ask this question you're forgetting that if you want a softer M5, you have the M5 and M5 comp. This car is for someone who is willing to compromise to get the absolute best M5.
The sad thing is if this car is the best and the Cadillac beats this car on many fronts then BMW is sadly just a bling dick size moniker. I have driven both cars in the Cadillac drives superior. And it is way quicker in roll racing which is what you normally do with a driver's car. Drag racing is the only thing the BMW does better and that's because it has all-wheel drive. The right things on the BMW in styling I like better but the Black Wing is undeniably the winner 🏆
@@Michael-ge3eo I meant the best M5. Props to Cadillac for making such a great drivers car, but I don't believe a lot of people would be cross shopping them unless all they care about is performance. The BMW styling and interior quality is still superior.
I own an M5 CS and have also owned different versions of it, like the F10 base and F10 Comp. It is a personal or a subjective opinion what you decide whether the M5CS is or isn’t worth the money. It is also your opinion that the Blackwing is better than this beast. For people who want to have lots of horsepower and sportiness in a sedan, get the M5 base (600 hp), if you like to do more spirited driving and want to stand out, get the Comp. (617 hp). For the best and truest M5 when you like to track your sports car and drive it home and still have a decent ride and a very unique and limited production car, then see if you’re lucky enough to get this rare beast. I agree that it is not for everybody (and not everybody is able to get one, trust me, they are scarce and way too pricey). If you’re a little bit overweight and big, it’s not for you; get the comp. If you want German reliability get an M5, you will also get a very nice fit and finish. The Blackwing is a great alternative for a fraction of the price, but you can expect rattle and crackling noises only after a few years of use. I’m just been realistic, and I am not condemning Cadillacs and or Corvettes since I have been also lucky enough to own several of those. Thanks for the good video and beautiful scenery.
I really don't think this will be cross-shopped with a Blackwing. It's not even a car about which actionable consumer advice can really be given. People that want it want nothing else. Like Matt said, this car is only being bought by hardcore BMW people who just want the best, newest BMW, no matter what it is. The normal M5 or ZCP M5 will be cross-shopped with the Blackwing (and RS7/E63 etc.) but not the CS. The price is mostly a result of the exclusivity, something valued most heavily by those die-hard BMW people.
even if warranted the question "who is this for" is ultimately irrelevant because according to bmw the entire m5 cs production timetable is completely sold out so they succeded in their ultimate goal of selling this and succeeded in making people believe m still can go all out with how this thing has been praised through the roof by every English outlet at the very least
So refreshing to hear you rubbish the seats. So many RUclipsrs rave about them but they just look high wear, uncomfortable and a lesson in how not to spec a road car to my eyes.
I remember being unpleasantly surprised with the nut divider as well, I wanted to love it so bad but deep down; I knew it was a compromise to the driving experience-I don’t own one, just test drove them (in an m4, not this chassis)
If it somehow made you not sweaty, like with a vent or something, it might be likable, but really it’s just a race car theater power wank which will castrate you in a front collision 💥
As a 2018 M5 (non comp) owner, I'm glad I didn't try opting for the CS. It always seemed like an odd mix of things with the crazy race seats, I had the chance to sit in them as well and boy were they terrible after about 10 seconds. I daily mine, and certainly wouldn't be able to deal with that especially for a hefty price premium. Something that is also worth note, and I've seen Matt and Zack talk about this before, is the huge potential that the F90 has. Mine is currently stage 2, haven't had a chance to get on a dyno however other stage 2 F90s are doing anywhere from 750-800hp at the wheels depending on how aggressive they want to tune. Adjustments to the alignment or even going with something like a Dinan coil over adds the steering feel that you want back into the car without making un daily-able, and the sound from the exhaust is excellent. Take all that together, and the difference is night and day from stock, I was practically falling asleep driving the car before modifying it, now it's a real dual purpose every day monster, just can't wait to get the snow tires off and get some PS4S's back on!
Great video!! The engine in this thing is absolutely incredible. There was a recent video from CarWow where the CS was keeping up with a Ferrari 812 Superfast. Of course, the 812 sounds 1000x better, but this thing is impressive nonetheless.
I saw that video and conversely was more impressed that the 812 reeled the M5 CS in so quickly and then just fade into the distance despite the gigantic torque advantage of the M5 CS.
@@TheGbizaille your right it’s not gigantic, but there is a huge difference in how that torque is delivered. Peak torque is 7000 rpm and peak hp 8500 so reeling it in is pretty impressive
Would love to try the CS, but it's price makes it irrelevant to me. I did try to buy a 2 year old F90 M5 (non comp) but to be honest I was left shocked by how dull it was, quick yes, but dead steering, characterless engine, just no excitement! Surprised myself by ending up with an F Pace SVR, technically worse, but so much more character and fun! for me anyway...

The M5CS is the last M5 internal combustion engine before hybridization and electrical version in 2024. It’s a collectors car if lucky enough to get allocation without the ridiculous minimum 50K plus markup. 1yr Run only and just very exclusive.. I had the opportunity to drive it and boy was it unbelievable in every imaginable way. The car felt much smaller like an M3 but a true dual personality with a push of a M1 or M2 button on the steering wheel. When cars go over 500Hp they need to be AWD as the power can’t be effectively put down with RWD regardless who is driving the car.. Power to weight ratio is what makes and breaks any sport cars, not just simple increase in horsepower numbers. Love the ideal of CTS V blackwing but living with stick daily driving is just another story making it a short drive weekend car and it too expensive for just a few hours on the weekend. M5CS was the EVO magazine car of the Year 2022 beating 911 GT3 and Lamborghini. Matt Watson from CARWOW rates the M5CS as the best M5 ever and drives it as his daily in the busy UK roads. This is the proof..
Matt, as a guy about your size, I totally understand what you mean about the seats. And it's not just about the size, it's about the way you are built. I'm a bit thinner than you, but my hips are open, meaning I walk duck-footed and my knees naturally want to splay open while seated. I heel and toe the same way you do. So when I sat in these buckets in an M3, at first I thought "cool" and then after 10 minutes I thought "pain". Even in the M3, these buckets are an option. Having said that, if this car had the base M5 seats as standard and these as an option....it probably would be worth the extra money over the CT5 (although I haven't driven one). And man, does that thing sound good from the outside!
When I was younger with a family, the 03 M5 E39 was always my dream car. Now at 61yrs young I am loving my 2021 M5 Competition- Donington Grey metallic w/ Tartufo interior.
The benefit of this car is at will hold its value due to its limited production run. I would just get a second hand comp and a stage 1 software remap take it 740bhp.
Matthew and Zachary, great job sharing your opinions on this awesome car and the Caddy. I wish I could say your professional advice helped me decide between the two. However, I am not currently in the market for a car that costs more than my 1st condo in L.A., sadly… I do dig the M2 CS a lot , the blue with the gold wheels is a cherry on top of the other worldly performance. Another awesome car but again, out of my range$$$. Perhaps, I could claw my way into a CT4 BW a couple years down the road on the pre owned market but for now here’s my quandary…I currently drive a Mustang GT PP1 with the infamous MT82. I was shopping a GT350 and then COVID and the Supply Chain disaster happened and the GT350 went from around $50k to $60 PLUS seemingly overnight so I settled with a normal GT with the clunky trans. It IS a thing, Matt Farrah, you were right. Everytime I shift into 1st gear from a standstill , no matter how careful I am, it clunks into 1st gear. No issues with any other gear change but going from N to 1st is nasty, each and every time. With gas out of control, I’m looking to ace the Stang unfortunately. When I bought it, gas was $2.30 in Charleston SC. Now it’s $4.85 for 93’ and no signs of it slowing down. I’m considering the Elantra N or Veloster N or the Golf GTI. If I can find an R with no ADM, I might spring for that but there are a lot of variables in play with my current ride which I’m upside down on as I’ve only had it 7 months. Which would you suggest, either N model from Hyundai or the GTI? 6 speed of course…I had a 19’ GTI in Candy White, the Rabbit edition. Fun little car but I became bored with the performance rather quickly. Took it to VW and they did an APR Tune which helped but created crazy wheel hop. I never thought I would consider a Hyundai but I loved your videos on them, including Zack’s time on the track following pro drivers. I love the sound of them for a 4 cylinder. Pretty special in that sense. The GTI is a nicer car on the inside and it has been bumped to 241 from 228 but I’m Hearing those numbers might be conservative? If so, that makes the GTI more appealing to me and they are super torquey which is nice. Any advice?
Shout out to Queen Sabine. RIP. As for the M5 CS, I think I'll stick with my M5 Comp for now and sacrifice some weight for lots of comfort and tech toys. But I'm sure my M5 Comp's previous owner will enjoy the M5 CS he traded my car in for.
Question for Matt and Zack: If you were going to choose as a daily but enjoyable family car and your choice is the M5 CS or Porsche Cayenne turbo GT, which would you choose and why? I have both on order at the moment and I also have the 992 turbo S.
LOVE Matt's critical view on the seats, I've sat in M4 comps, it's atrocious for me too and I'm used to 1LE Camaros. (6"2 200lbs) these seats also make it hard if you have to ever reach the other side of the car to grab sth (when parked)
Matt the Cs is not for every day driving. If you want an M5 for every day you have 2 "lower" versions.the normal and the comp..I believe ( and we will see it in the future) that the cs is a collectible m5 and for another purpose. Also I agree that bmw put those amazing seats and I don't believe that are so terrible as you said. Finally the balckwing can't beat the Cs in any territory in real world..do a head to head comparison to see for yourself..
BMW fanboys are the worst. The Blackwing is faster around VIR by a nearly a second. The Blackwing beat the M5 CS around Willow Springs by 3/4ths of a second. Appreciate greatness no matter who the manufacturer is. The Blackwing may not be the one you'd choose but, objectively, it is the superior vehicle in many ways. One could argue, the Bimmer has a better engine, brakes and auto transmission (debatable) but the Caddy has better steering feel, suspension (not even close) and chassis. Either way, the "balckwing[sp] can't beat the Cs in any territory in the real world.." is laughable and off-base.
I feel Matt is unnecessarily harsh on it. The CS is the sporty version of the sporty version of the 5 Series, of course it will be compromised in luxury at the trade off of performance. If you want a more luxury experience get the M550i
@@ThatRosco458 the seats alone are adding nothing to the performance. The carbon fiber roof, hood, and seats saved less than two hundred pounds total. You could put the Caddy seats in the M5 and you'd never feel any performance difference.
No there is no evidence of that. The ring time for the CS was not a factory time and had a lot of issues like the dislodged timing device in the glove compartment. The factory time would likely beat the Mercedes GT 4 door though we will likely never know.
The nut hump reminds me of superbikes for whatever reason with how the tanks are formed to be a little bit like that. Also, the noise is fantastic. What can I say, sounds BMW...a very good thing.
Such an aesthetically pleasing car...though not sure about the bucket seats, as awesome as they look. I'd be happy with a M5C - as you guys said, comfort is that one thing....
Great job as evaluation of the M5 CS! However, in this head to head with the Cadillac, you have to consider the depreciation... The M5 will raise and the Cad... will came down as more time value! The M5 CS is technicaly a masterpice as in exclusivity
Your "Trofeo" slip, clearly shows how your sub-conscious is deeply loving the Levante Trofeo you recently drove... Prove me wrong Matt! What color are going to choose? Interior? Delivery is a must in this channel!
As a lifetime BMW owner! I would buy the Black Wing. You guys are right this is a very uncomfortable car and I have tested the Black Wing. Incredible car. Engaging and even though it doesn't have the smoothest body lines I think it is better looking than the BMW
Excellent review, the only question is how EVO manage to give CS Best Car of the Year award? Based on your opinion (I trust more) it’s not car of the year . Thank you , always pleasure to watch!!!
The thing with the CS is (like with any other CS/CSL) its a collectors car, the normal M´s can do the same or better with light modifications, without losing much value, if you tune a (CS/CSL) you lose so much value, no collector wants a "modified" CS/CSL
Panamera Turbo S is 2.5 seconds a lap faster around VIR, has a much more comfortable interior and offers a better overall driving experience. BMW is like a kid in Forza who doesn't know what they are doing so they just keep cranking up boost and stiffening the suspension.
The Panamera Turbo S starts at $180k. For the money it had better be faster. Good news is that this CS doesn't have brutal suspension AND it has a drift mode. To each their own. Both are great cars. - ZK
ONE WORD regarding your comments on the dampers... MAGNETIC RIDE CONTROL!!!!!! No other active or passive system can match MRC. A LOT of MFG. are moving to them and for good reason. Porsche and BMW are the big hold outs. I just got out of an SS 1LE with MRC and into a 2022 GT4 and PASM has NOTHING on MRC.
if the main complain is the seats that a ton of people actually like, I think we got a good car here. Imagine if BMW would not have put their best most expensive seats on their "best" most expensive car? These are all sold out anyways so they knew people did not care about the seats. I am a bigger dude and sat on these seats and they are pretty comfortable to me, not a 10 hour trip comfortable but a few hours not a problem. But if I had a choice I would pick the CT5 all day because of the engine and manual (the cs is amazing though, best looking car bmw makes right now and probably the coolest but it is unfortunately a collectors car before it even leaves the show room which is sad imo)
I am curious how this stacks against an m3 x drive comp isn’t this only 150 some odd pounds heavier and not that much bigger? Obviously well over 60k more expensive. And 3 seconds faster at vir as noted
Come on, this car is intended to be a supercar which is slightly more practical, comfort is not its thing. You may not like that because you push this car in the luxury sedan segment, but it is not for that.
17:37 “It’s not as quick as the Blackwing in a straight line.” Did you watch the Hagerty head-to-head comparison? The M5 CS smoked the CT5-V Blackwing in the 1/4 mile thanks to the AWD launch. The Blackwing beat the M5 CS around the course.

The GTI is a nicer car on the inside and it has been bumped to 241 from 228 but I’m
Hearing those numbers might be conservative? If so, that makes the GTI more appealing to me and they are super torquey which is nice. Any advice?
Shout out to Queen Sabine. RIP. As for the M5 CS, I think I'll stick with my M5 Comp for now and sacrifice some weight for lots of comfort and tech toys. But I'm sure my M5 Comp's previous owner will enjoy the M5 CS he traded my car in for.
The CS destroys the Blackwing in a roll race as well. Seen it. Blackwing has more power on paper but CS is definitely underated.
No way not the ct5 Black Wing you're talking about the ct4
@@Michael-ge3eo definitely the CT5 pretty hard to mix them up in person.
Slower around a track.
@@RAZGR1Z true
Plus a CT5-V is twice as likely to veer into a hedge/curb/parked car, but that’s fine, someone can always out-drag you, but I’m all about feeling.
I just love this channel was watchin your podcasts but god you are rippin it
I love how quickly the transit connect at 7:54 is going, like it looks fast from the M5
You are one of my favorite guests on PKA. Instant sub 🙌🏼
RSK 💯
I love recognizing they canyons you test in
Great car. Great video. You guys certainly have chemistry. We're at the sunset, though. Keep up your good work.
Question for Matt and Zack:
If you were going to choose as a daily but enjoyable family car and your choice is the M5 CS or Porsche Cayenne turbo GT, which would you choose and why?
I have both on order at the moment and I also have the 992 turbo S.
Looking fit Matt. Ten points for Zak’s red beanie.
new title: " transit van walks 2022 bmw m5 cs ! INSANE - must watch "
I live the look of this car. Perfect amount of grille lol
LOVE Matt's critical view on the seats, I've sat in M4 comps, it's atrocious for me too and I'm used to 1LE Camaros. (6"2 200lbs) these seats also make it hard if you have to ever reach the other side of the car to grab sth (when parked)
When are you uploading the E36 GT video? Need it ASAP
The man giggles are real in this one.
DUDE that Transit Connect left you guys in the DUST!!
If you want a more luxury experience get the M550i
Those uncomfortable seats add nothing to its performance.
@@zonapainter They reduce weight, but I agree the nut cracker portion needs to go
@@ThatRosco458 the seats alone are adding nothing to the performance. The carbon fiber roof, hood, and seats saved less than two hundred pounds total. You could put the Caddy seats in the M5 and you'd never feel any performance difference.
Awesome video guys! What would be great if you can somehow get you're hands on the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 and compare.
7:18-7:20.....is what I always love to hear Farrah say during these!!🤣🤣🤣
Why does no one talk about the GT63s 4door?? it’s faster around the Nurburgring than the M5cs
No there is no evidence of that. The ring time for the CS was not a factory time and had a lot of issues like the dislodged timing device in the glove compartment. The factory time would likely beat the Mercedes GT 4 door though we will likely never know.
@@osmiumtank Yeah I guess it’s not a factory time
Please do m2 cs as well, thanks. Great review.
The Bmw M5 CS will be a classic icon as BMWs always do. The Blackwing is a great car now, but it has less potential to be a future classic.
Yeah but like all modern Cadi’s it’ll be a used car MONSTER. CTS-V’s are incredible value and pretty stout besides the interior
BMW don't have to be #1 in class
Cadillacs performance cars have to
Be good because they are domestic
EU cars will attract status buyers 😏
Soooo which is faster, this or the M8 Competition ?
The nut hump reminds me of superbikes for whatever reason with how the tanks are formed to be a little bit like that.
Also, the noise is fantastic. What can I say, sounds BMW...a very good thing.
Great honest review. Not just fluff. Excellent
Zack be like “HEY! Ya’ll got any more of them HP’s”
How does the E63s AMG compare?
Such an aesthetically pleasing car...though not sure about the bucket seats, as awesome as they look. I'd be happy with a M5C - as you guys said, comfort is that one thing....
918 buckets are the most comfortable buckets I’ve experienced by far.
Agreed.
@@redvivid 👍
Holy shit that thing is beautiful.I just love big heavy sedans, perfect car imo. That being said I wouldnt go for the cs just because of the seats.
Great job as evaluation of the M5 CS! However, in this head to head with the Cadillac, you have to consider the depreciation... The M5 will raise and the Cad... will came down as more time value! The M5 CS is technicaly a masterpice as in exclusivity
The difference in weight is the fault of the American version, in the European version the difference in relation to the Competition is bigger!
There are windy roads where i am at. I would prefer the BMW. The CS will retain more value in the long run. These cars aren't in the same class.
How’s does it compare against the Panamera Turbo? :)
Love you on pka
Is there no heat in the car?
Your "Trofeo" slip, clearly shows how your sub-conscious is deeply loving the Levante Trofeo you recently drove... Prove me wrong Matt! What color are going to choose? Interior? Delivery is a must in this channel!
As a lifetime BMW owner! I would buy the Black Wing. You guys are right this is a very uncomfortable car and I have tested the Black Wing. Incredible car. Engaging and even though it doesn't have the smoothest body lines I think it is better looking than the BMW
It's not designed to be comfortable it's designed to be fast. For people wanting more comfort then there is the m540i and the regular M5.
@@johnmitchell2269 I would pick the the M550i xDrive (520 hp) as a daily
I don't care how much faster the CS is, the blackwing is my go to
but I appreciate you guys making a video on this
Interesting opinion 🤔
What a dream car!
Wow, such a machine! Almost as fast as a 2017 Chevy Cruze RS 1.4T.
Is this a twin turbo V8?
I want a 2-door m5.
It's unfortunate there's no 2022 M6. The M8 roof is too low for me and the M4 is not my preferred beaver.
What about E63? you didn't mention it
Panamera Turbo S is 2.5 seconds a lap faster around VIR, has a much more comfortable interior and offers a better overall driving experience.
- ZK
@@TheSmokingTire Fair. I would put M5 CS money into a Sport Turismo GTS and sacrifice some inaccessible performance for a much better overall package.
Evo Car Magazine car of the year 2021: BMW M5 CS
it seems more like you dont know what you are saying
What tires are on the Turbo S?
Porsche on equal tire Compound
Will lose to the CS & Blackwing
ONE WORD regarding your comments on the dampers... MAGNETIC RIDE CONTROL!!!!!! No other active or passive system can match MRC. A LOT of MFG. are moving to them and for good reason. Porsche and BMW are the big hold outs.
I just got out of an SS 1LE with MRC and into a 2022 GT4 and PASM has NOTHING on MRC.
627 hp is a symbolyc thing. So much power the mclaren f1 had :)
if the main complain is the seats that a ton of people actually like, I think we got a good car here.
I'd go as far and call this M5 as the best family sedan in the Biz right now for the real world.
Actually never mind this is stiff af for a sedan
Alpina B5 for me, if I need to take a fast BMW
I am curious how this stacks against an m3 x drive comp isn’t this only 150 some odd pounds heavier and not that much bigger? Obviously well over 60k more expensive. And 3 seconds faster at vir as noted
What about benz e63 S AMG?
WOW what a giveaway. Can you guys keep doing things like that?
Would you consider this a 4 door 4 seater 911 gt3?
More like a 4 door turbo s. The GT3 is a very raw and engaging car which is the opposite of the 5 series.
Come on, this car is intended to be a supercar which is slightly more practical, comfort is not its thing. You may not like that because you push this car in the luxury sedan segment, but it is not for that.
Are those bucket seats in the rear?
Haha yea they are
Can you get another seat?
Matt is mobbing in this
I don't think the blackwing can touch this in on any performance level.
BMW needs to use Matt's quote from this video in the advertisement for this car. "Mobbity Mobbski"
You’re looking leaner Matt!
That Transit Connect was like Bunta. Could not catch up to it.
He probably meant from the roll.
Nice rolex matt
That Ford transit van was gapping you!
I love your bmw sedan 👍
